When I met my partner I told him I had lots of mental health issues ranging from depression cptsd bpd anxiety and ptsd and he annoyed me cause he said “change your food, change your mood!” But diet has played a huge role in my life changing and I’m so thankful to him. It changed my hormones and PMS symptoms too! I’m forever grateful and thankful to him ❤
When he said he didnt know he could be that happy person, it touched my heart to hear that in his voice. I was amazed at the difference when i tried a 48 hr fast said to improve your depression from healing your innards. It was so subtle then obvious. Now ive found eating sugar and pastry at a dinner party and my very low mood has just reappeared. So back to fasting and very low carb x
I remember hearing that saying when I was a kid and I couldn't get it AT ALL! I was like "I am who I am, what does food have to do with it?!" It's just how I was trained to think. Food is completely unimportant, we are superior to that voodoo (like growing food, cooking complicated foods) now in modern times. Women need to get out of the kitchen! I get it now. It's so obvious. Body and mind are connected and this is usually how we identify (body/mind) which is built on the food we are eating (and the food our mothers were eating).
I stopped drinking alcohol and started eating clean and my depression (major depressive disorder) and anxiety has almost 100% gone away!!!!!!!! I also exercise but I think the DIET is more impactful!!!!
I am recovering from amnesia after being struck by an automobile. My functioning is noticably impaired with sugar or grains. Also, my neurologist informed me that the brain works like a muscle. I have to exercise daily to help my brain heal.

We love fasting for upto five days. Done a seven days fast once. Didn't feel anything different from the five. Try to stay in keto as often as possible BUT here's the three ace's. Turns off the mainstream media, especially the TV. Surround yourself with like minded people. If possible have a fitness regime involving aerobic/anaerobic exercise everyday.

Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes, dr.sporesss. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.
Eating clean will literally change your life, also if you have anxiety and depression and your drinking anything more then a normal cup of coffee worth of caffeine a day, and not getting regular sleep then you might be doing yourself a lot of unnecessary harm.
As a registered mental health nurse 30 years I completely agree with you not only mental but also physical health is mostly driven by poor diet choices

I sat next to a psychologist during a soccer match a few years back. Our daughters were both starters on a top level DI soccer team (and so the parents were not slackers, at least he wasn't :). He was a pretty confident person and we talked about psychology and therapy a bit. I asked him if he thought diet had anything to do with mental health. He was taken aback. It was obviously something he had never even considered. His response, "Well, we talk and then they get better." That was it. I was shocked actually and I think he was offended that I would even suggest something other than therapy was important to mental health. I've often reflected on that conversation and wondered if he ever changed his tune. That was the last real conversation we had.
When I was in grad school studying all things psychology nutrition was never mentioned. Once I got into practice I began questioning it because of my own metabolic issues. Then I started research into the effects of nutrition and mental health. I found various cont ed courses that linked the two that really opened my eyes to the connection between diet and mental health. We are way past time for additional training for mental health providers in this area.
@@MsAllison You're into the realms of potentially limiting pharmaceutical companies pay day just like with supplements and herbal remedies. Eating lettuce with your evening meal can be just as effective as a sleeping pill, you'll feel better in the morning for it and I've never heard of a single lettuce addiction ever. No one's making much money from that.
It’s shocking to me that anyone needs convincing that what you put into your body affects your mind aswell as body. 😂 crazy that common sense doesn’t put two N two together
A simple discovery I made myself whenever I had nightmares, it was because of dehydration during the day. So a lack of fluids had a reaction on my REM sleep. It’s plain and simple.
I so believe in this. Not only physical but Mental health is all about mineral vitamin nutrition! Both my mothers older brothers, older by only few yrs died with Alzheimer’s. I helped my husband come off anti depressants. The Dr wasn't happy. The reason being, we couldn't get the help to deal with the past if he wasn't on antidepressants. Gut health and proper foods make a huge difference.
I have watched several podcasts with Dr CHris Palmer, and I ended up getting his book. He is spectacularly talented - and eating to serve your mitochondria for treating mental health problems makes so much accurate sense to me. One thing he didnt say in this podcast (of course I watched the lot) is that that cell mitrochondria also make serotonin. Now, if you know your stuff, serotonin is the mind stabiliser. Its what determines a good day, a calm mind, feeling well, with energy. Sugar and processed food affects this massively. Just like energy - mental health declines. As a low carber for 10 years I can say carb-coma is no longer a thing, and its not only physical, but mental wiht terrible concentration, and agitated mind. THat is your cell mitochondria downregulating serotonin production. Further, sugar and carbs are not essential for surival. But fat and protein are. hence low carb.
Could I ask: what do you consider low carb? I have eaten Keto and noticed a tremendous difference, but Im wondering if ita necessary to go that low in carbs.
@@suzanne2650not for everyone sure most can benefit it depends on the individual Dr Eric Westmans suggestion: if you are trying to reverse a disorder start with under 20 TOTAL carbs a day. This works for everyone he has seen in his clinic for the last 20 years. Do this until your problems disappear. Then you can start to slowly add carbs back into your diet. If symptoms return stop. Some like me will never be able to some can go as high as 100. Everyone has a different threshold.
I find i do best when i focus first on protein, then veggies, then carbs. When im eating a plate i go for what my body craves, protein, then what i need (veggies/fiber), then carbs (for pleasure) so hopefully when i get to the carbs im already pretty full and cannot eat that much.
I’ve done a healthy number of medical scans on young people who have “digestive issues”. I’ll ask them what they normally eat, and if there is anything that triggers the abdominal pain and it is ALWAYS processed food. One kids mother said he wouldn’t eat anything that didn’t have the word “pizza” in it (pizza rolls, pizza sticks, etc). Another young man stated that he predominantly ate pizza and drank beer. At one point in my college career I also had a diet of pizza and beer but when my body decided it had enough, I knew what it was telling me and I didn’t eat pizza for years afterwards. The problems went away almost immediately. Our food is our medicine. We are what we eat. It is absolutely imperative to be mindful about what we consume as nourishment if we want to operate at the highest capacity. The body is a vessel and will communicate what is working and what is detrimental to its functioning. This guy is right.
I took my overweight daughter to the doctors for testing. I remember the doctor telling me it was fine for her to eat pizza because it had all the food groups. Tomato sauce (veg) cheese ( dairy) dough ( carbs or starch pepperoni ( meat) ect… doctors get very very little education on diet deliberately because there is no money in cures and billions of dollars in disease. The American and Canadian food Guide needs an overhaul as it is known that the FDA is highly endorsed by producers and lobbyists. The food industry has been hijacked .
My depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia and chronic neck and shoulder pain was caused by having a mother with all the traits of narcissistic personality disorder. I do manage my symptoms with meds and trying to eat as healthy as possible. It sounds like you need to walk away from that situation, at least for a while so you can heal and catch your feet. I am not saying to completely cut someone off, but sometimes you need to walk away for your own health. If your house is flooding. Either, you are going to get to higher ground and deal with the flooding, or you are going to exit the house till the flood waters recede. I love my family, but I need to be at least several states away from them. When we do spend time together. The time is quality and cherished. When I lived near them. There was constant strife and problems. Just my two cents...

This is very eye-opening. I had long Covid the better part of May ‘22 - Oct ‘22. After numerous traditional dr visits (including the ER, urgent care, etc) and realizing they frighteningly couldn’t help I became my own Dr along with Dr Berg, FB groups, and a functional med dr. I didn’t even know what long Covid was until I found ppl who were experiencing the same debilitating symptoms. Mitochondria kept popping up along with the link to food and dormant viruses that Covid brought out. One thing that stood out was how much food affected my mental health. LHC gave me anxiety and depression since my nervous system was attacked. What I discovered was a low histamine and a non-inflammatory diet played a huge part in healing. I wasn’t a believer until I ate spinach which is a high histamine liberator so it triggered anxiety. Gluten triggers fatigue. I wish traditional medicine drs were brave enough to really look deeper into diet instead of prescribing pills that cause more issues.

It happened to me, too, although I was working out 5 times a week for about 90 min each time and was in a permanent calorie deficit all the time, and did not stop that after starting hormonal birth control. Turns out the hormonal changes caused lipedema in me. Besides that, I had horrible side effects from hormonal birth control like severe depression despite trying several products. The side effects stopped after going off of hormonal birth control, but the lipedema stayed (there is no cure for it yet). You may wanna get checked by a phlebologist or dermatologist who specializes in lipedema. 1 out of 10 women suffer from it, yet it is rarely known even among medical professionals.
Don’t be so snarky! It’s obvious, yes, but why isn’t everyone doing it by eating better foods to make their bodies run better!! We treat our cars better that we treat our bodies!! Most think they can eat sh@%y foods on a regular basis and then they are dumbfounded when they have aches and pains, are over weight, have poor health (which is happening younger and younger), and are sick in the hospital. Nobody wants to do the work to get healthy and just wants a quick fix with a pill! Yes, the point she is making is obvious but the majority of people never figure out the cause and effect and could use this simple analogy to hopefully think about what they put in their mouth!
I have found via research as I'm a qualified dream analyst. People who suffer from nightmares and hallucinations are, in fact, linked to microbe problems, be it outside threats or inside threats. Which leads to all sorts of problems. You are what you eat. Xx

THE GOAL OF THE "CONTROL DOMINATING MARKETS" IS TO "CONTROL" THE MIND INTO BELIEVE (BRAIN WASH) AND BODIES INTO A CYCLE OF DISEASES AND DEPENDENCIES, BUT NOT CURES. MANY FOOD INDUSTRIES HIRES DOCTORS AND SCIENTISTS THAT PRODUCES DRUG CHEMICALS AND FLAVORS THEY CALL IT FOOD TO MAKE PEOPLE CRAVE THEIR PRODUCTS (KIDS INCLUDED) AND MAKE YOU EVENTUALLY SICKER. THE BIGGEST LIE IS THAT THE "DOCTORS" KNOW AND PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS BETTER (BRAIN WASH AGAIN). THE POLITICIANS,FDA.CDC,PHARMACEUTICAL,MEDICAL INDUSTRY AND FOOD INDUSTRY ARE CLEARLY NOT IN YOUR SIDE! HOSPITALS AND CLINICS ARE THEIR CASTLE AND HOMES TO FEED YOU DRUGS AND CHEMICALS ,WHAT IS CONVENIENT TO THEM NOT YOU. THE PRODUCTS IN THE HOSPITAL ARE THERE FROM CORRUPTION AND LOBBY FROM THE DIRECTORS OF THE HOSPITALS.
We are what we eat, and the brain is not separate from the body. It is therefore obvious that our metabolic health and what we eat play major roles in both body and brain health.
When I'm going through an anxious time I definitely have to cut added sugars out. The better I eat ( whole foods only ) the better I feel mentally as well as physically. I also cut out caffeine and alcohol when I'm more anxious.
In America we have the Food and Drug Administration. I would take that quite literally. The ingredients on processed and packaged food today are medications and are designed to make you sick on purpose and give you all the metabolic issues. this sends you directly to the doctor where they don't even have to ask you what you eat, they already know because you're there. When you tell the doctor the symptoms they know what you're eating, it's by Design.

Ketosis increases the amount of mitochondria in the brain and makes them more efficient as well. It also increases blood flow in the brain and reduces inflammation
The biggest problem is the massive food additives in packaged foods in the US, in addition to all of the steroids in beef and dairy products. 45 years ago, as a teenager, I was seriously physically debilitated from food additives, as well as being in a deep suicidal depression until I was nearly 30 due to the steroid residue in dairy products (didn't eat meat). Simply going organic solved ALL of that!!! In addition, moving to Germany solved even more health problems as the foods here are not so full of additives and the tap water does not contain chlorine and floride. The huge statistics of suicide, borderline disorder and mass shootings in the US speaks for itself that the population are getting mentally ill from all the toxins in the foods which do NOT exist in Europe countries.
HOPEFULLY THEY DO NOT CHANGE THAT. OTHER COUNTRIES SHOULD DO THE SAME. THE WHOLE PLANET MUST KNOW ABOUT THE BASIC HEALTH THINGS THAT WE NEED AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE AVOIDED. THANKS FOR YOUR POST!
I have to agree. I ate vegan for over a decade and struggled with many physical and mental issues in addition to general unease. I'm not fully carnivore but I now eat mostly chicken and some fruit/veggies. The difference in my mental state and energy levels on the days that I don't eat this way is staggering. My body and brain are just different when I eat meat - sharper, more alert, no energy lags during the day, I need less sleep, sleep quality is better, aches and pains go away, and there are few to no negative feelings. Food does indeed matter but we've unfortunately been given very bad info on what the human body needs so even if you want to eat better, you're screwed if you go by mainstream knowledge and advice.
I pray Dr Palmer or one of the other doctors respond to this. Can I do keto while at the same time having low thyroid function. Most doctors say that the thyroid needs carbs to operate properly. Diet is huge... Also a huge income for many internet celebrities to make it the number one cause for many illnesses. I'm very aware that diet plays a big role in my well being but it's not the only puzzle in the equation. I'm just saying it's all the factors affecting us - don't think you'll be able to control your entire life through a diet.. that's when your diet becomes your god and religion. We so much wish we could control our own well being and were very afraid there's things in our lives we can't control but that's just the way things truthfully are. We are our genetics, environment, past, mental health, stress levels, fitness and so on. What I'm saying: don't make diet your god - it doesn't work that way.

Watching the Dr Palmer videos brought tears to my eyes. This man is a treasure. I bought his book and am starting it now. I look forward to the day when the general public is awakened to his teachings, as I was forced to learn this information after a five month bout of intense pain with a stone stuck in my bile duct. We need to be very conscious and aware of our health issues-including those we never heard of before we are afflicted with them. I send Dr Palmer my best wishes for his important work.
As the Ancient Greeks espoused ‘you are what you eat’ - nutrition from high quality foods as unprocessed as possible alleviates so many physical as well as psychological issues… a longitudinal study showed that significant adverse behaviours problems in some schools were allocated significantly when the typical USA school canteen profit motivated crap processed fast food diet was replaced with freshly prepared foods over time showed marked improvements. Obviously feeding the masses is expensive, however what are the trade offs benefits

I agree. Been keeping processed sugars to a minimum for years now. Would suggest dropping all sodas and sweets and desserts if nothing else. Many ultra processed foods have sugar to make them taste better. There are good alternatives for almost all processed options if you are ready to potentially pay a bit more.
what's going on at 2:07? I can't tell if there's an edit blooper here or if it was intentionally edited to have Dr. Palmer contradict himself. He's saying that he "... knows without certainty ...". ???
It's astounding that people don't realise the link between poor diet and mental health. How can diet not impact your mental health? The body is not separate from the brain, it is all connected. But of course, there's no money to be made in eating a healthy diet, well, not in comparison to taking numerous different drugs for all the health issues we have..
We would have to convince every member of his family because now it's too late... he does not have a mind of his own to do what needs to be done to make him better.
As a mental health professional, I don't know a single therapist that would say diet doesn't play a part in mental health, let alone call it "laughable".
Yes i hear you loud and clear, when we eat junk foods we get fat and we look ugly and we stat to worry and start to loose sleep bingo all the mental health broblems starts, very simple.
I found his comments to be typical of most western trained Doctors about what should he eat to help his brain. He doesn’t know because he wasn’t trained in diet or nutrition. Just because he fixed himself or so he says and we don’t know how much he is fixed we can’t just believe everyone on UA-cam is telling us the truth.
Highly processed foods with lots of chemicals are nasty. Stick to more basic foods. If you have to buy prepared food at the store- should be a simple list of ingredients.
“They think it’s laughable” because they think that people eat a variety of foods. But many likely don’t they may be eating fast food a lot of the time and that can quickly kill a person with weeks. Some people have a sensitivity to some foods that affect how they feel throughout the day. And for people who drink a lot and don’t eat properly that has a huge effect on depression. The body has to be balanced everybody knows that, so why they say “diet is laughable” means they haven’t tried a poor diet for a month. There was even a documentary made about it I think it was called Super Size Me.

'You are what you eat.' My mother brought me up with alot of old sayings. I find that now I am constantly being reminded of them.
Same
I remember hearing that saying when I was a kid and I couldn't get it AT ALL!

It's not primarily taught, like with nutrition and doctors.
I've been pretty taken aback when dealing with the close-mindedness and ignorance of a lot of lavishly-paid degreed professionals these days myself.
@@MsAllison You're into the realms of potentially limiting pharmaceutical companies pay day just like with supplements and herbal remedies.
So basically we should avoid sugar, carbs, and processed foods?
Could I ask: what do you consider low carb? I have eaten Keto and noticed a tremendous difference, but Im wondering if ita necessary to go that low in carbs.
@@suzanne2650 between 100grams to 20grams of carb is between keto and low carb
@@suzanne2650not for everyone sure most can benefit it depends on the individual
Dr Eric Westmans suggestion: if you are trying to reverse a disorder start with under 20 TOTAL carbs a day. This works for everyone he has seen in his clinic for the last 20 years. Do this until your problems disappear. Then you can start to slowly add carbs back into your diet. If symptoms return stop. Some like me will never be able to some can go as high as 100.
Everyone has a different threshold.
Well said!
I ate rice and beans and chicken. And ate bread with butter/cream cheese. And developed IBS.
My depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia and chronic neck and shoulder pain was caused by having a mother with all the traits of narcissistic personality disorder. I do manage my symptoms with meds and trying to eat as healthy as possible. I know that a healthy diet, plus some exercise does help me but it’s hard when I have to engage with my dysfunctional family.
Breathing exercise can help you in your neck and shoulder pain..just take a rest ..

WOW REALLY? 🤯

After being on carnivore, I feel real differences with my physical and mental health. It's not just a placebo effect.
I agree, diet is important. However, changing your diet means committing to heath. This has a huge effect on your mental health.

How can one find a verifiable financial planner? I would not mind looking up the professional that helped you. I will be retiring in two years and I might need some management on my much larger portfolio. Don't want to take any chances
@@Scarlett34568 Marisa Michelle Litwinsky is the licensed advisor I use. Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with to set up an appointment.
I looked up her name online and found her page. I emailed and made an appointment to talk with her. Thanks for the recommendation.
Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!
is your emu chubby too? 🙃
Thanks. Very helpful video.
What NO IT'S NOT... ITS GARBAGE... IT'S FULL OF LIES AND HALF TRUTHS AND USELESS GENERALIZATION!!!
This is a clip from a longer interview they want you to click on the link in the description. and I recommend you do. Basically what helped me and what he's talking about is a carnivore diet or 0 carb diet. at the doctor's office he might call it therapeutic carbohydrate reduction.
For the first 30 days eat nothing except beef butter bacon and eggs, and hang on to your hat. Not only will you be symptom-free but you will be overwhelmed with the presence of well-being and you'll never go back. His book is called "Brain Energy".😊
And consdtipstion
The MIND diet, recommended by nutritionists to prevent dementia, is nearly identical to the DASH and NASH diets (for diabetes, heart, liver). These are not low-carb, but are low in refined carbs like sugar and white flour.
Good info, but the title was misleading.
It got your attention? That was the plan ✌️
Changing how, what, and when I eat took me from decades of sevete depression to a clam life.
The joy of eating ice cream, tastes great, but some brands make me really depressed. And I’m not generally a depressed person. So yes, food absolutely affects the body and brain at every level.
Self-Discipline is the key... The earlier you learn it, the better your life will be.
I don't need no scientists to tell me,I don't need to watch no YT video,,,I can assure you 100%,from my own experience, after 30 yrs of depression and taking medication for it,,taking the sugar and processed foods out of my diet is what changed my life,, I'm 52 happier and healthier than I was when i was a kid..I don't take no more drugs,no medications, just a healthy diet and plenty of exercise,,i also find meditation and breathwork helpful, but the diet is the main part. But all have become habit for me,replacing my 30 yrs of medications and self medicating with addictive hard drugs. From hopeless addict, suicidal seeing no escape to happy and healthy as ever, looking good and loving life.Such a simple thing as changing ones diet, that was the first step and the key to open the door to a new life, and not one doctor, therapist or counsellor in 30 years ever suggested to change,or even asked me about my diet.
I did 2.5 months on strictly meat diet (carnivore). It heals anxiety etc. But when I start eating fermented milk products (cream, yogurt), the anxiety is back. So you need to be vigilant.

Sugar is the single WORST thing in our diet
🎯
Carbohydrates, not just sugar
@@Livetoeat171
Do research ; its processed carbs, bad fat and sugar
I agree.
Been keeping processed sugars to a minimum for years now.
Would suggest dropping all sodas and sweets and desserts if nothing else. Many ultra processed foods have sugar to make them taste better. There are good alternatives for almost all processed options if you are ready to potentially pay a bit more.
@@Chronon88 exactly,, waaaaay too much sugar in our diet
The only real answer given is a low carb diet. Wow. Just wow. A long time to say do.
I am 84 and on a vegetarian diet with less dairy and fried food. Not low carb but high fibre. Still mentally active. BP sugar etc optimal.
Diet, yes. But trauma goes even deeper to explain why we suffer mental illnesses.
"I strongly believe......it might".
Hard to confirm 100% if a concrete human study is unethical.
THIS! THANK YOU.
A better video on nutrition and mental health is the TED talk by psychologist Julia Rucklidge
I love these short podcasts. This information Steven Bartlett has shared with us and he still promotes Huel 🙈🤷🏻♂️
what's going on at 2:07? I can't tell if there's an edit blooper here or if it was intentionally edited to have Dr. Palmer contradict himself. He's saying that he "... knows without certainty ...". ???
This is all pretty obvious information; everyone knows ultra processed food wreaks havoc on our health.
Great 👍 information 🎉
It's astounding that people don't realise the link between poor diet and mental health. How can diet not impact your mental health? The body is not separate from the brain, it is all connected. But of course, there's no money to be made in eating a healthy diet, well, not in comparison to taking numerous different drugs for all the health issues we have..
Doctor Palmer, would you be able to help? Bruce Willis reverse his Type of dementia.???.
We would have to convince every member of his family because now it's too late... he does not have a mind of his own to do what needs to be done to make him better.
Dementia is preventable but unlikely to be reversed
As a mental health professional, I don't know a single therapist that would say diet doesn't play a part in mental health, let alone call it "laughable".
Then why do psychiatrists think drugs first?
Thank you
For WHAT!!!!?!!! THIS IS USELESS!?!!
Yes i hear you loud and clear, when we eat junk foods we get fat and we look ugly and we stat to worry and start to loose sleep bingo all the mental health broblems starts, very simple.
All tjis problems started when wheat was changed.
Another is vitamin d deficiencies
I found his comments to be typical of most western trained Doctors about what should he eat to help his brain. He doesn’t know because he wasn’t trained in diet or nutrition. Just because he fixed himself or so he says and we don’t know how much he is fixed we can’t just believe everyone on UA-cam is telling us the truth.
I watched my grandmothers dyind. Yes, nutrition/diet is playing a big part.
He sounds a little sad.
Steve! You made him cry! BAD STEVE; bad! ;)
