Is It Hard To Tile A Pool?

  • From www.swimmingpo... - Installing tile in a swimming pool is definitely not as easy as people think and not at all like tiling a kitchen floor or backsplash. This is an intensely techinical and challenging process that requires experience and a lot of prep work. Choosing tile for the interior surface of your pool means that you probably want to have a top quality surface with a long service life. Having poorly installed tile, choosing the wrong tile for the application, using a sub-par waterproofing system (or none at all) are just a few ways that drastically increase the rate of failure of the tiled pool that you have invested in. If you invest in a tiled interior surface you need to also invest in learning how to install it correctly to get a return on your investment in the form of a long service life.

    Oh Jesus, I watched a few videos and tiled my entire pool at my remodel with my teenage son and it looks 100% professional and probably better because this is my home and I care. My son started working for a large pool company a week later and after 2 months on the job, he was training a new person. Is it a lot of work? Yes. Can anyone do it? Absolutely. All the information is out there. Research, take your time and you can do it.

      @@danc6882 Respectfully I don't think that company is any good. Tile takes years to learn and even after years of experience mistakes still get made all the time. Can you tile your pool yourself? OfCourse, but there is a reason professional contractors exist. lol

      Yea, your teenage kid started working for a large tool company and started TEACHING someone else how to tile after 2 MONTHS!! LMAO😂. I sure as H@ll would NEVER hire a company like that! Professional tile setters have been doing it for generations. Some of the great people have been apprentices and journeymen for over a decade. The biggest problem with “pool companies” is that there’s no certifications, no ongoing training, no nothing. Any “teenage kid” can be a “professional” in 2 months and start teaching morons to lay crappy tile and start destroying $200,000 pools almost immediately!

    Pool tiler here, just fixing another tilers pool. Worked for my self for 5 years and came to a new company in a foreman role, exactly what you said people don’t realise how much work goes into them. I’d argue pool tilers by far the best as we render , set out and problem solve. Good video .

    Finding a good tile installer is difficult, every time I've asked pool contractors to change my tiles, they all say to just wait until the entire pool needs to be replastered. They won't even give me a quote because they don't want to do it, and I live in Florida, it's crazy.

  • @nogaffin
    @nogaffin Рік тому +4

    What I fail to understand is why when I go to Mexico all the pools are tiled. No plaster pools that I have found and yet when I look to get this done here in the states your narrative is what I hear. It makes no sense. If I replaster my pool it's warrantied for 4-5 years. So within ten years its a redo. Tile will last, what? 50 years or more? Something is not adding up.

    I thought I'd disprove you by pitching a roughly rectilinear 40x16 sport pool done with ICF so the walls and floor are flat, etc. Without tile, the plaster guidance seems to be a waterproof basecoat + plaster topcoat using something like the Sidercrete products. However, just pricing 22 big sheets of 5/16" Dekton Trillium like was used in the Rafa Nadal Wellness Spa is $20,000 + $7,000 for shipping. Installing those whole or cut into half sheets without the lippage being bad enough to cut your feet seems daunting. Thanks for the videos.

    I would like to see video of how to do it right. Step by step, you might consider videos on what membrane to use & how to install it correctly. Then you can provide photos of how to install the tile. You don't have to scare people, you just have to use photos & videos. Less talk, more illustration.

    Blah, blah, blahblahblah! So tiling a pool is an old ancient secret that you master after spending 7 years in Tibet, OR you can google for 5 minutes and find out that you need to waterproof your mortar bed, use an underwater rated thinset, use a quality made glass tile(US made is ideal) and use an appropriate grout made by the same companies that made the thinset. Wanna be Rogan, nerdy Steve could ve just mentioned that instead of his elitist nonsensical comments.

    In the long run, is it cheaper to tile a pool or have a vinyl liner?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  2 роки тому +1

      These are too far from being comparable. A liner pool is a liner pool. A concrete pool is a concrete pool. They are not interchangeable and anyone who suggests they are would be doing you a disservice. If you have a concrete pool then plaster, paint or tile are your options. Tile being the most expensive but the longest service life.

      @@Swimmingpoolsteve we bought a house with a pool that is a concrete pool, but it has a liner in it. The liner needs to be replaced and I was wondering if it would be cheap for us in the long run to just tile it.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  2 роки тому +2

      That is a concrete pool with a bandaid covering the real problem. Have a concrete pool installer / renovation Gove you a quote to restore it as a concrete pool. It will not be cheap, or probably will not. Right now you don't know why they covered the pool with a liner. Maybe they were cheap. Maybe the pool has major structural problems. Hard to say without knowing more. That is why you bring in a pro to evaluate and give their opinion in person. This is very valuable information no matter where you decide to go feom there.

      The correct way is to apprentice with a tilesetter for a number of years and slowly expand your knowledge through day to day tiletting applications. Or extensive trial, error and research I suppose. There are tile settin standards ypu can follow but pools still is a unique animal.
