it's a bunch of pieces from a bygone era, threwn together and made to collaborate within the last decade, so it's not old, not as it is thought it'd be. it's the only one of it's kind. Even in the air, a place where it's not that uncommon to see 60+ years old machines in working order, gipsy engines are rare now. i'd love to ride one of these. one with a silly big old engine and not much else.
I love that this car would probably sell at auction for well north of six figures and this dude's out here in a racing suit with a ratchet change and spark plugs with his bare hands. I'm jealous.

I immediately wondered if it was going to be throwing oil while it ran. That is a consistent theme with those early bi planes. Check out Kermit weeks if you want to see some Flight of that era. Maybe this is later enough, I know it had revisions. It was putting out a lot of smoke for sure. I like it but then again knowing that and then seeing what it was racing against made me think he probably should have built a body for it. Around the 1900s this was a thing but that engine is 1925 ish. Still looks cool and is wild! Got me clicking for sure!

Nice car - a small displacement - compared to other vintage racers they're upwards 28L. I think this vehicle is a blast to ride. Going slow fast is very real...
Road grit may eat at that motor prematurely.....? What a fun machine. If I had my wish granted, I'd have this vehicle in a reverse-trike configuration, to make it more quirky.
"what fuel you use, you change exhaust valve rings?" Compression ratio of these engines was about 5:1; and they were designed before leaded gasoline. This is not a highly-stressed engine from the 1960s.
@@PRR1954are you sure about that? regardless of compression ratio, it would need at least a lead additive, to avoid the need for hardened valve seats. It has nothing to do with load, It's due to the lubricity of gasoline, every time the valves close, They rub a little bit on the seat. These early engines were constant loss oiling, and they were ingesting oil all the time. Oil would get squirted on the valve train everyday before startup and it would drip down the valve guides. Some of that oil, even if vaporized by heat would have helped reduce, not eliminate valve seat wear. Also realize that gasoline refining was not nearly as exacted as as it is today, there were a lot of impurities that increased the lubricity of the fuel. Running modern fuel and oil blends in this engine would be catastrophic both the valve train and the bottom end.
The Swiss were always good at minimalism... How does that valve gear keep from grinding itself to pieces with no lubrication? Not even oiling cups! How do the back three cylinders get any cooling? Enquiring minds what to know!

That's actually quite modest for an aero engine.
Such a beautiful contraption.
I like the way he checks the carburetion by hand, on the exhausts, not many people know how to do that anymore. I used to do it on my bikes.
