While not a traditional enemy, there's one antagonistic force that you deal with throughout DK64 that sticks out, and you only need 2 words to bring him to mind. "GET OUT!"
"Be more like the race car." Best advice I have ever gotten. I'll be sure to pass it down to my children and my children's children so future generations can be more like the race car.
I feel like I would have been terrified of those tomatoes as a kid, genuinely creepy faces. Speaking of I was terrified of that beaver in Click Clock Wood from Banjo Kazooie. Due to the way things load in, from a distance all I saw was a pair of angry eyes looking at me in the lake.
Red Klaptraps appeared in the cutscene upon entering Gloomy Galleon, I wonder how different they would be from the green and purple ones. Red would have to mean that they're deadlier than the first two. Let's brainstorm for potential future DK64 ROM Hacks here! 💪
@@timtheenchanter55Really? You sparked my curiosity. I guess they're a beta enemy? Possibly unfinished, but still cool to know. I would imagine that they'd be even tougher than the purple ones.
I honestly love the cast of enemies in this game. Some are expected while others are just weird obscure things that you would never expect to see in a DK game. This game definitely wouldn’t be complete without them. My favorite is probably the Kasplats. Not only are they tough to take out, but they’re so goofy too. Lol
I was absolutely terrified of the tomatoes as a kid cause they only existed in one room of Fungi Forest I think? If you try to lead them out of the room (since you can't rlly kill them otherwise) they just become this terrifying wall of tomatoes that want to kill you. I never beat this game.
It’s such a pity that we can’t even beat up the worst enemy in the game. That F***ing beetle. I know you can hit her at the beginning of Tiny’s race, but that’s not enough. At least with the rabbit we can get some revenge in Crystal Caves and let him blow up. We need a mod that replaces the flies in Big Bug Bash with the Beetle.
The klaptrap teeth freaked me out so much as a kid, I would always avoid klaptrap like the plague or use an instrument as an emergency kill The still creep me out, ugh
You forgot about the Frozen Tomato in Crystal Caves that challenges you to a flip-a-tile game. He gets so mad after losing that he never wants to play with Lanky again 😢
I absolutely love to bait enemies and wait until they're _just_ about to attack me, then play my instrument. Bonus points if it's Diddy's badass Guitar Gazump!
As for the starfish, I love these enemies! They are truly one of my favorite and a have a great design! What I don’t like is the fact that those are the ONLY enemies in the game that cannot die! No matter how hard you try. So I’m not gonna lie, I get a little anxiety from being in Donkeys and Tinys five door ships with the amount of starfish that swim close to your face as you trying to do your tasks.
I've always liked how whenever a Kasplat is in the area, you can occasionally hear them muttering "splat". It's such a creepy-cool atmospheric touch that lets you know that something important is around, even if you can't see it.
Love this too! I talk about it more in my video about the music and sound in this game. Love the way they smash the ground, that's another great way to inform the player they're nearby
The donkey Kong series does have some unique enemies throughout the series and DK64 has some of the most unique ones especially when it came to the kremlins. Shade cool like kremlins kaspluts, mecha kremlins, skull kremlins, viking like kremlins koshas, kremlins dressed like ghosts, so many nice kremlin foes. I definitely like them the most.
To tell you truth, the worst enemy in my opinion is something that we mention sometimes. The only enemy where the only thing to beat it is to turn it's curse into our strength. 💪 The Camera 📷
After replaying the DKC games recently, it's interesting to see how some of these enemies were adapted to 3D with varying results. In those games, standard enemies like Gnawty's, Kritter's, or even Klump's were used as modular tools that the player incorporated into their movement. If you know how, every enemy is placed in a way that chain jumps and skips throughout a level. This was further expanded in the DKC Return games, where, with strategic timing, you can utilize enemies creatively to get a faster time. When translating them to 3D, though, they're more of a setpiece than anything else. The worlds are open and non-linear, so there's no need to use them for platforming. And Kong's move set isn't flexible enough to use them in creative ways The Zingers were also a major threat in the originals, acting as nearly invincible hazards in barrel blast or swinging sections. But in DK 64, they're just a nuisance; you must stop, aim, and shoot at them to take them down. Adding a new axis didn't give the devs any new ideas for using them; they said, "Eh, they just fly now." In the early days of 3D platforming, developers didn't quite understand how to properly implement enemies in their games. Even gems like Mario 64 are lauded for their flexible movement, but the enemies always fell short. It wasn't until games like Mario Odyssey or Astro Bot that we started to see the unique marriage of enemies as modular tools and flexible movement. DK 64 was a transitional era for 3D platformers in terms of design. But I have to admit that despite its primitive design, the game still holds up because of its charm. The enemies in this game ooze variety, animation, and SFX.
I always wondered if some of the enemies in this game were scraped ideas from Banjo-Kazooie, because some like the Flames, the Tomatoes, The Toy Blocks feel more at home in that game.
I feel like the wave explosion thing that uses coconut crystals is accessible way too early. Trivialises ALL enemies except bosses. I basically never use oranges again except for some rooms in Crystal Caves.
New subscriber and viewer! Just want to say I've been trying to find DK64 content for a while now. Then I find your channel that is literally all DK64. Just want to say thank you for what you do, please continue. Love your channel and will be recommending to everyone I know. Cheers mate 👍
I would honestly love to see more variation on the Kremlings, since they were meant to be the main baddies of this game and the previous ones as well. Different Krocs for different jobs would always be an interesting thing to see, kinda like the Kops from the Stealthy Snoop levels. The Klubbas in minecarts are nice to see during Diddy and Chunky's minecart levels plus the design for Krusha being brought back from the first Donkey Kong Country was a nice treat to see for the Multiplayer mode.
although not really an enemy and more like an obstacle, i've always hated the clams in Gloomy Galleon, when i was little. their red eyes and smirks and the fact you have to go inside them always made me feel uneasy and so i always dreaded to go get those pearls. back then i thought that if i was in their mouth as they closed it i would've got a game over.
As a kid i didn't noticed that almost everyone is a piece of... grumpy. For example: Ice king Tomato (or whatever is called). He loses and say "You are not my friend anymore". Such a drama king 😂. Hope he is still friends with the kongs.
I'm with you about those flame enemies, at first I thought they were original enemies from the DK64 randomizer since they're pretty prominently shown there, so I thought: oh, they made a cute fireball enemy for the randomizer, neat, but to my surprise they were ACTUAL real enemies lmao, who would've thought, and that rabbit is so infuriating when he runs backwards mocking you omg, I really don't like that guy so clearly he's villain material.
Imagine an enemy called, Kopy he would be a copy one of the kongs based off of what he wars and you'd have to fight him while he uses the kong's special abilities.
The race car always reminds me of the RC car from Toy Story, you race one a couple of times in the Toy Story 2 game too. Also funny coincidence when you where describing the cop enemies, I randomly started thinking of the Moblins from Wind Waker until you brought them up shortly after lol.
That Beetle is the most evil enemy in the game, I like to think she's the one who told K.Rool where DK Isle was. The Rabbit at least thanks you for saving him.
an untouchable and unbeatable enemy at times that you forgot to mention; the goddamm camera. When the camera is stationary and unadjustable in the most "god i need to rotate the camera" times at perilous platforming sections of the game
I always hated the tomatoes, too often would I try to krush them only to be slightly off and take damage instead. I also hated the orange barrel Kremlings. I would have to say that my favorite enemies are the regular Kremlings. Their cool vests and the comedic cutscenes that they're often involved in.

Shoutout to the enemies! Without them, there is no game 🐊
Except For The Beetle & The Rabbit!
We Don't Have Enough TNT Barrels In This World For These 2 Bisquits!
The Klumps eating their own lime grenades then belching smoke will always be the funniest idle animation for an enemy in a game.
