I'm pretty sure the reason they called him "Black Poulnareff" is because Japan has a different view of the word "black". They don't mean it in terms of race when they titled this fighter, I think it's because they needed to use a word for "evil" or "dark", and that's what they came to. I'm pretty sure this quirk is prevalent in a few other translations of media too
I wonder if that's why the invader spirits in the Dark Souls games are pretty much always called "Black Phantoms" even though they're red in every game.
@@notlunalust Iirc the main antagonists (the Black Arms) are often referred to as 'the black aliens/creatures'. No real controversy since any racial connotations were obviously unintentional, but it can be a bit, well, awkward out of context.
So, when Polnareff, a guy with an _active_ stand, gets possessed by a stand bound to a _weapon,_ he becomes a _passive_ stand user. Got it. Sure. Makes sense, Capcom.
It’s weird how forgotten is Anubis, despite being the Oldest stand in the main story, being incredibly unique with the fact it’s an intelligent Mind controlling sword, and most importantly, it given us an excuse to see Jotaro fight Polnareff, and yet Anubis didn’t get any special love other than the 3 playable characters in HFTF
Your videos are pretty sweet man, I hope you can get some more views rolling in considering all the effort you likely put into making content like this.
As someone black (ethnicity-wise) I can say that localization of Black Polnareff is NOT race-related. Black refers to the tainting of the soul (blackening of the soul) in relation to yin and yang, where white (the color, not ethnicity-wise) and black (the color) symbolize good and evil. It's common to make kuro (black in Japanese, romanized, as in the color...) variants of characters. While Evil Ryu is the name of that form of Ryu, it's not uncommon to hear someone call him Kuro Ryu in Japanese. Also... Tan ≠ Black. What am I waffling about anyways...
Yeah it's a kind of cultural insensitivity in the reverse. Where dudes want to act like the Japanese devs were being racist when it probably wasn't even remotely on their minds, and it's something fairly normal in their culture that ain't race related.
I can't find any examples of him anyone calling him Kuro Ryu. Kuroi Ryu or Koku Ryu would be more correct Most of the results I do find it is just describing the dark aura around him or talking about regular Ryu in a black Gi
While i appreciate them recognizing Chaka's existence, the fact that they gave us sword fighting barber instead of other well known characters (we were THIS close to have N'Doul in the base game) will never not be funny
Pretty late to this video, and I'm working off my Chinese knowledge rather than Japanese. But my guess on why possessed Polnareff is called Black Polnareff could be due to the trope known as '黑化' (literal translation being 'turned/changed to black') in Chinese. Basically, an original good character who turned evil. I'm not sure if it's a Chinese translation of a Japanese word, or a Chinese trope that happens to have connection with Japanese trope. But using the color of black as a narrative shorthand for someone who become evil or possessed by demon is a common enough trope.
Funny thing is the only mention of Anubis in ASBR is the Anubis power up for the all star challenge mode, which increases your attack damage and features Kahn. No chaka no Anubis Pol, just Kahn. Maybe you can count that pol has the spinning sword move and he does the same pose as Anubis Pol.
Characters that would be better in HFTF instead of Khan -Jacket Dio (if he was finished) -N’Doul (as an actual player) -Cesar (look we have young Joseph) -Lisa Lisa (again) -J. Geil proper (it’d be nice I guess) -ZZ (wheel of fortune) (reaching far here) -Enya -The fucking D’Arby brothers -Anyone THAT ISN’T KHAN
It will always be funny to me that Khan is a playable character in this game while the blind guy who controls water, and already has sprites in the game, is not.
One potential reason for making Khan his own character could be that, since he and Chaka together are a reference to the singer "Chaka Khan", the dev team might've felt weird including one but not the other. Plus, both of them have basically the same amount of plot relevance in the manga, as just 2 regular guys puppeted by Anubis who get defeated after 1 chapter. They're kind of interchangeable with each other as wielders of Anubis and neither is really given more plot significance than the other. Granted, having 2 different wielders of Anubis (on top of Possessed Pol) does still feel weird, especially since one has a completely unique moveset, but I kind of understand the reasoning I guess.
@@rordongamsay8478 that's because we probably have similar interests (or at least yt thinks that) so we get similar recommendations, and I comment often

Alright, I hate to do this, but you're kinda wrong about Chaka's stand off mode. In fact Chaka is far BETTER in stand off than in stand on because he requires everything of stand off to make stand on work in the first place. He might have more tools and better combos in stand on, but they're mostly combo oriented. Stand off Chaka is the neutral that you play to get to stand on damage. j.C and j.B are basically the Blues Brothers with how they just work in neutral and don't ever stop working. One of the best air to airs in the game if not the best, and a jump in that hits deeper than it should allowing for a confirm into literally whatever he would want. 5A is better than s.5A due to how much of a lower commitment it is, and how by sheer size alone bullies out common pokes and empty hops. 2B is one of the few slides in the game, and I'm pretty sure it's the only GOOD one, and kara cancelling into 236S is just the freest anti-approach tool Chaka has. You wanna jump in neutral? You wanna dashing poke? You wanna start advancing forward a bit? Sorry, I just did this, get back to out of range. 2C is a good antiair and combos better than s5b antiair, but I won't die on the hill that it's better so it's a give or take. 236S as I already stated is the juicer of a move as it is. Techroll cancelling into this button just denies any sort of followup pressure your opponent is foolish enough to commit to, and the move itself defines where Chaka is supposed to be on the screen. 5B/66B is a great low and whiff punishing tool that you use for your custom combo and UB reset confirms, and you don't get the same kind of lows in stand on. But everything pales in comparison for how poorly everyone treats 2A, quite literally a top 5, quite possibly top 3 move in his kit. Works at close range, works at oki, works at mixups, works even in UB resets, this move is active and non-commital in the slightest. 1 frame recovery if walk cancelled, and that just means not holding down during recovery. Now, stand on is certainly where he gets his damage, but you have to play through stand off to get in to play in stand on. Your jump in of choice is s.j.C, but you gotta start from stand off to hyper hop to make it effective from anywhere further than 1 character length away. s.5B launcher makes Chaka viable in more ways than one, but the optimal ways to find your way into a safe position into this move is through stand off mobility or stand off plinks (2A meaty, use plus frames to S+5A). But the funny thing is that you need to be in stand off in order to now capitalize off Chaka's best advantage state after untechable launch. You need to do quick stand off in order to abuse mobility to unlock the 4 way oki that he does in fact get off the 5 hit launch oki. Other than those 2 buttons, one of which is already a combo tool, the only other buttons you should be pressing in stand on in neutral, which is what Chaka does best, is d.s.5B for antiairs and d.s.2C as a block check. But they're not counterpressure tools, not stuff you can do when your opponent is in your face, which will be happening against a lot of characters in this game. Guard cancel is the perfect example of this, where Chaka gets nothing off his stand on GC other than telling his opponent to back off, stand off GC sends them to hell with a full combo punish that can lead to stand crash combos and UB resets. So in short, his stand off mode is better because instead of just allowing him to play the game, it allows him to play AGAINST other better characters.
My theory on Khan is that he was meant to be in the original game, but mid-way through development they decided Chaka would make a better representative for Anubis and binned Khan Not wanting to let what little they’ve done with Khan go to waste, they would re-implement him into the later version.
I hope u havent gotten too many comments about this and I hope you don't mind the correction, but echelon is pronounced "ESH-uh-lon", not "ECK-a-lon". When people mispronounce words like that, it means they learned it through reading it. I hope this doesn't come off as rude or annoying
Take my words with a grain of salt, as I'm no pro. But to my understanding, wakeup in HFTF is extremely vulnerable- you can only block, there's no reversals or wakeup rolls. Some characters have a 30+ frame getup, too. Doesn't help matters that most relevant characters can set up Stand Rushes (think Aegis Reflector but with a seperate character instead of a wall of energy) and roll/jump over the enemy for extremely easy unblockables, and in a game as explosive as HFTF, it's certainly not uncommon for a single knockdown at high hp to mean a round's loss
On getting knocked down there's 1 inactionable frame where you can only block. That makes meaties a very strong oki option, as there's no risk of breaking pressure. Couple that with the fact that the majority of the cast has an entity that can attack separately from them and you get oki that is good with most characters and absolutely disgusting with about a third. These characters get access to safe, easy to set up, unreactable 50/50s, trap you in a vortex or straight up have unblockables. All of these characters can knock you back down and get another oki and/or get half your healthbar off of it.

TEQ Yajirobe's OST playing over the Heli-khan-ter is hilarious.
I'm pretty sure the reason they called him "Black Poulnareff" is because Japan has a different view of the word "black". They don't mean it in terms of race when they titled this fighter, I think it's because they needed to use a word for "evil" or "dark", and that's what they came to. I'm pretty sure this quirk is prevalent in a few other translations of media too
Shadow the Hedgehog is a notably awkward example.
Goku Black is probably the most recent example to come to mind for me
@@wolfgangervin2582 how so? Do you mean the contents in the game rather than the character itself?
Realizing now that ASBR has no Anubis characters and I'm kind of upset about it
It’s weird how forgotten is Anubis, despite being the Oldest stand in the main story, being incredibly unique with the fact it’s an intelligent Mind controlling sword, and most importantly, it given us an excuse to see Jotaro fight Polnareff, and yet Anubis didn’t get any special love other than the 3 playable characters in HFTF
@@j.j.hector735To this day Anubis is still paying for taking a third spot for khan
What am I waffling about anyways...
most times in the west "Black" used that way is localized as "Dark", like with Dark Pit, to try to avoid the accidental race connotations.
@@jeremyabbott4537 NOW, IRONICALLY, I MAKE MORE SKIN JOKES ABOUT DARK PIT RATHER THAN "BLACK PIT" LMAO
Yeah it's a kind of cultural insensitivity in the reverse. Where dudes want to act like the Japanese devs were being racist when it probably wasn't even remotely on their minds, and it's something fairly normal in their culture that ain't race related.
@@trustytrest Cultural oversensitivity. Sometimes I thank God for my 'tism.
I can't find any examples of him anyone calling him Kuro Ryu. Kuroi Ryu or Koku Ryu would be more correct
Most of the results I do find it is just describing the dark aura around him or talking about regular Ryu in a black Gi
Dunno if this was intentional but that transition at 11:28 was smooth

I loved this video, The narration is drip smooth. Much apreciated. I downloaded all three of MrMixtapes jojo videos.
love him or hate him if nothing works against Kakyoin the last resort is always B Pol
17:36 MY NAME ANUBIS, AND I LIKE TO _SPEEEENN_

Only added these characters so they can say Chaka Khan
Of course the Alessi Mode version of a random reference is another even more random reference
I really hope that if they make a new 2D JoJo fighting game in the future, they pick Khan as the sole Anubis representative.
He is my favorite character in any fighting game, I should really try a SamSho game at some point to see if any of the characters feel like him
Funny thing is the only mention of Anubis in ASBR is the Anubis power up for the all star challenge mode, which increases your attack damage and features Kahn. No chaka no Anubis Pol, just Kahn. Maybe you can count that pol has the spinning sword move and he does the same pose as Anubis Pol.
Characters that would be better in HFTF instead of Khan
-Jacket Dio (if he was finished)
-N’Doul (as an actual player)
-Cesar (look we have young Joseph)
-Lisa Lisa (again)
-J. Geil proper (it’d be nice I guess)
-ZZ (wheel of fortune) (reaching far here)
-Enya
-The fucking D’Arby brothers
-Anyone THAT ISN’T KHAN
-Another Khan
-Black khan
Not possessed khan
BABY KHAN
Shao Khan
I remember Chaka being my first HFTF character that I played because his sword fight look so cool.
Khan is such an anomaly that i had to play him when i saw him. Spinny funny is also just sublime
It will always be funny to me that Khan is a playable character in this game while the blind guy who controls water, and already has sprites in the game, is not.

HE TURNED INTO A COW WHATT?? 😂😂😂
it's a reference to the cow the blade of Anubis ended up in after being broken.
I love your vids man, keep up the good shit 🧡
I'll also remember Khan because he shares a VA with Goro Majima lol

He doesn't use the Golden Ratio he uses the Bronze Comparison.
anubis polnareff is the holy grail for C ranks in fightcade, just do his 1 easy combo and since he gain bar so fast, pull of the super when they approach you

I always liked playing Chaka and Khan. I wish Khan wasn't garbage because he's fun to play - ZETTAI NI MAKENAI!!!

@The_PolterGhost is it? Pretty sure I b stopped reading before his part when i was a young lad.
If you count Rubber Soul as another Kakyoin clone, yeah.
Why is he here? He lost.
My theory on Khan is that he was meant to be in the original game, but mid-way through development they decided Chaka would make a better representative for Anubis and binned Khan
Not wanting to let what little they’ve done with Khan go to waste, they would re-implement him into the later version.

Devo analysis when?
It is rely dumb they don't add Devo or Car Girl to ASBR
Ah yes Racism Polnareff.
what's so fucked up about the oki in this game?
Thanks so much, it's been awhile since I read about the system mechanics and I don't play many other fighting games@@nmzp111
