This video talks about various taunts in fighting games.
Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platformer fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-play across all platforms. It also has some of the most satisfying combo mechanics of any fighting game I've played, because doing successful low damage to kill combos is extremely hard. You have to either 100% know where your opponent is going or just make up some wacky play and hope for the best. It makes the kills all the more exciting. Brawlhalla has reached OVER 1 million in esports prize pools this year and over 50 million online players in total.
Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021. The cross-platform play was only supported between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions at launch. Cross-play with the Windows version is set to be added as an update alongside Season Pass 2. Ver. 1.05 added Korean voices, marking the 3rd game in the franchise to have a Korean dub, alongside Guilty Gear X Plus and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload.
Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2016. Similar to the previous games in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter V features a side-scrolling fighting gameplay system. The game also introduces the "V-Gauge", which builds as the player receives attacks and adds three new skills. The game features 16 characters at launch, with four of them being new to the series. A story mode and 30 additional characters were added through updates and downloadable content.
BlazBlue is a fighting video game series developed and published in Japan by Arc System Works and later localized in North America by Aksys Games and in Europe by Zen United.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX, Great Fray Smash Brothers X), often shortened to "SSBB" or "Brawl" (スマブラX), is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series published by Nintendo. The game was designed by Masahiro Sakurai, who also created the two preceding Super Smash Bros. games, and was developed by an ad hoc development team consisting of Sora, Game Arts, and staff from other developers, beginning in October 2005. The game was released on January 31st, 2008 in Japan, March 9th, 2008 in North America, June 26th, 2008 in Australia, and June 27th, 2008 in Europe. Up to four players can engage in local multiplayer battles at any given time with any combination of controllers, while Brawl also supported online play through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the first game in the series to do so. While Brawl continues to include the tournament-like "Classic" and "All-Star" single-player modes, Melee’s Adventure Mode has been replaced with The Subspace Emissary; a much more extensive side-scrolling beat-'em-up mode featuring both the playable characters and many enemies specifically created for the game.
Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game developed by Reverge Labs and published by Autumn Games. In Skullgirls, players fight each other with teams of one, two, or three characters, attempting to knock out their opponents or have the most cumulative health when time runs out. The setting of the game revolves around the "Skull Heart", an artifact which grants wishes for women. If a wisher with an impure soul uses the Skull Heart, she is transformed into a monster known as the "Skullgirl". The game was first released through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in April 2012, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the animation and gameplay mechanics, while criticizing its initial roster size and online multiplayer features.

There's a universal mechanic in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle that if you taunt as your opponent is getting knocked down, they lose meter. This is to emulate the fact that canon fights in Jojo are about guile and mettle as much as they are about physical strength. The character Joseph Joestar has a unique counter to that mechanic. If you predict your opponent is going to taunt, you can taunt back, and the effect will be reversed, granting Joseph Joestar meter and having the opponent lose some. In the manga, Joseph is a clever trickster who has been shown to be able to predict what an opponent will say, and they did a great job translating it into the game.

@@butterfreedom5357 Yes, he can counter taunts. And this is the reason why DLC characters have interactions with Joseph : because they need his VA to record his "The next sentence you'll say is..." taunt-counter taunt, they also get him new lines to say for intros and finishes.

Rohan has a similar gimmick where if he gets taunted, his next taunt will give himself meter

    • @hambor12
      @hambor12 5 місяців тому +4

Notably, there is only one situation where this is not the case. Even though (Young) Joseph can counter-taunt Iggy and Pet Shop (animals) and Baoh (an otherwise nonverbal enhanced alien beast who has his own tacit narrator), he is unable to counter-taunt Wonder of U, the final DLC character and final villain of Part 8.
Joseph does not garner a direct verbal response from Wonder of U for Joseph to predict, resulting in him asking if they even heard him. For gameplay reasons, while no meter is removed from Wonder of U, Joseph receives a full meter of heat gauge for a successful counter taunt instead of gaining half while the opponent loses half.

There's a pretty interesting taunt in Guilty Gear +R with Dizzy where she interacts with her two guardians (Necro and Undyne are their names if memory serves me correctly). If you input a set of buttons in a certain order, it will activate a secret Insta-Kill where Dizzy is covered in a black sillhouette (simillar to when Sol activates his Install in that game) and KOs the opponent if they're close enough. This didnt didnt come back in Xrd, but I wonder if the implications are that she has a Dragon Install like her dad. It's a unique Insta-Kill hidden in a taunt detail. Neat.

6:37 I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but Terumi's actually not the only one who can do this. Technically the entire cast can cancel their taunts into special moves mid combo, or into supers and Overdrive outside of combos. It's just that Terumi is the most notable example of this since he not only can just fill his meter back up again very quickly after spending it all, but he's also just the biggest piece of shit in fighting game history, so people associate this sort of tech with him since it fits him so well lore wise, because imagine him just stomping your head in, and then all the sudden being like "I'm waiting for you to SUCK LESS!" before caving you in further. That's just peak trolling and I love it.

I’m a big fan of Beowulf’s taunt in Skullgirls, due to it having an additional effect like every other taunt in the game (EX: Big Band’s buffs his lvl 1 supers, Annie’s is a counter, Filia’s having a hitbox, etc.), but by far having the most useful effect.
By using his taunt, Beowulf automatically gets 3 full bars of Hype (his own unique resource mechanic), which gives him access to crazy damage off of grab. Plus it’s super easy to land with a lockdown assist (EX: Big Band’s H. Beat Extend/Take the A-Train, Cerabella’s Excellabella) which gives Beowulf enough time to pop the taunt, and still prepare himself to set up for Oki.

Without getting into frame data, Bryan has a move that is fast enough to launch the opponent and give a full combo. The taunt is kinda slow and can be interrupted, but the thing is that Bryan can also cancel it by blocking sidestepping, making it a mindgame between you and your opponent. While it is broken, it is balanced by that fact that it is so hard to that that even the best players struggle to do it consistently.

In Gojira - Kaijuu Daikessen, if you taunt close to your enemy, you can partially fill their feint meter. Considering that if you top out on your feint meter not only will you be knocked to the ground (where you are forced to take some free hits), but you would also lose your Wrath state (a rage state + your ultimate / super). This makes taunting in GKD a deadly tool to punish your opponent.

@@cosmic5665 funnily enough its actually kind of viable in combos, because the trumpets hits actually continue combos decently well but i think it works best for wall combos, i'm not sure though since its been quite a while since i've played skullgirls! best part is that it either fucks your opponent's mental up or make the pair of you burst out laughing, which is a win win scenario :)

Hey, Terumi main here. Just wanted to say, if you have all of your meter and your overdrive ready while you’re health is kind of low, Terumi can do some pretty funny stuff with his taunt!
First, start a combo with Serpent’s Laceration (A version). Rapid cancel the second hit, and immediately taunt. The opponent will be locked in hitstun for a very long time.
Then use Cleaving Fang. Make sure you don’t mash the button and get the extended version. Cancel the final kick into overdrive activation.
Next do 4 loops of his jumping down drive and his backwards drive, building meter. Finally use Snakebite. By now you’ll have a full meter bar ready to go, and you can either finish the combo with a powerful super, or if the opponent’s health is low enough, you can finish them off with his Astral Heat. This means that Terumi can use 2 full super bars, taunt you, and use his instant kill all in one combo!
