This song is absolutely my favorite VH song. My dad passed when I was a teen and the lyrics are so appropriate for the story of my life. At the end of the song when Sammy belts out “Hey Ray, what you said is true, I can’t stop loving you.” Is so incredible. My dad’s name was Ray and I didn’t know why he added that to the song and told all my friends I’d ask Sammy one day. It ended up coming true and Sammy listened intently to my heart and got goosebumps as we talked. He tole me it is about Ray Charles and his song of the same name.
Eddie is still of the greatest guitarists of all time and is still considered to be one of the greatest minds in music. I love VH, especially the Sammy years. The guitar and drums these brothers played complimented each other so much. Vocally Sam was the superior. Daves stuff launched them and Sam's matured the sound.
I'm really, really glad that VH grew (not evolved) and their music with them. Their DLR phase is like a teenager phase, lots of energy and some stupidity but then you grow and here comes the realization that, after all, love is what makes life worth and here they came with Van-Hagar phase and wonderful lyrics like this one. Still rock, still testosterone and same brilliant performance, just mature. Love it!
