This week on TestDrive we have the unique opportunity to take the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ Sport on a road-trip to Michigan and see how this mid-size luxury SUV EV performs over 1,300kms in 3 days of vacation. We go over our experiences charging this full EV in unfamiliar areas, how the energy efficiency was during our trip, and our total costs to charge this vehicle compared with a similar gas vehicle. We discuss our thoughts on taking EVs on a road trip, and some thoughts about the LYRIQ specifically.
Unlike many EV drivers, we purposely did NOT plan out our trip aside from general areas we wanted to visit. We did NOT use A Better Route Planner, or other apps to map out charging locations, rather we looked at places we wanted to visit and searched for charging stations along the way. Follow along with us as we explore Michigan in the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ and see how road-trip worthy electric cars can be.

Thanks for the video. Road tripping EVs really helps to better understand the vehicle and a snapshot status of the charging network.

That's why we wanted to do this, any of the EVs Nile has reviewed have been great, but that's because he's driving them around home with a home charger. Being thrown into a situation like this where we have to rely on public charging gives us a much better idea of how these vehicles are to live with.

As a Cadillac driver, I really like the Lyriq. I am not really an SUV fan though, but I still like the look and the interior of the Lyriq. I just bought a 2024 CT4-V, which I hope to have for a few years. I also like the new Optiq. (I am in Ontario.)

The good thing about the Lyriq is while it's technically an SUV, the low roofline and overall shape make it feel more like a wagon. I spotted a few Equinox EVs during our trip, I'd have thought GM would have launched the Optiq first like they had with this.

Nice spot! We're seeing more Lyriqs on the road, most are black or silver.

We're getting there! You CAN make an international road trip...on the spur of the moment...in an EV. That is very heartening news!
As with Rolls-Royce, electrifying a Cadillac just feels right to me.
When I first saw a Cadillac in about 1962...that 1960 model (that's what Dad said it was) looked like a spaceship. It was disappointing to hear the owner having to try several times to start his poorly-maintained....utterly unremarkable...regular V-8. It sounded like a Chevy or Ford.
Immature little me expected a jet noise or an electric motor or rocket power or something magical. What a letdown. It great to see that oversight corrected with this model!
Here on O'ahu. a "road trip" is no longer than 180km (without turning back at Makua or Mokuleia, for instance...). EVs were MADE for Hawai'i!
Hope you enjoyed a lovely Canada Day road trip in style and comfort. Aloha!

We definitely enjoyed our weekend, thanks! What is the electric vehicle marketplace look like over there in Hawai'i? Is the infrastructure in place or has adoption been slow so far?

    Opinion on the Nappa Leather?

    • @PRNTestDrive

Very comfortable, I'd say it's worth the upgrade. I've driven the non-nappa Lyqir before and there's a noticeable difference. After spending 2000 kms in the driver seat of this in 8 days I can say it was extremely comfortable.

I would rather have a Toyota Crown. Sure, not 500 HP but most of the time you don’t need that. Crown gets almost 600 miles of 14.5 gallons of gas. That is less than $60 in gas at $4 a gallon. The Cadillac gets 200 miles less range and costs the same to fill up.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. This competes with a Lexus RZ, and once you consider its specs and performance the Lyriq effortlessly blows it out of the water. The Cadillac is also leaps and bounds more comfortable and luxurious than the Lexus while being more efficient.
You’re still spending way more with an Insignia or Crown over the course of ownership or 3-4 years after purchase due to the regular maintenance that a ICE requires to stay running properly that Lyriq owners completely bypassed. _Then_ you factor in the fluctuating high gas prices while traveling across America and you’re saving more with the fully electric Lyriq especially if you top off before you leave the house.

How much is your time worth waiting for hours to charge a vehicle like this? I wish you say how long all together you waited for charging during your trip.

    • @MrSreich05

For that trip, probably 2 stops of 30 minutes. No more than you would stop for food and gas in a ice car. Most charge locations have food and other things right there. I just made my first road trip in my ev, stop to eat and charge and hit the road refreshed. I thought I wouldn't enjoy the trip, But I found it enjoyable. I bought the car strictly for my daily commute, but it's quickly became the family go-to car.

First stop was about 25 minutes, we got lunch and used the restrooms. Stop two was about 40 minutes, where we went to the store. Stop 3 was about 45 minutes, again went shopping. Stop 4 was 50 minutes where we had dinner. The most we 'waited' doing nothing was 5 minutes at any stop as we arrived back to the car earlier than we needed to. Could have spent more time at the store but we rushed back to ensure we weren't using more electricity than needed.
Had we had access to the Cadillac app, or Electrify Canada worked with the US network, I'd have had a real-time update on the state of charge on the vehicle like I do with other vehicles, or if I were the owner. This would have allowed us to more accurately use our time while stopped.
As mentioned, we never felt like we were wasting time while charging as we always had something to do.

It's something we discussed a couple weeks ago when Nile had the XT4, GM had a good opportunity to be a leader in hybrid/PHEV tech.

$97,000 and the hassle of looking for a place then waiting to charge up no thank you . Excellent review though.

How often do you drive more than 500km/300mi? That’s the whole point of this video, I NEVER have to look for chargers when I have an EV because everything I do on a normal week is well within that distance, so I charge at home for dollars and don’t worry about it. This opportunity allowed me to see what a long distance experience would feel like in an EV, something most people only do once or twice a year.

@@cliffpeterson8430 LOL no cheaper EVs are still selling like hotcakes and ICE trucks are sitting on lots. Rivian is selling as many as they can manufacture. Mach e's and lightning numbers are UP. Mach e is only 13k behind the mustang now. GM is about to start slinging cheaper EVs.

Then own two cars? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'd replace my C-Class with something like the Lyriq to use for 90% of my yearly travels, and keep my S-Class if I needed to go longer range, but realistically after this road trip I have a lot more confidence in using an EV on long-distance trips.
