    I just started trimming and edging... my preference is an x-acto knife (large 3/8), with a nice sharp blade...some use a trimmer (Fiskars or Cricket), but it's too easy for the blade to get stuck and mess a card up, and being a perfectionist, the x-acto knife works best for me... if there is a small imperfection, a little piece of fine sandpaper works wonders. I had never thought about adapting my cards to fit who I was, but it makes so much sense, as each one of of carry our own magic ~ Enjoy

    When I got the Goddess Tarot one of my viewers mentioned that it works really well with trimming. I'd never seen or heard of anyone modifying decks before, so I was like, "why would you want to do that?" They explained it could look nicer, or make the deck easier to handle. I'm a "book purist" so even though the white border did bother me and the cards were too big for my hands, I didn't consider it for a while.
    Quite a while later I finally decided to try it, and after cutting the first single side I literally started crying. It felt SO WRONG to be cutting them. But as I'd started, I had to do the entire deck, there's no going back. I was incredibly upset about it for the first few cards, but I do really prefer the solid blue back, without the white border. The person who told me about it mentioned that they trimmed off the entire decorative border with the names of the cards, too, and made them even smaller. I didn't do that. I ONLY removed the white, just as you have it here. So I am happy with the lack of white. And I really like the idea of edging in gold. Never seen anyone talk about edging decks, I really like how yours look!

      I had that similar feeling while trimming the Hardy Tarot! For the first ten cards I thought I'd made a horrible decision, but then seeing it completed and working with it without the borders I fell in love all over again!

COM @ this and im going gather the materials you've listed in this vlog and do my decks as i feel them to be done as you mentioned .... THANK YOU! oh and i subscribed to your channel!

      Jillie Freeman Honestly I can relate to you as not being brave enough, but once you get over that hump and accept or more decide if you want a perfectly shape deck or a cool custom deck? But like I said once I got over that hump and accepted that your custom trimmed and edged deck will not come out super perfect, but the tiny imperfections make the deck even more personal, unique & something that is your very own. I recommend getting yourself a cheap RWS or a 3$ Miss Cleo deck, a cheap corner puncher & paper trimmer and practice trimming and edging on that cheap deck before you trim you Mart El or Visions. Trust me just trying it that one time on a cheap practice deck is worth the experince. Very fun and rewarding when finished. I bet you'll even love the cheap practice deck you do once done.

    I would not edge the last deck. I love how the card look when you fan them out. I watched three of your videos today. First I saw the one about the Mystic Faerie Tarot I ordered in an intoxicated state and can't return and then the RT 5 deck your can't live without and finally I wanted more info about these topics re: The Mystic Faerie Tarot which I think I now love after your review ...but will need edging.

  • @LaFeeVerteMagick

    I love how you have edged your decks! For the Hardy Tarot, I would go with silver, I feel like black is maybe to harsh and wouldn't blend as well with the cards backs, it also has that kind of magickal and sacred vibe to it
    I love seeing all these deck customisations but honestly ever since my Faery Forest fiasco, I am never trimming another deck... Ever.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  8 років тому

      +LaFee Verte I am leaning toward silver. The art is really quite gentle in its own way, so I worry that black might be too harsh. Thanks for your input :) I totally don't blame you for not trimming another deck! I think I'd feel exactly the same way! You poor thing!

    I am an edger, and a trimmer, I like to use four or so colors, but on that Hardy tarot, that's a tough one, I think maybe gray, the pattern from the backs when you fan out the deck is pretty, my Ceccoli does a similar thing, I ended up edging it in a dark navy, even though the backs are greens w/a touch of red..

    I love and want to thank you for all your tips on trimming and edging. I ended up trimming and edging my "Mary El Tarot" which came out just lovely. I left the words, but might end up trimming those off soon. I edged my Erotic "Manara" tarot, my golden universal RWS deck along with others. My latest trim and edge project is going to be the large Thoth deck. Can you please give me any tips on the best Gold pen or marker I can purchase to edge and color a boarder with?? My favorite atm are the Faber Castell pit pens which are oderless & are waterproof. They also leave enough time to wipe clean before drying incase you make a mistake. I have the Faber Castell Gold, silver & copper pitt pens, but want a more brighter real gold for my Thoth deck.

    I have edged 2 decks. But I find it takes too much of my time. So, I don't edge anymore. What I like about what you said about modifying decks is that you don't modify just for the sake of modifying. I haven't trimmed a deck. I don't feel the need to do so. I do see that some decks to look better trimmed. But I don't want to cut my decks. I like them the way they are. Again, I find myself in the minority. But that's ok with me. I travel to the beat of a different drum :) xx

    • @ellejacobs548
      @ellejacobs548 8 років тому

      Good to know I'm not the only one. I've been reading for a while now. When I started reading no one cut or edged their decks. I guess that's why I don't feel the need to do so. xx

    • @ellejacobs548
      @ellejacobs548 8 років тому

      +Donna I am not sure about the card production. I do know that borders don't have an impact on whether I can connect or read a deck better. Again, I think it's because decks weren't trimmed back when I first came to reading tarot. We just bought the decks we liked and read them LOL xx

    • @KateyFlowers

    Thanks for this, Katey! I have the same Universal Tarot deck & the border *really* bugs me... been trying to figure out how best to trim it, 'cos I didn't necessarily want to cut all the titles off but I really like the way your deck looks so I'm just gonna go for it. I recently trimmed my Crystal Visions Tarot & am super pleased with the result. You are so right - the images DO seem a whole lot brighter & more vivid without any white borders.
    Personally I'd leave the edges of your Hardy Tarot as is... when you fan them out the backing creates this amazing psychedelic design that's just too cool to look at! :)

    I have to say your Dreamtimes reading/oracle crads remind me of "The Mary El Tarot" size wise of the boarder. They have that large black boader, but on the Mary El it was just too much for me as well as for Marie White herself who was surprised at the size when her deck was published. She wasn't happy with the size and she herself recommends trimming them so I did. Thanks again for this video and any Gold pens/marker you know of. Still looking for a good gold beside the Faber Castell Pitt pens I been using which is more of a Matte finish. Looking for a more metallic shiny gold thank you!

    They look great Katey! I don't know about the last one. I would lean toward black in case the colour already on the edges bleeds through the silver? Or is it more heavy duty ink than that? The Hardy Tarot, if you edge it, I vote for silver. For 2 reasons. A) I love silver, and I see it's been gravely overlooked so far (lol) and B) I think it would bring back that element of fancy that you said was missing a bit once you trimmed it. :)
    Just my humble opinions! :D Love your trimmed decks! Very nice!
    Oh, how do you apply the inks on the sides? Is it an ink pad, do you just pat it or slide it along the edge? Is there a tool you use?

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  8 років тому +1

      That's a good point - about 'the fancy' 😄
