    I've got a similar engine built in 1901 on a saw mill. It's a Fairbanks-Morse, 30 H.P. it belonged my Great Grand Dad then my Grand Dad and then my Dad. We just got through a complete rebuild and added a condensate recovery system. It runs like a top now. Mine has a horizontal fire tube boiler and not a vertical like yours.

      RE John Willis: Fairbanks-Morse “similar engine” (Steam?) I was not aware FM made a steam engine. But if you made a condensate recovery system it sounds like a boiler was involved. Nice family history. 👍🏼

    Hi, I just ran across this, I built a scale model about fifteen years ago, bronze and iron castings, about inch and a quarter bore, I never built an oiler for it, but have run it on compressed air, now I guess I've got to finally make an oiler for it. Thanks for showing this, I spent a few weeks finicking on valve timing till it was just right. Semper Fidelis.

    Steam engine me jo steam barbaad ho raha hai, uske liye alag se cylinder banakar aur us steam restore kar usase dubara use karne wala steam engine banaaye. Ap usme heater laga kar aur ek electric motor lagar kar automatic steam engine bana sakte hai, steam se apka electric motor chalega, motor se heater chalega aur heater jo hai vo apka paani garam kar ke steam banaayega, jisase apka steam engine automatic ban jaayega.

    The ideal dream drive would be a small fusion generator for heat. Small boiler, piston or turbine drive and a condenser to capture and cool the liquid media, so the whole thing was a closed system.

I remember looking at it and finally giving up and asking him just what the thing was. I would never have guessed! His shop had the old line shaft tools, but converted to electric motor driven by the time I was growing up in the 70's. But he had a hit and miss backup. I loved that shop!

The paddle wheels in the beam house also ran off a line shaft. Those were taken out, the first year I was there.

Там всего одна регулировка, ход этого штока, регулируется гайками, все одним ключом. По надежности этот движок на высоте, он заведется в любую погоду.

      @@rotattor pretty much, yes. If an engine has reversing gear it is basically both but a lot of engines were set up to run one direction only. In the engine above, if it ran the other way there would be less stress because the crosshead would stay in contact with the crosshead guide for the full revolution. At least the way this one was made. I am sure there was a reason for this to be manufatured as it was but I cant guess what it was.

    You do realize you don't have to keep the firebox absolutely full right? Wood has volatiles in it just like coal. That's all we have out here on the west-coast. It burns well. If you cram the fire box completely full, at a certain point all the wood you throw in is just going to go up the stack as smoke! Just like coal. If there's brown smoke coming out the stack, there's no cold air going up the tubes as the combustion is already running rich. Otherwise, good setup.

      @shane35ist 3 роки тому +2

      I agree fully, although I believe most of the rich mixture could be alleviated by running the steam exhaust through draft tubes in the boiler, a simple and efficient way to increase combustion temp, and efficiency

    So is this being repaired?

    • @lineshaftrestorations7903
      @lineshaftrestorations7903  4 роки тому

      Minor repairs are being done but nothing more. A few period lubricators have been added. The more it is run the less it seems to be leaking steam. In the followup load test video, this is a little more apparent.

      Steam engines don't have cylinder cooling, they run more efficiently when the cylinders are hot. Cold cylinders will condense the steam back into water, where it performs no work and can potentially even lockup the piston and cause damage.
      Also, the operating temperatures are above 100°C even when the boiler doesn't provide superheated steam, because as pressure increases it causes the boiling point to increase as well. So if we assume the boiler to be running at 80psi, then the boiling point of water is actually a bit above 150°C. If the boiler has a superheater which allows the steam to be heated separately from the water, temperatures can be significantly higher, beyond even 300°C, though I don't think this boiler is superheated.

      Technically, as long as the battery isn't dead and the wires aren't corroded, it would start right up. They're just electric motors with an ECU and a battery attached. Nothing much to do besides give it juice.

      @@djhagrid300 I'm not attacking you, I promise... but...
      After 15 years the motor itself would be so corroded it'd be next to useless. As well as I think the magnets inside would have degraded...
      Not to mention all the other junk that'd go wrong and render any EV a paper-weight.
      I can walk out to my Grandpa's 80 year old CAT Dozer that sat in a field for who knows how many years and with only minor interaction have it purring in short order.
      Today's tech despite its advancened(ness) and sophistication is laughable to pretty much anything from the 1950s... Except obvious exceptions; I.E medicine and whatnot.
