I have a Hoya growing on a moss pole I made from your tutorial. It is growing at least five times faster than its sibling which is right beside it but on a trellis. The one on the moss pole puts out little aerial roots at an incredible rate, and it seems that it really assists the Hoya to put out new vines/runners (not sure of the correct term) from older nodes, which allows me to create a denser effect. It was an experiment after I noticed little aerial root buds on the original Hoya. I will now always use moss poles for my Hoyas.
Do you think a moss pole could help with blooming? I kinda don't want my hoya pubicalyx to grow even more and faster as it is already growing like crazy 😂 but after 3 years I still got no blooms 😢

Hoya Pubicalyx is one of the most prolific growers of all Hoyas in my experience, and while they do love to climb on anything they possibly can, they don't need a moss pole to bloom. The conditions have to be right for blooming as far as temperature, light, and humidity. It also depends on how old the plant was when you bought it. Some Hoyas take many years to "mature" and bloom. I have a Carnosa that is HUGE but has never bloomed and I've had it for about 2 years, and my Pubicalyx is 18 years old, and it blooms almost all year long. Hey Jan, thanks for another helpful vid. Funnily enough I'm growing my Mamei on a pole (experimenting) and so far it's growing straight up. Let's see how long it takes to 'turn the corner' and if indeed it does do what your plant did. Enjoy the rest of your week and the warmer weather we're having 👌🏼
Love your content Jan!! I appreciate you so much for the quality and consistency. Watching your videos is part of my daily routine now and I’m gunna try to be more active in your comments. Really love your vibe and the beautiful content you make so thank you!!!! Also- first moss pole I made after watching your videos, was my monstera deliciosa 💀💀 now I know better but she’s growing beautifully anyway! I will definitely take advantage of the prop benefits as you have taught us :)
After seeing your amazing plants I really really wanted a moss pole. Just one. I tried Hoya Australis last spring but it was not impressed 🥱 I prefer non-toxic plants so will keep hunting for just the right plant. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, it helps so much 👍
So much to consider when choosing to use moss poles or not. This will be a wonderful resource for future reference. Thanks Jan😻 Plants I've chosen other means of support would be, Syngoniums, several hanging/ lush pot epipremnum , although many have a double on moss pole( gotta have that giant Manjula who may get an extension finally!) Most of my self heading Philodendron ( Black cardinal, Warscewiczii) as well as the royal court ( pink princess, white knight etc.) Basically it's now a choice of who gets the prime pole treatment, everyone else needs to slow their growth and serve as fillers.😻
I have tried a really easy hoya carnosa on a moss pole and it was a waste of time...what I have done recently though that has turned out lovely is to propagate a whole heap of hoya cuttings into a moss pole but with the pole hanging horizontally (no pot involved) and the cuttings hanging down. It looks great and I cannot wait for it to fill out and flower with maturity as I have 7 hoya varieties mixed through it. I used coco chips rather that moss as hoya love it and they don't mind being on the dry side once established.
@@dragonflyhere actually I don't, but I will take some when I get home next week. I'm more of a watcher than sharer on social media so don't often take photos unless I'm trying to ID something...usually plants!!

Hello Sydney I enjoy all your videos and I do have a hoya kramson princess on a pole that is totally out of control I've been to lazy to repot it I'll get around to it soon happy planting
Love your nerdy enthusiasm and giddiness! Your have excellent technical communication skills yet don’t take yourself too seriously. I have learned everything about growing medium and poles from your channel, so havezero Monstera on poles, only my melano, silver sword and a Raphidophora as an experiment (probably about to regret that 😂). Considering trying Epi Cebu Blue since I have a plethora of cuttings from my giant trailing pot.
Also you were curious as to what i was using for my Vanilla Planifolia, i was using dried coconut shells instead of moss or coconut chips as it felt like it wouldnt warp as much as if i was to use coconut chips as the Vanilla orchid is really heavy !
Haha. I feel the same about spiders. Your comment made me laugh so loud at work. Glad it's Friday and not many people in the office. Lol. I don't want spiders to touch me either!
I have quite a few Hoya species. I do have some trellised because they are fast growers, most of them just trail or I train them up their hanging planters The only one I have on a mossy surface is my Hoya Imbricata. It doesn’t necessarily need to be on a pole but if you want the shingling and the leaves to be flat- instead of folded you need to have it mounted. Mine is going crazy and I have plans to add a cutting of it to a dart frog Vivarium which will give it the high humidity and flat growing surface it prefers.
I always learn from you! Thank you for sharing your passion - it's infectious! I put my Amedrium Medium Silver on a moss pole and she's looking amazing! I keep debating how tall to go because of space constraints. I love your Fat Boy and appreciate you sharing a way to keep it from being a 360° plant! I'm shy on space but would love one of those weird and wonderful plants. Ooh! Would a plank or bark support do the same for the Tortum? If I can get it to survive outside a humidity box, I'd like to enjoy it's beautiful form without needing to center it in the foyer or something! Be well. 💚
Hahah I love your take on spiders. Where I live in Florida we constantly have huntsman spiders as well as wolf spiders! They’re really interesting actually and I’ve grown to find them cute lol still don’t want to touch them though! If any come inside I place a cup over them and slide paper under and move them back outside 😁
I think it is time to go plant shopping because I do not have one plant that requires a moss pole! The only plant I have that truly requires support is my Philodendron Burl Marx- which is seeing a lot of branching off the taller it gets-absolutely insane amount of new growth the last month. The roots seem to be too short to latch on to anything, though. It was a cutting (from a neighbour) and I have to ask- do you think a moss pole would help or should I stick with the stake I have attached it to? Love your passion, it does come through and is catchy! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. :)
Great video! As ever. :) And thank you for being nice to the spider! As you noted, you know y'all have some spicy ones, so +1 please take care as the season shifts. I was always that little bleeding heart jumping between people and "pests" like "omg NAUR!! 😮 Don't hurt the poor little guy! 🥺" (And right after I typed that, you said "Oh NAUR!" Heh. The display looks lovely, don't worry!)
Out of my approx. 100 Hoyas, I tried the H. Kerrii on a moss pole. It is growing very well but not enlarging the leaves. Yea, my M. Peru is on a moss pole, no change, so now I left it trailing on top of the pole…kinda cute that way. 😊 Too bad I didn’t see you in the Miami Expo, I flew back 1 week earlier 😊
i put a monstera variegata on a moss pole but i'm having a hard time making sure it's always wet, do you recommend i just take out the aerial roots from the moss pole and replace it with a coco pole just for making the plant stable? It's already grown and rooted a bit in the moss pole but i don't think it's anything crazy because i don't water it a lot. also regarding monstera thai const. - i would like to grow it as a crawler like you are, it's still quite small (3 leaves) so when i repot it should i pot it a bit horizontally like you did to make sure all the lower nodes root into the substrate or do i continue repotting it vertically like it is currently?
Honestly your reasoning for the Monstera Thai not being on a moss pole makes perfect sense but I saw this video only after mine has been put on a moss pole 😅 And it shot out a new leaf immediately (it had a starting aerial root I put in the pole) Now it's got a bunch of roots in the pole a month later so I'm way too nervous to remove the pole 😣
In the beginning of my moss pole journey inspired by you, I put my Deliciosa on one…. No way I can remove it now and keep the plant whole, so on she stays, she’ll have a 24inch pot extension for her life lol
All my Monsteras just reaaally want to climb. Even my Thai con. It's growing straight upwards with larger internodal spacing than I've seen in most Thais. All leaves in one direction, basically asking for a pole😄 My Aurea too🤷 I like the looks of poles in general so they're just going to get what they want, haha. Probably more unpopular: Have my variegated epipremnum pinnatum trailing down. Maybe gonna change that in the future, but it surprised me with how nice it looks trailing
One could also add that while moss poles may be optimal for many of these climbing plants, they are not the only option. Where I live moss isn't commonly available so I use plastic poles with coco fibers wrapped around them. They don't retain that much moisture but they don't need to be kept wet either. Some plants need to be tied to help the aerial roots grab onto the fibers but if you spray the pole once a day or at your convenience, you do get some roots growing inside the pole for a few tens of centimeters. When chopping the top of an epipremnum, you don't get such a large root system to go on, but there's enough roots for a cutting it to go directly into soil and put out new large leaves after about a month. I know I would have got even better results with moss poles, but I still get 45cm epipremnum leaves so I'll have to consider a coco pole good enough for those who can't be bothered with moss.
The wildlife in Australia is terrifying, I prefer the snow without those spiders🇨🇦 Your plants are beautiful! Maybe I should try putting a moss pole on one of my calathea, maybe that's the secret 🤣 At my favorite plant shop, there is a hoya in a wooden beam that has been there for years and is growing very well. Great video interesting as always 🙃💛
This weekend I took moss poles away from a syngonium - The runners had rooted, but it does noting to mature the plant. I cut the roots and attached the runners to a trellis instead, and a rhaphidaphora tetrasperma. It just climbs too fast, and won't size up the leaves. I'd need 8 feet of moss pole if I had kept it going. Also now on a trellis.
Hi, love your passion and all you're videos 💚 One question I have is what would you do with a climbing plant that is well established but not mature and does not have a moss pole but I want to put it on one? Any info would be great, Thanks 🍃🌱
There’s an in-depth video about this coming out soon actually, but in short: propagate it and start it on a pole from the bottom :) don’t fix it on there in hindsight :)
It’s a support, but far off from being an extension of the pot! I have a full video in my Moss Pole Playlist where I compare all supports (moss poles, wooden supports, trellis etc) i reckon that will help:)
I have a philodendron Silver Sword it's about 6ft. tall on my lanai in bright light. The leaves are over a foot long. It's growing in front of the screen of my lanai. Should I move it to a wall facing the light as it's getting wobbly and falling over? I used a palm frond for a while but the growth stalk is too strong now and it falls over.
Sooooo….I have not given any of my Monstera moss poles. I want to continue to rotate so they will be bushy and tall but I have heard that the stems will twist and not in a good way. Thoughts? One of my baby Thai’s just gave me her very 1st fenestrated leaf and I just want all of them to grow happy, healthy and as big as they want to be. I also have been thinking of potting all 4 of my Thai in the same pot. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one LOL!! And, thank you SOOOOOO much for keeping things real!! So many ppl totally freak out if you do the slightest thing outside of the current norm and I just do not get that.
I'm debating putting my Monstera adansonii on a moss pole (it would be my first), but I seriously doubt whether I can keep up with the care for the moss pole. Decisions, decions... Nice vid, Jan; very entertaining!
Get a plastic pole with coco fibers wrapped around it then. You can still spray it and help roots grab it and grow into it a bit, but it's not necessary to do it or keep a schedule about it. I use these instead of moss poles and the leafs of my epipremnum aren't that much smaller.
The monstera have different forms (Large Form which is the typical Green one, Has larger internode spacing. The smaller form, monstera borsigiana has much closer spacing and is mistakenly, The Common Albo that everyone refers about. Confusing the larger Albo as the Green Variegate. So long as your roots are getting into soil of some kind to support itself your good. Highly recommend checking out bonsai’ing monstera over in the Asian scene. You can also use fishing line and have it hooked to a ring supporting the stem/leaf and just have that strung up to the ceiling or wall.
I have wanted to say this for a long time: please place your Monstera air roots back into the pot soil. I completely agree with Jan. Their airroots are thick and long. So save the moss pole.
Lol. I've commented "elephant ears" on your shorts for the Glorious, but not referring to Alocasias, just saying the leaves literally look like elephant ears swaying 😂💚💚
I have a snow queen and a manjula (2 each) and I’m going to do the same. One on a pole and one in a pot! Might do the same with my micans 🤔 Happy growing!
Very useful information, I like the perspective you have when considering whether using a moss pole or not!! Thank you!! PS. Sorry I laughed when I heard 'ph'uck from Jan 🤣
I work at a zoo and my favorite place is in the conservatory. BUT….after seeing sooo many of the plants I have at home…I was walking around and saying, “nope!”. I dont want mine to look like that so I am good LOL! They are growing up poles, going down over railings….across the ground. Some of the leaves are HUGE but just look soooo different. I would recommend that everyone that thinks they want their plants to grow to maturity go visit a conservatory 1st lol

great vid. I am a life long planty but big plants that need moss poles are newish to me, I have a baby Monstera Alba and a baby Tai Constelation. I had a recular Monstera before - it reached 8 ft then I donated it to a local botanical gardens. how the heck do I keep a moss pole hydrated? My big guy just clambered up my wall in England. I an a bit scared by the baby alba and Tai
I’ve just repotted all my monsteras (deliciosa and tai constellation) but the moss dries up soooo quickly. I am not prepared to water them every day but it sounds like there is a risk of root rot if I water sporadically. What would you recommend I do? Desmantle the poll or just stop watering the poll altogether? Can I leave the moss in it?
If u don’t provide moisture to the pole the roots will just dry out & then rot… so no point in doing it just every now and then! Either try and keep them moist or just provide a easier maintenance support instead :)
@@sydneyplantguy Thank you, makes sense! I will try to find the iron bark poles to replace the moss poles with! Is the reason for using iron bark and not any other stick is that it doesn’t rot easily? Can you coat a gum tree branch (with something chemical free or safe for the plant ) to stop it from rotting , do you know?

I love your videos and it's really nice to hear you talk so passionately about all of it ❤☺️
After seeing your amazing plants I really really wanted a moss pole. Just one. I tried Hoya Australis last spring but it was not impressed 🥱 I prefer non-toxic plants so will keep hunting for just the right plant. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, it helps so much 👍
Happy growing :)
This video has been incredibly helpful for me. I just got my first melanochrysm, gloriosum, and Paraisio verde the other day.
Great to hear :) happy growing :)
Haha yes love that!! Definitely something to consider: which plants are worth it for YOU!!! Personal preference :)
agree with all of your advice - although my parents have just added an old school hoya to a pole - I'm excited to see how it goes!
My gosh, this was a good video. You answered questions I didn't know I had. Thank you, Jan!
Yay :) thank you:)
One of the reasons I want a moss pole for my Thai constellations is root security. Insurance against root issues.
Very true!! Love a moss pole as insurance policy:)
Oh sounds incredible! Do you have a picture of it?
@@dragonflyhere actually I don't, but I will take some when I get home next week. I'm more of a watcher than sharer on social media so don't often take photos unless I'm trying to ID something...usually plants!!
Oh i like that idea !!:)
29°C?!? I have 0°C in nz 😱😆 I find my albo being the 'craziest' of all my monsters, when it comes to aerials... Like, she just mad octopus 😂
We had such a crazy warm start to the spring …. And then another cold front :( back down to 8 tonight
@@sydneyplantguy lucky you, where I am (Manawatu), we've had maybe 2 sunny ish days in last 3 weeks, rain, rain and more rain. Not good timing for me on the farm 🤣
@@sydneyplantguy and temperatures are just Rollercoaster, but steadily around 15
We were 30 degrees here already and the next 2 days are 27 degrees. And no rain for 2 weeks 😳
Great looking plants! poles or not!just got my first Peru I may give it a wooden support ,🤞

💚🌿🌵🍀💚
Super informative, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with all of us
Glad it was helpful! :)
Hello Sydney I enjoy all your videos and I do have a hoya kramson princess on a pole that is totally out of control I've been to lazy to repot it I'll get around to it soon happy planting
These posts are NEXT LEVEL.
Thank you . ♥️ GT Maree
Thank you:)
I found this information very helpful! Thanks for your insights!
Thank you so much :)
Also you were curious as to what i was using for my Vanilla Planifolia, i was using dried coconut shells instead of moss or coconut chips as it felt like it wouldnt warp as much as if i was to use coconut chips as the Vanilla orchid is really heavy !
Interesting!! Makes sense :) looked great:)
I spent hours watching your videos without knowing I'm not yet subscribed soooo there I did it! 😅
Hehe thanks :)
Excellent video especially the monstera deliciosa growing outdoors in his natural habitat
Thanks :)
Haha. I feel the same about spiders. Your comment made me laugh so loud at work. Glad it's Friday and not many people in the office. Lol. I don't want spiders to touch me either!
I feel ya! 😂
Thank you for this very informative discussion. I have 2 M.Delicioua. one inside and one by my koi pond out side. Neither are poled.
Be well. 💚
Thank you!! Yes :) any support would do the trick! Tortum is another one i would put on that list actually :)
Thanks great video I have actually taken my Thai con off the moss pole and just got a coir pole now as it is only a support
Thanks for watching :)
Of course, you are absolutely right. Understandably.
Hehe thanks :)
Love your work and you’re funny, too. ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Maybe next year:)
i put a monstera variegata on a moss pole but i'm having a hard time making sure it's always wet, do you recommend i just take out the aerial roots from the moss pole and replace it with a coco pole just for making the plant stable?
A moss pole gives u a security from root rot so not a bad thing at all if you’re willing to keep it moist :)
In the beginning of my moss pole journey inspired by you, I put my Deliciosa on one…. No way I can remove it now and keep the plant whole, so on she stays, she’ll have a 24inch pot extension for her life lol
Absolutely nothing wrong with that :) was just trying to say they don’t NEED one, but if given one, they’ll love it
I wonder if a hoya on a moss pole would allow it to flower more. Ooop inspired! I have wild vines on one of my hoyas. Experiment time!
Great info! Thank you!
Oh for sure !! I have actually made a full video comparing different kind of supports :)
Thank you:)
To mature it u will have to increase light, irrespective of the support:)
When you do chop..do you leave the original base in the pot, or do you cut that up for propagation?
Depends on what i’m planning on doing with it :) either works :)
Excellent video
Really enjoyed watching this vid, (except the spider🤨😱)thanks Jan😊
Hi, love your passion and all you're videos 💚
One question I have is what would you do with a climbing plant that is well established but not mature and does not have a moss pole but I want to put it on one?
Any info would be great, Thanks 🍃🌱
There’s an in-depth video about this coming out soon actually, but in short: propagate it and start it on a pole from the bottom :) don’t fix it on there in hindsight :)
I've NEVER heard of a diascorea! I totally butchered that name, but I think I'm in love!
It’s such a pretty plant!!!
Grreat video. Would love to know where you get your ironbark posts from in Sydney. I have been trying to get a couple for my plants,
Thanks :) bought them on ebay 3 years ago :) i just searched for iron bark :)
You saved my Thai Constellation from a moss pole today! Thank you for this informative vid!
Happy growing :)
This video saves my money!
Great topic. Interesting 😊
Thanks :)
I love me some filler plants. I got a big bushy hanging cebu blue, I love it.
What conditions do you give it? I’ve always struggled with mine.
love the passion! and none of my plants are on polls lol
Is a trellis a decent alternative to moss poles?
Can Verricosum grow on trellis?
I get a deja vu with your Reels 😅 like i’m living in the future😂 but ❤your video’s ✨
😂😂
I'm debating putting my Monstera adansonii on a moss pole (it would be my first), but I seriously doubt whether I can keep up with the care for the moss pole. Decisions, decions...
Nice vid, Jan; very entertaining!
Well, always worth trying out & see how you go :) monsteras are a good one to start off with because they don’t mind drying out a little bit :)
Heya, I have learned to pack the pole dense as and it'll retain water for longer (usually do bottle feed every fortnight)
Best of luck ❤
Get a plastic pole with coco fibers wrapped around it then. You can still spray it and help roots grab it and grow into it a bit, but it's not necessary to do it or keep a schedule about it. I use these instead of moss poles and the leafs of my epipremnum aren't that much smaller.
Thank you that was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful :)
Would you recommend a moss pole for Philodendron Paraiso Verde?
Yes :)
The spider would have done me in 😅
Lol. I've commented "elephant ears" on your shorts for the Glorious, but not referring to Alocasias, just saying the leaves literally look like elephant ears swaying 😂💚💚
Haha fair enough :D
I like to watch pothos grow on the moss pole (3-5 shoots) and without it (20+ shoots together) at the same time :)
Definitely, always nice to have one trailing & one climbing :)
Hehe thank you:)
What kind a soil you use is lovely n giant plants 🪴 love it
My potting mix tutorial is linked in the description :)
I reckon most people won’t have good enough conditions indoors so it’s probably not that big of a concern :)

No way could I take my outside plants inside and I live in the UK😬😬😬 there terrifying, I’d rather give birth again than move that pot with that spider in. Your a brave man Jan
😅😅
I have wondered about dragon fruit (cactus) on moss poles though
Definitely wants a support, but no need for a moss pole :)
Would you add a moss pole or a support pole for a tortum, burle Marx, pedatum, and billitae?
I just flip a bottle upside down!! It’s so easy :) i have a full tutorial about it in my moss pole playlist :)
@@sydneyplantguy thanks! I'll take a look
Or u can just never water the pole and use it just like u would use a coco coir pole but it feels like a waste of moss tbh :)
Would you add a moss pole to variegated borsigiana?
I would:)
