Choctopus, they released a novel that had the plot. If a game company has to explain the plot via a book that should have been in the game in the first place, they fucked up.
Basically, if the plot isn't in the goddamn game, your game doesn't have a goddamn plot.
Things like books and comics should be side content or suplimentary at most. It should be content that expands on what's already there or at least explains what the game itself couldn't.
If you're relying on the book to contain the plot you couldn't bother to put into the game then you failed. Period, no questions asked.
What's worse, the novel could actually be really good, but because the game is a hot piece of garbage nobody is going to buy it.
Never mind the lacking plot, I don't even think they tell you the name of the antagonist in game. That's a big fuck up right there.
My guess is that since all the lore would be in the novel, they didn't had to put it into the game. Which is insanely stupid but also wouldn't make the game good, so it doesn't reaaly matter

To be fair to overwatch, the actual game has nothing to do with the plot so I’m perfectly fine with it being relegated to the animated shorts and comic books they occasionally release.

This game is such a baby’s first game that it not only made every button jump, but it freezes itself so the child could process that they were playing a “video game”

Super Meat Boy Forever has A,X,B,and Y on the controller as Jump/Punch/Special Punch,and down as a slide,yet it's one of the hardest games I've played.

The jumping in this game is ass because it slows down all momentum. The point of a jump is to jump over gaps from a distance, but you barely get any distance at all from a jump

I struggle to believe that the farmer npc made enough money to live for the entire farming year on the singular ear of corn he finds in the end cutscene.
There's a Russian family who escaped about 150 miles from civilization to escape religious persecution and wound up regrowing their barley crop from 1 barley straw that they found in their potato patch. I forget their name, but they were found by geologists.

Apparently there's a tie-in novelization that goes into detail on all the characters and what Wonderworld is and all the stuff and it's really good... which means this conversation could happen at some point:
"Hey man have you played Balan Wonderworld?"
"I don't need to, I read the book"
That's a complete failure of storytelling then. I shouldn't have to read the manga to understand the anime, so why should I read the book to understand the game?

well, i watched all the cutsene in yt and its pretty good.
Someone needs to tell them that you're supposed to put the plot inside the game, not inside a book that you're selling separately.
Never knew about the novel... Overwatch didn't have much of a story till the series came out but even then you get see what faction, why they split up and why they fight. Simple but obvious reasons..
The shorts just EXPANDS the lore.
Here you get no clue whats what. I literally had to rely on the fact that Balon looks like NiGHTS and assume he does the same thing (when he says about finding your lost heart). The other side characters have simple reasons why they turn to the dark side but are kinda bland as heck!
This game wants to be story heavy, with deep characters and all...but they cut all of that away and pasted it in a book format outside the video game itself... Do they know the game is the more expensive one of the two? And thus the one you REALLY want people to buy? This could’ve been a bit of a saving grace, and they messed that up hard as well!
When Masahiro Sakurai was making Kirby’s Dreamland he wanted to create a game that would be controlled with one button. But that game as simple as it is still uses two buttons because he realized that only using one button is a really stupid idea.
Good choice in retrospect
This control scheme only work on games where the character literally only needs to move and jump (or whatever other action), and even then having one button isn’t the whole thing, you can also do directional inputs, mashing, holds and releases, etc. all in order to let the player do more with less.
This game clearly needs at the very least two action buttons (besides the triggers for swapping costumes), but instead, they’re either cramming the abilities of a costume in one button, or removing jump to fit the other action, all so everything works with one action button, and this includes the menus! What!
And also maybe have a third button or an extension of the costume swapping so the player can return back to normal, or actually let all costumes jump, because I’ve seen cases where players can get nearly stuck in certain spots because the only costume they have left can’t jump, and that area requires you to jump to be able to escape, even if that’s not a common occurrence, that means you SHOULD be able to jump at all times in one way or another, that’s just bad game design if the player can get stuck in a level and must exit it or restart it in order to free themselves

Some games on Rhythm Heaven work with only one button, which means it can work, but that's a rhythm game so god know how you can make that work on a platformer

@@XerneX127 how do you run out of buttons by implementing costumes? They all have one gimmick only, they can all work on any button that isn’t the jump button, which is every button. Just pick one main button for jump, and one relegated to costume powers

@Zach Edwards I might be remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure the frame drops of Unleashed mainly come from Day stages, especially Jungle Joyride and Eggmanland. I have no memory of such severe frame drops during Werehog stages.

I live in New Jersey, and from what I have seen of this weird game, the CGI cutscenes and environment look exactly like the state. Weird looking people all around, and generic looking kids jumping all around. That is basically what the weird state of New Jersey is.

wow I didn't expect this many people to reply and like this and trying to spark discussion. I read your replies and yeah it was not the best comparison but it was the first thing that came to my head so take that as you will.
And you can kind of tell Yooka Laylee was trying, this game just feels like they got the most passionate art team they could, then just paid people in nickels to sit around in an office and occasionally program.
Yooka Laylee was made by veterans. So you wouldnt call it "indie".

If I recall correctly, Kuwanger comes from the japanese word (gonna get this wrong) Kuwagata, which mean either beetle or stag beetle if memory serves. It's amazing Kuwanger was like the only non localized boss in x1-3

Fact: Balan is an amazing character design and the cgi cutscenes are beyond top tier. sooo much charm and effort in them it's commendable
It offends me because I can see where this game could have been really great in the conceptual phase, but we got 6 jump buttons.
Choctopus didn't have to play this dumpster fire of a game, but he did it anyway.

I love Balan and 'evil Balan''s design. I really wish they gave those characters the proper justice they deserve.
Imagine if you played Balan and had to save this Wonderworld from evil Balan, and his influence was destroying this perfect reality everyone is living in. Then it does some segue that this evil Balan was formed by the darkness of the people who lived in it and Balan's darkness himself, yadda yadda, heavy self reflection and maybe a plot twist.
The concept they were initially working with HAD potential (i.e., something happened in people's lives that deeply affected them and made worlds around that). The execution? Not so much.

It seems like whoever made most of the character designs especially Balan and cutscenes put a lot of work and effort in while whoever was making the actually game didn't put that much care into the game
The character designs have more thought put into them than the entire game
Feels like this game tries to appeal to the people that constantly complain a bout game difficulty.
"Water levels are too hard when you need to manage air" OK let's make the water manouvering automatic.
"Games have such confusing controls!" Lets make everything the same.
"Boss fights are too hard." Make them way too easy.
"Stories are too confusing." Remove any engaging stories

Apparently after Yuji Naka joined Square Enix in 2018, he kept pitching the idea of making a proper platformer, but Square Enix's head honchos weren't interested. After a lot of begging, SE acquiesced but with the caveat being that this would be Yuji's one and only shot at impressing them with a platformer. So he was under a lot of pressure because Balan World's success would determine whether or not SE would broach the subject of traditional platformers. Even with all of that, this was the best Yuji's dev team could give us...so guess what's definitely not getting a sequel-ever?

I can explain those quicktime events for you. In those parts, you have to time everything perfectly to advance. If you get all excellents, you get a balan stateau. But if you get anything else but a excellent, you get absolutely nothing. This game can be very picky for perfection, also with those sport minigames.

I see the reason for the costumes that do almost the same thing in the same way I think of the pokemon that can learn the same moves. Because they´re either the same kind of creature or have the same kind of nature/type. That´s why the robot costumes shoot lasers (since they´re both the same kind of theme: Robots), the jellyfish and the dolphin allow you to swim (because they´re the same kind as well: aquatic creatures).
The lag is so excruciating even I regret that we made you suffer through this

Gaming companies always do this especially back then in the 2000's! Sega did it with Nights, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and Sonic Unleashed. So I'm not surprised that another game company would do the same thing.
