The Marvellous Thing is that This Steam Wagon Truck's Boiler Is Almost Same Size of a Modern Day Truck's Diesel Engine , just amazing. Compacting The Boiler Size in That Era was a Truly Engineering marvel .
When I was a child, today I am 65 years old, in my grandfather's road company in Italy there were still two steam rollers. I remember the ritual of turning on and maintaining pressure on the boiler. In the evening there was a fire attendant until dinner time who at 4 in the morning would start feeding the boiler again to be ready to start after 5. In Italy coal was very expensive and the rollers were fueled with pressed bricks of coal waste. During the winter some workers worked to make tiles with a hand press for the summer jobs.I feel like I'm telling a story from 200 years ago but if I've seen it it's not more than 60 years ago.....

When we look at the vehicles of today's age, it may seem very funny to some, but if these vehicles had not been produced, it would not have been possible to reach the current level, so the things that were made in difficult conditions with limited opportunities and knowledge at that time are very valuable.
There was a road repair contractor in the 1970's in the county of Fflint in the UK was looking for a number of these vehicles to use as tar sprayers. He thought they were the best possible vehicle for the job - the steam from the boiler kept the tar liquid and supplied pressure for spraying, whilst the regulator could be set to creep up any gradient at a steady 2 mph. Doing that trick with a diesel lorry simply destroyed the clutch, a feature you wouldn't find on a Sentinel. Unfortunately I neither know how he fared in his quest to acquire more, nor do I know what became of the lorries he had.
@@DeliciousBoi They were some of the last Steam Wagons to be built as roadgoing and working vehichles. They had a top speed of (I think) 45 Mph, making them able to keep up with Traffic.
Its amazing how they made it this compact. Im wondering if the wheels are being driven by the stean engine or if it is driven by an electric motor and the steam engine is the one generating the electricity just like how diesel locomotives do it today.
Those Sentinel trucks were absolutely ingenious..Especially running them during the war years when gasoline amd certain oils were scarce commodities...coal and water were still plentiful. And as long as you had steam oil to keep the mechanisms lubricated..you were in business
These were technically advanced,in their day, some having a top speed.of 60mph.They full torque from zero revs character of the steam engine, made for huge pulling power.
Older ones went to 50 MPH or so, these were built to compete with petrol lorries/trucks in the 1920s. This model was launched in 1928 but Sentinel kept making these monsters into the 1930s! You'd have to be nuts, of course, to go that fast... and know all the nearest watering holes.
Too bad they didn't convert the boiler to a closed-loop steam generator with condenser that burned Diesel or home heating oil for the last few they made, or well, my lack of knowledge. That would have been like the Doble steam cars in the US that were relatively silent running.
Maravilloso es ver x primera vez todo este trabajo que lleva aser funcionar estas máquinas .felicitaciones muy instructivo el video me llena de asombro y alegría ver esto muchas gracias!
When redundancy wasn't built into things, what an absolutely fantastic machine, It must be a privilege to be the custodian of such a piece of British industrial history,
I had the sheer good fortune to speak to someone at a steam festival, this summer, who had a couple of steam tractors on show. He told me about his lorry and one thing I remember is that it was kept lit, so cold starting was probably a rare enough occurrence. But that practice was not reserved for steam. In the 1990s, diesel electric locomotives used to be run into sidings and left running overnight, to eliminate the need for cold starting in the small hours.
If the sidings were on a slope, sometimes it was necessary to maintain pressure in the braking system. If the train was coupled, this could save almost an hour, winding the mechanical brake on and off each carriage.

Very cool to see that rotary valve gear tooz with poppett valvesz rather than having something more like what you would see on a traction engine or a locomotive. It bet this is a lot easier to maintain. Very quiet, too.
