After 17 Years, the OG Looter Shooter is BACK with a Sequel!

- Hellgate: London was a charming attempt at bringing the loot-based gameplay of Diablo into a shooter format. While it was a buggy mess, it was still a fun game nonetheless. After 17 years, we have confirmation that a sequel is in development by the original dev no less!

I am speechless. In my entire life I was sad about 2 games failing: Hellgate London and Wildstar.
I can't believe that Hellgate London is coming back.
I LOVE this SO much!!!
I hope Wildstar is next!
Wildstar is on a private server. I didnt play it, only on the official.
Rip wildstar 😢
@@Vulkan_Gaming that would be awesome
youre so right! 100% agreed. i also hope wildstar comes back T_T it would be too good to be true
I love this game. I would love to see this IP come back. The world was amazing. Great lore!
Hellgate: London is an S-tier concept trapped in a B-tier game.
I liked the game, but it has A LOT of problems, hopefully they can make it right this time :)
Tried some mods to improve the game? Still would not make it an S tier tho ;-)
Hellgate 2038 would be the best mod for that (even if you want to play singlepalyer)
@@igorthelight
Hellgate 2038 is still in open Beta AFAIK. And according to the last dev Diary, Closed Station is still not done.
@@BeatmasterAC True. But so many people are recommending it xD
There is also a Revival mod ;-)
@@igorthelight
I played revival a lot. Too bad the Steam Version isn't compatible with Revival, nor with 2038
Well said bro, the concept was good. I still miss it, variety of classes, story, loot, difficulty were all there
As somebody who played Hellgate: London when it released, still has the original CDROM with activation key and guidebook that came with it, And still plays Hellgate: London OG version (not Tokyo), My excitement cannot be understated.
i'm with you brother
got the collectors edition sitting on a shelf, and currently re-installing the steam version
I still have the Hellgate box somewhere in all my boxes :)
*Overstated
I remember getting my dad to buy that game for me at GameStop. One of my earlier gaming memories lol I think I was like 8 or 9 at the time.
Nothing's ever scratched the Hellgate itch. It's single handedly motivating me to get a CD drive.
Remnant: From the Ashes (1 and 2)
This is the best news in months, if not years. The atmosphere of Hellgate: London and game itself is one of my most loved in 35 years of gaming. Thank you for sharing this news!
I am 35. Insane.
nice pitch cranker pfp 🐐
The chances for this game to have a good gameplay, looter shooter mechanics etc. and not to have shitty MTX are probably like 5-10%. I would love for this game to be a hit like Helldivers 2 but realistically it wont happen.
Keep expectations low but standards high and wait for release for final verdict... Hopefully they will release a demo otherwise, sail the 7 seas and save your money.
remember when they announced a sequel for Vampires: The Masquerade: Bloodlines complete with a trailer that showed excellent first person combat only to announce a few years later that the dev team sucked so hard they moved it to a different studio? I'd put money on that game being a mobile release.
"I would love for this game to be a hit like Helldivers 2," yes, I would also like every game to be a once-in-a-generation live service bonanza that drops into the zeitgeist with the high impact of a 380mm orbital cannon. Woudn't that be nice. But even if the game is very, very good it won't ever be that.
I’m glad I actually enjoy things and have a positive mindset lol
@@jasonmendoza2044 there is a difference between having a positive mindset and being naive.
@@poposterous236 I wouldnt call Helldivers a once in a generation live service. We have had plenty of good ones at the start only for them to be marred over time. Helldivers still has alot of time to prove that trend right.
YEEEEEEEEEES. I LOVED this game as a kid. I so hope it's going to be good.
Loved Hellgate London, had a ton of fun with this game. What really sucked they had a fantastic sci-fi book series based on the game that they never finished because the game didn't do well. Love the lore/story as well. So much there to work with.
this is insane never expect it...
I am so unbelievably hyped for this
Still remember playing this game in PC LAN cybercafe back in highschool.
Anyone remember the old gaming magazine ads for Hellgate London when it was coming out? They were like a picture of some beat up person and a quote of them like "The demons kicked me in my teeth and ripped my dog in half. I'm going to London". I thought those ads were strange and then you'd go to the back of the magazine for a little comic of HSU & Chan?
Yup i had 1 of those magazines, it was a strip of ppl saying'im going to london' in front of a burning london in the background. It was ligit hype at the time. Every game media was covering it. The graphics looked great at the time. I got it, played it, loved it for a few hrs then never touched it again cause i was studying for my degree at the time. Tryied the free2play version and hated it after a few minutes. However, will definitely look forward to playing HGR when/if it comes out. 🔥I'll definitely be going to London.🔥🙌
Yup I had one
Omg love hellgate you just made my day, thanks!❤
It's Bill Roper, who screwed up three MMOs that he worked on.
Bill Roper sucks. Never forget
Hellgate London was OG legit! Nice to see this! 😈😈
Wow I had no idea a sequel was coming. Will keep my excitement in check because without David Brevik I’m not sure they can get it right.
Bought hellgate london back in the day it was a hidden gem, also played the og guild wars kinda reminds me of that game
The only problem that I had with hellgate london was the absurd amount of bullet sponges in the game.
And if you're lucky (or unlucky in this case) you might end up finding an elite that's literally impossible to kill.
as someone who read all 3 books and played hellgate london for over 1500 hours back in the day, i can say that this is the most exciting news i've heard in video game world in years! (and im a huge destiny2 player who just heard about prismatic...)
Thank you so much for telling us this. I loved this game and still have my OG disc, although my pc doesn't have a disc drive lol.
I have never forgotten this game, I loved this game and missed it so much. I am so looking forward to this.
FOR THE LIVING!!!! awesome news man! this made my day thank you!
...I still have a copy of the original game that comes with me with every PC move.
Loved the aesthetic. Pre-ordered the game and...god it was a mess. But I still replay it every couple years. This is phenomenal news!
Wow! I can't believe it? It's coming back. Flippin amazing.
I struggled to play the original. It was sooo buggy and back then I had a mediocre machine so glitchy game on top of a mid machine didn't bode a good experience but it was a rad game.
The studio was heavily pushed to comeplete the game at predetermined date but since this genre was the first time being made they were essentially learing as they were going along so I never had anamosity to the developers. The frustration and slight anger was towards the higher ups wanting this game out NOW!. Alas it didn't go so well like many games we have seen many years later.
No freaking way!!! I was so obsessed with this IP I bought and read all the novels and little comics. I wish it would’ve done better back then. They left everything unfinished in the books.
I say this for many years, hellgate london has so much potential, I wonder how there is no hellgate london 2 so far. This is an incredible game and if it's made right it can easily be the best and most played looter shooter game on the market. Basically a diablo 2 game that's played from first/third perspective, it's just awesome.
One of my favorite game! Back in 2007 i even bought the original CD even played on official servers and 3 months after that they shut down the servers. Pretty good story.
I just remember the trailers going super hard with rammstein moscow
I hope this game does well. I played Hellgate: London with my brother back in the day and we loved it.
" Woe to the Dark, for knowledge is Light and Light shines still. "
was just playing hellgate the other night but got mad because the steam version is apparently missing content, so i bought a disk off ebay to play there multiplayer mod 2038
I remember seeing the trailer for this as a kid. Never got to experience the game personally, but I always wanted to play it!
Super nice news! :D
As a massive fan of Hellgate: London this excites me. I look forward to the future dev updates.
I’d love to see an updated game. I had a lot of fun in it back in the day.
I read the books as well as played the game. It was the last game that truly hooked my dad before he passed away. The IP means a lot to me and it having a chance to make a return is exciting. The Templars are one of the coolest factions I've read about in the realm of fiction.
Dude, I started watching you on your Wolcen videos 5 years ago. I'm so glad you worked your way up to 105k subs!
Keep up the good work, don't stop!
This is awesome! I loved Hellgate: London. Can’t wait for this to be out =)
A break from playing Hellgate: NYC coming up?
I can only hope with lots of caution.
Nightdive did a wonderful job with System Shock.
I couldn't finish the original because the cyberspace sections sucked.
They fixed the cyberspace sections now, so I can finish the game when I come back.
If they do a good job, I'll be there with my money.
Not all of it though.
Also, I hope that the female characters don't make the demons look sexy.
Maybe we can get the version of Hellgate: London we deserve?
Maybe?
OMG. I was so disappointed when the game servers took my online characters and stash to the grave. I installed it again when i got myself a new pc in ~ 2009 after my OG laptop died, finding that the final update to the game was nowhere to be found and i couldn't play the game I came to know again because id only found an earlier update which didnt have (the better) upgradeable gear and better upgrade costs and quality of life.
If it werent for diablo i would never have played hellgate, and if it werent for hellgate, id probably not play borderlands 2 all the way up until this year. And all 3 were iconic in my eyes. They did things in such a unique way from one another but all scratched that same itch. Id also confidently say that hellgate was the hardest of them all too.
I still have the attempted game files i tried to update to this day on my hard drive.
Awesome news! Looking forward to it!
Played the demo, played a cracked copy, played after buying the game, played the f2p game. Loved having a lot of little elementals and a demon running around killing shit for me. Interested to see how this continuation of the IP goes.
I'm so hyped for this, I loved Hellgate London!
I'm very interested. I thought BL was the OG, and I never knew this game. It looks sick, looking forward to see what they produce
I used to own the original cd version.
I always liked the premise our world but with fantastical themes.
I wish more instead of the typical fantasy setting used our own world for rpgs/arpgs
Just subbed. This is going to be awesome. Thanks for covering it and can't wait to see your next videos.
I cracked out on this game hard and even paid the sub for a few months. If it had kept development I prob would never have dropped it so glad to see a resurrection.
I just started Hellgate a few days ago. I really like the game, so its very nice to hear that news.
No way we're getting back to it, was so excited for it back when it landed and really liked the experience. Hope for their success and for the new product to be good.
Dont judge a game by its cover, this game has a freaking cool cover.
I had so much fun in OG Hellgate as an Engineer.
They went all out on the lore. They had a book trilogy and manga series. I loved the setting.
never played the game but how it look i could see myself play it :D
I really hope this is true. I absolutely LOVED this game.
Great game, I still play it every few years. I'd certainly give a sequel a try.
WOW, awesome news! I remember watching the cinematic as a kid and being totally blown away
I've had Hellgate London as my PC background for the last few years. Awesome to see this.
That is fucking awesome I played the hell out of this lol when I was a kid
Super excited for this, cant wait to see the new vision for the game.
i cant wait for them to announce that they are going to be considering modern audiences.
thx for the heads up!
This is a franchise I always wanted as a TV show or a series of movies.
I remember buying this just two weeks before the servers were gone. Managed to rush through the main game with a friend even though we were both busy with work.
It had amazing potential but was taken out of the oven too soon. Yet, it was some of the most fun online co-op.
Remember the dead.
I loved this game so much even though it had problems 😊
Man i played the hell out of hellgate.
omg!!! hellgate after all these years...yes yes yes
One of my favorite games of that decade. Hidden gem, in all its rough and unpolished glory.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for news about this.
I liked to Play as Engineer and Summoner. Both of them we're super fun for me Back in The old days. Having this experience Back would make Happy tbh.
Played the same classes. Loved the game and sad to see how it ended up. I pray they do this right but from what I remember Bill Roper kind of fucked things up the first time. That scares me.
@@novalith3778 Yes, i think Bill Roper was one major reason. A lot of bugs, to less peaple want to play on the testserver. I can remember, that the officials often wrote in the discussion board and i think also in the chat to go to the testserver.
i *LOVED* the mess that was Hellgate: London. ....and hated the mess it turned into. While this is very exciting (VERY EXCITING) -- it's also kind of worrying....but, still....VERY EXCITING lol
"Normal people have a single watch. Insecure people have 2. I...have 6. I AM THE TIME MASTER!!"
I will NEVER forget those characters and their wonky quests XD
I started in 2007 with HGL until the final minute of the servers... played Revival SP Mod (which is great)... then HGG (which was barely playable but scratched the itch)... and now HGL 2038 which is fantastic. To Bill Roper I say... take my money! Again!!! 🤓
Actually some really cool history :) never heard of it before this video but sounds super cool!
Hellgate London's pretty much undead, it's never really gone. I played (and enjoyed) the original release when it came out, was glad when it at least came back years ago, but I didn't play that given the Korean monetization model for the game. There has been a lot of reporting over the years (well more in the years immediately following Hellgate London shutting down) about the possible and many, many reinventions of Hellgate. But most of that was originating from whoever it was - I forget now, HanbitSoft? - managing the game post-Flagship, and their numerous and vague press releases. So, I hope Roper's new company can pull this off, but they screwed up a LOT of things years back and their company (Flagship) was a mess. So, this is good news I guess, but not holding my breath. Thanks for covering this. :)
1:46 Haha, no no.. On November 3, 2008, South Korean-based software distributor Hanbitsoft announced via its global public relations blog, that it has acquired the Hellgate: London and Mythos properties from Flagship Studios. The post mentions development of an upcoming expansion, using leftover Flagship development efforts. That was the Tokyo expansion, which unfortunately was also littered with bugs.
The Hellgate London 2018 Steam release was a scam and had bugs Hanbitsoft never bothered nor intended to fix.
Still, i'm excited for this new game.
Holy s...I would've never thought this day would come..
The IP always had massive potential..
Please, don't f this up.
Edit: I still have the original DVD of this game...Played it every couple of years..I still find the game enjoyable.
I'd love to see this make a comeback provided one thing. Keep it faithful to the original. Make the game the original was supposed to be. Show us the vision that had everyone hyped back in the day and most importantly.......DO NOT LET CURRENT YEAR BS IN THE GAME!!!!! No politics, no diversity quotas, none of the bs that has infested games in the last 10 years. Give us the game you tried to make back then. Show us the vision you were seeking. Let us bask in the glory of what we remember as one of the best era's in gaming. If you're just gonna modern day it, with predatory monetization and current year politics, then in the words of Starset, "let it die".
wait, HELLGATE LONDON WAS A LOOTER SHOOTER? I kept hearing about it but i always thought it was something single player campaign, maybe gears/singularity type of game
Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THE LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION 😂
Rest in peace to the OG Helldivers straight outta London 🙏
Hellgate London was a great concept that was executed poorly. The Armors were cool....The weapon were cool....The combat ok.....The music, what music?.....The story ok. There you have it. Wish they remade it and fixed those ok elements and gave us a banger.
I'd love hellgate london to come back. It set the stage for Borderlands and the like. It needs to be done justice and the UE5 is a fine platform, it's just what kind of game will we get? MMO, MMORPG, FPS or 3rd person? To many variables but if done right I think this can compete with the gap we currently have with the Diablo 4 and POE 2. One was a let down the other is Still waiting to drop. Hellgate London could hold us over or stand out and rock our socks off, They had plenty of material and Stories were abundant if polished right.
I really enjoyed the dark but zany world of HG:L The biggest problem I had with the game was that it felt "stiff". It was like taking an isometric game like Diablo 2 or any of the Warcrafts and cludging the camera into first and third person. Then again, this is likely 17 years of better made games colouring my memeories talking.
We have seen new games come out from smaller studios that have an amazing polish and set of loops simply because the engines and tools for game development have evolved to such a high degree that it makes game development arguably easier and cheaper. Especially with "off-the shelf" engines like U5 likely making development a much more efficient process then the "Upgraded" Mythos engine from 1990.
Depending on the features of the game it could be relatively simple for the team to make the game good. Now the tricky part comes when you add in multiplayer as that can open up all sorts of doors, for good and ill.
Nothing wrong with a purely single-player game if it's made good. If nothing else multiplayer can be enabled a bit later when most of the big game-breaking bugs that are not network related are squared away.
Personally the closed down MMO that lives rent-free in my heart is Tabula Rasa. I was there at launch and I was there at Swan Song when the counter hit Zero. I fought in the Valverde Marshes, I fought in the Torden Mires. I loved to just watch the lightnight strikes at the Torden Fields and fight for the Outposts wherever I could. I found a DVD in my game box called "Tabula Rasa Snapshot". I think I just backed up the main folder and all that. Funny.
FUUUUUUCK YEEEES I loved hellgate london and the tatu ramstien duo song they did was AWESOME!!!!
While the launch version was EXTREAMLY GOOD! With "bugs" really was super endgame mega lucky loot drops that absolutelly raped enemies and was equal to find a full perfect set item or unique, runed item etc.
Then they did a patch that locked game progression to online active reactions. You needed some crap ingame to item progression that could only be aquired with some online thing and effectivelly killed the game on the spot and the fixed bugs removed all the cool shit those bugs made avaiable to you.
So sadlly the developer DID not make a good game, he simply lucked in some elements and thats it. So while im hyped for a good looking lootfest (played lots a borderlands 3), i serously doubt the dev will know what hellgate needs to hit that lucky launch version again.
My best guess would be, a sectioned but samy tiled random map, with breakables in random places. Poe style mob packs with heavy empasis on aoe abilities and active skills to survive getting mobed, with AI generated pictures for the random loots to feel it is a lot, while it is actually all dogshit without any tangible mechanic that could serve as a center piece for a build. (like the original launch version of hellgate, a specific gun with all the bits and bobs would in itself created a build). Prolly there will be a few uniques tided to campaign missions and thats it.
I'm sorry, How they killed the original game. I have no faith in them.
On a related note, I really wish they'd release a solo/private multiplayer version of The Secret World. As in, the original version, not Secret World Legends. Loved TSW, but it really needed to not be an MMO; story and RPG depth was good enough to be a singleplayer title easily.
Always felt like TSW was a bit of a spiritual successor to Hellgate London, especially if you played Templar.
Setting of this game sold me hard enough, I managed to overlook it's faults - if they REALLY can replicate it, but with better gameplay - Ohh, boyyy, that's some excellent news!
Loved this game so much, it was Diablo cross Quake, and both of those games were among my favourite games ever. With a pinch of Legacy of Kain. I was so sad that Bill Roper (one of the developers, actually, wasn't he the lead behind all this? If I recall this was Bills' child) got almost done dirty with this game. The studio simply needed more time and cash to make it work, but even after its launch it was no "Blizzard" tag around to have flocks coming in to support such a great game and eventually it died. Hanbit was the nail in the coffin.
Meanwhile blind Blizz fans would purchase anything Blizz would do for years, with zero inovation, and support them making them filthy rich, but most didn't even know who some of the OG developers even were. Blizzard North worked on WoW too and other projects, and the core Blizzard team was so in need of them they had called them back for D2 even though there was already ruffling in the feathers internally and we could see where it was going. Plainly put, after Blizz North broke away from Blizzard completely I don't think the company ever made anything interesting. WoW was a pile of dung, D3 was garbage, Overwatch was an "arena" childs play Paladins Rippoff, Heroes of the Storm a childs DOTA ripoff, SC2 was practically a decade old tech game that felt like it was out of its age, and the list goes on. Youd think they learn from all this then they launch D4 which was garbage yet again....
Long story short, I always felt the og devs were done dirty in terms of their success in gaming, and HG:L was a game changer for its time. It needed more support to actualize what it was aiming to become. As mentioned in the video, the OG looter shooter. That was Bill Roper, always innovating for the time. It wasn't till almost a decade or half a decade later when the genre actually became popular with Warframe.
I am very skeptical because history has replayed this story. And every franchise I loved ended up one way or another dying out, but I am so crossing my fingers hoping they pull through with development. I would love to see a new Hellgate.
Amazing news. Can't wait for future details.
edit: as you said "we hope they learned from their mistakes"... their only mistake was that they were not popular. That is all. Aside from that nothing of their approach and development was a mistake. You telling me WoW launched clean? It had bugs in it that were not fixed until at least 6 months later and more. But fans put up with it because they circle jerked around Blizzard. Hellgate simply needed more support. That is all. Their only mistake was doing the same thing they always done, but not taking into account that now they no longer have that fanbase out the gate supporting them. Even the money the spent on the cinematics, I mean they went all out. They really could have dropped some of that to compensate for a more steady game because now there was less forgiving being handed out.
Can people imagine if this was launched under the Blizzard name what would of happened? Yeah, it would of been the most popular looter shooter franchise today.
0:15 "basically a bunch of devs"?!
Those people were the founding fathers of Blizzard North. Without Brevik there would be NO Diablo and don't get me even started about the accomplishments of the others.
God damn it... when will you people learn to look beyond "the brand"
For all of its MANY bugs and glitches, HGL was one of the greatest lost loves of my gaming life along with Marvel Heroes which is also related via the David Brevik/Bill Roper connection. I spent thousands and thousands of hours (and dollars) playing both and would jump at the chance to play either again. Outrageously exciting news.
This is a criminally underutilized and forgotten IP. I truly enjoyed playing this game, despite the bugs, and the gameplay loop was fantastic.
If they stick to the original format -- Diablo 2 set in a near-future FPS -- they could really have a winner on their hands.
Remember: this game launched an entire GENRE despite failing itself. It's clear that the concept is sold, and anyone who played it the first time around knows the lore was spectacular and gnarly. Here's to hoping!
So weird. I was just thinking of this game the other day. I was super hyped for this game when it first came out and I enjoyed it for a while.
But honestly the gameplay didn't live up to the promotional cinematics(which was awesome).
Hope the new game will be a lot better, because the game had such a cool esthetic. Badass knights in power armor. FUCK YES!
Hellgate: London was such a good game. Not sure why there was all that hate at the time, aside from maybe bug/glitch issues, but I loved it. So this is indeed good news. Let's hope they learned from their mistakes - lord knows they've had a long enough to do so - and that the finished product is polished without too many issues. I reckon they have the fan-base to make it a huge success. If it's buy-to-play then I'm there, but any cash-shop insta-win nonsense or overrpriced subscription model (coughBlizzardcough) would be a massive turn-off. Time will tell, but exciting news nonetheless.
Something about Hellgate had me wanting for so long that I've been obsessing over it for the past year. I even bought one of the statues and the collector's edition PC Box and then out of nowhere I get wind of a sequel in the works?!?!!? Absolutely phenomenal, just praying to GOD that they can pull this off, as I know there is a lot of people (myself included) who are going to be a little skeptical. Fingers crossed.
Not a perfect game, but i be damn if i say i was not have fun.
The setting. The art direction. The gameplay. It just so unique like nothing before it.
HL is the true pioneer of the FPS A-RPG. It just that Borderland perfected it.
Wait What???????? Oh hell yes i would love a sequel to Hellgate Londen, hopefully this time my PC can handle the graphics :-) It would be very very sad if they put micro transaction crap in it, really hope not.
Wait... You're telling me the books "hellgate" correlate with a game??? I HAD NO CLUE
Can't echo the feels hard enough. This game was sooo much fun. I did instantly think of that purple debuff (can't remember what it was from...chaos damage or something) being pretty much weirdly akin to Vulnerable in Diablo 4 lol.
I cant believe this is true. I played this game online till the servers shut down. I played it in Japan, it was pure horror with japanese letters, omg. I played it.... i dont know the name. And i play 2038, and its the best version of the game since im playing it. In this hole discussion about Diablo 4, last epoch an Poe2 i thought, wtf Hellgate London is on the same lvl. Abilities on the Items is not new!! For the last 2 weeks ive been playing darktide. Sorry, but HGL is much better. If there is any chance to play this in unreal engine 5 and without falling through the floor. Yes, i would never need another game.
I was so pumped for Hellgate back in the day and then...Borderlands came along and Hellgate stumbled and I never got my hands on it. Apparently the version on Steam is whack so I held off. Heres to hoping Redemption is an actual modern game with the intelligence of a good old game. Developers NEED to stop chasing shit trends and just make a good fun game without the bullshit ruining the experience.
One of my favorite games that was also one of my biggest disappointments. I really wanted this game to succeed. A "polished" sequel would be amazing! I just can't get my hopes up considering the devs track record.
