I am IN AWE at your work, your plants, your channel and your passion. I've been binge watching your videos recently and 'your' moss pole approach will 100% be implemented in some of my plants! I hope you continue what you're doing, you're very inspiring and I speak for many when I say I love what you're doing. Much love from the other side of the planet :]
Very good idea propagating crawlers like you suggested!! Another way if I may say so, is to cut the stem halfway and repot the cutting alongside the initial plant. I did that with my Plowmanii and it saved me a new pot and the plant looks more full!
😂 I also can't stand the look of the rectangular pots at bunning too 🤣 hopefully they'll get better as more people use them. Thankfully the plants aren't as fussy and it will most definitely grow big with all the extra room! Another amazing video Jan, the passion you show is always a treat to watch and I always learn something new. Have a great weekend!
.. Oh boy, so that's what I just bought 😳 a crawler??.. But I fell in love with the leaves 🥺😊.. Well, I guess that I will have to just try and figure it out.. Thanks to you I now know how to handle it.. I hope.. Or I will have to come back to listen to your explanation again.. .. You're right.. The new pot may not be the prettiest, but if it works, then it will have to do.. I love the bottom though, not so much the color 😊 I've been watching a ton of your videos, and I always learn something new (even how to move with half a jungle) .. Your videos of moss poles, and how to water them for one.. That made some of my plants so much happier when they got something decent to climb.. Your soil mix and explanation about it is the best I've seen on any channel (I haven't had any root rot since, except from plants that I bought with Peat or what ever soil it can be - sometimes it feels like concrete and water takes forever to run through, if at all).. Now I get my spagnum moss, aroid mix and what ever else I need to my soil mix, from the Netherlands as that's the closest to me.. Even transparent aroid pots that also did the trick.. I don't think I've ever seen my plants so happy before, so thank you so very much for all your showing explanations.. It is highly appreciated..
Hi Jan :).....So satisfying to watch.....love the chunky mix....just seeing it....I love how the cuts in the stem sprouted....perfect :) looking forward to the update! I ordered a Plowmanii Citrus....it will be my 4th crawler...I ordered some plants before winter hits.....oh and I ordered an Anthurium Bessea....It was love @ first sight awhile back! Super excited for that one to arrive next week.....I hope spring is going well for you....I do not do well with the season change.....it seems to take me a month to adjust...when they change! Ok see you soon! Thanks for making videos for us :)
My gloriosum is in similar condition I have air layered the crawling stem considering cutting it and continue to propagate it in moss until it gets more established
Jan, I wonder if you put the new planter under the growth point so it has a chance to establish itself before you repot, that might help with the initial wobble. When you repot, just chop it from the old pot and add the smaller plantlets as usual. The only problem with this is having the floor space to do this while the new node is rooting into the new pot.
Totally an option but as you mentioned, i don’t have the space to do this :) it would also makenit hard to move the plants if you wanna take them to the bathtub or balcony :)
My gloriosum really struggle to open new leafs the only thing that works is putting in greenhouse next to humidifier any tips it's getting to big for my small greenhouse
Thanks for the video I want to repot mine that I got about a month ago.I wanted to ask if I put a piece of wood in the pot running beside the plant would it help roots to stick on?
I am planning to repot a Dean McDowell using your cutting and propagating technique. It is now winter in my city, would you advise to chop now so that I can then officially repot in spring?
Another great video thanks Jan. 💕 So, about those poor rejects that get relegated to the balcony. Is that the out of sight out of mind graveyard or what happens to them ? Give us a peek one day 🫣
Beautiful plant Jan! You've explained it so well that you helped me know that as much as I love it, this love affair has to be admiration but from a distance. I simply don't have the room, unfortunately. However you've definitely turned me on to aroids. That love affair has already begun. I just wasn't interested before I started watching your channel and loving your content. So thanks 😊
I was so happy to watch this video as my new philodendron gloriosum is arriving today!! I was wondering do you know any good books about aroids? Thank you in advance
Crawlers are probably harder to grow for you because you are used to climbers which are using bottom root system in your diy aroud mix and another source of minerals is from moss pole. So you have 2 separate mediums they can feed off. Crawlers rely on aroid mix from both sources, aerial and main root system. Maybe you can somehow change formula for your aroid mix if its mixed for crawlers. Maybe its too airy and it dries quickly on the top layer .
your aroid mix looks like it could benefit from a little bit more coco coir, i know you had a root rot issue but maybe some leca or pon in the bottom and more coco coir in the mix might help you go a little bit longer between watering
Have you considered, instead of repotting completely, just turning the pot a full 180° that it may turn and start growing back into the pot parallel to its already established stem?
I can’t wait for an update I really want that plant but it’s a little bit too expensive for me and I need more tips on growing it before I purchase it.
Keep an eye on bunnings I picked up one of these at a reduced price because it was growing over the side of the small pot. Much cheaper and now my leaves are larger than my hand size. Ready for reporting. I love it to bits.
Great info! Is the cutting to prop something you should wait until spring to do even though there is no repotting involved? In the states here so it’s fall now.
Hey again! I have a juvenile gloriosum that currently only has 2 small leaves. It's had a new leaf that hasn't unfurled and it's been more than a week. Is it normal for them to unfurl so slowly or is there something I'm not doing right? I basically follow all your recommendations (soil, watering, location, et al.)
Hi, I am having a heck of a time with a gloriosum cutting I got about a month or so ago. I bought it from an online seller, all seemed good for first week until one day the cutting tipped over and the roots dried and had to cut most of the roots off. Since then it has lost one leaf and not grown any new roots. I've tried clonex, propagate in H20, I've tried moss, tree fern fibers ended up getting this blue mold like stuff on it so I got skeeved out and put it back in moss (stirred in some pon and charcoal). If anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it
How did you place the pot in the room? Does the source/direction of light also somewhat influence the direction of crawl for the Gloriosum or is it mainly directed by the ground/container? Seems odd to me, that the leaves all tilt towards the light but the direction of growth continues in a straigt fashion (besides the latest node, which leans to the opposite side). Thanks for all the great information and entertainment ;D
It will definitely crawl towards the light :) but usually light doesn’t just come from one side, the plant is surrounded by light depending on its positioning. I move this plant quite a bit so leaves can go in all directions :)
You can get rid of the root rot bacteria by sterilising the old mix in the oven in an oven bag for 20 minutes but you also kill the good bacteria as well. It's never seemed to affect my plants adversely though.
Hey Jan ... I think you forgot to add the link for the rectangular pot .. any chance you could add it to the comments above? Love your content, I have started my moss poles, and I am learning patience as they are growing but not fast enough for me :) ... Len from OZ
I love that you explained reverse-engineering a moss pole technique for growing plants… which is you put it in a pot… ground breaking! 😜🤪 jk still love your video’s and your gloriosum!
Jan: “I don’t want to disturb the root system too much” Also Jan: proceeds to shake the plant vigorously and take off more soil. 😂so relatable, I’m guilty of this too 🤭
I absolutely love your style of growing plants! I've recently made my own moss pole, bought a monstera monkey mask and bought what I can from Bunnings but I'm really struggling to find the Coco chips you use. (I live in NSW also) Can you please tell me the name of the brand you buy them from aha. Really excited to start my aroid journey! 😁
I have a huge plant that is crawling along my table like over 5 feet and I don't know what do her, she is very beautiful with huge long leaves. I kind of adopted her from a co-worker that retired and I have had her for like 24 years now. She is getting overgrown but very healthy. I believe it is a type of philodendron or elephant ear. Her leaves are about 16 inches long and around 8-9 inches wide. I know I need to trim her but I am afraid to do it. I would love to propagate more plants from her. I wish I could send you pictures...HELP..
The climbers, the crawlers, there isn't a tiny leaf in that whole apartment 😂 as always great job and ty for the advice 🪴
Thanks :) there are definitely a few smaller plants (the once i got more recently) but the goal is to grow them all large :)
I am IN AWE at your work, your plants, your channel and your passion. I've been binge watching your videos recently and 'your' moss pole approach will 100% be implemented in some of my plants!

The pot looks fine on video

Love my crawling plants.
Thank you for this video! Helped me a lot ♥ Merry Christmas to you!
Beautiful plants and great helpful information.
Thanks :)
I’ve actually always wanted to see you do this repot with this plant. I’ve always been curious how you handle it.
Great video 👊🏼
Thanks :)

Love that pot. Very esthetic
Love this! Learned a lot! Greetings from Holland!
Thank you :)
Love the video, so informative and looking at your plants brightens my heart ❤
Try putting landscape fabric at the bottom of your pots to keep the roots from escaping through the holes :)
Ok, I did mine too. It's new and small , but coming over the pot already. I scoria to aroid mix hoping to avoid root rot. You frighten me. 😂😂😂❤🎉🎉
This is amazing, thank you so much for this video. I was considering doing this same thing, so it is excting to see that it works.
Those are the most huge leaves and plants that ever ever saw very awesome and amazed thank you for sharing
Thanks :)

I am from India...i like your all videos❣️superb👌 amazing work👍 love from India 🤗❣️❣️
Thanks :)
Growing these amazing plants needs great patience, but watching your video's does not help? Perfect Jan.

Goals 🙌🏽
Hey Jan what would you do if the aerial roots of a propagation cutting without a leave rotted away. Will roots grow back?
They can grow back just make sure the rot doesn’t spread :)
Love your videos they're so informative!
Thanks :)
You are so adorable 🤗🥰
This is my fav plant 😍
Thanks for the video I want to repot mine that I got about a month ago.I wanted to ask if I put a piece of wood in the pot running beside the plant would it help roots to stick on?
Mm you could do that but I don’t see the benefit. If anything u’ll just break the roots when you try to take the plant off the wood later
I am planning to repot a Dean McDowell using your cutting and propagating technique. It is now winter in my city, would you advise to chop now so that I can then officially repot in spring?
depending on how harsh winter is it might be a better idea to NOT induce any shock for now
Looking at pots in Amazon( last video, smaller pot ) 40 length but only 13 wide for new crawler ?
Sydney Plant Guy and a cat name Brad 🪴😺 Thank you. 💛

I was so happy to watch this video as my new philodendron gloriosum is arriving today!! I was wondering do you know any good books about aroids? Thank you in advance
Perfect timing ! I learned everything I know about aroids online, not really a book person :P
I’m enjoying your video, plants look amazing! Also, you sound just like someone I know who is Swiss. Just wondering what your accent is 😊
Thanks :) born & raised in Germany so close enough :P
love from Ecuador

Maybe you can somehow change formula for your aroid mix if its mixed for crawlers. Maybe its too airy and it dries quickly on the top layer .
How do you decide which end of the pot to plant your gloriosum? (Which direction will it crawl?)
It will grow towards the light :) so i base it on my light exposure
your aroid mix looks like it could benefit from a little bit more coco coir, i know you had a root rot issue but maybe some leca or pon in the bottom and more coco coir in the mix might help you go a little bit longer between watering
I'm more likely to water too frequently so less water retention suits my way of caring for plants :)
Do you think the self watering planter contributed to the root rot? I'm very anxious about using those for precisely this reason.
I don’t use the self watering functionality of the pot
Have you considered, instead of repotting completely, just turning the pot a full 180° that it may turn and start growing back into the pot parallel to its already established stem?
You could try but always consider providing sufficient room for roots as well :)
I can’t wait for an update I really want that plant but it’s a little bit too expensive for me and I need more tips on growing it before I purchase it.

Ideally wait for the growing season to start :)
@@sydneyplantguy thanks :) will do
Since you've done the choco on a moss pole with success, how do you feel about this one on a moss pole? Still a no?
The choco is a climber, gloriosum isn’t :) u can force it but I rather grow them in the way they want to grow :)
Would it be possible to put on a moss pole?
No, it's a terrestrial plant :)

Is it normal for them to unfurl so slowly or is there something I'm not doing right? I basically follow all your recommendations (soil, watering, location, et al.)
Just stay patient, but it could also be due to inconsistent watering and/or low humidity
I just bought one!!!
