Zendaya and JDW are good actors, not great. Both have a problem where they seem to be putting on a performance at times rather than acting naturally.

Well I've seen all of JDW's recent movies, tenet, black klansman, now this and I just can't seem to enjoy his performances. He's not a great actor to me
And i loooove zendaya and I didn't fully believe ber either. I think she needs more life experience for this role. She delivered the lines well and everything, but the thing missing (for me) is just an intangible adult quality.

I watched it with a friend and had a blast, we basically spent two hours making fun of everything bc as you rightly said it's really fake deep and boring! Every scene I kept thinking of much better films (which is obviously not good lol) and the dialogue/acting felt VERY forced and unnatural.
Either never showing their faces or filming it all in one take are genius ideas and would've made for a much better movie, ugh you mindddd

If you’re gonna cast someone who gets cast believably as a teenager to play an adult even if they are an adult and then say people shouldn’t be uncomfortable that it looks like a teenager is playing an adult.... like who’s fault is that. But Idk I feel like stans didn’t wanna talk about that. They say she was the same age as Margot in TWOW but like she shouldn’t have been cast opposite Leo’s 40+ yo ass either maybe?

negative review consumer solidarity,,, it is so satisfying to find people to hate the same thing you do for similar reasons. also hard agree to everything you said esp with how try hard this movie seemed, even the chemistry between the two of them felt so forced lmao. i was waiting for them to also break up in the end bc clearly malcom learnt nothing, so when they didn't i was disappointed but not surprised. towards the end when she mentions she's his girlfriend??? i was like ??? why are u putting up with his shit omg??? just leave?? do better for yourself pls.
going in my bar was pretty low cause I had watched euphoria and um the dialogue was truly awful so it was bold of him to do such a dialogue-heavy movie. i want the unearned confidence of a cis white man pls. anyway yeah that's two hours of my life I'll never get back. icb i really sat through and survived so many of those awful monologues too, it should be criminal to make your audience suffer through what is essentially (terrible) self insert fanfic. i need everybody to start bullying sam levinson into either making good movies or stopping altogether

  • @WTHnada
    @WTHnada 3 роки тому +11

    Before watching your video:
In my opinion it wasn’t supposed to be this weirdly artistic, utterly incredible film, I think it was supposed to just be an honest, real-time movie about two people with their own real flaws and issues in a relationship that was ready to combust. I think they decided to just film it from the the climax of it all but also in a way that climax had its own intro, rising action, etc.
I feel like their argument about movies that people think is authentic and raw was supposed to mirror what people would probably say about the movie itself. As a person who wouldn’t know, I can’t exactly say it was raw/authentic/real.
In my opinion it was exactly how I thought it would be: in real-time, a couple who argues for 10 minutes and makes up for the next 15 and repeat. With all that being said, (I’m probably leaving out some other points lol) I still enjoyed the movie. I wouldn’t say I necessarily loved it though. It FELT real but again I wouldn’t really know. I don’t think it needs to be overhyped but it was really good. Also I think the ending was a bit ambiguous but in my opinion, those two should break up or seek some form of therapy. I think they could be a good couple or at least friends, but they clearly need time to work on themselves individually. If I’m leaving anything out I’ll probably mention it after I watch the video! :)
My opinions AFTER watching your video: *hold on I didn’t finish but i didn’t want to forget stuff*
Yes! I agree about the Zendaya not seeming to connect with her role enough and them not having chemistry. I like the idea of the casting choice and I think they’re individually amazing at acting but I wasn’t feeling the connection that much, it felt forced.
Also I was trying not hate the dude’s character bc I didn’t want to go into it biased assuming the dude is at fault but I think yeah they made him pretty shitty 😬 and yeah it felt like he was arguing about things the writer of the script personally felt so that didn’t help. I got sucked out of the scene and started thinking about whether or not this was based off of the writer himself. They were both toxic but he seemed to be MORE toxic. He was bringing up some dark stuff. I agree that at points it did feel like something I wrote on Wattpad in like 8th-10th grade, but again I didn’t think of it as something that should’ve been super deep and life-changing so I didn’t walk out of it feeling empty-handed, if that makes sense.
I disagree about seeing Zendaya as too young for him. Although they lacked chemistry to me, I saw her as a grown woman, but I think society also has to have a larger discussion on how we feel about age-gap relationships. Bc I viewed it as a 25 year old with a 34 year old or so and some people hate that but I don’t think it matters if they have a respectful and healthy relationship. In this case, they did not.. 👀 that’s all I’m going to say about that.
About the black and white thing. I was wondering that as well. About the purpose of it being shot in b&w but I just figured it’s just a choice and it doesn’t necessarily have to be for the sake of making it seem more artistic. I guess I’m just less judgemental and I don’t mean that in a condescending way I just mean usually I assume that I just don’t understand the creator’s intent rather than thinking their attempt at whatever they were doing was unsuccessful.
I forgot my other points so I’m just going to make a second comment bc this one is super long lol

    • @cherrybepsi
      @cherrybepsi  3 роки тому +8

Omg thank you for your thoughts I legit love reading these long comments! 💖 Also you're right I think I was being too harsh on the age gap! I think it was my own mentality of remembering Zendaya from Shake It Up 😩 But you bring up a good point about how it was unhealthy in different ways too, and I wish that was more explored in the movie (especially when Malcolm said that line about "you're not the first broken girl I dated/f*cked" like dam ok....)

Second comment: (also sorry if this is really annoying I just enjoy having the discussion with you but I realize it’s probably easier to watch your opinions than to read my written ones)
Anyways yeah!!! The part about them saying everything! While I don’t think the Mac and cheese scene is the best scene example, they did that a LOT throughout the movie! They didn’t listen to “sHoW dOnT tELl” 😂 I felt like I was being told all the character flaws and personality traits etc. but I guess it was harder to show since it was a movie about them experiencing an argument for hours in one night. I was thinking maybe due to the way they wrote the scenes they couldn’t show some things but I personally felt like a LOT of things they yelled at each other it was like “no one talks like this” or “if you can psychologically unfold this person, how can you have never assessed yourself of questioned wtf do I do that’s problematic?” I don’t think I explained that properly but yeah.
Also!! The part about them filming over quarantine-I think I gave them a lot-probably too much-credit for that. I was excusing a lot of things bc in my mind I was like “well they probably had to hurry and film this on quarantine. They probably couldn’t go back and reshoot things, etc. etc. so I think when I watched it, all the things that I found unusual I dismissed bc I was like “it’s probably me being too critical” or “it’s probably bc they filmed it during quarantine”.
I think some parts were supposed to be direct though. Like the song she played him, I didn’t think that was supposed to be indirect. Idk I felt like it was done on purpose? But I guess it depends on what the consumer prefers/thinks is acceptable?
I just realized I watched this movie at like 3/4 AM so that’s probably why I didn’t realize I dismissed a lot of the issues in the movie. I think I also dismissed a lot of my qualms bc I highly regard both the actors.

Okay legit though the actors are Phenomenal like can you imagine if they weren't there to carry this movie 🙈 Also yeah you're probably right about the song she plays him since it was SO on the nose and actually worked as a way to further the plot along. Again thank you for your thoughts!! 💖

Also they love to overlook racism or other serious issues like transphobia, ableism, etc, then recommend a movie saying that its their favorite of all time when really racism is basically one of the main characters lmao

ive wanted to watch it despite the bad reviews, as well as the other sam levinson movie with bad reviews ive heard about (assassination nation), but i keep postponing it. part of me feels a bit embarrassed because i feel like these are the sort of movies i would have made in my first year of film school, and to see someone else with the means to make them with a considerably big budget makes me feel both weirdly ashamed and jealous?? idk
but yeah, it felt like it was trying to go the ~artsy route but tbh it ends up looking like, well, my first year short film. black and white so we didnt have to worry about color grading, minimal crew because were all students, one set, two actors... it felt like that, like a school project, to watch the trailer. and one thing i can say about levinson is that he seems to be truly interested in talking about "current" things, in feminism and gender identity and stuff like that (euphoria and assassination nation, as far as friends have told me, sink deep into these issues), but one thing is to have an interest and another is to have something to say, or even to say anything well. ive heard a lot of praise for euphoria's camerawork, and at the same time i completely understand why you would say this seems like a marriage story fanfic self insert -funny, since matriage story seems to be a self insert of the writer director as well :^/ thats male auteurs for you, i guess
still, my worst fear about malcolm and marie was that it would end up either as a simple quickly made first year project with big name actors, or as a mediocre stage play filmed in the most self serious way possible. by your review, it seems to be both

If you're interested, I would actually still recommend watching for yourself just to see if you like it any different! I may have been too harsh and I'm also just one person 🙈 And okay yeah I should've mentioned that I thought marriage story and its whole concept was ALSO cringey as hell, like I'm just sick of the genre of straight couples that need therapy 😩

    • @casir.7407

@@cherrybepsi i actually think that this genre could be really interesting if they actually depicted a couple that has any sort of real affection to one another. i get the appeal of watching toxic relationships, as you said, but i also wish i could see more normal everyday relationships of people who love each other in a more mundane way. idk, i feel like these sort of movies are super successful and get big actors and awards because they allow them to act big emotions and stomp and scream... i kiiind of feel like this is why i prefer movies that are a bit more subdued, with a relationship i actually root for. classic melodramas come to mind, like Diary of an Unknown Woman, Le Bonheur, The Apartment, Melody, and even more modern stuff like Moonrise Kingdom and Her. toxic relationship movies are harder to make in my opinion, because youd need time to get the audience to know both who these people are. why they hate each other, why they loved one another before, and how that relationship finds a closure. maybe some toxic relationship movies that i enjoy, like Gilda or The Favorite, work because of the genres and archetypes they work with, i think.
lastly i think id like to see your opinion on that zoe kravitz show, High Fidelity. it feels like it deals with issues of art and integrity in art while leaving a lot more space for relationship drama and how that affects characters in a realistic way, kind of what i understand malcolm and marie wanted to be.

As a person who rarely looked at Zendaya on the disney channel and people who watched other reviews like Double Toasted. about the movie and Zendaya's performance is that she does exhibit a lot of maturity in the role she was given. It could be your bias.

I think that’s true but also it’s not shocking that people who are so used to seeing someone who even to this day has portrayed a teenager, can’t just drop that lens. It’s unsettling mentally, and would just take seeing her in more mature roles for longer to fully feel them. For others, it would definitely sink in quicker.

@@SunnyGoesIn1D Yeah trust me. I understand. There are a lot of kids who are adults now i knew since they were in middle school and I was at least 4 years older than them who are getting married and having babies. It is unsettling in real life too. I mean now I understand why parents freak out when their kid starts dating. It is normal to feel that way when you see someone grow up on tv and in real life. But I guess we all have to learn to let go.

@@mgdkns6678 I strongly disagree. My argument is valid. Even when she is on the show Euphoria she is doing adult things as a teenager. That is what the show is about. Teenagers with heavy addictions and doing adult things. So, I find it ridiculous that people think the this current role is too grown up for her while praising a show that exploits teenage life. The film was "bad" because it was bad. Not because of Zendaya. I am sorry but Zendaya is a damn adult and she needs to stop playing a teenager. I don't care how young she looks. I cannot stand it when adults play teenagers. My point is absolutely relevant.

The black and white concept was supposed to tell us how each of them are on opposing sides arguing despite wanting to reach some kind of grey area. Please don’t review things when you can’t do a simple inference...

you can't come up with your own interpretation for an artistic choice and then be mad at me for not using the same interpretation lol. anyway zendaya said they used the black and white to evoke old hollywood and they also just thought it looked pretty 🤷🏽‍♀️
