Sabicas was just as good if not better
Sabicas was great, but he was no Paco. Paco pushed Flamenco into the stratosphere of guitar playing and everyone who encountered him was blown away by his prowess.
@@AndrewWesthoff I'm not qualified to judge but it was notable that when Paco died just about every great flamemco musician and dancer called him the greatest flamenco musician ever. Of the current generation I'd recommend checking Jose Manuel Leon. His melodic and harmonic ideas are phenomenal and his rhythm otherworldly.

To me, Paco was such an example of "otherworldly technique at the service of musicianship and melody". I saw this trio live here in Italy, and I still remember the guy sitting next to me, he was a professional guitarist and he was all the time sitting on the edge of his chair, sweating and putting his hands to the hair in awe, and at the end of the concert he was just crying like a baby and willing to go home and burn his guitar. :-D
I've watched a number of interviews with Paco. In one of them, an old one, I remember the journalist, surprised because no matter what the question the guitar would always be part of the answer, saying to Paco: "But mr. De Lucia, you make it look like you MARRIED with your guitar!". And Paco, without the slightest change of expression: "Yes. And what a demanding wife she's been! She wanted all of my life, and I had to deliver!". You can imagine the face of the journalist... Couldn't say anything for maybe 10 seconds :-D .
And in another one, he says that yes, he was blessed for being born with a natural talent, yet, since the age of 4, he spent up to 14 hours DAILY on his guitar... :-O

What made Paco was not only that he was an absolute grandmaster guitarist, but he was also the quintessential Spaniard flamenco guitarist. His pose and posture, his long hair, open shirt, brooding intensity. Just his physical appearance is art.

My father had De Lucia as an idol...he played here in sweden with people like janne lucas, fred åkeström and cornelis, he (in the 70's) also lived in spain for about 10 years absorbing the style om guitarplay....was proud of him, sadly he died in 2012 at 63.

Paco had committed to performing the Concierto de Aranjuez, but forgot about it until one month before the performance. Since he couldn't read music, he hired a musician who could translate the score to tabs and retired to his home in Ciudad del Carmen in Mexico. One month later he performed 20 minutes of classical composition with an orchestra by memory.
I believe he did learn but not sufficiently well to read a concert piece.
@@Jamie-js3qw That is incorrect. He never learned to read music, as it is not essential in Flamenco Guitar. Regardless, he couldn't care less; he didn't have to. There is a video on UA-cam where the musician who taught Paco el Concierto de Aranjuez explained the process and his experience working with Paco.

The most amazing part of this is that Paco de Lucía was never professionally trained. In an interview he mentioned how scared he was of these shows, and how much he struggled to keep up with Al and John since he wasn't used to those crazy/unorthodox jazz scales and improvisations. Every night he had to push himself to keep up with them, and that opened a new understanding of music for him. Such a master!
When Paco de Lucia died, Keith Richards said: "you say that im a Legend, but there only 3 or 4 legends and among the all, only Paco de Lucia really is one".

I just discovered you did a segment on Paco. Wonderful. I've been a stunned-speechless fan since I first heard him in the 1970s. For decades, in Spain, Paco de Lucia easily held the position of greatest flamenco guitarist in the world, and probably in history. Yet he was the nicest guy imaginable and humble, always eager to learn from others, and teach. He was fascinated by jazz and the progressive styles played by Di Meola, and they were very close friends.
Yeah, if Paco's playing doesn't leave you gasping for air, you're not listening. He's impossibly good.

I saw Paco in concert, alone on a small wood chair in Arles. He set fire to the audience. Unbelievable ! Definitely the best guitar player of all times, all styles considered. Then I saw that concert in Montpellier with Al Di Meola, MacLaughlin and him. He was way above the other two. MacLaughlin was making mistakes all the time, missing notes, having to restart...Al did the job. Paco as always, massive and delicate at the same time.

Paco is like the goodfather of guitarr, many of the legendary guitarrist of our time had said they didnt know how to play guitarr after listen to him. Knopfler Clapton Keith Ricards Santana. Somebody say once there are thee kings on the guitarr and one God.

The 3 of them are amazing but Paco is just in a totally different level of technique, music and passion, a perfect combination. Although is worth it 100% to look into his live performances in his flamenco roots, so out of the reach of everyone! Paco para siempre!!!

Paco is the King of Kings. Do not underestimate the depth of flamenco culture and such exquisite fruits it produces. McLaughlin is a natural phenomenon an acquired taste but once you get into him you won't regret it. Great presentation.

I saw these guys live in San Diego perhaps 15 years ago. In flamenco there's an expression that is occasionally in song lyrics: "Maquina de coser" (sewing machine). This describes a guitarist who is very, very fast but has no soul. Both DiMeola and McGlaughlin are Maquinas de Coser. Paco played with an unmatched passion, with his heart and soul as well as his mind and fingers.
If you never picked up a guitar you watch someone like Paco you think "wow that must be difficult"
If you have played guitar for a few years and watch Paco you think "wow that IS difficult"
If you have played guitar for many years and watch Paco you think "Wow I worship Paco"

As a guitar player born in Seville, who grew up listening to his music as children hear lullabies, Paco’s music is just so overwhelming, so awesome. And watching him play with such massively talented musicians is the best!!❤️

After both I went home and looked at my guitar and thought why do I have it

paco reinvented flamenco from the 60s onwards plus the amazing cross over work he did in jazz, a true genius.
Something that people have to know is that Paco never received formal music training, he didn’t know to read a score. He learned in tradicional way flamenco’s guitarist have learned, from other great guitarists that never received formal music training (Niño Ricardo).
His compositions have changed the course of flamenco music in the history.
He was a natural talent for music at highest level in music history.
I have to add that to really appreciate how great is his music, is necessary to listen it in pure flamenco style, try listen LPs like “Siroco” or “Zyryab”, and of course his famous piece “Entre dos aguas”.

Great video! I'm from Spain and even though I don't play Flamenco Guitar (I'm more a Stratocaster guy) I think Paco de Lucia was someone amazing and very humble. There are many documentaries where he confesses he had always a bad time performing in front of an audience. He was so perfectionist he was afraid to not be at the highest level while performing. He said many times that playing guitar was a nightmare, but at the same time a bless... It's sad he passed away so soon :(

I was really into all three of these guys back in the 80's. I met Al DeMeola in a Guitar Center in San Jose, Ca. back in the 90's. He came to talk to people and sign stuff, but he didn't play. Kind of disappointing I was really looking forward to seeing him play. There were a lot of people there but they were very quiet. And he was just kind of sitting there. I don't think the majority knew of him. But I had a poster and a Guitar Player magazine for him to sign. I went up to him and he seemed really cool and relieved that someone finally approached him. I reached out and shook his hand and told him I was a huge fan of his. And my girlfriend at the time, who is my wife now, blurted out "He can play ALL of your songs!" He looked at me and said "Really?" I freaking froze! I couldn't believe she said that to him. Of course I couldn't play them note for note, but I have pretty good technique and I know how play in key. I managed to squeak an response. "Well, I come close but nothing like you." He laughed and everyone there heard and laughed also. That kind of broke the ice and people started to line up to talk to him. But he signed my stuff, f' ing awesome, asked me how long I've been playing and told me to stick with it and practice as much as I possibly can. I was freaking star struck!! I didn't want to hold him up so we shook hands again and he said "Rock on" !! He was totally coo!!!l

Flamenco isn't really a sub genre of classical guitar, flamenco has it's own parallel lineage and doctrine. Flamenco guitars are differently built too than classical guitars. They are related certainly, though.

John Mckaughlin has been a top favourite of mine since the 70 s,phenomenal player and original composer,Inner mountain flame,birds of fire and the Indian influenced Shakti albums all brilliant.Paco and Al also up there with him,like many others I regard Paco de Lucia as the greatest flamenco player of all,although flamenco purists where not pleased with his delving into other styles.Saw this trio 3 times live and Paco on his own 2,they where highlights of my life...R.I.P. El Maestro Paco de Lucia

The Guitar Trio Friday Night in San Francisco, what an album! Paco was always full of praise for Al and John. Not being able to read music he struggled during the improvised sections, not that anyone could say that looking at the guy. I still listen to it regularly. That was such a magical night, one of which you’ll never ever see again!

I saw Paco at one of his last concerts in Leverkusen. The first time in 20 or something years he was on stage with Al Di Meola. Pure magic...
My wife and I saw the trio in Melbourne (Australia) a long time ago , every note is still in my head , probably 30 or more years , there was no orchestra or any other accompanied musicians , just the three of them doing the impossible , never been bettered .
I started playing guitar at around 5 years of age. Finger style and bluegrass primarily. In my late teens I heard this song for the first time which changed my trajectory completely with guitar. I was playing and still play around 30hrs a week of guitar or more. Acoustic primarily. (Don’t like playing electric all that much and find acoustic slightly more genuine). I spent at least 3-5 of those hours a day for around 4 years going through that album from start to finish learning Al and John’s guitar parts by ear as best as I could. That was 20 years ago. To this day I still use it as a baseline to practice my improvisation. That work I put in really opened up doors and now I focus on Gypsy Jazz which for some reason I find more challenging. Coming from finger style to alternate picking to proper rest stroke at speed pretty close to this I find more challenging in some ways. Al is one of my favorite guitarist and this song on particular changed my life. Maybe you can do a video of Stochelo Rosenberg one day. Thanks for the vid!
I took my guitarist brother to a John McLoughlin concert in Melbourne for his birthday many years ago. What struck me was that he only required a chair and guitar to keep the audience enthralled for the entire performance. His story telling was just as entertaining andas his playing. Pure class. Emily Liberty.

I got to see these guys play together in a small club in the 1980s, and even better, the opening act was Steve Morse playing solo on acoustic and electric guitar, and he came out and jammed with the other 3 later on.

I have loved Flamenco all my life. Some rock stars are schooled in it, such as Robbie Krieger of The Doors, and he includes a Flamenco run in the Doors song "Spanish Caravan"

Al was very popular in the 70s his popularity faded in the USA but he is still popular in Europe. He may be the worlds fastest guitarist , John’s style is incredibly sophisticated, Paco bought flamenco to the main stream with big hits like “ have you ever really loved a woman “ by Brian Adams’s . These are guitarists who play at the highest level. A superb trio

When ever I got the chance I always went to see elite guitar players. I had the privilege to see these three on stage in Boulder Colorado with Steve Morris sitting in. Amazing evening and later on I met Al DiMeola at a restaurant I worked at in the Mountains with Jan Hammer and did some partying with them and they sat in with a local band just amazing and then he invited us to Caribou Ranch were they were recording we had dinner and watched animal house Al knew all of the lines great person!
I got the cassette of the album this is on back in the early 90's, if memory serves, and it's amazing to listen to even after all these years.

I understand that we all have personal tastes and many of us who play guitar our biased about this type of music, but it blows my mind to know that some people not only do not care for this type of music, but cannot stand it. It's unbelievable to me.

This is just one of many rhythmic song forms that Paco played, originally to accompany singers. He came to notice as a formally precise player who still had the emotional content, but transcended his peers and went to the USA to stretch himself. This is but a small example of his talent and skills. I urge anyone reading this to seek out his Spanish recordings, you will not be disappointed.
p.s. His career did not start with "Entre dos Aguas", 1976.

For the same reasons hardly anybody knows who Guitar genius Alan Holdsworth is and the reason most people who know of Frank Zappa have no idea he is considered to be in the top 5 Modern Orchestral composers / Conductors of the 20th century and a true guitar master who wrote his 1st opera at 15 yrs old ,all they know are the silly shit like Don't eat the Yellow Snow & Ram it up yer Poop Chute ,because music appreciation for extreme musicianship has been replaced by a fever for rap music , even my son's music teacher thought Zappa to be a joke until my son transcribed the zappa song " I Come From Nowhere " which is prolly the most technically insane song of the entire 1970s .

The original recording of this tune back in the late 70's had a sigh at the end of it by Al as if to say, "Holy cow, we finished the take and nobody lost any fingers!"
Phil, your review and assessment of these guys being complete technical monsters and still playing melodically, putting the song up front, was spot on.

Paco's solo performances also deserve to be reviewed buy WOP. He was a phenomena along with Sabicas and other flamenco artists who exposed the world to the spectrum of flamenco guitar music.

OMG, I haven't thought about these guys in years. I saw them in Austin,TX, back in the 70's ? Lord, I can't remember. I had albums from each of them back in the day. Also, there was an album that John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana did, called "Love, Devotion, Surrender" that I loved.
"Saturday Night in San Francisco" was my first introduction to all three of them when it was released. I was so blown away that it was difficult to believe it was live and not manipulated in a recording studio. Another excellent video, thank you. You keep making them, I'll keep watching them.
Ken Cheshire I always thought it was: " Friday Night in San Fransisco". And even worse I was in SF that night but didn't know they were playing. I found out the day after but they didn't play on Saturday night! Bitch!

Th opening track - the piece played here, nut as a duet with Al and Paco - seems to have been speeded up and spliced from two different nights. There's a video on UA-cam of which the first half is identical to the album version bit a tad slower. Of course, it might be that they played it faster the second night.
I remember watching Paco being interviewed where he admitted he'd been reticent to join John and Al because he wasn't comfortable in addlibbing and freestyling (my words) like his friends. They convinced him to just trust and everything would be fine.. this video is further evidence that he took their advice and just started enjoying the moment. Once again thanks for your wonderful explanation of exactly what is happening on stage.
Facts! I saw an interview where Paco said he didn't know how to improvise until he started playing with these Jazz guys! He clearly enjoyed the experience greatly!

I clicked like before I saw the video analysis. Saturday Night In San Francisco is the greatest instrumental album of all time. What a defining moment for me when I heard it as a teen in the mid 80's. I still have the alum.Need to purchase the CD
