There's a universal mechanic in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle that if you taunt as your opponent is getting knocked down, they lose meter. This is to emulate the fact that canon fights in Jojo are about guile and mettle as much as they are about physical strength. The character Joseph Joestar has a unique counter to that mechanic. If you predict your opponent is going to taunt, you can taunt back, and the effect will be reversed, granting Joseph Joestar meter and having the opponent lose some. In the manga, Joseph is a clever trickster who has been shown to be able to predict what an opponent will say, and they did a great job translating it into the game.
@@butterfreedom5357 Yes, he can counter taunts. And this is the reason why DLC characters have interactions with Joseph : because they need his VA to record his "The next sentence you'll say is..." taunt-counter taunt, they also get him new lines to say for intros and finishes.

The Guilty Gear series also has it where there's a few different types of taunts, classified under "Taunt" and "Respect". Pressing the taunt button will actually increase your opponent's gauge by 10%, while the Respect, done by pressing Taunt+Forward, is a taunt that has your character give kudos to your opponent and doesn't increase their gauge iirc.
Not really useful, but I love the secondary taunt they gave to rash in killer instinct. Unlike the other taunt moves in the game, it can be looped, and it will cause rash to pelvic thrust continuously until either he is hit or you choose to stop taunting. It is literally there just for the sake of being obnoxious.
You forgot to mention that Big Band's taunt actually powers up his level 1 super AND taunting is literally Beo's way to get stronger so most of his routes try to fit 1 in to power up his follow ups. On the same topic Squiggly's taunt actually lets you perform a Raging Demon which is a neat mix-up if your opponent doesn't know.
In Gojira - Kaijuu Daikessen, if you taunt close to your enemy, you can partially fill their feint meter. Considering that if you top out on your feint meter not only will you be knocked to the ground (where you are forced to take some free hits), but you would also lose your Wrath state (a rage state + your ultimate / super). This makes taunting in GKD a deadly tool to punish your opponent.
Its technically a special move, not a taunt but Thor's Mighty Speech is pretty cool. It lets him build meter manually and the fact that its the same Voice Actor as Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes adds a lot to the cool factor
Something you forgot about big band is that holding up or down as you input a note raises or lowers the pitch. You can play the entire first bit of Cruel Angels Thesis with this knowledge
Surprised not many other people are talking about SSJ 4 Gogeta's level up Taunt from DragonBall FighterZ where if you do it seven times you get access to AN INSTANT KILL SUPER. That's Hella useful and I definitely count it as a good Taunt cuz he's doing the "come over here" finger motion and he insults the opponent too for giving him room to just do the taunt by calling him a dumbass😂
In Rivals of Aether, Shovel Knight has by far the most useful taunt. His gimmick in that game allows him to get money from hitting players. His Taunt opens a shop that can allow him to either buy relics to replace his Neutral Special, or armor which can be used to alter his stats (or to flex).
Gotta love HFTF's taunts. Like in blaze blue, you can taunt then cancel to add to your combos or just bait your opponent. Plus the taunts could be used as a cancel themselves without spending any meter.
There's a thing called Ki Charge in Tekken. It's technically a taunt since people use it to piss off players at the end of a round, but it's actually useful as it gives you counter hit, if you complete the charge. Note: There's some unique Ki charges like King. King's ki charge makes him side step around his enemy.
Not only that, you can also access certain move after a ki charge.Like blue spark hell axle,(can be used as a mix up tool) amk ki charge qcf 2,(used for fc df 2 ch) ki charge also makes chain throws easier
I'm surprised you didn't mention Kliff's taunt from Guilty Gear +R, which is 4 slow moving projectiles that are useful both on opponent's wakeup, but also to force them into either blocking long enough to allow him to close the distance, or force the opponent to try and jump over them and catch them with a big anti-air.
I love the makoto taunt from street fighter 3, it takes too long to land the hit, but if the rival get stunted and it have like 1 hp, you can do the taunt and it seems like the touch of death
I have a friend who plays the trumpet so I get to hear him play, and the fact that big rand has a built in musical instrument into his move set is amazing, also as I’ve heard someone say and I agree the brawlhalla team emotes are amazing, but two things you forgot to mention, LUIGI DOWN TAUNT, if you don’t know what it is look it up, and one of kazuyas taunts in smash bros is like a 5 piece combo that’s stupid
I think it's worth noting that Luigi's taunt legitimately has combo potential in Ultimate and also infamously kills in a single strike if the enemy hit has no ground to bounce off of. Otherwise, there's minimal application with hurtbox shifting amongst the cast, primarily (once again) Luigi's side taunt, as shown off in Sm4sh's intro dodging some narrower attacks, and Jigglepuff's down taunt which... At that point you may as well just crouch.
Tekken’s Bryan Fury also deserves a mention. It has a short hitbox but is unblockable and guarantees a followup if a move is done immediately after it hits. Without getting into frame data, Bryan has a move that is fast enough to launch the opponent and give a full combo. The taunt is kinda slow and can be interrupted, but the thing is that Bryan can also cancel it by blocking sidestepping, making it a mindgame between you and your opponent. While it is broken, it is balanced by that fact that it is so hard to that that even the best players struggle to do it consistently.
I know Kazuya has much better options at all times but his four hit combo taunt actually kills off the side and connects properly where a lot of his other ground vs ground followups will work. Not as interesting as Luigi's taunt and it doesn't have any ground invincibility like Ganon's spinning one but still functional as a flex. Like if the 10 Hit Combo actually worked on people who aren't asleep at the wheel.
Rivals of Aether Shovel Knight: His taunt opens a shop that you can spend gems collected from hitting enemies on a few items to upgrade your abilities, my favorite is this moving platform you can throw, ride on or push people with.
Literally all of luigis taunts. From spiking ledges to looking like a dong to the seal flop we all attempted as kids, he literally doesn't have a bad taunt
Another game that went unmentioned in the vid is Rivals of Aether characters, with a dlc skin for the character Elliana, (a snake in a steampunk mech) her mech turns into an arcade machine for the classic game Snake, and you can play with the control stick till you hit a button to cancel the taunt! Also RoA has tons of amazing references or looping taunts!
I remember of One Piece Grand Adventure, a game that I loved when I was a kid, and some characters get power ups by taunting like Crocodile dealing poison damage every attack after the taunt.
R.Mika's Mic taunt - if you get the full thing off, and get a throw off after, you get an instant kill. And even if you don't go for the full thing, it creates a low hitting, low range projectile if you cancel early and has a hit of super armor.
The big band one is legendary, especially given how much that game, and Big Band particularly, references JoJo. You can practically stop time, play your theme tune, then perform an ORA rush.
You can cancel your taunts into any special move but not normals or basic movement in jojo hftf. This means you can taunt to hide the input of any special, even charge moves or supers. I like doing this with Dio's raging demon or polnareff's charge moves.
my personal favorite taunt ever is luigi’s kicking the floor taunt in super smash bros ultimate as it has a hit box on the ground which means you can use it to edge guard and guarantee a spike off of the ledge
The First game with taunts, Art of Fighting (coincidentally also the first game with meter, super moves and stronger specials using meter), which is the one with Ryo and Robert you showed in the Dan section, used taunt as a game mechanic to decrease the opponent's meter.
Switch from Lethal League Blaze. When taunting in mid-air, Switch does a kickflip with his skateboard and sends the ball flying at an incredibly confusing angle for those that aren't used to it. It's a genuinely super useful move
I personally do like a good taunt that straight up insults the opponent character when you're fighting, 1 example of this is in the new upcoming SF6 where Luke trolls Ryu (or Ken/Akuma) with a HaDoUkEn. it doesn't have any effect in them but I just fine it funny is all.
I'm surprised the R-Mika promo from V-Skill 1 wasn't here or G's idle animations. Or Friendship/Mercy from Mortal Kombat. I also have a soft spot for Them's Fightin' herds' taunt input occuring when you attempt to Teabag and continuing for as long as you continue to teabag. Also, Rash beatboxing the Battletoads Pause beat.
Also from Super Smash Bros: Luigi’s kick taunt insta kills in spaced correctly and the opponent is hanging on the ledge Snake’s box taunt can spike opponents that are below you Kazuya’s punch taunt, while hard to land, can enable some combos
If you're wondering what song is playing on 6:23 its ape escape: pumped and primed prologue OST. Massive respect for putting one of my most iconic childhood memories OST's into a video!
well don't forget Snake's taunt in Brawl and Smash Ultimate where you can just gimp someone trying to recover by just dropping a cardboard box on their head "Bink!"
Taunts in yomi hustle can be cancelled to bait opponents, give a full bar of meter, and maintain your airspeed speed so you can use them to close distance. It's great
Should have mentioned that in Street Fighter 4 Dan can cancel out of his super taunt into an ultra and catch opponents off-guard, giving it an actual practical use. Also in Street Fighter 5, his V-Skill taunts have the property of letting him cancel out of special moves or even his normals.
My favorite is the Luigi down taunt in smash bros. It spikes the opponent and if timed perfectly can hit an opponent that's almost at the ledge, so it's an instant KO.
In smash, Luigi’s down taunt can kill an opponent on the ledge, Kirby’s taunt removes his sucked ability, Dedede’s crouch is used as a taunt since they’re disabled in online
one thing to note is that the inputs for big band's trumpet is somewhat accurate to the valves on actual trumpet. the only ones that dont work are C and G which are both no valves, but every other note is correct (for the main register of trumpet, because the physics of how the instrument works the interval for no valves gets smaller and smaller hence the next register having different fingering). The way they fit all of them is both E and A are valves 1 and 2, but with big band it's LP + MP for E and LK + MK for A. It's also great that they made C and G valve 3, because of how the valves open 'portions' of the trumpet. Put in incredibly simple terms, valve 1 opens up one 'measurement' of air. valve 2 opens half a measurement. Valve 3 opens up roughly one and a half, but the sound for notes that use one and a half measurements are better when you press down valves 1 and 2. Which is why both E and A *can* be played with valve 3 but it's typically frowned upon. Apologies if I got explained anything weird or messed up something, it's been a while since I seriously took trumpet lessons where the mechanics of the instrument were involved.
Speaking of Big Band's taunt, well, Black Dahlia, the new (well, relatively) character from Skullgirls has a practical taunt, she throws away a liquor glass after drinking from it, and it can actually hit the opponent.
In Tekken 7, Julia Chang has two taunts. One where she makes a peace sign and says "Cheese" and one where she waves goodbye. If you see her make the peace sign, attack her. If you see her wave goodbye, step back, she can cancel it with any input.
Another useful taunt is Thor In MVC3, I think Nago taunt might be a reference to that since he goes on talking for a long time but actually builds super meter while doing so.
in Your Only Move Is HUSTLE (Yomi Hustle), the taunt on the Ninja character automatically leads to a few attacks you can only get after hitting with the nun-chuck attack once, along with granting a meter of your super bar.
Snake’s box taunt and Luigi’s down taunt spike from smash bros should’ve been on here. Box taunt gimps are hilarious and while Luigi’s taunt spike can be hard to hit, it’s so disrespectful and surprisingly strong I love it.
The Smash series technically does have some taunts that could fall into this, and in particular all of Kirby's taunts have the secondary effect of removing your copy ability.
anji's respect in +r is actually a very useful part of his mixup game, since it shares a similar animation to his 3P overhead, and can be cancelled meterlessly into low option!
jojo asbr taunts have the interesting property of standing up opponents after the taunt finishes, it makes up for some wack oki setups like trish comboing off her level 3
Anji mito's taunt startups in +R and prior looked like his 3p, which was a command overhead, but you could cancel it early into a low, so it was used in his mixup game. also brian fury but i'm sure a billion other people are saying that
JoJo ASBR has a cinematic taunt that immediately stands the opponent up as well as takes a bar of meter. You can use the taunt in combos and it is actually really cool mechanic. (although you can only use it once a game and only when the enemy is downed)
[TEKKEN] Bryan's taunt is one of the best taunts there is. It powers up some of his moves, giving a blue spark effect and who can forget the taunt jet upper.
The team emotes in Brawlhalla are fantastic, but Big Band is unbeatable
He's one of my favorite characters from a design standpoint

HC’s taunt where he just rambles on about existence is my favorite
So true
You forgot to mention that Big Band's taunt actually powers up his level 1 super AND taunting is literally Beo's way to get stronger so most of his routes try to fit 1 in to power up his follow ups. On the same topic Squiggly's taunt actually lets you perform a Raging Demon which is a neat mix-up if your opponent doesn't know.
I think it's cool that big band's trumpet is actually somewhat accurate to the fingerings of a 3 valve trumpet so that one's my favorite
7:24 ngl, picking on this game a few months ago I went to learn one or 2 lol. The metal gear solid theme, pretty cool.
Q's taunt is so good that it's actually really important to his gameplan. In Q guides, they usually say ehen you can and can't safely taunt
The best taunt cancel is Falco down taunt into down smash
“Hands of my- CAWK!”
Don't forget that taunts took away special meter in Art of Fighting 3, or taunt cancels in Garou MOTW
Kragg's taunt is much more useful, doing 2 damage is very important
Gotta love HFTF's taunts. Like in blaze blue, you can taunt then cancel to add to your combos or just bait your opponent. Plus the taunts could be used as a cancel themselves without spending any meter.
So sad that asb and asbr taunts are so much less interesting
So this is a first person shooting game called "Team Fortress 2" and it has a thing called taunt kill that mostly one shot any class.
Rivals of Aether Shovel Knight:
His taunt opens a shop that you can spend gems collected from hitting enemies on a few items to upgrade your abilities, my favorite is this moving platform you can throw, ride on or push people with.
I can never forget the Luigi taunt. And how good it felt to land that for the very first time.
Fun fact: not a fighting game but lost judgment has taunts that not only deal damage but knock down the enemy.
plus all the yakuza taunts build heat
Literally all of luigis taunts. From spiking ledges to looking like a dong to the seal flop we all attempted as kids, he literally doesn't have a bad taunt
Xiaoyu's 1+3+4 Taunt isn't just disrespectful, if you time it right and cancel it, it can dodge low sweeping moves.
From this vid they're all impressive, but I'm shocked you didn't mention 3rd Strike Sean or Dudley who's taunts are projectiles.
Thank you for including Among Us Arena! That game is THE game for useful taunts.
It really is
I remember of One Piece Grand Adventure, a game that I loved when I was a kid, and some characters get power ups by taunting like Crocodile dealing poison damage every attack after the taunt.
Was hoping somebody would mention Kliff's taunt from GGXXAC+R where he calls you an idiot (BAKAMON!) and four stone kanji appear
That big band clip was unreasonably rude, i love it
The First game with taunts, Art of Fighting (coincidentally also the first game with meter, super moves and stronger specials using meter), which is the one with Ryo and Robert you showed in the Dan section, used taunt as a game mechanic to decrease the opponent's meter.
Switch from Lethal League Blaze. When taunting in mid-air, Switch does a kickflip with his skateboard and sends the ball flying at an incredibly confusing angle for those that aren't used to it. It's a genuinely super useful move
I personally do like a good taunt that straight up insults the opponent character when you're fighting, 1 example of this is in the new upcoming SF6 where Luke trolls Ryu (or Ken/Akuma) with a HaDoUkEn. it doesn't have any effect in them but I just fine it funny is all.
the character beowulf in skullgirls has a hype meter that fills up when he taunts which he can use for specials
4:40 That amount of disrespect...Oi!
6:57 And that's from Brawl too! Didn't think that was possible.
Got jojo's in skullgirl by my friend once, never played ever after that
ASBR's taunt system is a good example. If you taunt your downed opponent you can take their bar making them not use their supers
Can’t forget Deadpool in MVC3, where he literally says “this is my taunt”.
Terumi's taunts are funny af. Especially considering how they're essential part of his gameplan
I think you should have mentioned taunts in asbr and how it lets you take away 1 meter for your opponent if you taunt them when they are on the ground
Also from Super Smash Bros:
Luigi’s kick taunt insta kills in spaced correctly and the opponent is hanging on the ledge
Snake’s box taunt can spike opponents that are below you
Kazuya’s punch taunt, while hard to land, can enable some combos
If you're wondering what song is playing on 6:23 its ape escape: pumped and primed prologue OST.
Massive respect for putting one of my most iconic childhood memories OST's into a video!
well don't forget Snake's taunt in Brawl and Smash Ultimate
where you can just gimp someone trying to recover by just dropping a cardboard box on their head
"Bink!"
I will never forget that one Big Band clip where they played Happy Birthday after clutching a game with a happy birthday combo
SS4 Gogeta’s taunt in DBFZ building up a one shot mechanic is always hilarious to me (and really fits his character)
I specifically came to the comment section looking for a mention of SSJ4 Gogeta
Luigi’s down taunt especially in melee when you can wave dash across stage is my favorite useful taunt
Taunts in yomi hustle can be cancelled to bait opponents, give a full bar of meter, and maintain your airspeed speed so you can use them to close distance. It's great
How is Bryan's taunt not on the list? It is probably the most widely used on in competetive play.
Big Band is on a tier of his own, not only can he Happy Birthday the entire enemy team, but he can play the song halfway through as well
one thing to note is that the inputs for big band's trumpet is somewhat accurate to the valves on actual trumpet. the only ones that dont work are C and G which are both no valves, but every other note is correct (for the main register of trumpet, because the physics of how the instrument works the interval for no valves gets smaller and smaller hence the next register having different fingering).
That’s really cool!
Speaking of Big Band's taunt, well, Black Dahlia, the new (well, relatively) character from Skullgirls has a practical taunt, she throws away a liquor glass after drinking from it, and it can actually hit the opponent.
Thor's taunt in MvC3, where he gives a full speech that gradually fills his Super meter.
In Tekken 7, Julia Chang has two taunts. One where she makes a peace sign and says "Cheese" and one where she waves goodbye. If you see her make the peace sign, attack her. If you see her wave goodbye, step back, she can cancel it with any input.
Don't forget about when Happy Chaos goes completely nihilistic and just drones on and on.
Another useful taunt is Thor In MVC3, I think Nago taunt might be a reference to that since he goes on talking for a long time but actually builds super meter while doing so.
My favourite one is Goku's taunt where he hits the griddy
in Your Only Move Is HUSTLE (Yomi Hustle), the taunt on the Ninja character automatically leads to a few attacks you can only get after hitting with the nun-chuck attack once, along with granting a meter of your super bar.
The taunt for the other two characters, Cowboy and Wizard do damage and allow you to dodge low-hitting attacks respectively.
I guess the R.Mika in SF5 microphone toss or Thor's super long taunt monologue in UCVM3
My second favorite is Luigi's bored kick taunt. It's downwards knock back is crazy!
I love all ur videos man, the editing, the music choices, it’s all so good
This just reminds me of how Bayonetta had two entire dance sequences for taunts in Smash 4 but they were mangled in Ultimate in order to be quicker
anji's respect in +r is actually a very useful part of his mixup game, since it shares a similar animation to his 3P overhead, and can be cancelled meterlessly into low option!
jojo asbr taunts have the interesting property of standing up opponents after the taunt finishes, it makes up for some wack oki setups like trish comboing off her level 3
In JJBA ASBR, Taunts when opponent is down, will remove one bar of meter. taunts (in classic jojo fashion) are a essential combat move
[TEKKEN] Bryan's taunt is one of the best taunts there is. It powers up some of his moves, giving a blue spark effect and who can forget the taunt jet upper.
