Having read the book myself: Don't expect high quality writing. Expect some context, at least, but don't expect any high quality prose. Or even for it to line up exactly with the events of the game. You just kinda gotta go with it.

@@ona_7072 that combo is even more broken than Balan's costume, and you can just enter both controllers, give an Ice Fairy to the second player, use Soaring Sheep or Floaty Flower yourself, link them and you are good to go just controlling a single character
The combo makes so that the floatiness slowly gives you height indefinitely, you can explore whole stages with a single jump

The secret final boss is the deep web hitman who has been hired to take you out, because you played all of Balan Wonderworld, so you're too powerful to be left alive
He still needs to complete the tower of Tims to unlock the balan costume and read the book for the lore.
But Choc you didn't fight the special "Lanced" bosses that have only a 25% chance of appearing after activating hard mode!

3:54 it looks like the archway acts as some sort of trigger point and tracks *only* materialize if you walk through with the right costume. That's some stellar game design.

the reason for the Act 3's lengths, is because those are all about exploration
specially since they all hide 1 over powered costume each
like Chapter 7 Act 3 (the chess world), holds the Triple Jumper (best costume by far)
10:12 well, i mean you finish the secret act 3 to see that gorgeous character that Balan is...which is a little worth it...but yeah, outside of that not that much.
Here's Balan Wonderworld Fixed [UPDATED]:
*First of all, we're getting rid of the level cutscenes [We'll keep in the opening & closing ones] and instead we'll replace them with little picture books or slide shows that you can collect to find out what their story is [Think Psychonauts/Hat in Time].
*Next up, I suggest we, at the very least, put Balan in the hub next to the Tower of Tims.
*Third [say it with me now], MAKE [Clap] THE [Clap] BUTTONS [Clap] DO [Clap] DIFFERENT Clap] THINGS [Clap]!
*Make the characters talk [With boxes of course] so we can actually get some LORE that was in the book.
*Make the levels go Clockwise as to put some sort of order in this fever dream of a game.
*We think it's best to lower the number of costumes by, oh I don't know, A LOT!
*Make it so you activate all the costumes yourself and that they can’t just randomly activate when they feel like it.
*Speaking of costumes, I think we should do something similar to what Lego Star Wars did and make it so when you push one of the buttons [Let's go with X at the moment] you can choose which costume you want/need.
*Make the baddies fit in more to their corresponding world [E.G. In Chapter 3, the baddies are bug-like creatures, In Chapter 4 the baddies have wings, In Chapter 9 the baddies are Carnival Related [Mostly creepy clowns and the like]]

Most of these are good except the first one. Why would you remove any cutscenes?? I thought it was widely agreed that the cutscenes are the best parts of the game.
-Make it so the baddies don't attack you Monster House style and are instead peppered around their levels. Idk the way the game just springs hoards of enemies on you at random is super annoying, plus it causes the game to have a fit any time it happens >:c
@@Lar_me I think because while they look fantastic, they have some poor framing/storytelling, I've seen people comment on other videos about the book's lore, which should have been in the game, but compared to what the book says, some of the cutscenes seriously downplay what some of the character's problems were--like chess guy just looks super petty just by what's in game, his actual problem is his wife died and he regrets not paying enough attention to her because of his obsession with regaining his championship title.
OK. Here's my takes on these.
For the first one, just make them skippable (unless they are).
Lowering costume amount is good, all of the clone costumes will be left with whatever's the coolest.
Enemies should definitely be spread across levels Mario-style.
I'll say 1 thing. I appreciate your commitment to this game

Except most Square games DON'T do that. The only game that comes to mind that pulled stuff like that was Final Fantasy 15, and it got flak for it since previous FF games didn't require supplementary material to get eh full picture (Unless you count 13 locking most its lore behind data logs. But again, it got flak for that. And even then, at least they had the decency to have that in-game).
And even then, SOME of the story was still present in 15, and enough to get the gist of what's going on. Balan doesn't even do that much.

Don't you remember FF7's multitude of sequels and offshoots? Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core?
Also, IMO SQEnix knows how to make convoluted stories and interesting locales, but they're not great in gameplay department. You want proof? Play Driving Emotion Type-S. Not only the worst SQEnix game ever made, but also one of the worst games of all time.

KH is a mess of storytelling in general. And the FF7 example doesn't actually argue thre point since none of that content is actually really necessary to make sense of the story. Everything you need to make sense of the events in the original game is there, the other stuff is just fleshing out over the years due to popularity.
(Some fans just ignore that side content entirely, and you honestly miss out on nothing since to a large extent they're all pretty standalone).
It's also not something exclusive to Square games at all? Most long standing Japanese companies pull stuff like that all the time, it's not exactly an isolated situation.
Hell, plenty western and European series pull that.
Balan is a standalone title, completely new, and this is how it opens with its storytelling. It doesn't compare at all to a popular game getting numerous sequels, prequels, and alternate perspective materials over the course of decades.
Balan straight up expects you to read the side stuff to be able to follow what's happening. It doesn't compare.
I looked up the emotion game. They're really only attributed as publisher from what I'm seeing, and it's long been established that stuff outside of RPGs aren't squares strong point. They never were.
The company was going under before they released the first final fantasy, back when they made racing games and sports games.
I don't see what that game adds to this conversation since the main topic is necessitating side materials to understand a story (which even kh's messy writing wouldn't fall under, since requiring seeing the plots of all games isn't inherently abnormal, even if I find kh making every single game necessary, even mobile stuff, kinda poor decision making).
As for gameplay, I can honestly say square is only one of many companies with shovel ware titles released by no name subsidies that were garbage.
I personally think even their worst offenders of doing stuff like this still had a cohesive enough narrative that none of that was completely required to at least vaguely follow what's happening, and when looking at their full list of games is also a pretty uncommon occurrence. Just marking this up as another instance of that feels almost like it's letting Balan off too lightly.
@@OsnosisBones The last point is just my opinion and a rant. I agree that it doesn't add anything at all.
And as for side materials in games, JP companies, and even some western companies did it, but within large AAA companies AFAIK only SQEnix did it as part of their business model ("It's very difficult to hit the jackpot, as it were. Once we've hit it, we have to get all the juice possible out of it" - Yoichi Wada, former SQEnix president). Even SEGA with their current Atlus+Arcade franchises weren't this bad.
And for FF7, especially for new players, good luck knowing the full story of it, especially since now the remake which is the one really accessible to most newer players is chopped up into 3 games, each of which, if their current release schedule is taken into account, might take an entire century for all of them to be released. Unless of course either they get the PS1 version, or the problematic ports of the PC version on modern consoles. Yep, now they didn't release side materials, instead they withholding the story in several pieces. Thank god IO Interactive went independent.
Balan Wonderworld is going to be "industry's newest whipping boy" (ref. Matt McMuscles) for a long time to come. part of me is amused, part of me is saddened.

Well it depends. This game did have a lot of potential, with the amazing cutscenes, characters, etc.
The problem is that BASICALLY EVERYTHING that they COULD'VE done wrong, they did wrong.
So if they did like a remake/remaster or sequel that fixed the problems the game had (but that would require basically re-creating the whole game because of how screwed up it is), I'd be all for it.
I want one where I play Balan. They need to make it good, though.

@@vfxninja5503 I was willing to accept it when I had the mistaken idea that Balan and Lance were actually literally the same being, that Lance was Balan fallen into despair but both existed at the same time somehow???, and that the kids were actually helping Balan the way they were helping all the other people get through their crisis points...
But then of course that's too cool a concept for this game, the truth is dumb, and Balan should've just been a weird eldritch top hat being after all. Boo.

Man, after seeing someone 100% the game (I'm so sorry for them) it makes me sad because this game could've been great. It had a lot of potential, and yet, the company responsible for the gameplay made Hey Pikmin, so...
Also, if you want to play a good game, I highly recommend Hollow Knight.

Don't bother with collecting all the statues, it's the equivalent of collecting all the Korok seeds in BOTW. All that work, for something beyond useless.

I wonder if a lot of the problems regarding the costumes could be fixed by simply choosing a "loadout" at those dressing room things, and also being allowed to freely switch?
Like, there's still a ton of other problems, but instead of having to deal with shitty costumes that can't jump, now you have a full roster of different costumes that you can freely switch between for various tasks.
Again, won't fix everything, but how many problems would that fix?
Choctopus just took not enough emotional damage from this game during 100% walkthrough...

The secret final boss was right there the whole time Choctopus! It was the game itself that was the final boss.
As someone who got all the trophies and costumes in Balan (I know...) I'm just mentally yelling, "Get the Dawn Butterfly! Get the good costumes!" Like all the costumes in the third act are good... except maybe gear king. Didn't seem necessary.

There might not be a secret boss here, but did you know there ARE secret bosses in this game? Triggered by keeping the difficulty level high by not getting hit... for some bizarre reason.

When in a level you have to kill alot of enemies, to unlock secret Hard mode.. Basically you walk around in circles killing mobs, and then at some (random point) they will Spawn in RED colour. meanning you have to ht them more than once. The enemies Bosses are 'harder' versions of themselves. Defeating a level on hard, will give you trophy(playstation ones) and the door it self will have a red thumps up.. However if the enemy hits you once you re instantly dropped out of hard mode.
Also collecting on gold/rainbow drops give you a 10 seconds dance.. LAME
Last but not least you should ve gotten the Balan skin (-check the Balan ritual with Tims) as its the most broken skin and mainly requires rainbow drops..
