You have to understand that these guys are legends, both at the top of their genres. It takes talent, and a lifetime of dedication to reach where they are.
There are even older legends who's names escape me at the moment but, in recent times of being recorded where anyone can hear I'd say Paco is at the top. He also gets many bonus points from me for his finger style instead of picking. I tried finger picking and it's way more dedication todo it on the level he does than using a pick. Sadly gave up on it because I suffered nerve damage and can't sense what I'm doing except with a pick.
not just top of their genres. true virtuosity is beyond genre. for guitarists, the flamenco tradition is the highest level of virtuosity a guitarist can achieve.
AL was at this level before he was old enough to vote! A child virtuoso in the truest sense, he was called upon to be the guitarist in Chick Corea's jazz-fusion supergroup, Return to Forever at age 17. It's artists like him and drummer Senri Kawaguchi that make the case for reincarnation quite plausible.
@@Stanley_Streamerand to think he didn’t even make Rolling Stones top 250?! Sickening. I was so enraged at their list. No Alan Holdsworth, no Yngwei Malmsteem, Alex Lifeson, Ted Nugent. While there isn't concrete proof for either of these quotes, the media often resorts to using rock stars' opinions to validate the genius of Paco or flamenco. Shortly after Paco's passing, there was an article translated from Spanish entitled "Rock Stars don't understand flamenco" in El País, which sheds light on this issue. Nevertheless, it's widely agreed that Paco was an unparalleled talent in the realm of flamenco and possibly one of the finest guitarists overall.
Al just posted this on his page. So he appreciates you guys reacting to his video with Paco. I'm still blown away how Paco can finger pick this fast. Unbelievable.
The technique Paco use is called "picado" its not easy, takes years to master (or at least try to master) and its very taxing on the fingers. Pacos been doing it since he was really young. Its amazing that even at the age he was on the video he could do it without much trouble. Age don't come free and speedy techcniques are even harder as one grown old. Al DI Meola is another beast on his own. But Paco is flamenco, its in his blood. When one talk about flamenco, only a very tiny amount of guitarist can be considered to be in the same boat as Paco. And most of them said he was the best. Oh!, and lets not forget improvisation, they know each other for years, and theres no one time they play this song the same, its just a frame, and they build the song on it different each time they play it.
That video is probably the most laid back of all the versions I have ever heard. In the late 70's, they, with John McLaughlin, recorded a live album "Friday Night in San Francisco" that is really amazing. Terrific video..
Al DiMeola se vino a España a la Región de Andalucia para estar con Paco de Lucia y aprender música de FLAMENCO , estuvo muchos meses con él , ahora AL DI MEOLA es un fanático del FLAMENCO
Great that someone suggested these legends. A buddy at work gave me the "Friday Night in San Francisco" (there are three playing!) CD around 2007/8 and I was blown away, so good. Nothing that I listen to very often, but every now and then I watch a live performance by the guys, because it's just fascinating how well they harmonize and what skills they have!
I think this concert was in Hamburg, Germany, shortly before Paco deceased. RIP Paco! I like your video and the respect you show for these outstanding musicians so much, please more of it!!
I was fortunate enough to see Al play at a very small club in New Hope PA. It held about 100 people. As a guitar player, it was one of the most magical nights of my life.
The incredible thing is that Paco has it both easier and harder at the same time: easier because he has "four more picks" than Al, since he uses all of his fingers to pick at some point, having easier acces to different strings in short bursts; yet MUCH harder because using all those five fingers in unison at those speeds is, as any half baked guitarist worth their while will tell you, f'ing hard.
Paca was and still is the best on the accoustic guitar... He is a legend... Is like a super hero... I'm really glad that you react to him... Congratulations for your channel and saluts from Brazil...
I wish they'd shown more of Paco's hands, especially laying rhythm for Al's riffs. Paco's influence in the flamenco world was huge and he helped mentor Al.
Two fantastic legends playing together they make a full band with only two guitars. It´s amazing. They are playing the guitars and looking at the other one. WOW.
The first time I saw Al Di Meola was when his band opened for Santana at Merriweather Post Pavilion (in Maryland), August 1980. That show blew me away (Di Meola jammed with Santana during the encore)! Then I saw the Paco De Lucia/Al Di Meola/John McLaughlin show at DAR Constitution Hall (Washington D.C.) the next year. The live album that came out from that tour is still one of my favorite live albums of all time! I also saw a later tour with those same guys (at The Wax Museum) with special guest Steve Morse!! OMG! It was ridiculous! I've seen Al with Return to Forever a couple times too, as well as on the Electric Rendezvous tour. He is so amazing! You guys should hear him plugged in! He RIPS!!
Paco de Lucia y el resto de los mortales que rascamos una guitarra... La unica vez que he llorado en un concierto fue escuchando y viendo a este señor... Se te echa mucho de menos Maestro
I saw Paco, Al, and John McLaughlin in the early eighties, with Steve Morse opening, and joining them during the show. It was quite exhausting. In a good way.

Wow, I didn't know you reacted to this. In the 1980s I ran across a guitar magazine and there was an article about who is the most influential guitarist. They asked a couple dozen of the top guitarist their opinion. Over half of the guitarists polled had 1 name in either #1, 2 or 3. That name was Al DiMeola. I went to the record store but could only find Elegant Gypsy. This song is on it. Totally blew me away. I spent 30 yrs tracking down his albums, I have all but 2. Amazing body of work.
