My Girlfriend is blind and this could be a very freaking nice option to let her play VR. We did try skyrim VR and half life alyx because the directional sounds works pretty good but it requier alot of "me" involve to explain the surrounding. With haptics feedbacks (as much as possible), she could ultimatly go trough a game with me only text to speech quests and such. now, lot of you might be well.. could be useless anyway since she cant see the 3d effect of the googles. Hmmm yeah but still, she autonomously games at some games, she just finished her master at university and she is now working. oh and of course, she won 2nd place in 2019 at the world championship of blind fencing. After all that, what i meant is that she is not about to give up on having a descent VR experience and YOU SIR, you are on your way to make this possible so much faster then we ever expected. thanks alot! im following this closely and oh yeah!, happy new year! ;)

I bet it wouldn't even be too hard to get text to speech to work for the menus, if you haven't already got that figured out. There is also a mod already out there that uses text to speech to voice the player, and it even has voice recognition so you could speak for the dialogue instead of trying to figure out which one is the one you want to use.

Hey Lucas, I am thoroughly impressed with your work! I'm a Robotics major with special interest in open-source and using robotics with therapeutical purposes. Right now, I'm helping a group of undergrads develop a very simple system that aims to sort of "convert" the feeling of warmth or cold on your fingertips with a stable pattern of different textures applied on the wrist. The coding, system and components are in a very early stage, but I feel like your project could benefit from what we gathered so far, as per to increase immersion with therapeutical intent rather than for entertainment purposes. If you are interested, please let me know. Regardless, I'll be following your progress on this incredible project closely!

A path moving in different directions and I can do. The idea came to me yesterday and is based on something that has been used for at least 50 years. It's a chemical filler. Simple and elegant solution. At the top there is a small ball that moves as you write. If you make a board with a lot of them, but bigger ones, you will slide on them in any direction without moving. If they touch, you can use someone in the same way as with a laser mouse to determine in which direction and how fast a person is moving.

VR haptic gloves (to feel VR items), with precise finger tracking (even when cameras can't see them) & the ability to simulate 8 buttons by touching finger tips to thumb, would take VR to the next level with universal appeal. I have a top of the range RTX4090 PC but I hate game controllers, with visual finger tracking being too unreliable, so I won't buy VR gear until gloves like that are available.i really hope you can help these gloves become a reality, and if so, sign me up for some. :)

This needs to happen. If this actually works, which it seems like it does, then I hope you get the attention of Valve or something so that they can fund development on this, get the best parts possible for reliability, performance quality, and shrink it down a bit, and then bring this to market as a consumer device.
I'm not sure if you've innovated beyond what some of the big companies have played around with in their labs, but if you've managed to develop a working prototype that is most importantly very low cost with honestly a great start on the size of it too, then this has massive potential for actually becoming a legit consumer device at a consumer price point.
Maybe not $60 if you team up with some company, but even if it were $300 by the end of it with their help and ability to source the right components and materials and R&D the crap out of it, for high quality consumer haptic gloves, the index controllers cost that much. It's entirely possible and you would be the cause for what changes VR forever.
Keep doing what you're doing man and make these the best haptic gloves at the lowest price point possible.
Just please try to get Valve's attention, or any company that has the ability to take make the most out of it and bring this to consumers! (preferably Valve because...it's Valve, and they literally own steamvr lol). It would be a dream to see this become reality in a consumer device..

That’s really clever, I wouldn’t have thought of variable end-stops. I bet you could shrink the design a little if you could use the servo axle as the spool axle and mounting the servo paddle inside the spool, but that would mean further disassembling the badge reel in a way that may not be possible. Your design doesn’t look too heavy either.
I still think linear solenoids would be better actuators and feedback mechanisms for this project, making the hardware more compact in exchange for more complicated electronics, but I’ve recently had to use solenoid actuators in a project. Wow are they more expensive than a servo. I’ve got to the point where it’s optimal to design my own solenoids that can provide the radial rigidity and force required, and that requires brackets for bushings and all sorts of other garbage. You may have some luck designing a custom solenoid on the cheap, since it doesn’t need to be very rigid in the radial direction, but it would likely be pretty tough and may be a waste of effort.

This is awesome! The only thing holding me back is how cumbersome it looks, and how it seems like it might be a pain to get off and on, as well as durability. Prototype 5 should totally be optimizing and streamlining the glove, maybe giving it a shell to hide all the electronics and hold them in place better, making it so the glove can be slipped on and off without worry of breaking anything, and making it more compact, etc. Most of all, wireless would be a HUGE added perk. Having a big usb b cable is pretty clunky. To me, this project looks like it is ready to move out of prototype and ready to move onto a more user friendly development scheme. This isn't me saying you should do it this way or that way, it is just my suggestions and ideas. It is your project fully and you are free to do whatever you want with it. Honestly, if I were Valve, or any of these other big VR companies, I would be really embarrassed! This guy has managed to make fully functional VR haptic feedback gloves and made them free for everyone to build! And for only 60 dollars! Just goes to show how these big companies that are developing this stuff are seriously ripping everyone off. If a small team of like 3 guys can do this over the course of a year or two, then these companies should be able to do the same, make it look nicer, and sell it for relatively cheap with a giant team of people working on it. This is so cool! Aahhhh!

I've been following this project for a few months and I have to say that this is exceptional and you are very bright. I got a buddy who reminds me a lot of you and he's looking to go to MIT - you make me think he'll fit right in. Him and I are building a pair of the gloves right now and I really hope we can build a treadmill too whenever you start work on that. Love the commitment to open source. Peace from Jersey and keep it up!

    1. Holy crap these look like irl Russels
    2. We definitely need more entry-level tech in the VR space, and doubly so for stuff that isn't Facebook-monopolised
    3. My main question with these is how they work with guns, can it be configured so that a simulated gun can stop each finger at a precise point around its virtual grip, and can the trigger be simulated with resistance and possibly a break?
    4. Pronouns would be nice as you have a really neutral presentation and I wanna make sure I respect that if its what youre going for
Just found the channel and subscribed to see where it goes.

Not gonna lie, im here cause of LTT's video but i've been hooked on VR for so long. I love showing it to friends and family and having it blow their mind. Super keen to have a go build them. Be super cool if there was ever a way to hack them directly into the Quest2, on the go full hand VR.....stuff of dreams right there

Looks awesome, will definitely be building a pair. A few of our students are really into VR and FPV drone racing + simulators. Would love to setup some kind of wireless solution similar to the quest 2 airlink so we can give people the experience wire free in our lab! I'll be sure to join the discord and show progress and show issues we run into. Fantastic work!

As someone who has been intrigued in the world of virtual reality, Brooke turning into their personas to be recorded and live streamed in the internet, and worlds where u use literal physical movements, I would love to see gloves work so well and become affordable to look like they are holding and taking drinks of something, or my idea of using a “hand cam” with a controller to show my hand movements onto a virtual controller.
I do believe you will create something wonderful in the market and be sure I will def get some when it comes around for comfort use on objects and items.

This is great. I think the next evolution would be to servo push-pull resistance based on your body’s center of gravity. This would allow you to touch the contour of objects of any size based in your proximity to that object, as opposed to just touching what you hold.
