- Anyone else a recovering twihard? We should start a support group. Anyway I wanted to make this video because I'm SO TIRED of having to hear this weird twilight redemption narrative from people who were too busy reading hairy potter to know what good literature is in the first place. So yeah. We're gonna discuss why Twilight the movie, the books, the franchise, still suck. No disrespect to Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart. Or Catherine Hardwicke. All disrespect to Stephanie Meyer.

I remember being in middle school when Twilight was big. I was a Warrior Cats kid (lol) so I was part of the "hahaha Twilight is BAD" crowd (as though Warrior Cats is any better). I remember in the "Twilight haters" crowd at the time there was a lot of emphasis on how creepy a lot of the relationships are (the age gap, the stalking etc) but NEVER how racist it was. 🤔

Look, I'm just gonna say it, the Mormon JUMPED out in these books/movies. I was in a similar religious school when I read them the first time, so I didn't notice but then when I rewatched/read them after I was like oh... Like from the relationship dynamics to the outfits to the racism, that stuff is all very common and normal in really conservative Christian and Mormon groups. Like is some of the new twilight content good? Sure, but the actual series was whack. Love your videos!

I remember seeing a youtube video that says Twilight/Stephanie Meyer wasn't that bad, and while I can agree with the fact that society mocks teenage girls and their interests and the young actors were young and shouldn't be mocked for films from years ago -- Twilight was just bad, and Stephanie is racist. "Very Mormon" is such a good way to put it, because... wow, you can't divorce Stephanie's Mormon upbringing from her writing because she sure as hell doesn't. This kinda makes me want to rewatch the first Twilight film but also... I don't know if I could take the acting and the clothing.
(Side note: Unfortunately not just Taylor Lautner wasn't native of the Quileute Tribe cast. Julia Jones and Booboo Stewart are also not. Of the indigenous characters in the movie series, Kiowa Gordon, Chaske Spencer, the amazing and underappreciated Graham Greene, Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier, and I think Tyson Houseman are all Native.)

i really love the format of this vid! i have pretty similar feelings abt the whole thing, it's been kinda weird to see ppl (mostly white women so...what do we expect) give a platform back to meyer bc of this renewed interest in twilight. it seems like a lot of ppl have trouble acknowledging that its ok to feel nostalgic for it without defending the series and its creator. it'll always represent a time of relative peace and creativity for me but that'll never rule out the laundry list of problems it has.
I think you're right, it's so weird how it's always like "all or nothing" with so many ww. Like they either despise it because it's cringey and for girlie girls or they love it and anyone who disagrees just hates women 😭

Couple points: Kristin Stewart is bisexual, not lesbian. Having a female partner doesn't make her lesbian any more than a male partner makes her straight. Bisexual doesn't mean "just waiting to have a partner to know what I am." Also, she definitely can't act. She started picking roles that are just her personality.
Nikki Reed got flack I think because she does have more masculine facial features, which are fine, but Rosalie was described as being the most beautiful feminine woman ever.
Jasper was not only a confederate, he managed to work his way into being the youngest confederate major ever. So he did a really good job fighting to own black people.

I wouldn't have minded a native tribe being in these books if they weren't depicted as dirt poor idiots headed by a leader who couldn't get his kid shoes and who was fine with a white girl sitting on on a native ceremony that's conducted on lawn chairs around a bonfire and then their lore picked apart and reassembled into a cocktail of WTFery. But she didn't bother having ANY respect for them at all.

This was the most chaotic video plot wise, also favorite twilight memory was when my best friend forced me to sit thru the entire movie last summer (i only had seen snippets from when it came on tv) and then 6 months later sent me a twilight marathon tiktok and said "I'm gonna force you to watch twilight" as if we didn't literally just do that. like we sat in her back yard and roasted marshmellows together 😐

Oh my god I'm only 4 minutes in and this is the realest most hilarious take on twilight I've seen and I love it. I remember all my friends being pissed that Edward didn't look like Kaname from Vampire Knight (at least in my friend group Twilight's popularity coincided with Shoujo Beat and Vampire Knight's popularity. Everyone was in the mood for bishounen vampire stories).

I was never a Twilight fan but I was really really tempted to read it because I liked Vampire Knight. I ended up reading Bram Stoker's Dracula instead and my brother read Twilight (strange turn of events). (Bram Stoker's Dracula had pretty illustrations in it, Twilight didn't lol)

The director of first twilight movie wanted Alice to be Japanese but Stephanie refused to let any poc enter the twilight franchise.
Honestly twilight would still suck even if it had POC because the storyline was itself trash🗑. The books and the movies had TOO much issues to the point my hands would hurt if I keep writing.
There are some books like Bridgerton which also happened to have majority white characters but the series adaptation had the main female lead as a POC and the season 2 of Bridgerton have indeed become popular due to the amazing chemistry between the main male and female lead, the amazing story writing ( ofc it wasn't perfect because there's literally no series or movie which is completely perfect ).

I'm new to your channel but I really enjoyed this video! not only were you super funny and entertaining to listen to but I particularly enjoyed the last little part of the video where you touched on a lot of the more serious issues of the series.
a while back I actually tried bringing up a few of the issues I had with white people making excuses for Twilight's racism and brushing it under the rug, and I wound up being completely shut down and accused of "not understanding anything" by a semi-popular white youtuber which... wasn't fun, yeah. so it is really nice to see the exact same issues I was worried about being talked about by a woman of color instead of fully brushed under the rug the way most white people do.
imo it's not a particularly big deal if people still feel nostalgic about the series or enjoy it or anything but it's just bizarre to see so many white people arguing that Twilight "was kind of good actually" or that "people ONLY hated it because girls liked it" considering the only real legacy the franchise has left behind is 1) weird racist Mormon propaganda and 2) weird knock-off media inspired by the books that just romanticizes the creepy stalking and abuse even further like 50 Shades or the 365 Days movie. idk it was just really validating to hear a lot of your concerns w/ the franchise and I really liked the video, thank you for putting a lot of it into words while still making it pretty funny and entertaining.
Yeah I feel like we end up doing a disservice to "girls media" or media oriented at people who grow up/are raised as girls when we throw a kind of blanket, "everyone makes fun of girls for no reason so we should stop criticizing media made for them and in turn also not take it as seriously" Like it's still media we can still analyze and critique 💀

The casting for Jacob got changed because Stephanie Meyer told the actor to cut his hair. He the actor did not want to cut it for religious reasons. I don’t support Stephanie Meyer at all.

i would love to see your review of 'aparichit' (2005)- this movie was so ahead of its time and still doesn't get recognition the way it should by international media
like every aspect of this movie is top tier- i mean costuming in indian cinema is hardly ever done right and this movie gets it completely right. the clothes signify each character's mental state while still looking realistic and moderately stylish if you ask me.

Also, I also came to think that the Twilight craze itself ended in 2010 after Eclipse was released in the theaters, even though there were still two movies to go.
Why, you all may ask?
Because Twilight was essentially EVERYWHERE from 2009 till mid 2010, there was all the merchandise AND parodies in the media, to the point that most people couldnt take it anymore.
Also, when the remaining two movies were released, there was not as much marketing as the preceding ones.
Then 2012 came, The Hunger Games came and then the YA Dystopia craze started.
I can’t imagine most of the movies having a blue tint. I wouldn’t have made it through my first watch. The blue tint slander stands😭😭
Imma put myself out there: I think Underworld is much better than Twilight (bearing in mind I only saw the first three movies, and the 2nd and 3rd only once each). Yes, it's goofy and wildly inconsistent and predictable and melodramatic in its own way, and it has it's own shifty implications / backstories about vamps and werewolves, and it tries to science its way through the supernatural stuff, but it was still cooler, more badass, it still had Michael Sheen, and it didn't have frickin' IMPRINTING (as far as I know).
I feel like I mightve seen one of them with my sister when I was younger but I legit do not remember it at all so I'll give it another try 😌 I actually watched Blade for the first time recently (it was amazing ofc) and I was just like wow, I miss when vampires were scary and cool 😔💔

I have a morbid fascination with the twilight series as i cant believe how a series filled with so much problematic themes became a cultural phenomena. Twilight sucks so badly and i love seeing creators pick apart its corpse lol. The only nice things i can say is that myer is decent at writing violent scenes (the baby birth scene wtf) and the movie ost is amazing.
i think the whole "reevaluation" of twilight is just people thinking they can’t like something and still recognize the flaws in it. twilight is nostalgic for a lot of people and that’s fine. my English teacher loves it, and she still acknowledges that it’s not good. i could list so many examples of bad movies right now that i still like because of nostalgia. i am the EXACT target demographic for twilight and i think that it sucks. because it does. twilight is not good, people knew that then and people shouldn't try and act like that's not the case now.

Also i was always a fan of vampires but online enough (and also not like other girls you see) to be rather sceptical of twilight even beforehand but then decided to actually read it before judging it.
That was right around the time the forth book came out and i read all 4 of them within 2 weeks? Just inhaled them, even translated they were just really good at sucking you in
And i have this distinct memory of finishing the 4th book at like 3 am, putting it down, staring at a wall and just. Realizing I had wasted DAYS of my life on this
And then I proceeded to fall right back into the Twilight hate camp (Not in an actively harrassing way, just in a "Listed it on the list of things i hate on my Neopets user profile page" way)

He wasn't a newborn, if I remember correctly his lack of control around human blood was because he was the last to join the Cullen and he only become a "vegetarian" when he joined them so since him stopping to drink human blood was "recent" for him smelling human blood was like putting a glass of whisky in front of an ex alcoholic.

I'm a mother, and I have a preteen daughter. I'm that mom who shops at Claire's and Justice for things *I* wear. Hell, I still enjoy a lot of books that were aimed at kids when I was a kid, and I'm still a damned sap for young adult romances and always have been. My first exposure to all of this was a trailer for the first movie, and I thought it looked good! So I decided to read the first book, and OMG. My concerns EXPLICITLY were regarding how a clearly abusive relationship was portrayed as this beautiful ideal, and how teens would be pressured into going along with this idea, and I even went a step further in that I was concerned that it would be a stepping stone for worse things, and sure enough, I was right.
This is relevant to the story here: When I was a teen, the genre known as "young adult" was stuff like Babysitters Club books. Children's books were for toddlers and babies. YA was elementary school. Teens didn't read much as it was so uncool that kids like me were beaten. So very little was written specifically for teens. So there was this gap and the next category was adult. Loung-kidearlykindergarten and under set
So what I had as a teen were either Babysitters Club type books or bodice-rippers. Like many teens of my time, this negatively affected how I thought relationships should be, and my first relationship was abusive and lasted five years since I couldn't see it for what it was. It was like a romance book, so it was good, right? He hit me out of passion, right? And forced me into sex because he just wanted me so much he couldn't help himself, right? RIGHT?!
When I first read Twilight, my gut response was dismay since elements of those bodice-rippers were mellowed out slightly, and he sex removed, then sold to teens as the ideal for teenagers. The stalking, the control, the breaking into her house to watch her sleep!! None of the rapists in the Lisa Kleypas books I devoured would have started right with rape. They'd have started like Edward and worked their way up. It doesn't surprise me how many Twilight fans went on to love Fifty Shades without having the ability to see Ana's lack of consent as an issue as long as she had an orgasm, which must have meant she really wanted it even though she'd say No.
Well, I hate to say I was right on this, but I was right. I started fighting against this over a decade ago, and I guess better late than never. Too bad, though, that Twilight gave way to worse and worse, and it's still getting worse. :(
