    Thank you for this! I just trimmed my new Star deck and if anyone is hesitating to make the change, I say go for it! I was amazed how taking the dark, dense blue color from around the beautiful art work liberated the energy! Really! I mean it, it was like taking the cards out of a cave and setting them free. Now I only trimmed the sides fully and took off most of the top and bottom, but did leave the names and numbers. This makes the cards more horizontal which I don't have a problem with, but maybe some tarot purists would. But they are lovely and I know I will now enjoy working with them much more. I did not like the large oracle size, so now they are perfect!

    I use the marker for t-shirt and for me it is the best marker, it does not smudge, does not smell and dries quickly. In the end it gives me a very good edge protection that looks like a very thin silicone film, but is very very strong. There are several colors and they have a strong, homogeneous pigment

    I have a tendency to not cut a straight line no matter how hard I try. I would use a guillotine style paper cutter to trim them to ensure perfectly straight cuts.

    I still find hard to believe how can they went through all the work to make such a beautiful deck and then, at last, they missed out on the borders by watering down that beautiful art work...Thank you Katy for sharing your trimming technique's.

    I love borderless cards! Very nice job trimming and I liked the edging you did too. Just a suggestion for those looking for options on marking symbols on the cards...instead of handwriting on the cards you can print out the letters, numbers, and symbols on transfer paper in whatever font you choose. Then simply transfer them on to the cards and add a bit of clear varnish to ensure that they stay in place and don't come off in shuffling.

    Beautiful! I love the edging, and thank you for the corner rounder recommendation. I have the Fiskars one and I have the same complaint about it, so I will definitely look for the other kind. It's a shame how such a beautiful deck got printed in such a subpar way but good to know it can be rescued this way.

    Hi Katey! When I used to work in an art supply store, they have something called "Sand Paper Strips" stuck on a wooden spatula to get a nice grip. I believe that should come in handy for such projects where the trim is slightly off. Much easier to sand and fix that problem like fixing nails with a nail file. Just thought I should let you know.

    I'm excited to see this video now! I've already trimmed one of my decks and edged a few (it's like, my favorite personal touch now besides hand crafting the bags I put them in), but I'm now debating what I want to do with The Halloween Tarot. Helpful, thanks. I was very scared to do any of this, but recently trimmed my Heart & Hands tarot after the edges of some cards got a bit damaged. Unfortunately following the border on the back meant a few images got slightly cut off, but overall I'm shocked at how well it went! I did buy a 2nd copy just in case. I have still been scared to edge so far... but suspect the Deviant Moon that's on its way to me will be my first edging attempt since its backs are black and it isn't hard to find / expensive.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому

      aquamarine18 oh how fun! Congrats on your first trim! It can be a bit tricky trimming so that both the front and back look good, but it sounds like you managed pretty well. I think the Deviant Moon will look great with black edges!

  • @weststartarot-Liz
    @weststartarot-Liz 6 років тому +1

    Thanks, Katey! I have to admit the deck looks great without the borders! I really don’t mind the borders especially after I edged the deck in midnight blue. But, wow, looking at how the cards look with the borders gone I’m going to have to consider trimming. I’m just not the neatest at that and I love this deck so much it would kill me to ruin it..... but I may have to give it a go!!!! Lovely job !!! I like the idea of using a tissue after edging . I edged my golden Rider in bronze metallic and got some running on the backs.... Anyway thanks for another great video!!! How do you like reading with the Star Tarot?

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому

      +Eliza West yeah, I didn't totally hate the borders. It was more that I had trouble handling them and shuffling them! The lamination was quite sticky, and then because they were also so big, I could barely handle them! I definitely prefer it this way! I've only done small readings with it as I'm still working through the book, but so far, it's been really awesome, and surprisingly grounded!

    Holy Batman... That deck is gorgeous trimmed! Thanks for showing us your method. I've only trimmed one of my decks (a throwaway) and I've been too nervous to trim my Mary-El. Ah, perfectionism! Always getting in the way. Haha. By the way, you showed us the "Heidi" (?) Tarot... Have you done a review on that yet? It looks cool and I don't remember seeing it elsewhere on your channel.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому

      It does take a bit of courage to get over that initial perfectionism hurdle, but it can be totally worth it! That's the Hardy Tarot. I have spoken about it a few times on the channel - you can search "Hardy Tarot" on my channel page for videos if you'd like. I really love the art, but never managed to totally connect with it. Almost, but never quite enough! So I actually traded it this week, after a year or umm-ing and ah-ing about what to do with it! I know Natalie from Champion of Coins Tarot loves it and has made a video or two on it. 😊

The cards on this deck look completely different after the trimming...it's funny, I held off to this day buying this deck just because of the borders, indeed the borders are a completely turn off switch for me...and although I like the incredible new look of this deck after trimming; trimming is a time consuming thing to do...I am not ready to commit to it, just yet, not my favored.

    Ooh! Now I'm back in love with the Star tarot again! Just for clarification, do you always use an ink pad to edge, or do you use something else if the cardstock is different? For example, you said that the Star tarot has laminate, what about a deck that is matte? Would the ink from an ink pad wipe off as easily?
    Also thanks for sharing your technique. ^_^

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому +1

      I have always used an ink pad, yes. I've never edged an absolutely matte deck, though, that I can recall, so that may cause issues. I did edge the Anna K with a ink pad, and it certainly isn't a glossy deck, but the excess ink came off fine with a tissue.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому

      Kadden Mathews really? I haven't found that at all... in fact, with some like The Star Tarot, I actually find them a lot easier to handle and shuffle once trimmed! Do you think it's a certain card stock that doesn't respond well to trimming?

    • @kaddenmathews2901
      @kaddenmathews2901 6 років тому

      Katey Flowers it’s more likely that I’m horrible with scissors. And it shuffles alright, esp non riffle. But when I riffle I find that the cards seem to clump together more. Where when I don’t trim I just get more even. I might end up getting a huge chop block style cutter and see it that works better.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 років тому +1

      Kadden Mathews ah ok, that makes sense. I think sharp scissors can help with that! 😊
