It's like a glimpse into an alternate reality every time I watch these ocean dub clips of the later sagas. I got the Funimation dub halfway through Frieza while everyone else continued with the Ocean group dub.
This is essentially a throwback to my youth, we got this dub from it's first episode (Goku's Special Technique) all the way to the end. Other than the first few times the Fusion saga aired for some reason.

The Ocean Dub after Namek had some wonky music and really bad sound effects, but Drummond's Vegeta remained awesome. Sometimes I wonder what it would've been like if he was in the Funimation dub with the Faulconer score. Don't get me wrong, I love Sabat's Vegeta, but Drummond's Vegeta will always hold a place in my heart.
Honestly, how can ANYONE prefer the Funimation dub over this? The Ocean dub is just superior in every way. Scott McNeil is a boss in every role he's in, Brain Drummond's yells give me chills and he wipes the FLOOR with Chris Sabat. It's just unbelievable. Even Krillin and the kids sound better.
I respect both Vegeta's voice actors. However I do agree that Drummonds screams are better. Sabat's low normal speaking voices sounds more fitting. Honestly I feel Drummonds voice fits perfectly in Saiyan and Namek Saga. And then after Frieza saga everyone's balls dropped and then we get Funimation as we know. For Nostalgic purposes, I am just too use to Funimation.
I honestly wonder how anyone in the Netherlands understood what was going on. I didn't notice at the time, but the subs legitimately reduce all lines to short statements. It removes a lot of context and tension from what's actually going on. Didn't help that we went Ocean-Funi-Ocean-Funi all the time, either.

They did. The announcer and the voice overs were there for the majority of every saga except the frieza saga. Ocean came back in the beginning of the android saga. Albeit, a different studio and direction rushed like crazy. It was okay but there were just a lot of badly rushed scenes. It didn't seem to matter since this was just for Canadian and UK audiences. They even reused music from Mega Man and Monster Rancher TV series.
Drummond must be a chain smoker IRL because he cannot sustain a scream for long. He's ok in Cell & Buu seasons, but nowhere near his performance in the Saban dub.
It's probably because of the time constraints and budgeting here, they weren't able to put as much work into his screams as before. This dub is inferior to the Saban dub though, you're right there.
BIG THANKS for uploading this! :-) This is my childhood, and with all respect to FUNimation... I think THIS is just better (in my opinion) If i start watching Dragonball Z again, i rather watch the first 53 episodes from Ocean Dub than the Remastered dub from FUNi. After the 53 episodes, the original 1999 FUNImation dub ofcourse! (Not that the remastered bricks are bad, not at al... but i just prefer the Ocean Dub) Thanks again! ;-)
For me: Goku - FUNi, hands down. Vegeta - I think Drummond perfectly captured the evil side of Vegeta, so in the Saiyan saga and this saga here, he was better. But for all the other stuff, I prefer Sabat. Like for example, any time Vegeta is meant to be funny or convey emotion (the pink shirt, etc). Krillin - FUNi Kid Gohan - Ocean. FUNi's was annoying to me, honestly. FUNi's voice for Gohan in Kai was by far the worst, though. Adult Gohan - I could honestly go with either here. Piccolo - A lot of people prefer McNeil's take on the character, but like with Drummond as Vegeta, I feel like he can portray the darker side of Piccolo best. I think the current version of Sabat's Piccolo (Kai, the new movies, etc) sounds more natural and not as forced into a deep, raspy voice. It sounds somewhat closer to the Japanese version. Bulma - I have to go with Ocean on this one. King Kai - Neither of the two are even remotely close to the Japanese version, voiced by Jōji Yanami. The character is meant to have a more authoritative, monotone sound to him. Buu - I like Josh Martin's (FUNi) Fat Buu best. For Super Buu, they're both fine. With Kid Buu, I also have no preference. Cell - Dameon Clarke (FUNi) is the best English-language version of Cell there is, hands down. He is extremely close in sound to the original Japanese voice actor, Norio Wakamoto. Freeza - We didn't get into the more important scenes in the Ocean version, so it's hard to critique it, but what I did hear wasn't promising. I thought FUNi's take on the character in the DBZ dub was awful. It sounded like a chain-smoking grandma's voice, and nothing like the original intent. The new FUNi voice in Kai and Resurrection 'F' is amazing. Christopher Ayres is extremely close in sound to Ryūsei Nakao, the original Japanese actor.
I gotta ask, when you say Funi Goku hands down, have you ever heard Peter whatshisname? Watch Ocean dubbed World's strongest. his voice is extremely close to the Japanese Goku, except he doesn't sound too much like a little girl. Hands down my favorite Goku voice.
I thought Stephanie Nadolny was amazing as Gohan. Really bummed she was fired. At least she does KO real well. And I will always enjoy Tiffany Vollmer as Bulma. She captured her personality the best.

I'd say that that's a pretty good list. I'd go with Kalamis for Goku any day, but to see Ocean get any sort of recognition is refreshing these days.
