This song has become my anthem. I have to balance it out with "Is It Like Today?". I sing Ship of Fools accapella spot on constantly. Absolutely...may The Lord Bless Karl's soul. When He gave us Karl He blessed us.
Yeah, I mean 1986 was far less troubled in every respect than the here and now. Me though, I'm thinking of The The's "Armageddon Days are Here Again" as being the song with lyrics more relevant today than 1989.
RIP. Evidently Wallinger had a brain aneurysm back in 2001. He survived it, though I guess he lost peripheral vision. It was a miracle he lived through it; many don't. Lived 23 years until the stroke that laid him to rest a couple weeks ago. All in all, a great artist who should've been bigger. One of the better 80s singles, right here.
Yes, most definately! Here's a gold star for your outstanding achievement, unwavering dedication to tasks bestowed upon you & doing your bit for, hopefully, the good of the world for generations to come 🌟👏👏👏
He was like all four Beatles rolled into one, combined with Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison and Prince, and that's just his musical talent. He also deserves massive recognition for his efforts in trying to wake us all up to the environmental and geo-political catastrophe we're sadly continuing to sail into. RIP Karl.
Rest in peace, Karl. Thank you for the music you have created for all of us. As a 90s kid, I discovered Ship Of Fools later on but have always loved Is It Like Today?
This was the last LP that I ever bought, back in 1987. My girlfriend at the time rolled her eyes when the needle came down on vinyl and made some kind of comment about the doom & gloom. As I remember, she was listening to Milli Vanilli about this time. It's amazing the sins that good sex will make you forgive...
Rest in Peace Karl. This song was absolute perfection, rarely attained in this world. If it was the only song you ever did, it would be a masterpiece nonetheless.
One of my all-time favorite songs! Timeless. It's poetry, it's magic, it's perfect. I was working at a record store in the late 1980s when I first discovered the band on a 2-cassette collection for charity (I think for world peace?). There were a lot of great artists represented (Eurythmics was one, IIRC), but this track, by this band, instantly blew me away and became the absolute standout. I played it in the store, I played it in the car, I played it everywhere until it became part of me. I felt it so much then, and I feel it so much now. Thank you, Karl, and thank you to everyone in the band, for creating a masterpiece and making a difference.
That was the Rainbow warriors double cassette!! The French intelligence agency had sunk the Greenpeace boat and this set was in memory/condemnation of that incident.
I remember seeing this on MTV back in like 86 or 87 I think... I was a teen born 1970 model... I knew the song and would sing the chorus through my life and now I feel what he means... We are on the ship of fools as of late...
Tis, true hell is 4 real. Had a vision. Big wake up call.! Itz, personal...btw, I work for the Lord Jesus now! See some 4 real wow, stuff in clouds..wonders, signs in my testimony videos. 2020 eyes 2 see!
I should have known these guys I'm 48, know a lot of bands but sooo glad I discovered these guys! Who's listening in 2024? I don't want to sail with this ship of fools either LOL
I'm still listening and loving it, still have the original vinyl from the 80s! A tragic too early demise of one of my generations musical Genius's!! The music after 35 years could have been written yesterday, can't find much to compare these days?!!......
YUP! World Party was prophetic for these times! Still love this song! Hard to imagine Karl has got to be around 70 years old too. Yikes! Where has time gone?
From your comments below, I just found out he moved on. It's 3:30 am on a Sunday night in Portland, Oregon. I am drinkinking rum. I am so sorry to hear this.... and then I thought, "Am I ?" We are just visiting. I am just drinking. What a beautiful loving sweet kind man he was. What a lyricist! He sure moved me years ago and still does. Be good, never give up, have fun and love as much as you can.... I will drinkink another toast to you Karl. I am still sailing on the ship of fools. That's a waaaaay toooo nice of a name for these cunts. God bless you all.
Fantastic amazing song. Thanks for inspiring a young musician - me - who tried to use this songs formula to write my own and i failed miserably.. and just realized how talented you were and how hard it would be to write a song this GOOD! Still bangs so hard in 2024 - thank you for your music Karl.
As a generation X participant growing up as a teenager in the 1980’s I loved this song. Am I the only one from that generation that is reminded of this song every time I hear The New Radicals song ‘You Get What You Give’ on the radio?
A brilliant song, totally catchy and beautifully delivered and is 'timeless', in that we experience exactly the same today. Time may have moved on since it's release, but this song, sentiment and reality remain the same...The 'Galley Slaves' will hopefully wake up and wise up against the way the world is being run or at least open their eyes a little wider and start asking some questions.
Best song ever. Really. So prophetic. Here we are in 2024 living this. This man knew 40 years ago. A genius. Thank you, Karl Wallinger. Love and respect you forever. ❤️
Rest in peace, Karl. Thank you for all of the great songs--especially this one!
I just found out and came here right away.
RIP. I won this album from a radio station contest in Gainesville, Florida in 1987.
Such a devastating loss. So glad I got to see WP a time or two.
Man, I am so bummed. I listen to World Party almost every week. You will be missed.
Seriously!!!!????? Man my child is littered with singers passing away! Bummer did not know! RIP Karl RIP.
Sounds more relevant right now here in 2024 than ever. RIP Karl!! ❤
1986, it was relevant then and its relevant now.
It will always be relevant in the system we've been under for at least 200 years. And, anyway, people have always been stupid
Came here to say that.❤ DT & KH debate on ….”..right now… “….
It sure does.
Commenting in the US in Nov. of 2024, Karl would certainly agree and foresee! I need this song to capture my mode.
This is, quite simply, one of the greatest songs ever written. Rest well, Karl.
This guy is woke and that’s a good thing.
I may have to agree there, def. is one of them, there' are many but this rates highly. Lyrics, melody, composition, deep to me.
@nickdryad nothing good about being woke u rainbow cuck
It is. for sure. Love it, since the day it came out.
Truly.
Who is still totally in love with World Party in 2020?
Me
My favorite band of all time!
I love world party...
Always! I've seen them in concert 5 times.
Add me to the list!
For the past 40 years , The Waterboys and World Party have been a massive part of my music listening life. This one hurts.
Oh Waterboys and World Party great bands...sigh now another gone...sucks. RIP Karl.
Rest in peace Karl. You may be gone but your music will live on forever
No longer sailing with us fools💔
This song is chillingly prescient. We have reached the point Karl was describing decades ago. He is in a better place now. God bless him.
ALL RELIGIONS are a great toxic poison on this earth.
This song has become my anthem. I have to balance it out with "Is It Like Today?". I sing Ship of Fools accapella spot on constantly. Absolutely...may The Lord Bless Karl's soul. When He gave us Karl He blessed us.

The problem is half of the population thinks they're the smart/correct ones and the other half are the dumb/incorrect ones.
so U think 😂
Heard this back in the day and was hooked on World Party from the opening seconds. RIP Karl and thank you for the music … 🌎🙏
Same same 💔😢
@@tessthef1rst Same here...
And me ;-)
100 years from now, this song will sound like it was written yesterday. It's timeless. An absolutely brilliant song.
The ship will go down long, long before that...
Exactly!!!
One of the best transitions into a chorus EVER
Totally agree. The pre-chorus to chorus transition is a materclass in songwriting, and gives me chills every time.
I concur
💯

This is good stuff. I slipped it into the kids playing list because I'm a good parent.

In my opinion the best song ever written. RIP ✌🎶
may Karl's memory be a blessing to all. this song has always been one of my favorites.
Wow never heard of him before, I've found this magical music and this guy died today. RIP Karl xxx
Still a brilliant song in 2022, and still avarice and greed running and ruining the world,
This was the last LP that I ever bought, back in 1987. My girlfriend at the time rolled her eyes when the needle came down on vinyl and made some kind of comment about the doom & gloom. As I remember, she was listening to Milli Vanilli about this time. It's amazing the sins that good sex will make you forgive...
That's friggin' hilarious. You just summed up the 80's!
Ain't it just, fella, ain't it just.
yeah, ok
Exactly!!! LOL,
Milli Vanilli about this time. It's amazing the sins that good sex will make you forgive. that might be the best line to set up what we lived threw
RIP Karl Thank you so much for the magnificent songs. I still can't believe it!!
Rest in Peace Karl. This song was absolute perfection, rarely attained in this world. If it was the only song you ever did, it would be a masterpiece nonetheless.
His predication for tomorrow.. was bang on!!! RIP Karl
Rest easy Karl. Been a massive fan since the eighties. Will miss your amazing light 😢😢

Prophecy as rock n roll. It gets no better than this.
