IPOH is a food paradise. We’re road tripping around Perak and today we take you on a MASSIVE MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD TOUR around Ipoh to eat some it’s most famous dishes.
    Where we ate:
Nasi Ganja at Kedah Kopi Yong Suan, 2, Jalan Yang Kalsom, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh, Perak. Open 7 days, 9:30am to 5:00pm. Halal.
Nasi ganja or ‘weed rice’ is really popular in Ipoh! It’s called weed rice not because it has marijuana in it but rather that it’s extremely addictive! We have to agree! Nasi ganja is actually nasi kandar- an Indian Muslim rice and curry dish. We sample ours with fried spiced chicken, some okra, half a salted egg, acar (vegetable pickle) and a dollop of coconut sambal. HEAVENLY!
Curry Mee at Cafe Wah Nam, 30, Jalan Raja Ekram, Kampung Jawa, 30300 Ipoh, Perak. Open mornings and early afternoon. Non Halal.
Curry mee is another must eat when in Ipoh. We found this one to be delicious- the broth was well balanced and the coconut sambal and mint leaves were a winner!
Heong Peah at 362 Heong Peah, 362, Jalan Gunung Rapat, Taman Rapat Setia, 31350 Ipoh, Perak.
A biscuit maker who still makes these ‘fragrant biscuits’ the traditional way. A must visit and must eat!
White coffee at Sin Yoong Loong, 15A, Jalan Bandar Timah, 30000 Ipoh, Perak. Open 7 days morning and afternoon.
This kopitiam was the first to serve Ipoh White Coffee. It’s a must try when in Ipoh!
Tau Fu Fah. We were asked by the proprietor of this eatery to omit their details but you might be able to figure out the shop name from the video. The tau fu fah from this eatery is made the traditional way without using any preservatives or other setting agents, As such it’s silky and wobbly- perfection!
Beansprout chicken at Cowan Street Ayam Tuage & Koitiau, 44, Jalan Raja Ekram, Kampung Jawa, 31350 Ipoh, Perak. Open Thursday to Sunday 6:00pm to 8:15pm
Ipoh is famous for this dish. The beansprouts in Ipoh are said to be the best in Malaysia as the water that they’re grown in has an abundance of minerals. The beansprouts are indeed plump and juicy and the poached chicken is very good too!
We are in Malaysia for the next wee while and would love any food recommendations. Please let us know your favourite places to eat in the comments below. And if you like this video, please give it a thumbs up, share it and subscribe to our channel. Thanks so much for your support.

Perak...the Silver State is actually golden in terms of its foods...lots of authentic foods made in old-school ways and in rustic settings...lots of homemade foodies with secret recipes well-kept for years and small-medium food industries living on the passion for making it and keeping the tradition alive against advent of technologies...time are kept still in rustic and charming Perak...the old towns inhibited by people with lots of history and food secret recipes...and charcoals availability spurred the usage of it in making and baking foods the old-smoking-ways...I cant write enough about Perak food scenes...and the food tour along the old trunk roads of mining towns and coastal settlements...😀😇

You are so right tomie myspace- we absolutely adored visiting Perak and taking the time to visit some of the smaller villages and towns along the way. There were so many foods that we found that are being made the same way they were nearly 100 years ago. The history is really mind blowing! We are desperate to return soon and spend more time exploring. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment mate. Cheers, Sheena

OMG i almost died when I saw that you went to the nasi ganja place. That place is my family's fav! We live almost 3 hours away but we would decide to go on the spot, whenever one of us has a craving for it. My dad used to go to school near that place in the 1960s and he said he'd skip school to go eat there sometimes lol. We have a new nasi ganja restaurant near us but it is NOWHERE near as delicious as the one in Ipoh. Another amazing video, guys!

I can see why it's your family's favourite- we loved it too! Hope you get to visit again soon to satisfy your cravings! Thanks for watching and so glad you enjoyed this one mate. Cheers, Sheena

Lucky you catch this restaurant open. They are often close more than they need to open. So its very difficult to eat at this restaurant. This is the best tasting bean sprout chicken and kway teow chicken soup in Ipoh City. Try their side dishes also best 1. Chicken intestine. 2. Braised soft chicken feet.

Yep it is Tosh- this one was a cut above though. Jack and Carol who own the business have really nailed their craft. I'm sure Ipoh would be right up your alley. Perak in fact in as a state had so many incredible long standing artisan food businesses- many going back over 100 years and a lot still using the same methods to make their product. It was such an eye opener to travel around the state! And I'm sure you would love it too! Thanks for watching this one mate. Cheers, Sheena 😄

Malay Words of the Day/Malay 101: Today lesson is about Cutlery and Eating/Serving Utensils (Peralatan/Perkakasan Makan) ... Cutlery/Silverware - There is no specific Malay word for it since the custom of using cutlery is not one of Malay tradition ... 1) Spoon 🥄 - Sudu. Silver spoon is Sudu Perak (Perak as in Perak the state in this video. Perak got its name from the tin mining activities long time ago (British time in Malay Federated Sates) mainly done by Chinese labourers from Mainland China whom the towkays got the mining concession (the land for minings) from the Perak Sultans ... 2) Fork - Garfu ... 3) Serving knife 🔪 - All type of knives are pisau in Malay. Cleaver are pisau pemotong daging (because normally use to cut meats, of all types...remember daging is generic names for all type of meats, including fish meats) ... 4) Butter knife - Pisau penyapu mentega. This is more like my own version. Mentega is butter. Sapu is the act of spreading the butter ... 5) Cup, like drinking cup - Cawan. Cup 🏆 for winning tournaments is Piala, Bledisloe Cup is Piala Bledisloe ... 6) Saucer - Piring. Putu Piring got its name because the shape of it is like a saucer ... 7) Glass, like drinking glass - Gelas/gelas minuman. Glasses 👓 the spectacles is kaca mata, like the cool ray ban glasses Sheena sometimes wears ... 8) Plate as in Chasing a Plate - Pinggan. Chasing a Plate is Mengejar sebuah Pinggan. Chasing is mengejar. Sebuah/satu is a/one ... 9) Bowl - Mangkuk. A bowl of cendol is semangkuk cendol. Se prefix denotes quantity of one, like sebuah in #8 ... 10) Tray - Talam. Serving tray is talam menghidang. Talam also used in Malay food custom to refer to large round of aluminium plate to cater for 3-4 people eating together in a single serving ... Next lesson we’ll dwell with cooking apparatus ... Leafy vegetables/greens is on the card too ...

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 років тому +1

A hard lesson this one tomie myspace!! Much longer words and not ones we've really seen or used out and about except for piring and gelas. Hahaha love the Chasing a Plate reference. Might have to spend some time on this lesson me thinks. Very useful though! Terima kasih banyak tomie myspace and hope you enjoyed this video mate. Cheers, Sheena

Wong kee is my primary school mates shop ! btw Welcome to Ipoh ! The coconut sambal you ate with nasi ganja is called chutney. The chicken you ate are free range chicken that run in a huge enclosed mountain or field area. Only in ipoh you could get those chicken and the oils are onion oil on the chicken and bean sprout, the rice noodles you ate also is only found in ipoh, its more silky, springy and soft and doesn't have heavy rice taste to it.

Oh Taufu fa...I will always always always love you ❤ ... No matter what dear ... Time can't separate us ... Distance might try to separate us ... But we are always destine to be together ... Sometime I forgot you for your relative, Hot Soy Drink, but I will always come back for you diligently ... Taufu fa is one of my must-buy when I'm going to Pasar Malam when I was a small kid, up to 12 years old...my mom will automatically buy it for me if she's going, without the needs to tell her...but I love the one using Gula Melaka instead of plain white sugar...

In Ipoh, famous of Nasi Vanggey (or Nasi Ganja as mentioned on video), Mee Kicap Mat Jasak, Mee Rebus Ramli, Mee Sup ?? (Sorry i cant recall). These are business passed by generation. Also, in ipoh.. there is place called Padang Polo ipoh.. please try the big big burger ..SUMO BURGER..crazy insane burger.
Please try kuih PUTU CAWAN (uhgghh so good)..only available/can be found in Ipoh not elsewhere in malaysia. It similar as putu piring but the different is the filling. Putu cawan filling of white shredded coconut and salt. Super delicious. Only in ipoh. Also, "Rojak Mengancam".. the best rojak sauce EVER! Both can be bought at pasar malam.
