    Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021.
    Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platformer fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-play across all platforms. It also has some of the most satisfying combo mechanics of any fighting game I've played, because doing successful low damage to kill combos is extremely hard. You have to either 100% know where your opponent is going or just make up some wacky play and hope for the best. It makes the kills all the more exciting. Brawlhalla has reached OVER 1 million in esports prize pools this year and over 50 million online players in total.
    Soulcalibur (ソウルキャリバー, Sōrukyaribā) is a weapon-based fighting game franchise developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. There are total of seven main installments and various media spin-offs, including music albums and a series of manga books in the Soulcalibur series. The first game in the series, Soul Edge (or Soul Blade outside Japan), was released as an arcade game in 1995 and was later ported to consoles; the widespread success of its second main installment Soulcalibur in 1998 led to Soulcalibur becoming the name of the franchise, with all subsequent installments also using the name onwards. More recent games in the series have been released for consoles only and have evolved to include online playing modes.
    BlazBlue is a fighting video game series developed and published in Japan by Arc System Works and later localized in North America by Aksys Games and in Europe by Zen United. An anime adaptation aired in autumn 2013. The game series has sold 1.7 million games in August 2012.

    While “oversized weapon user” is certainly precise in its description, it’s a little wordy. A more brief and apt descriptor would simply be, “UNI character.” For example, “Whoa, that’s a big halberd. I’m getting some serious UNI character vibes.” Hope this helps!

    ABA has been one of my fav fighting game characters ever since Accent Core. Few things are more satisfying than activate her install (Either Moroha or Jealous mode) and then becoming the main reason of your opponent’s nightmares❤

And she’s not the same size, hunger literally adds an extra head of height to her character sheets, in a game where they draw every frame it’s really easy to check the early art and see that!     KI’s tusk is one of the more interesting examples of the big weapon character, he has the same weaknesses of other big weapon characters but he also has a mechanic that counters sloppy punishes,
    When he swings his sword he will flash white for a split second and if the opponent attempts to hit tusk during the flash they will be opened up, it forces the opponent to respect the sword and also forces them to punish tusk at the end of a block string the same way everyone else is normally punished, it also doesn’t make it impossible to hit him on start up but it adds risk to it

    Immidiatly thought of kagura from bb when you explained the archetype and was excited when he showed up at the end. Having to quickly slide into a stance then into a huge sword swing perfectly emulated the weight, momentum, and finesse of a normal sized person with a huge weapon.

    i love colossus in yomi hustle, the guy with a sword 3x his size that's so strong he can launch the opponent into space with one swing and create earthquakes just by dropping it

    Pshhh May isn’t an archetype. She’s just rushdown lol. Her frame data doesn’t even reflect such a huge wep. Now ABA she’s a refreshing archetype. Non-big character…BUT hampered movement & needs to install to unlock its true power. More like character traits or characteristics…not archetype. And both of them have great back dashes…

    I might be nitpicking but I wish they made Ruby's scythe bigger since her trailer made an emphasis on how massive it is compared to her.
    (Even though that would make her even more crazy op.)
    At least Es' body to weapon ratio would be fine.
    Although on second thought, that may be because she swings and moves too fast. Her scythe looks pretty big when you look at her sprites.

    Of this archetype, Fiona from Arcana Heart is most memorable to me. This is a little girl with a big HEAVY sword. But the emphasis is no longer on size, but on weight of the sword. The consequence of this is that the moves are slow and with great inertia, and after some attacks Fiona falls to the ground with the sword. But all this is offset by the fact that most of the moves have hyperarmor, and this is visually explained not by the fact that Fiona is strong and withstands attacks, but by the fact that the sword is awesome heavy, and if you swing it, it will fall by inertia, even if Fiona has received damage.

    In the same vein, unexpectedly acrobatic large body characters. They are kinda rare, off the top of my head I can only think of Tekken's Bob right now, but there's something inherently fun about tossing around someone with that kind of momentum.

    I think Amaterasu in MVC3 could be considered as a part of the oversized weapon characters, even if calling her stance character makes more sense. The fact she has the option to choose from a shield, the big sword, and the chain of beads is really cool imo.

    I believe the reason there isn't a specific name for this archetype is that... Well, this isn't exactly an archetype, more of a property you can add to an archetype, kind of like "big body". You can have a large weapon zoner, or a large weapon rushdown, for example. The large weapon isn't necessarily the central point of the playstyle, more like a twist on how you go about your main archetype's goals.
    That said, I fully agree we need more little people with comically large weapons

    This is my favorite kind of chericture I play Mako/Arcadia in brawl ABA/May in guilty gear also the only chericture I play in blaze blue is Es so self explanatory. And I know its not a fighting game but in Hades II I use the axe. We need more characters like this. also a new great sword legond in brawlhalla I dont care what wepon they have as long as they have great sword.

    Marcus from shadow fight series (3 and 4) are soo slow, soo eazy to punish, but in his second stage, the glitch stage, he can do a really quick charge attack that even a forward rolling cant punish !
    I think its a really cool concept of big weapon archetype, a big guy with big sword that trapped in time paradox and have deadly glitch power
    Im forget to mention that he also has a armor during his shadow ability🫠, only 2 character that has shadow armor in shadow fight 4 arena, his 2 shadow move are also so intimidating tho🫠

    These are just mid range chars with big normals. Weapons can be used in a variety of different designs, and their gameplay varies wildly.
    I think an archetype need a sharper definition, with more focus on the proper gameplay and less in the external aesthetics, to stand up by itself.

    Garland in the FF Dissidia Games uses and oversize all-in-one-Axehammer-dule-converted-grate sowrds, that can be swong with a chian. In Dissidia NT he starts off slow but the more he lands his attacks the stronger and faster he becomes.
    That and the Character Snow in Dissidia NT. Has a super coruption arm that has a pretty fast start up on some of his normals, That and "Impact drive" Is a fast devestating super to use.

    Not quite the same archetype, but swordies in smash bros poisoned my liking of weapon chars cuz they have barely more whiff recovery (aka endlag), still have stupid good frame data, good mobility, sometimes good recovery, only weakness is throws usually
    But these chars can be kinda funny

    I don’t think there’s necessarily a character in this specific archetype there, but I’d love to see discussion of Idol Showdown; outside the Hololive love, the roguelike single player mode is especially engaging, and a great variety of fighters

    I don't think this really counts as an "archetype," by FGC terms, anyway. It's more just a character design. That being said, yeah, it's the best. The main character in the fighting game I'm making has a bigass sword. I wanted to make an easy-to-learn character who is balanced between zoning and rushdown capabilities without being just another shoto

    As a faithful practitioner of brawlers (Slayer across all Guilty Gears, Enkidu, Soriz, etc) characters like Kliff are often my worst matchups lmao I did play a lot of Ramlethal in Strive, love my girl, but it's hard to dash punch in on characters with such big, active moves. Kliff is the bane of my +R existence right now. Love to hate and hate to love that little oji-san.

    what i dont like about typhoons vids is he brings up Brawlhalla in the traditional fighting games when discussing things in his videos but then he barely if ever brings up Smash bros if Brawlhalla counts for these vids smash should too right? but then if smash doesn't count for these videos then Brawlhalla shouldn't count either ( TLDR: I want typhoonbh to also talk about super smash bros)

      I do talk bring up smash sometimes, I just have more familiarity with brawlhalla (a large part of my original audience) so it's easier for me to make connections when writing. It's something I do subconsciously and not on purpose, but I do include smash sometimes.

    isn't "big weapon" more of an aesthetic or fantasy rather than a particular gameplay style or archetype? whats to stop devs from making a big weapon user a rushdown, a grappler, a bully, or a zoner? Theres not really any sort of traditional defined guideline for the "big weapon archetype" is there? tho it would be cool to see future games take on the challenge to more strongly define that archetype, but uhh this sort of concept doesn't really exist in more traditional barehanded fighting games that are more about martial arts...
    When i think of Archetypes i think of gameplay loops that fighters generally share, but thats not true for Big Weapon users.
    Take DNF Duel: Crusader wields a giant hammer, Inquisitor wields a giant axe, and Vanguard wields a huge lance, but none of them play the same. Vanguard might as well be a zoner with his insane range and relies on block strings. Crusader slams u from a distance then quickly closes in on you while putting walls up to make sure u stay in his range. Inquisitor covers the screen with a giant wheel of death.

    Why not call them "Giant Weapon Users"? It's catchy and rolls off the tongue better than "Oversized Weapon Users".

      Which archetype is based around blocking? The game still has defensive mechanics I don’t see why you can’t categorize characters (I assume you’re talking about brawlhalla)

      @@typhoonbh tbf GGST doesn't really have a good example of a character without a good mash tool maybe except for Pot. GL and ABA has god-like 2ps, May has 5p and nago has 2k.
