  • Hiii everyone! As you can see, I watched The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) (directed by Peter Jackson) for the first time recently. I actually watched all three of the LOTR movies in the trilogy, but it just so happened that when I sat down to talk about it, I only managed to get through the first one before I realized I had been talking about hobbits and elves and orcs and Tolkien for like an hour. I don't know if I will do this for the second or third LOTR films, but let me know how you liked listening to my thoughts and unpopular opinions here! I thought it was a fun way to get my thoughts out, and if people like it enough I might do one for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King too. My main opinion on the trilogy as of now is: Samwise Gamgee is the best, Frodo has some problems, and Gandalf and Saruman were in love. Thanks for reading and watching!

Yeah Tolkien has a MASSIVE noted issue w race... The book tries to touch on people being more complex... It also uses horrific wording on occasion tho... Win some lose some when the author was literally born in the 1800s I guess.
Some of the issues were 100% on the movie makers tho. The books actually describe that the majority of hobbits are brown, and yet when Maori people tried out for hobbit extra parts during the hobbit trilogy, casting people literally told them hobbits couldn't be brown... So while Tolkien is not innocent I find myself side-eyeing the people making the movies in the 90s and 2010s even worse for not having done better despite the time they were living in
Edit: I am a dwarrow for sure (they only use the word dwarf in the movie but the books use dwarrow occasionally and my friends who have dwarfism say they prefer that we don't. Use that word for fantasy species). Got super into the lore and fanlore for them when i was in high school and the hobbit movies were coming out.
Edit 2: ❤ what u say about gandalf and Bilbo hooking up. Perfect read. But also they do not know its The Ring when the movie starts, to them its just a fun little invisibility charm, until Bilbo gets all Its Mine over it, which is when Gandalf leaves to go get more research. When Gandalf comes back and goes "aaa the ring get tf out!!" That's cuz he just confirmed it was The Ring for the first time

Oh my gosh yeah my thoughts exactly like... okay, so the source material is not so great. But does that mean the filmmakers have to go so hard on the ra cism too? And I had no idea that they legit turned brown people AWAY who auditioned for primary roles that is so insane!! Peter Jackson you'll have to answer for your crimes one day

Children often recognize basic truths that adults are too afraid to speak openly. Now, there are exceptions to those truths, but that does not make them untrue.

When i first got into LOTR I obviously jumped to fan spaces, and I felt it was weird the lack of discourse on the blatant racism coding of middle earth. Like the Uruk hai are literally gross ugly inherently evil cannibalistic black skin “people” and the “best” race are the eloquent perfect looking blonde white skinned people. It felt waaay to on the nose and I was surprised that in the discourse i did see (especially on tumblr) the fans DID NOT like it being brought to attention.
Anyways I think If I was in middle earth I would want to be an elf because of theyre cultural aesthetics but realistically I’d probably be dead.

Loved the video! Haven’t seen the movies since I was a kid so I’m choosing to believe they’re about a bunch of white gays who are also just little guys having to unlearn their racism, instead of whatever actually happens.
Also the hobbits would be SO sad if they had the covid pandemic they wouldn’t be able to have all their little parties :,(
