I would have ripped my throat out trying to hit the high screamer notes and With the help with a couple pairs of vice grips and a big red ballpeen mallet on my junk to sing this song through one round much less the way Ian Gillian just belted this toon out in the studio and live out on tours is just always been amazing to me. I have never heard any one person sing this tune as GR8T as the one and only Rock Vocal Legend Ian Gillian ! ! ! 🤘Peace & Play 🎸 On . . . 😎 DDHarris 1-2-2020.

The quality of musicianship you’ve picked up on is outstanding, its an anthem. It’s always amazing to me how much music changed during this time with Sabbath, Zeppelin, Cream, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Priest, etc. The music before them was very different. Not worse, just much tamer. I guess guitar distortion being a recent discovery at this time probably had a lot to do with it.

Well, even back in the day, Deep Purple was not much of a chart topper with two top 10 songs in the UK and US. Child In Time was not released as a single(?) and didn't even chart and so was/is under the radar of even some classic rock fans (in ten years of listening to classic rock radio in Australia, I never once heard Child In Time played). I suppose it's the same today, a lot of good music never gets to the masses, only to those who look for it.

Ritchie Blackmore is a classically trained guitarist. After Deep Purple he and his wife do shows around songs they write that have a 16th century feel to them. They write the songs based on a fantasy Game of Thrones kind of era. They are really intricate and beautiful. This was my favorite song until I listened to the Allman Brothers Band do their 22+ minute 'Live' version of 'Whippin' Post'. You should listen to that song at least once in your life. They are the God-Fathers of Southern Blues and Jazz. You have to listen to this 'live', The ABB are known as the best jam band, ever. Their concerts often went over 2 hours.

If you haven't heard it listen to Machine Head I think that is Deep Purple's best album all time every song is great Smoke on the Water is a great song but I think it is the least song on that album. Highway Star, Lazy, Pictures of Home, Maybe I'm a Leo, Space Trucking, Never Before and an unreleased track When a Blind Man Cry's. That's about as classic as Rock and Roll gets.

Stoqn Petrov There are lots of players who are ‘faster’ than Blackmore but very few whose notes are individually so clean and well-articulated. This made him very recordable in a heavy rock setting in the days before high gain was being properly captured on tape by producers such as Ted Templeman. Many high gain shredders couldn’t make that work. It’s also why he’s had longevity in his career, people remember what he played.

Totally agree, about Ian Gillan's screaming. I typically would not be too crazy about the screaming but in this song it works very well and fits perfectly. Ian Gillan's voice is amazing and I didn't see it mentioned but he was also the voice of Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar. I think it was for the record only and I don't believe he was in the stage production. This lineup of Deep Purple is amazingly talented, each and every one of them. This song is a favorite of mine and one I love to see first reactions, such as your own to this song since it's such an incredible song.

I literally couldn’t count the times I’ve listened to this song. Got to be one of the best instrumental and vocal (hell ...whole band) performances of all time.
Could weep when I hear the same Clapton, Beck, Page trio being trotted out as the greatest guitarists of their generation. They are all brilliant of course .... but Blackmore is completely their equal. No-one had the chops/skill to play THAT SOLO at that time with that precision/abandon and tone. It has to be in the top five guitar performances of all time.
I still hear people people talk about Purple as if Smoke on the water was their peak. It wasn’t even the best song on that album. Their 2017 album Infinite went straight to number one in Germany and Austria. They still have much of the magic, even without Ritchie. ( Steve Morse replaced him in the mid 90’s.)

To give you some idea of what this song is about, search Child in Time Vietnam War in UA-cam. Watch the compilation made by Marc Andre Ranger. By 1970, at the time this song was made, 40,000 Americans and millions of Vientnamese had alrrady died in the war. It had been on the news in graphic detail for years. The hell screaming at the end is a reaction to that.

Listen to there world famous live album. Made in japan. And once again, love your comments even though i don´t understand what your saying. But god bless anyway.
