1999 Op Allied Force: Yugoslav Transport Helicopters Shoot Down US Drones! | DCS Reenactment

During the 1999 Operation Allied Force campaign, one of the preferred Yugoslav tactics to destroy NATO drones involved the use of transport helicopters in air-to-air combat role. The first RQ-5 Hunter drone lost by the US Army in the campaign was apparently shot down by a Mi-8 helicopter flying alongside, with the door gunner firing a 7.62 mm machine gun.
Today we re-enact this event with the added challenge of NATO fighters defending the drones.

As a retired ground pounder, I would check whether the door gun had ammo by looking to see if the ammo belt was feeding into the gun. Just a technique.

I figured the "reload" he's talking about is clearing a jam but it seemed like his DShK was jamming like every 20 rounds which is fucking crazy. Maybe it's simulating g-force stresses on the feed because they're doing really weird maneuvers, but even then would the gunner actually need to open up the feed every time?

@@athodyd if you get a jam in that type, the thing you do is pop the feed tray and look for brass or links which were out of position and blocking the mechanism, close the tray when it is clear and try again. Takes two seconds, most of the time. Old guns which have been poorly maintained and heavily used, like those assigned to a school, are a real PITA. I have seen am M60 which only fired single shot.

could these helicopters have a gunner on both sides? in games/movies war documentaries/news etc ,i only ever see one door gunner. surely 2 gunners mean more kickass? thats science fact. please educate me.

Roger, this is an old thing. Eurofighters have been using towed decoys for 20 years. As far as I know it's not been tested in combat.
