Great job, Vin. You did a great job, I could tell you were reading from a script but it's just because you were a little monotone. Easy to work on, you're very expressive otherwise. Proud of you.
In every major franchise there's at least a dozen pitches for every game that actually releases. Only question is how far they got before being canned.
For some reason I never truly understood just how valuable Rare was to Nintendo. It makes me wonder why they just didn't buy them first :( It makes me really sad to see how much Miyamoto respected and cared ab the Rare games and I bet he was sad to see them go
some of the big devs just left the company even before being bought by MS and Nintendo probably knew RareWare has lost it steams, so they just let them go.

As cool as it is seeing Justin Bailey be referenced in what would have been a modern metroid at the time, I think it would have been cooler if the player character for Tactics was Adam. Had Other M not happened and this game came out instead, we could have even had the final level be some kind of sacrifice mission where we have to move all of our units + Samus to an extraction point while the stage is gradually being destroyed more and more each turn. Kinda like a fire emblem style twist on the Escape Sequences in Metroid
The whole story of Project Valkyrie was kinda heartbreaking - imagine working on a project for THAT long, having it reformed, restarted, and when it finally comes out everyone hates it just because it's not a main-series title.
Blame the marketing. Marketing is the absolute worst aspect of the video game industry. They can't let things stand on their own merit, they can't allow niche games to appeal to a niche market. They just siphon off of creative and original works and demand that a million numbered sequels are made until the IP is milked dry like a dairy cow, and dies. If a game is good, advertising it should be easy. Just shout to the high heavens that the game is great and everyone should play it. Instead, these absolute dirtbags want to coast on an already known name and go to lunch early. It also doesn't help that they mostly advertised the Rocket League ripoff mode back when Rocket League was most popular. Making people think it's just a hasty clone trying to ride off a trend.
I couldn't even tell it was Vinny for the first few seconds, his cadence when reading off of a script is way different compared to his streams. He did a good job though!
Yet another interesting video. And wow! I cannot believe that what me and my childhood friends discussed back then; a Metroid game that's like X-COM Enemy Unknown (the OG, not the new age crap) would've been very interesting and cool to see, was actually discussed with the game studio itself! That's awesome to see. I must also say that I follow a couple of hundred retro-focused channels, but you lot are -very- thorough with things, and I particularly like the depth of your researches when gathering facts and uncovering "rumors". Props for adding text in addition to the narrating. I know there are some deaf retro-fans out there who greatly appreciates that. But yeah, another awesomely done video!

You guys are so next level. The depth of research and just how many video you guys are able to pump out is truly astounding. We live in a very special time where this type of information is readily available to regular people like me
The fact I fangirl screamed when the narrator mentioned, "Justin Bailey", for me anyway that was a great name and Easter egg. Not my game genre but if a Tactics Metroid game occured, I would've loved to watch from the sidelines as my husband played it. That's one of his favorite gaming genres aside from RPG games.
It's a shame we didn't get these games, but Metroid Tactics especially. It would have been different, of course, but the XCOM style of gameplay would have been perfect for the setting. Hell, I reckon it'd be a perfect fit for the Switch. Also, I remember that Axiom Verge had a Justin Bailey "cheat code" that put Trace in a similar swimsuit. Except I think it was yellow, making it kind of a banana hammock. (sans Princess Consuela)
There was another proposed game with the placeholder title Metroid 1.5, I believe meant to take place directly after Prime (so a Gamecube game that never happened), that had a personality shifting insane AI as the primary villain, lots of robot enemies, and humanoid Metroids running around. It's possible some of these ideas were retooled and used for Dread, like the EMMI drones and Samus' Metroid Suit in the endgame.

The only other studio that comes to my mind with the whole Metroid 64 situation is Treasure. I can imagine a experimental Metroid done in the style of Sin and Punishment but then again that would have been a major shift in tone
Wow. Such a surprise and a shame to see just how badly Metroid has performed across the years. Paul Tozour clearly has some immense passion for the franchise and I can hope that he is involved in the (forever upcoming) Prime 4. Amazing research done by everyone involved in the making of this video and the great love for the series is very apparent.
What's interesting is that there was a old (2008) Half Life 2 mod called "Project Valkyrie" that too was a multiplayer FPS game inspired by Metroid. Wonder if there's a connection there that didn't get mentioned.
I think Splatoon may have had something to do with the way Valkyrie was handled, the timing seems appropriate, and having 2 big multiplayer competitive games, both published by Nintendo, both shooters of a sense, and given where we are today with Splatoon, it just seems like Nintendo didn't want their franchises competing in that space. What gives it even more credence is the fact that they shifted it to a co-op based game.
I didn't even notice until more than halfway through the episode that vinny was the one reading the script. It surprises me how natural he sounds for this type of content.
Wouldn't surprise me if the devs that were asked to make Metroid 64 has some connection to Iguana Entertainment & Acclaim Entertainment, the studio & publisher of the Turok games on the N64.
There’s ID software and 3D Realms too, I guess. But I could see Nintendo around that time being more open with the idea of a Quake-styled Metroid game.
I don't press the like button on most videos I watch the way other UA-cam users do. In fact, it's practically once in a blue moon that I hit like on a video. But I had to like this one, both for the great content and to support Vinny.
I’d thought i never see the day that vinny would narrate a DYKG episode but i’m glad he finally made it. He kinda sounded awkward at the start like he’s being told what to read in front of class but became more confident in his narration, awesome job vin!
It’s fascinating to think that franchises that you love and grew up with coul’ve been completely different, if some of these canceled games had actually been made.

So some small chance at some incredible coincidence. If Metroid 64 was pitched to somebody, then it was probably to one of those Dream Team studios. One of the Dream Team studios was Acclaim Entertainment. Acclaim Entertainment published the Iguana Studios Turok games. A good amount of the Turok guys left Acclaim to follow Jeff Spangenberg in a new startup studio of his called Retro Studios. DYKG already talked to quite a few people from Retro, but it would be some incredible fate to find out the proposal back then was to the same guys that ended up making Metroid Prime.
Hey Ultimate, I'm the guy who wrote this video. Every time I talked to a Retro dev over the past couple years (maybe about 10 total), I asked about Metroid 64. No one knew anything unfortunately. John Whitmore who's quoted in this video was the only one who said anything substantial. The quote was cut short because I didn't wanna spend like 2 minutes on kind of a nothing burger, but basically he said Retro wasn't asked to do Metroid 64, and Nintendo of America kept them in the loop on what Rare was up to, and he didn't think it was Rare either. Unfortunately.

Nice seeing you here.
@@doburu4835 Yeah you can tell they lost some of that steam after the 64 era, their games were becoming more hit or miss after that.
They probably tried but price negotiations failed
@@bm001 Well it's because a lot of people left when they were bought, that includes the people that left before the deal as well which didn't help.
Rare was probably the biggest third party dev the N64 had, after all the other big names jumped ship to the PlayStation.
DYGK has been on a roll with bang after bang, uncovering mysteries and lost media. Congrats to all of the DYGK team for making this possible!

Man that's awesome never knew about any of this stuff. Great video man!
The whole story of Project Valkyrie was kinda heartbreaking - imagine working on a project for THAT long, having it reformed, restarted, and when it finally comes out everyone hates it just because it's not a main-series title.
FOR REAL it makes me feel bad for disliking it as a kid 😭
He did a good job though!
can we just appreciate the extremely high level of content dykg has been bringing us? Great work and keep it coming!
Really hoping someone takes you up on the bounty. You really did a crazy amount of research and we appreciate it!
I love hearing binny talking seriously about his favorite game series.
thanks so much for your insane amounts of effort in making and researching this stuff.
Metroid Tactics actually sounded really cool, and it could have been repurposed for the 3DS pretty well I think. A shame it never came to pass
It could work now on switch since every Nintendo IP has a tactics game now smh idk why they wouldn’t
I WANT METROID TACTICS! God... Had I known this was something for consideration, I would have begged for it harder. Sounds so damn cool!
Damn Vinny, you did good!
The coverage on this video was awesome stuff dykg!
You sound great Vinny! It's your first time, and you get better throughout the video, and none of it's bad! Great job!

I was planning on watching DYKG and Vinny anyway, you just saved my time by combining the two
Thank you DidYouKnowGaming for once again giving Metroid some time in the spotlight!
Some pretty incredible journalism went into making this video, huge props to the team that made this
What a bizarre coincidence for Vinny to narrate a DYKG video on Metroid!
DYKG asked on Twitter for recommendations on content creators who would be a good fit for a Metroid video, and a lot of people recommended Vinny
Right? It's Binny's favorite game, after all
I have a better idea how about we all get together and never play Metroid games and get rid of all of them because they're all dumb
@@Training_Wheels this is certainly an additive comment to the topic being discussed
You guys do such a great Job! Love it!
(sans Princess Consuela)
imagine Tactics but no Mario + Rabbids today
DYKG and Supper Mario Broth always amaze with the crazy niche things you learn and can share with us. Love y'all so much!
Vinny when episode with sonic facts: "I sleep"
Vinny when episode with pepe sylvia level of digging for cancelled metroid games: "real shit?!"
Impressive how this channel has evolved from random game trivia to full-on journalism.

12:26 wow, that is an insane chart
I was not ready to hear Vinny with a script
hey bro
@@IanTho1 you weren't ready either
@@gatst7680 nobody was
This was brilliant! Thank you for making this.
He's so professional 😭
12:29 Well that's one way of ruining my entire week with a soul crushing piece of info
The only other studio that comes to my mind with the whole Metroid 64 situation is Treasure. I can imagine a experimental Metroid done in the style of Sin and Punishment but then again that would have been a major shift in tone
Intelligent Systems, maybe?
Can't believe they got News celebrity Vinny Vinesauce to host an episode of DYKG
It's crazy how much work and love go into these videos
What's interesting is that there was a old (2008) Half Life 2 mod called "Project Valkyrie" that too was a multiplayer FPS game inspired by Metroid. Wonder if there's a connection there that didn't get mentioned.
A Metroid XCOM game that makes Justin Bailey canon would have been awesome now that I think about it.
I don't care what others think
Naming that commander justin bailey is a brilliant idea

@@DJIVision Ah. Well damn. Thanks for the informed comment though. Good luck with the search!

Those were Blizzard/Warcraft Ability buttons from that Metoid Tactics screenshot at 5:18
A Metroid Tactics would be great on switch
I wasn’t sure how much I’d enjoy the longer form content when you guys did the switch, but after all this time now I can confidently say you guys made the right move doing long form videos! I watch em all the way through as soon as I can and all the digging you guys do is amazing so just incredible stuff team DYKG!!! Keep it up! 😁😁😁 I’m not one for Tactics games usually, but man, I’d be trying everything to get my hands on a Metroid tactics game if it existed
Today I learned:
How Xcom works
Justin Bailey is basically canon
There WERE plans for Metroid 64
How cool Metroid Tactics would be
How cool Valkyrie would be
I would be interested in that Heroes of Hyrule game
How interesting it is that Valkyrie became Federation Force
Metroid 64 could've been 2D!
Miyamoto was definitely supportive of M64
They didn't know what to do for story, until Prime and Fusion
Vinny is quickly globetrotting his online presence and it's cool
"You're out, I'm in. The people want more Vin."
We did get more Vin and I highly approve of him to talk about more stuff on DYKG.
5:20 I like how the icons they used in this are WoW ability icons
Oh man... _'Metroid: Tactics'_ would have been something I would have been all over...
He got from Did You Know Vinesauce about Sponge to the real thing! Now we need for him to narrate a Tomodachi life episode here too
It took me 12 and a half minutes of listening to this to have a sudden realization, and look down at the title to confirm that it was indeed Vinny narrating this episode.
It really is neat how many different UA-camrs get involved with this channel.
So weird hearing Vinny in a video like this.
New subscriber here. I heard about your old zelda tactics video getting pulled. That sucks but it made me aware of your channel.
Thanks man (I'm the guy from DYKG who wrote both videos)
Never thought I’d see Binyot on a DYKG video
