so basically: don't make money just because everybody else does! enjoy life, live on the streets, feed on scraps and wait for a better opportunity :)

This helped more than I thought it would - I always thought the idea of commissions are fun, but when I get to them, they’re exhuasting- I hate being told what to draw, it feels pressuring and often leads to burnout for me. I think selling prints or creating a shop would be fun, because I am able to be independent and draw what I like and create it into physical items.

THANK YOU. I've done about 10 commissions (I'm a painter) and all have gone well, until this one portrait that I'm working on now. I got so offended when the client didn't like my work that it made me upset for days and made me second guess my ability as an artist!!! I'm realizing now that the client is just insecure and she didn't think she looked good in the painting. After this one, I'm done with commissions. I had no idea how much that type of rejection would hurt. Art is my therapy, my happy place. And this commission really ruined that for me (temporarily). It's not worth the stress. Thank you for validating my feelings with this video!!

I agree with you. I don't like commission. I feel like trying to find client for years, even if I get one, I will do the work 2 weeks on average. I consider myself a quick artist-I do 4 pages of sketchbook today.. and I can finish 1 digital artwork in 1 day if i really want. 2 weeks? hell nah. I give up. Also, social media changes drained me, so I stopped. I feel aimless not gonna lie. But as you say, I'm currently living in the moment.

I haven't done comms for actual money yet, just for things like in-game currency or game items. However I still find it to be very stressful, becuase like you explained, I start feeling like it needs to turn out PERFECT, which leads to me just avoiding it all together. I'm also absolutely awful at remembering to add small details, like scars for example. And when I do forget something like that and then send it, only noticing afterwards what I did, I will freak out and then it really kills all my motivation for art and leads to artblock often. So yeah, not a great experience with comms. However, I recently had the idea of just doing cheaper doodles (keep in mind, I only do comms for game items atm,) , and I find that to be much easier as there is less for them to lose if the art turns out to be disappointing, and even then it's very clearly stated to just be a fun little drawing that can vary in quality. Becuase I am ND though, it can still be quite difficult, even with the expectations set so low (I struggle with fulfilling expectations a lot).

i feel the same, been working in animation for a gambling company for 4 years now and honestly i felt like my only other option was commissions and getting company size clients. its not as fun as people make it out to be when you have to rely on other people like a company or individual clients.

I'm too obsessed with making dynamic poses with my characters to learn how to draw others.
That's why I don't do "how to draw" videos of popular characters 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is why i could never have a creative job, it sounds so amazing in theory but i did a graphic design project for money ONCE and it threw my anxiety through the ROOF and slammed the door on creativity.
Not to mention the person behind the job needed the work done so even if money wasnt on the line, now its even worse because i have THAT stress too

Love your art! And I could really relate to hating the pressure of commissions and clients. I love when people are happy with the results, but adding money to it (while necessary for making a living) raises the stakes so much haha. I think getting more confident and proud of my art might help make it feel like it's worth the clients money, but otherwise i stress over making it as perfect as possible 😅
Also, sorry if this is unsolicted advice/an annoying suggestion, but since you're using csp you can record a window without the zooms/pans/rotation-- it might be a stylistic choice to include that part of the art process, but at high speeds it feels very frantic to watch (as a personal opinion)

I'll try to record on a separate window instead on the main canvas for next time I add a speedpaint to a video. 👍👍It's kind of difficult for me though, I only have so many monitors to work with and csp's built in timelapse tool isn't great for longer form videos because of how it records.

I absolutely dont like commissions and never have. I love to draw comics from a good author. I like designing an author’s character, and I like designing the world, storytelling elements, etc… However, I hate doing commissions. There’s something that’s completely different, and art suddenly isn’t fun anymore. 90% of the time I’ve been told to draw something I absolutely don’t feel motivated to. And I just don’t like doing the generic portrait illustrations. I prefer drawing environments.

I may look into subbing my content in the future. I usually try to enunciate clearly when I'm recording so most people would be able to clearly listen, but for this video I did kind of rushed the recording process and ended up sounding a little mumbly in parts. My B! Hopefully in the future I'll take more time to properly record!! :)

it was never about the money for me, i just viewed commissions as a way to measure the quality of myt art. like if someone was wiling to pay for it that had to mean the quality was decent enough right? i never did post any of my stuff though since i never felt it was good enough to do so, then i started seeing people buying ai generated trash and though "maybe the consumers dont know anything about quality after all... maybe comms isnt a good way to measure quality..."

I absolutely can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on storytelling techniques, and your art style is fire! You're very wise in telling people to develop their skills before they get into any monetization of those skills.
