Glad to hear of this game again. It's been a while since I played it, but I remember some good times with it. One memory in particular was when it ended up getting streamed by JoCat and ended up filling a server with players.
I really do appreciate that the developers were putting work in to the latest update, there's times I'm hosting a server hoping to see more people give this game a try.
Long time, no see lads. AFF is a game everybody should play at least one just for the experience of boarding a ship and blowing it up from the inside, it's a great spectacle. With a good first experience to onboard you into AFF you can get another hundred hours out of it before the deeper flaws start to burn you out. My advice for this: Short match timers and long re-spawn times, it breaks up the loop of spawning and getting farmed, makes stalemates easier to break when defenders can't return to their posts as quickly after being picked off (successful flanks achieve more), it cuts short a bad experience when a stalemate can't be broken, and it lets you experience more map and environment variety in one play session (AFF's space map selection is a bowl full of eye-candy and you're missing out if you stick to ground maps). You want your interactions with AFF to be short and sweet to keep the game fresh.
Please keep PUSHING for this game, I want to see a new surge in the community, more sales and - hopefully - faster updates to polish the core gameplay.
I see where you come from and where you are going with this. But Planetside isn't even close to the scope of Angels Fall First. It has the playerbase tho 😅
I remember playing this when the servers were full. It was fun but very hard to figure out if what you were doing was contributing to the team objective. Excited to see how the tutorials pull this together. I got a chance to play this on one of the early Alpha builds.
Thanks. I'd forgotten about this. Played it ages ago on Steam. Was pretty fun. Like you say, it has so much to offer. Shame it hasn't got big. Just downloading it now to give it another try!
There was an old game called Mars Wars, where we had 2 robot factions fighting in a huge continental map, pretty much like planetside 2, it was beautiful. Angel Fall First reminded me of this. Hopefully one day, this game get the love it deserves.
I'm so glad you're giving these guys some spotlight, had this for years and unfortunately only ever really been able to play with bots, but it's just such a superb concept.
I like how he keeps referring to the game's peak when the "servers were full" in the video. I've had this game for a lonnnnnnng time and I don't remember there ever being full servers lol but yea the devs have always been focused on the bots thankfully
i remember downloading this on moddb years and years ago and trying to get anything more than 15fps, brings back memories of unreal engine 3 and cryengine mods. glad to see it still going, though it's been a while...
It’s giving a feeling similar to star wars battlefront elite squadron. That game allowed you to start on the ground fighting in fps, capture a control point that had cannons to take out the enemy team’s ship’s shields. You could then fly up to space and fight in your ship, but then also board their ship and blow up the ship’s reactor, and then fly back down to the planet and finish the fight there if you wanted.
Man, it's amazing to see how far this game has come! I played it back when it was just a mod, so to see it come this far is extremely impressive! I'm gonna need to get back into it later on!
Me and a group of friends played this to death when it first came out. In 2015 it was the best scify shooter imo and mechanically and map design wise still punches so incredibly above it's weight. I think what did it in was the devs being simply to honourable. Back when early access was not as established, they refused to advertise the game AT ALL until it was finished. Ironically, that meant not enough money coming in to continue development. But sadly it also meant that so many people who would have enjoyed this absolute piece of love never got to experience it. I sure hope the devs finally get the recognition they deserved all along.
Played this game at its peak player count and i still play it on a weekly basis. After all these years its still my favorite shooter to this day. The game at its peak was insane, the roleplay screaming when breaching an enemy ship was hilarious and adrenaline pumping. Forming squadrons to bomb enemy ships or gunt down fighters was fun too. It makes me sad when i play the game and I see that I'm the only one online most of the time. The discord and other groups do set up game times and orivate servers occasionally and its worth experiencing a full server every once and awhile The ground combat is fun, but man i love space combat and breaching enemy ships and having massive battles in the interior while other players are on the outside defending/attacking the ship the rest of the server is fighting in..... I hope one day we will get an unreal engine 5 upgrade, the game would truly be unbeatable in its genre then, but the devs work jobs outside of the games development so it most likely won't happen.... This lonely player can dream though
Nice to see you covering this. I've had it for awhile and played it mostly offline with bots. Well worth the price of admission even offline (did I mention you can actually command the bots on your team around the map?) I'm definitely going to jump back into this soon to see if any players are online.
This has been on my radar for half a decade, happy to see an update on it. Hopefully removing that early access label helps people on the edge take the plunge.
I remember a Battlefield mod that nailed this concept years ago (can't remember if it was BF2 or BF2142 mod) called "First Strike", based in Star Wars universe (original and clone wars era) with nearly every vehicle and unit imaginable, it rocked! Sadly it suffered from lack of players and I think it was killed off by Gamespy's shutdown :(
it actually started as a HW2 mod! :) and even back then the quality of the assets was waaaay beyond everything anyone else was doing (or has done since, honestly)
This game deserves so much more. I've been following it for nearly a decade and it's insane that the devs haven't given up no matter how many issues they've had. It needs a playerbase.
I liked the concept and the devs even had the time to reply to some of my questions. I love that you can do space combat if thats your thing. Only thing is the flight machanics felt really strange compared to any other space combat game where it just feels so strange.
I obsessively played this back in 2008 to 2010 (I don't remember the exact year) when it was still an Unreal Tournament 3 mod, and even then, the player base was tiny. If I joined a server it would usually be 2 or 3 other humans, and one of them was a dev. The standalone version had few to no players either, though in 2015 I did get a group of friends to play it with me and we had a fun little 2v3 space battle. Overall, it's a great game - I've always wanted an FPS that has space battles that lets you fly starfighters and board capital ships. But most of the time, I just played it with bots with few other humans. It really deserves to be more popular than it is! I'm trying to make something similar with my Pavlov VR mod, Sigma Fury.
I still play this game maybe an hour a day. Even single player it's just so bad ass, especially in space battles. AND they still update the game. It's 100% worth checking out.
Great video! In the first few moments I thought you were shooting UT's Flak Cannon, so the style seems familiar to the Unreal Engine games from the 00's!
I LOVE AFF! I've been playing it off and on for years. It's always been what I wanted from the Planetside franchise for years. Sadly, it used to be an acquired taste due to the *heavily* oldschool Unreal vibe it had, and bots vacillating between derping out and being super AI assassin droids. I'm hype to hear it's leaving early access! Reinstalling now to see what's new in the update. Thanks for the heads up!
I bought this game years ago and liked what I saw, even if it was a bit unpolished at the time its good to see that the devs were actually passionate about the game and have been working on it for so long
I would love to see this game florish. There's a LOT of unreal mechanics from the tournament series. It's basically Planetside 2 on Unreal Engine at a much grander scale via depth. What I don't understand is why people choose not to look past the low player pop, and dated graphics/ui. Esthetics should NOT be the priority. Gameplay should always take that spot. Play the game, keep it active, and help promote it. Only then will we see it flourish. There is absolutely 0 publicity. Get it on sale, play it every few days to keep the count up, give our small teams with big ideas some love.
This is such a great game, just never had more than 4 people playing at once when I was on, but it’s what Dust514 always wanted to be, or what SWBF3 wanted to be. This and guns of Icarus deserved a much bigger player base
I started playing this 6 years ago and there were quite a few players. I loved it and I've been playing it off and on since then. Somewhere along the way they changed something with the space flight and it didn't feel as good. Maybe they just nerfed the bombers which is what I usually fly. I'll have to test it out in a fighter next time. I have a lot of fun playing against just the competent ai now. It's really cool how you can stand in a ship and look out the windows at the ships battling outside. Get in a transport, fly over to the enemy capital ship and board it as infantry.
I have had this game for a long time, I see they finally put out the update we all been waiting for. Will have to jump back in. I feel like the lack of game engine/graphics updates will hold this game back.
I own this game and its honestly amazing for its price. The experience is amazing even when playing solo against bots and its one of the most fun shooters i ever got to play. It does need more game modes though and a strong playerbase and a modding community could definitely turn it into a fantastic large battle simulator
holy shit I haven't heard about Angels Fall First in years. I love this game and have spent a fair amount of playtime with friends. between Planetside and an old Kongregate game with similar arena-tactic class-styles; this makes me excited to see it finally getting released.
I've been following and participated on this since it was just a mod for homeworld 2 and unreal. It was amazing then and it remains an amazing idea and well developed game. If it could be updated for new gen gaming it would draw a massive crowd.
I've played this game for years! It's an amazing game! It really does deserve more recognition, its soooo much better than 90% of AAA titles being released by large studios!
I really hope when 1.0 launches they go straight into making the sequel and find a good marketing angle for it. The aged graphics in this one is gonna make it a hard sell for the masses, but a sequel with a modern engine and their experience from this game could be as big as Helldivers 2!
When it was a mod for Unreal, it was the closest feeling thing I've ever played to Battlefront 2 (the original), and once it become it's own game, it was like they stepped that feeling up to 11.
The second I saw the first second of this video I knew it was Angels Fall First, me and my friends love this game, especially the all ship mission gamemodes where we just all board the enemy frigate and blow up a giant ship from the inside at a crisp 27 fps
Its one of thouse games that I dearly hope even if it wont get deserved attention, it will pave the way for other new titles to improve upon its great concept.

I really do appreciate that the developers were putting work in to the latest update, there's times I'm hosting a server hoping to see more people give this game a try.
like Planetside 2 ?? Did people just forgot that game ?
yeah first thing i thought of, suprised levelcap didnt mention it, its the best comparison
Yes, sadly. I'd love to see a proper sequel made by a proper studio.
Yeah its strange how much he forgets planetside exists especially since he played it for a good while.
Shit I think PlanetSide 2 forgot PlanetSide 2 ... If this can avoid having that monetization scheme, then it should be pretty solid lol...
Forreal lol
Looks a lot like Planetside2
Was literally thinking that as I started the video😂
It's a similar combined arms concept but it honestly has a lot of inspiration from Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield 2142 as well.
Eh, it's more reasonable and manageable than PS2.
Please keep PUSHING for this game, I want to see a new surge in the community, more sales and - hopefully - faster updates to polish the core gameplay.
*ahem* planetside
I see where you come from and where you are going with this. But Planetside isn't even close to the scope of Angels Fall First. It has the playerbase tho 😅
I remember playing this when the servers were full. It was fun but very hard to figure out if what you were doing was contributing to the team objective. Excited to see how the tutorials pull this together. I got a chance to play this on one of the early Alpha builds.
*cough Planetside 2 *cough
Literally what I thought
I hope more big UA-camrs and streamers start looking at this one. It's honestly really cool and almost nobody knew about it
Looks like an xbox 360 game.
saw the vid in thumbnail and thought, 'Angels Fall First'?
And, yup.
Wild project worth experiencing.
Video starts with: WHAT IF THERE WAS AN INSANELY AMBITIOUS DEV TEAM SAYING WE GONNA TRY TO IMPOSSIBLE
--Star Citizen: STILL in alpha
This is basically theaters of war we should have got in star citizen.
Planetside wishes to be this, and to this day they still cry when its brought up lol
The discord and other groups do set up game times and orivate servers occasionally and its worth experiencing a full server every once and awhile
The ground combat is fun, but man i love space combat and breaching enemy ships and having massive battles in the interior while other players are on the outside defending/attacking the ship the rest of the server is fighting in.....
I hope one day we will get an unreal engine 5 upgrade, the game would truly be unbeatable in its genre then, but the devs work jobs outside of the games development so it most likely won't happen.... This lonely player can dream though
AFF has been a hidden gem for years. thanks for showing this to more people because this is a lovely game and it has always brought a smile to my face
So happy to get more eyes on this. It's always more fun to play with others.
Nice to see you covering this. I've had it for awhile and played it mostly offline with bots. Well worth the price of admission even offline (did I mention you can actually command the bots on your team around the map?) I'm definitely going to jump back into this soon to see if any players are online.
Angels Fall First is one of those games I've played off and on for several months now. Very fun game, definitely deserves more attention.
and even back then the quality of the assets was waaaay beyond everything anyone else was doing (or has done since, honestly)
A cult classic from Stranj and the AFF team. I (still) love it!
This game deserves so much more. I've been following it for nearly a decade and it's insane that the devs haven't given up no matter how many issues they've had. It needs a playerbase.
BEEN PLAYING THIS FOR A YEAR. Its so slept on. I really enjoy the old unreal look
I picked this up early in its Early Access and it's a profoundly underappreciated game. The Battlefront successor we never got
This game needs a playerbase and I would play
I remember thebluedrake doing a video on this years and years ago. When they port this to Unreal Engine 5 i'll give it a look.
Titan Mode from BF 2142, that was a blast from the past. That was a classic game.
Too bad EA refuses to acknowledge it's existence and success.
I got this game ages ago, but didn't really play it. Didn't know it was still being worked on. Definitely going to take another look at it.
Love piloting a USNV Hugins Class Battleship blasting AISN Cricket class shuttles before they "sting" me.
Great video! In the first few moments I thought you were shooting UT's Flak Cannon, so the style seems familiar to the Unreal Engine games from the 00's!
I'm getting titanfall vibes from this in terms of aesthetics
Holy shit, I have this game since 2015, but never played it because my old PC never could run it. Guess it's finally time to try it out.
Thank you for making this video, we need more players
oh shit, this like the first time a youtubers been like "you've never heard of THIS game" and i actually haven't. nicely done!
I bought this game years ago and liked what I saw, even if it was a bit unpolished at the time
its good to see that the devs were actually passionate about the game and have been working on it for so long
I would love to see this game florish.
Angels Fall First rocks. Wasn't expecting to see a video about it on my front page lol
I could tell immediately when I saw the gameplay. I actually had forgotten about it. It's an amazing game, totally recommend it!
I have had this game for a long time, I see they finally put out the update we all been waiting for. Will have to jump back in. I feel like the lack of game engine/graphics updates will hold this game back.
I'm looking forward to checking out the update. I thought it was abandoned. It has fun combat. Though I found space combat to be a little tricky.
I remember getting this game when it first came out but I returned it after just a bit. Crazy to see how far it's come.
I own this game and its honestly amazing for its price.
The experience is amazing even when playing solo against bots and its one of the most fun shooters i ever got to play.
It does need more game modes though and a strong playerbase and a modding community could definitely turn it into a fantastic large battle simulator
It looks like Halo meets Tribes meets Killzone 3. Thanks for bringing attention to this very cool game!
holy shit I haven't heard about Angels Fall First in years.
Already had it on my wishlist, but that's one of 1600 games on there so thank you for reminding me of it lmao
Definitely picking it up soon
The second I saw the first second of this video I knew it was Angels Fall First, me and my friends love this game, especially the all ship mission gamemodes where we just all board the enemy frigate and blow up a giant ship from the inside at a crisp 27 fps
Its one of thouse games that I dearly hope even if it wont get deserved attention, it will pave the way for other new titles to improve upon its great concept.
Imagine what planetside 3 could be, like seriously
