That really feels like the ultimate key to the code - those moments where things get serious, and the parody takes itself seriously just long enough to counterbalance the humor, and it makes both parts hit that much harder.
Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is essentially a new series, a new piece or art, and both the original and the new piece are fantastic

Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is so good that sometimes I mistake which part was in the original anime and which in the Abridged version. And Alucard in Abridged is genius: he isn't an over the top moron, he is an over the top asshole and man, does it work, especially with his voice being suited perfectly for the character. All the rants between Integra and Alucard are pure gold, that must be said too.

I think Alucards rewrite works so well is because he switched between the two common personalities of immortal characters. One is the solemn, generally depressed individual who doesn't see much value in anything as he has seen so much. And the other is the character who truly doesn't give a shit about what he does, because why would he? He can't die and can't be stopped. So why take anything seriously?
he didn't even make much of a switch, cannon alucard is a complete nut case as well, he just doesn't show it quite as often but when you see scenes like when he transformes into a sweet transvestite from transsexual transilvania just to fuck with walter or the rape van winkle scene which was so fucked up that even the abridged series turned it down a LOT

Ah, the return of the Why Boner...WITH A VENGEANCE.
I've watched the series so many times, it's utterly brilliant. It's hilarious while being able to handle the more poignant scenes naturally and with a sense of sincerity. The aftermath of Alucard's battle with Anderson is an excellent example of this. It does all this with it's new charcter personalities while still being able to tell the story in a way that feels natural, like this a legitimate alternate version of the dark original.

It is so well done that when I try to think of Alucard's voice, the abridged version comes to mind first.
I had to explain to my wife that her favorite anime, Hellsing Abridged, was a re-voiced fan project. It took a while to convince her.

I find it works because unlike most abridged series, Hellsing Ultimate is a true parody.
It completely reworks the story and characters, but still tells/parodies the core story. Like they took a different route to the same destination. While the main route is a dark drama, this route is comedic, and the character changes are a reflection of that.
Most abridged series just create an off tangent story, and end up creating a new "story" that is just there to justify fart jokes/[insert dark humor here]. They are not really parodying the original series, just using it's animation to create jokes loosely connected by a "story."
To be fair Sword Art online abridged by this group ua-cam.com/users/SWEabridged did a damn great job at it granted its seen my most like making a 'shitty series' into something worth watching and improving it . Which to me I'm in that camp as the canon/real Sword Art online series just wasn't good to me while the abridged was better as it fixed a lot of the issues myself and other fans had with the real series.
if you want to see an anime the is a parody go watch ghost stories the English dubbed version because they did not care what they were saying.

I like to think that abridged series fall into 3 categories:
Type 1, MENTs have little to no relation whatsoever to the original plot, and often use absurdist humour to basically confuse people into laughing. Examples include none piece and code ment
Type 2, wallbreakers often, as the name suggests, break the fourth wall, but still stay relatively close to the original plot, with minor story deviations occurring on occasion. The most prevalent example of this is YGOTAS.
Type 3, true abridgeds keep the core plot nearly entirely intact, with the only significant changes being to characters for humour, and even then the changes usually only play up their existing characteristics. Examples of this include DBZA, hellsing abridged, SAO abridged, and (so far) overlord abridged

I do think Hellsing abridged is amazing. I mean, I don't cry a lot, and only certain shows can get me to cry, but

The team behind hellsing abridged is so talented that they had me bawling at Pip's death and the scene afterward.
Golden Raijin I know those feels mate, I actually came pretty close myself. I think it’s especially impressive because the start of the only *real* references to a romance between them started on *that* episode!
It was very emotional in the original, but Some scenes in abridged hit harder, others hit softer. in the original, Pip offered her his blood in the desperate hope that one of them survives this. It ultimately succeeded, and was such a boost for Seras that she managed to save everyone else still alive and make a joke out of Zorin, proving who really was the insect.
Abridged made it more Alucard giving her the final push she needed to cross that bridge, Pip didn't vocally offer his blood, but still gave consent, and Seras started taking in that memester attitude Alucard has himself.
And Anderson's death, Alucard and Anderson have a heart to heart, and Anderson admits that The Boondock Saints is his favorite movie which was a call back to a joke earlier in the series, Alucard calls Anderson 'friend' and finally Anderson starts to tell Alucard how to face his demons

personal opinion, a lot of the characters are still in character in a weird way. Police girl is still readily identifiable as Police Girl Seras Victoria, and Ser Integra and so on. I really love this series.
The best abridged series have almost all the characters be still perfectly recognizable while still being very distinct from their originals. It's a hard line to tread. Large deviations usually only work with smaller background characters, like, say, Popo.

If it was done more regularly, and they didnt put as much time as they currently do into each one... then I doubt it would stay as much of a masterpiece as it currently is.
Around halloween every year we have waited, and waited, and waited even fucking more, for that which is known as Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. It's like the couple months early Christmas Gift we have been waiting for, and then we finally get. It's a slow beautiful process, and one that will end soon regardless of the updates. They only have a couple more epsiodes of the orginal left before it's all over, so let them wait. Let them take what little is left, and milk that fucking tit for all its worth. They've fucking earned it.
Hell if anything i'd be more torn up about the DBZ Abridged schedule because at least Hellsing's is an actual schedule apart from the issues they had last year which they remedied. One line makes up for all of it. "Anderson it's only been a day but it feels like years!" Priceless.

To be honest... I personally prefer the abridged version of alucard to his original character, the main reason for this is that unlike in the real version, alucard is relatable, he is not some cold monster who can think only of killing and following orders, instead we have a Memester who actively has fun doing what ever he wants, and with that kind of power, I can’t see a reason not to be, I mean he is smart but he leaves the thinking to form 0 and the insanity to form 1 while having fun in form 4 and just being condescending in form 5 (girlycard).
So to sum it all up I understand that hellsing is supposed to be serious, but I can’t help but feel that a more long lasting alucard would be the abridged version, hell I would watch 20 seasons of alucard kicking ass and meming it up.
I'm the same way, the abridged just is more relatable beyond the just kill everyone mentality.

Well no shit, the Wayans Brothers are awful. Ever notice that Scary Movie 3 is the only decent movie out of all their series? Well, surprise surprise, they didn't make it. David Zucker (of Airplane fame) wrote and directed it.
I am a fan of both the original Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate.. I absolutely love the retelling of the story in the abridged series.. And honestly prefer their rendition of Alucards personality.. The only negative aspect of it is the amount of time it's taking to finish this masterpiece... one episode every year or so is, by far, too long to wait 😑😑😑

The wait can be painful, but it will be worse when the series ends after only 2 more episodes. I want way more than 40 more minutes of abridged Alucard, but since that's all they can do with the source material I think I actually prefer it spread out a bit.
They can always elongate it... but we've seen with the Black Clover anime just how bad of an idea it is too elongate a shorter work for the sake of giving more time.

It works on so many levels and I think one reason it works so well is how they can work contrasting scenes so well. What I mean by this is that TFS can make you laugh in one scene, then move to a badass scene while you're still riding that bit of high from before and really bring it together. They've also grown a lot in scenes meant to be sad and the fact they can weave in genuinely sad moments into their series where people also yell out "bitches love cannons", speaks volumes not only as editors but as talented voice actors.
watch something witty's SAO abridged where he completely rewrites kirito from an edgy but righteous character into a complete asshole and make everything more realistic to video games but less to the logic of the real world E.G the line to also i turned the profanity filter off
I actually prefer SWE's version to the original. Kirito being a snarky, knowitall jerk just fits so much better. Not to mention that they somehow made his character more relatable AND humanised him more with the trauma of watching his friends die.

I say it's not only art, it actually makes the story worth watching. The biggest problem with the original Hellsing Ultimate is that by taking themselves so seriously, they made it almost impossible for us to. Alucard is a Superman character; there's practically never any real tension, as his solution to any new challenge is to just say "Oh well, I wasn't really trying my hardest. Release limit level X" and then just beat things in the face. If you're expecting us to take your story seriously, this is boring and insulting to our intelligence. On the other hand, if you then couple that ability with an actual personality, it's entertaining as hell. Sure, we still know Alucard is going to win simply by BEING Alucard, there's no difference there, but we're having fun because HE'S having fun, and let's face it, wading hip deep through Nazi Vampire corpses SHOULD be fun!
Hell, it'd be enough if they just did that, just added some comedic value to the story, but they manage to do so and still make us care about the characters! The mutually sustained hate-boner between Alucard and Anderson makes us actually care when Anderson dies! Pip and Serras were given backstory as the show went on, so I cared about them! I got a rush of victory along with Serras, when her enemies finally knew her name, that I didn't really get in the original show. My point here is, Helsing Abridged is one of those parodies that actually works better, even as a standalone, than the original.
I do and I don't agree with you on this. Hellsing Ultimate has it's moments all be it not often when it has humor but being an anime that takes it self seriously these moments are generally not noticed and forgotten quickly. Hellsing Ultimate is supposed to be more of a thinking anime. HUA is supposed to drop the serious tone and make it more...casual while being funny. And the more serious parts are seen as better than before. Hellsing Ultimate is a special snowflake

yeah I think one of the reason why abridged works. show already has a comedic alttone but it is not that good or at center. abridged shining it and putting center so it works
I *LOVE* DBZ Abridged and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged!
One thing worth noting is that the guys at FUNimation also love those series. It's the original studios that seem to have something against Abridged Series. For example, there's a deleted scene from DBZ Kai that had the TFS cast as the actors for Hercule Satan's TV reenactment of the Cell Saga that was done by FUNimation, it would've been what they used if it wasn't for Toei who rejected it. I think that it's the Japanese studios that have something against Abridged Series, because a lot of them are prone to pull off some DMCA take downs on Western Fanworks just because they don't like it when others on the other side of the Pacific do something with their stuff, and they tend to be much less rational than Nintendo (who, as it turns out, had a more reasonable reason to take down AM2R than Federation Force (reason that I plan on buying today, btw)).
If you listen closely at the end you'll still hear Lani in Krillin's voice telling them to purchase it at the concession stand.
Reason why is because they haven't grasped how to use fan works as free advertising. Still have a very traditional mindset.
Also worth noting that other animation and video game studios have hired Team Four Star for voice work, which is itself a recognition of their talent.
To add my to bits Japan also has far different fair use laws and laws covering parodies. They do not care if it is legal in America or elsewhere they want to protect their property.
On a side note, apparently the creator of Dragonball is aware of Team Four Star and has no problem with what they are doing. It is apparently studios and the TV networks that are causing most of the issues.

The series is "art," yes.
Not merely in the ill-defined "anything can be art" sense that people use to clumsily praise otherwise forgettable works, but it is truly art in the original sense of the word: "That which requires mastery of certain skills to do well."
And the series is done well, done artfully.
Man hellsing ultimate is hilarious! As is sword art online abridged it's nice to hear credit going to SWE they need to be more widely known!

There are two Hellsings: first one is an old TV show, the other is the ultimate.
But where you see two, I see three.
The third one is of course being the abridged series.
I know this video is a few years old, but to clarify the last points that were made in this video: 1) TFS and Taka went through the same copyright issues as those other abridge channels and 2) it eventually wasn’t as frequent for TFS because Funimation actually did start paying them for making DBZA.

i must say, i’ve watched the original before the abridged ever came out and i wasn’t impressed. i couldn’t stand most of the main characters, especially Alucard. to me he was the poster child for “edge lord” and by then my young adult brain was to fed up with that trope i just couldn’t get past it.
The abridged fixed every issue i had. With a slight atmospheric change and an update of personalities it fixed all my original problems. Every sentence was filled with humor and many times i found myself in a fit of laugher. Some of my originally liked characters took a back seat for the rewritten Dracula, Madam Hellsing, even some of the bad guys, despite their atrocities, i couldn’t help but love. All in all, i think the abridged did a fantastic job with what they had and just like DBZA and SAOA, they made the series so much we better by a long-shot.

In my social circle, who *hasn't* watched Hellsing Abridged?
I've rewatched it several times and even introduced a good friend of mine to it - who adored it so much, that he not only watched the official release, but became obsessed with the series perhaps even more than I was at the time.
Furthermore, at the appearance of the most recent episode, I myself have gotten back into this franchise and everything and anything to do with Alucard. I'm even reading Bram Stoker's Dracula religiously!
So yes, I think it's art, and I support it's production and its right to exist.

the part that made me go fangirling is alucard's entrance i mean in the original series it wasnt much interesting or thrilling but abridged part gave a thrilling feel to it to those of you who hadnt watched hellsing go on the search box and type "hellsing abridged alucard's entrance" and you will be blown away after seeing how much better it is from the real one

Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is a masterpiece. One of the best ones I have ever seen. No matter how many times I watch this it is always entertaining.
I just wish more people recommended and watched the original one first.

No matter how good the abridged version is, if you watch it first, then you'll get spoiled and the original one first impressions won't be the same, but if you do it the other way around, your impression of the abridged version won't be worse.

I love the fight with Rip Van Winkle and Alucard helping the souls out the best but I love the whole series. I always cry in the original anime/manga. I cant help it but thanks to Abridged I can watch it without that :)

Abridging became super popular with Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh(more the latter); which would pave the way for others to follow, like Avatar the last air bender(TFS Member), Sailor Moon (TFS Member), Saiyuki reload, and in the more modern age, things like Miria Nikki, Sword art online (really good), and a few JoJo's(TFS Member).
I bring these things up because the creators of some of the older and more well known series, all joined the creators of Team Four Star (KaiserNeko, Lanipator, (Lupin and YuYu abridges respectively) and Takahata101 ) in what I think is a bit of funny dynamic shifting, since the oldest abridges are Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto, and they most likely inspired TFS's creators to make their own abridges series in the first place.

Eric Hall True TFS made it popular, but TFS themselves acknowledge LittleKuriboh as the one who started and inspired the abridged series industry we have today. Isn't it worth giving a nod to the person who started it all?
There's a difference between "started" or "inspired" and "popularised". it's definitely worth crediting the people who did it (well) early on and inspired TFS, but it was definitely TFS who brought the idea into the public eye in a big way.
Other abridging was going on sure, but if it wasn’t for TFS, it wouldn’t be anywhere close to what it is now.

This is definitely one of TFS' best works. They made a badass anime series into an amazing laugh fest. Watched a few episodes of the original anime because of this, as well.

Every time I hear Alucard speak in Hellsing Ultimate Abridged, I always think of Cell from DBZA...and it still works! The constant back and forth between the Vatican and the Hellsing Organization is absolutely EPIC, how they treat Her Majesty the Queen is hilarious, and how the Major just RUINS the Sound of Music for her near the end is just...PRICELESS!
I remember a time when alucard was still stuck on a boat and every episode after wasn't uploaded yet.
Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is beautiful and I watched Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate for the same reasons as you mate.
I love how hellsing ultimate abridged completely "revamped" the story (pun kinda intended) how they mixed up the flow of events while still keeping the original product in crisp condition. Character design was glorious, where like you said Alucard is "in the anime that is" a silent perfectionist who lives for others deaths, where "in the abridged" made into a "No verbal boundaries lovable shit talker" who makes stabs at the twilight saga, AND DESTROYS the Catholics with the "priests are pedophiles" jokes all while keeping the punchline the same, it's like them writing a joke 20 different ways, and ending in almost the exact same punchline. Seras, on the other hand in the anime, struggles with her humanity and vampiric instincts (granted the original hellsing did this MUCH better) and here she on the first episode, is like a little sister to alucard, where he annoys the shit out of her and messes with her while she's trying to work. Also the running joke in the abridged series with the "sexual harassment" in the hellsing house. It's all just....*muaw* excellent..
I'm glad they finally finished this. I gave up that one year nothing came out on Halloween. Went back this week and found out all 10 are done.
I love the Abridged series from TFS and Something Witty. Not only that, I feel that the success of the show would have driven me to actually watch the original source material had I not watched it previously. Big corporations (and UA-cam) don't seem to understand why and how people enjoy this and how it can promote them if properly used. You can argue the animators do not get "paid or credited" but first, everyone is credited, and many of these abridged shows DO do their own animation and editing. It's like taking a silent movie and dubbing your own audio, taking a book and rewriting the story, or taking a famous scene from a movie and recreating it with costumes and alternate dialogue. Fair Use has always been a slippery slope, but a majority in my opinion (that I have heard) have never been ofensively blatant about posting work as their own and changing enough to make it unique.
Honestly, anyone who protests against Abridged series should also be protesting against fanart and fanfiction. They're all the same. Using preexisting characters and/or designs to create a new piece of work. None of which takes away from the original content creator, and even promotes the original content.
I actually watched abridged before the actual anime and I actually was really impressed with both.
Hellsing Ultimate Abridged introduced me to the original anime, I am now obsessed, and I was very VERY glad that the abridged series did not spoil the ending of the original. It feels like the abridged series is like it's own anime, and they both have completely different points of view on the story. I cried when Alucard died on the original. And I laughed when he talked to Satan in the abridged. They are both truly works of art.
Hellsing Abridged is the only reason my husband even found out about Hellsing. And we binge watched it from then on. Now he's upset because there's no more episodes.

Not gonna lie, everything abridged TFS has made feels like a mini holiday every time that I've watched them. Anytime I see a new TFS, Hellsing, or even FF7 Abridged it makes my day and night on the spot. I can't really say that about anything else.

well I'm glad to see that abridged anime is taken so seriously. I was rewatching helssing again when I found the abridged version and I have to admit, I watch every.single.episode.of.it non stop instead of just rewatching the anime like I was planning to do...I really LOVED the humor, the voice acting and the characterization of the characters (and of course the musics and songs XDXDXD hilarious and badass at the same time) seriously, it was a really good work and now I'm gonna try watching another abridged anime they made because it's awesome!
Summarised perfectly, but I’d like to ad that the abridged series balances the show perfectly. Original Hellsing Ultimate has great characters, solid action, great atmosphere, and Great premise. Where the series falls is it’s story (it’s fine, you don’t watch this show for the story) by making this show a comedy, you’re circumventing the ridiculousness of the story, because you’re no longer forced to take it seriously. (That and the alucard re-write is perfect)

i was just gonna say the absurdest/immature humor juxtaposes the dark morbidness and ultra violence.
but, then i realized that was done in the original as well in a way, mostly through Seras being the one little beacon of timid brightness amidst all the gore. there's other "classic anime" chibi stuff sprinkled in too to keep things from ever staying completely drab, but as someone who's not that into dark stories or gore, Seras stood out more consistently.
