Love it, Sal! I think being or feeling old has little to do with chronological age but rather a certain state of mind. Sadly, it's one some inhabit as early as their teens, while others such as yourself (and me too!) will hopefully never experience it--even if we're lucky to hit 100!
This song is such a gem! Back in ‘90 when it came out, it just resonated perfectly-the driving beat & the lyrics of frustration. Still such an apt song to today, as are many of Karl’s songs. RIP Karl-I’m so glad to have seen you a couple times and will always enjoy your timeless music!
Oh my heart hurts. R I P Karl, safe journey to the other side. Blessings to your family as they navigate life without you. Thanks for your wonderful music.
RIP Karl. I just found out and shed a tear as you sound tracked some memorable moments in my life. There was an intelligence, harmony and truth to your art. I loved it. RIP my man I'm feeling emotional..
World party was so way ahead of the time. I’m 55 and see how this group would be huge now. Seems like in their songs had predicted the times now. Still awesome!!!❤️
Listening from Minneapolis. 30 years later. This song has it going on, still. Had to know I'm not alone with real life. Blessings upon Karl Wallinger and assorted musicians.
I had this on vinyl album in the eighties. I didn't know anyone who listened to world party but at the time I lived in the sticks. I could put my stereo speakers on the front porch when Dad was out of town and crankup World party and the PoGues for the cows, squirrels, birds, skunks, cats, coyotes ,,deer, frogs, geese, trees and fish to listen to. The animals were my nearest neighbors. 😎🐸🐕🐕🐴🐼🦌🐈🐀😊🐁🐮🐮🐮🐮👏👏🌲🌳🌲🌳☘️🍀🌲🌳🌻🌼🌻🌷🌕🐻🐶🐺🐹🐭🐰🦝🦡🦊🦡🦊🦡🦌🐸🦌🐸🦎🐇🐎🐄🐄🐄🐂🐐🐑🦇🦔🐿️🐿️🦉🦉🦅🦅🐦🐦🕊️🕊️🦢🦢🦢🦚🦚🦚🦃🦆🦆🐓🐔🐟🐟🐌🐌🐜🦂🐞🐞🦋🦋🐛🐛🐝🐝🐛🦠🐌📸📷🎹🥁🎻🎺🎺🎺🎸
Just read about the passing off Karl. Still remember where I first heard Ship Of Fools. Then went on to consume and love all World Party subsequent releases. Clever and thoughtful lyrics matched with ear worm music. Thanks for enriching my life with your superb music. Pure genius
Just listening to some of Karls songs and cant hold back the tears, his music was so evocative and inspirational. I remember first hearing put the message in a box all those years ago and feeling like I already knew the verses he had so cleverly crafted the chords melody and words to celebrate the influences he clearly loved and they were mine too, I felt connected to it and too him and I have to admit a felt a little jealous of his talent, he'd done what I had so wanted to do and a 1000 times better than I ever could have. RIP Karl ❤
Loved all the sweetness & the iconic songs now. RIP Karl Wallinger. Saw you in New Jersey with the violins decades ago. Indeed you were a gentleman too. ❤.
I have to say that a lot of the time it is just me making the racket! But a lot of tracks contain performances from quite a few musicians. It's a kind of floating feast! On this track there are performances from Chris Whitten on Drums (Waterboys, Julian Cope, Dire Straits, Paul McCartney) Jeff Trott on slide guitar (Wire Train, Sheryl Crow) .......I am sure all the details are on the artwork......yes I know there isn't really any artwork now apart from the cover shot......but that's another post!! All the best and thanks for your kind words....
Thanks for the reply, I truly appreciate it! I bought my mom your best of CD for xmas and have been jamming the tunes for months now. Next time you tour in Texas, I'll be there! Cheers!
Eric discovered them 6 or 7 years ago from this track and knew she's the one cover I like better by Robbie Williams but you have to give all come true and is it like today a listen dear God in heaven Karl is fucking brilliant, always loved the Brits he reminds me why
World Party were great. I have this single somewhere need to dig it out and play it. I think this has aged better than a lot of music from this era. Their music sounded so optimistic - you don't hear that so much these days.
I remember being 15 in California 2:34 and dropping off a dime bag to friend.. there up watching 120 minutes on MTV and this was playing , coolest song and video I ever got high too
Oh, the nostalgia hurts sooooo bad. I put this on several mix tapes back in the day because I loved it so much. I hear the intro and I’m back in another time and place.
IPhaedrus2 I'm seeing them on Friday (June 27th) at the Troubadour in West Hollywood! I am stoked! I used to play the entire Goodbye Jumbo CD constantly, back in the day! Way Down Now is my all-time favorite!
Mikey HotRod I was very early for their Troubadour gig, and first in line (doors didn't open until 8, and I had nowhere to go, so I waited out front, from about 6 or so). About a half hour after I got there, the band pulled up in a large bus, and got out in front of the main door. But instead of going inside, they walked down the sidewalk, and went right past me, and a few others who'd lined up. I figured they were heading out for a bite (or a pint, lol) before the show, as they didn't take the stage until 10 pm, and probably had time to kill, too! I didn't say anything or stop them, as they looked like they didn't want to be bothered. But now I wish I'd have at least said "hi", or "looking forward to the show" or something... :)
I’m a 30 years old man and just discovered this awesome band and this cool song Was watching an old video of Conan obrian where Conan and Andy were talking about a song and I just searched for it. I’m glad I did 😊
I've loved Karl's music since I heard this song and Message coming over the radio on Live 105, San Francisco, in the late 80s/early 90s, when I was just out of university. And I got to see him play live five times. His songs helped get my husband through cancer, especially Sunshine. I don't believe in deities or supernatural stuff, but I'll send my thanks to Karl out into the universe, for what it's worth.
OMG! I have recently rediscovered Karl Wallinger and World Party after not having heard them for about 30 years I think I was prompted by Reina del Cid and her video of "Ship of Fools". Obviously her video is not a version of the Karl Wallinger song, but it got me remembering and searching. Soooo glad I did.
Quite possibly the best Stones influenced song ever! (whether intentional or not). Original enough to be awesome, and familiar enough to pay tribute. Everybody's rocking, cool lyrics, but man, that bass line. Pumping! Thanks for the awesome music. And, yeah, agree with the comments about thumbs down. Thumbs down people just don't get music. This is timeless.
I just rediscovered this song and love it. Such a cheery back track that outweighs the gloomy lyrics and makes is bright and airy. RIP Karl and thank you.
Same here. Loved when WNEW-FM played this quite regularly in 1991. It made the 6th grade more tolerable and was the perfect antidote to "More Than Words", which my ears got bombarded with in those days.
Great tune! Wallinger had once said "Rocks Off", the kick-ass opening song on the Rolling Stones' 1972 masterpiece LP "Exile On Main St" was the overall inspiration for "Way Down Now". Indeed I can hear it. Also, the "woo-woo" ending is a wink to the Stones' 1968 classic "Sympathy For The Devil" - the opener from their "Beggars Banquet" LP.
I saw World Party last night in the ATL! Fantastic show!!! Go see them if you can!!! That's the hottest tambourine player I've ever seen Sounds like a young Lou Reed. one of the best songs i have ever heard.
oh wowwww i LOVE this song so much. it brings back such cool and happy memories of my early nineties life and i miss it so much 💔there's always been something about this song' s sound that i love. those were such better days it felt like the sun came out every day back then.
Thanks Karl for being such an inspiration to me. Goodbye Jumbo was the best album of the last quarter century. Truly inspired and brilliant music. Happy trails mate!
I remember hearing this song for the first time on the Chicago radio station WXRT. I was wearing my Walkman walking my mail route and.....man!! I was blown away!
This thing has Rolling Stones written all over it. Good track. Thank you World Party for being there in the 80's and for the memories Great song. Little bit of "Sympathy for the Devil" in there.
R.I.P Karl Wallinger. Thank you for the music.
Wow. That was this year. Awfully sad. What a talent
We lost Karl on March 10, 2024. His music lives on - what a talented musician. RIP Karl and thanks for the music and memories...
@@selflesswill As Yoko Ono said about John Lennon: "When he was alive, he was with me part of the time. Now, that he died, he is with me all of the time.".
Karl is the best!
RIP Karl. Rocked my world since I was 16 and I'm 54 now
One of the few musicians I can honestly say changed my life. RIP Karl, your music will stay alive within us all.
This song occupies a sad but special time in my heart. Thank you Karl.
I’ve had this song on repeat all afternoon!! ❤😢
So sad to hear of Karl's passing. Loved your work with both "W" bands. Be at peace, and thank you for all the music big and small
RIP, Karl. Loved your music.
Especially this song 😊
Godspeed Karl. Thank you for writing some of the coolest songs around.
I am 69 and when I play my guitar along with the band, I feel like I'm in my 20's again. I love this song and this band!
BOOYAAA!;)
Love it, Sal! I think being or feeling old has little to do with chronological age but rather a certain state of mind. Sadly, it's one some inhabit as early as their teens, while others such as yourself (and me too!) will hopefully never experience it--even if we're lucky to hit 100!
Your 20s must have rocked. How are your 70s gonna be?
65. On the 12 string right now.
nice
When Ship of Fools debuted, I blasted that song out my car over and over. Good musician. Sorry that he’s gone.
Thank you for everything. The music. The memories the music brings. The joy. You are missed.
First time this song hit my car stereo I had to pull over. Bought the album the next day. RIP, Karl, and thanks.
Me too!
I bought it too. This particular song did it for me. So sad to hear he passed. I cranked this .
Love you karl!
Oh my heart hurts. R I P Karl, safe journey to the other side. Blessings to your family as they navigate life without you. Thanks for your wonderful music.
💖🙏✌️
What a song; never fails to get me moving. Wish we had more Karl Wallingers in the world today.
Great song, one of my favorites! Still playing it in 2023 - timeless!!
SNAP. I just played 3 of their songs in a row, this being the 3rd. Ooo ooo.
Karl left us 2 days ago. RIP and thanks so much for your music. Still playing and enjoying it in 2024...
Always loved his music with World Party and The Waterboys, didn't expect how much his loss would affect me...rip Sir....
The album Goodbye Jumbo is a absolute gem. A must have album.
In my top 5
You obviously have great taste in music.
That album should be rerealeased, remastered and repackage ASAP❤!!
This album got me through a lot back in the 90s. As has most of World Party's music. Journey on, Karl. Thanks for the music and smiles. 💖✌️
Beautiful! Thank you Karl.
Any time I'm way down and now, this song helps me back up!!!!
I have loved this song for 34 years. ?? God damn I'm old
Thanks for the music. Your influence in music resonates.
RIP Karl. I just found out and shed a tear as you sound tracked some memorable moments in my life. There was an intelligence, harmony and truth to your art. I loved it. RIP my man I'm feeling emotional..
Loved Karls musical outlook on life. Ship of fools instantly resonated with me.
As a 17 year old I adore World Party, bus driver always played it. Goodbye Jumbo album is pure talent, when the rainbow comes is just the best.
World party was so way ahead of the time. I’m 55 and see how this group would be huge now. Seems like in their songs had predicted the times now. Still awesome!!!❤️
Thank you Karl. ❤
Thank you Karl for the beautiful music, you are missed but your gift lives on!
What a great song. Damn I wish Karl didn’t fall down and get an aneurysm😞. The good thing is that his great songs will never die

❤❤❤❤❤❤ I could have written this comment word for word and it would have been true.
Wallinger was a genius, he already was with the Waterboys and he was when performing solo, pure class
Never knew he was from the Waterboys. No wonder I like this song!
Agreed, completely. No wonder he and Mike Scott may have butted heads. Two musical geniuses.
He is still a genius, he isn’t dead.
😢
I really liked the vibe World Party brought when I discovered the songs on MTV. His music was lively in a laid-back way. “I’m way down now.” RIP
Loved all the sweetness & the iconic songs now. RIP Karl Wallinger. Saw you in New Jersey with the violins decades ago. Indeed you were a gentleman too. ❤.
I never get tired playing this song. It makes me happy. Karl Wallinger was part of the waterboys before he made his own band. Great song writer!
27 years old and just now found this band. I guess now is better than never. They've got some amazing songs!
Not "they". It's actually all one guy named Karl Wallinger. I hope you enjoy him as much as I have over the years! Lots of amazing stuff!

RIP "Captain" Karl. You were an inspiration to many of us!
Good taste in music brought me here ..

Goodbye Jumbo indeed. Thanks for the music Mr. Wallinger

Haven't heard or seen this since it was on 120 minutes. Should be an anthem for 2020. Sounds so good.
I would even dance to this one. Just brilliant songwriting.
Was feeling nostalgic... this was a big hit when I graduated from H.S . A Fun carefree time a young man !
Zootman2020, you are snap on. Hard to believe this song did not gain the attention it or the band is worthy of. Great song!
Something amazing about this song.. the melody, the era, the memories...

@Ron Koestlinger I honestly think Wallinger's voice is quite similar to Jagger's.
Whoo whoo⚡️whoo whoo👍🏻
Wow! I was 20 when this song blasted out of my radio. Sound just as great today!
Saw in 2000 or so at Moore in Seattle. 5 rows back and as stage left as possible. I am like that laundry being spattered about.
