I swear I've heard of other issues like this before with final bosses. It likely isn't the first sadly.

Plot Twist: Balan Wonderworld is a prequel to Mario Oddyssey. After his debut game failed Balan killed himself, turned into a Ghost, moved back to his hometown of the Hat Kingdom, and changed his name to Cappy.

One can read the story as being about mental health and the need to accept your problems and move on.
Chess guy was hella petty, but that was his arc y'know? He let one loss get to him, and blamed it for ruining his life when really he was the ruining it by not getting over it.
The sillier ones are really as valid as the rest, but the game does an absolutely piss poor job at getting any of this across.

@@YEs69th420 Chess guy's major beef was that he lost one chess game and then just kept losing after that, his obsession with trying to gain back his title caused him to neglect basically everything in his life in the process, especially the fact that his wife had fallen ill. She dies and he is left with nothing, causing chess to no longer just be him trying to regain something he loved... but something he outright hated for being the cause of his neglect that lost him what little time he could have had with his beloved wife. His choice to stay in wonderworld and defend his right to remain there is because within his stage is an illusion of his wife created by his heart, and he would rather stay within this false dream, even knowing it's not real, than return to the real world where his wife no longer exists.

That ending gave me depression, not because it was emotional, but because I genuinely felt bad for the poor souls that had to work in such a project.

Apparently in the book, Balan was a creation of Lance who owns this world, but saw how the humans were enjoying this realm and gained an interest in them. I think Lance wanted to keep the humans in the realm instead of dealing with their problems, while Balan wanted to help save them

I’m gonna be honest, the Ice World was nice, and the end cutscene with the girl deciding to let her husband back into her life and getting married while Balan was the guy getting them married was really cute. That’s all I’ve got for compliments on this game at the moment
It’s a shame that this game isn’t good, the character designs (Balan and Lance being big examples) look so cool to me

Actually, even the Tims make sense. They're the opposite of the 'Negati', which are the enemy's. The reason you collect tears to feed to them is because the Tims purpose is to eat the tears of those who enter the Balan Theater, and give back joy and happiness.

Maybe they shouldn’t have you buy a novel to understand all the poorly explained lore of the game. That’s probably WHY the game is as crap with its exposition, to get people to buy the dumb book.

Every time someone plays Sonic 06, it keeps me alive for another year of pure joy that fifteen years later people have not forgotten the game that led to the creator of sonic's departure from Sega.

He is apart of the Constructicons who are all evil construction vehicles. They can combine into 1 big giant robot named Devastator.

Yeah, I definitely recommend you read the novel. It doesn't save the game, but it makes literally everything make a whole lot more sense.

Everyone shitting on the game. But you can't deny the missed opportunity since the story would have been good
I think that’s why so many people were upset. It had Square Enix as a publisher, two of Sonic’s creators, some of the most talented musicians in the industry and a genuinely promising story. It’s just sad to see all that potential fall apart.
I would kill to see Balan get another chance (even if it’s not in platfomer/video game form).
In my opinion, the only thing I have beef with is that all the buttons do the same thing.
The one button feature was a nod to all the old school games that used one button for everything

The book actually is really interesting. There's a whole different story in there, with the residents of wonderland participating in their own storyarcs and shit. Everyone gets dialogue, too. It's seriously way better than the game and I'm actually disappointed that they didn't just lift the story from there.

Imagine if during the final boss, you have to jump attack, but the game only have costumes that don't make you jump during the fight. Like imagine if during development something like that did happen, course if they did they would of allowing jumping for most costumes

I feel like Choctopus is one of the last few people who are still playing through or even talking about Balan Wonderworld. Once it’s all finished though, I feel like this game is going to slowly become forgotten.
Oh you'll be mistaken. The game is a textbook definition of the term "hot garbage".
I think the lost potential will keep it in people's memory for a good while. A terrible game will be forgotten, a bad game that could've been a good game will be remembered for ages.
This game falls into the Mighty No. 9 category: Never spoken of, but never forgotten.
You know what this video made me realize, instead of having 80 costumes, why not just the one costume designed for each level and it looks different for the male and female. It would’ve solved that horrible level design and having costumes do only a single thing without fail. Just have the one costume be themed for the level and boom, instant game changer

I've been saying that for a while now.
Add some story from the novel into the game, make the boy and girl's story a little different to promote playing both stories OR split the 12 stagemasters up so each character gets 6 or something, Give us a jump by default OR make it so instead of finding more costumes you find "Powerups" FOR the costumes so you can upgrade them, then for completeing the game it lets you go to the other stages or something with costumes that DON'T belong to the stages so now you can dick around with shit or something?
That would have been really awesome! I honestly think you have better ideas than the actual dev team-

And you know what happens after you get every balan statue in the game? You get a little animation of the balan statue doing a dance, yeah that's it, THAT'S ALL YOU GET

Well not really... It was made by the same studio who made Hey! Pikmin... Which I dunno if it makes it better or worse....
It actually wasn’t. It just produced by Square Enix, so they own and funded it, that’s about it.
None of the studios who develop Final Fantasy were involved in this. It was developed by Arzest, a company who previously made 3DS games, and Balan Company, which was basically just Yuji Naka and new hires.

Balans Hat-off design pisses me of. He was the best part because he looks unique and charming, but then he suddenly goes "I'm Johann van Generico now! Look at my pretty-boy eyes!".

It's unfortunate that I think that twist design could have worked if it was executed better. It's better explained in the book, but only a little. It could have been used much better as a twist if done correctly.

I commend your fortitude for playing through this entire "game." Austin Eruption's video on Balan Wonderworld makes it clear that Yuji Naka had a grand vision in mind, but didn't have the right people and resources for the job, on top of his execution of the whole project.
I guess the story's moral is never to spread your ideas too thin.

Fun fact color for color detail for detail the box in the box fox mode is the default unity cube asset.
The box fox costume works better to crush enemies. It kinda makes a light that works as a signal for when the box transformation occurs. You just need to jump at that moment and crush the enemy. By the way, one of the costumes you didn´t find was the Balan Costume. It´s one of the best costumes in the game.
It’s like saying there’s a new smash game but they released the demo and hoped no one noticed.

Yknow. I used to find all the characters really funny, but I watched a video that gave a summary of the light novel for Balan Wonderworld and now I simp for Lance and go “Aww!!” when there’s a character I that’s not the main character on screen
Hey Choctopus. I finally figured out how to fix Balan Wonderworld. First of all, we're getting rid of the level cutscenes [We'll keep in the opening & closing ones] and instead we'll replace them with little picture books or slide shows that you can collect to find out what their story is [Think Psychonauts/Hat in Time]. Next up, I suggest we, at the very least, put Balan in the hub next to the Tower of Tims. Third [say it with me now], MAKE [Clap] THE [Clap] BUTTONS [Clap] DO [Clap] DIFFERENT Clap] THINGS [Clap]! After that, we'll make the characters talk [With boxes of course] so we can actually get some LORE that was in the book. Then we'll make the levels go Clockwise as to put some sort of order in this fever dream of a game. After that, We think it's best to lower the number of costumes by, oh I don't know, A LOT! Tell me what you think in the comments or if you have any more ideas.
Make it so you activate all the costumes yourself and that they can’t just randomly activate when they feel like it.

Balan Wonderworld is the poor man's Kameo elements of power.
I mean that's how Square Enix works, even back then. FF7 has Advent Children and Crisis Core. Kingdom Hearts had everything including a goddamn J2ME game being included as part of the main story. FFXIII has the 2nd game as well as Lightning Returns.

1. The business model of Square Enix is centered on the idea of "polymorphic content", which consists of developing franchises on multiple potential media rather than being restricted by a single gaming platform.
2. According to Yoichi Wada, "It's very difficult to hit the jackpot, as it were. Once we've hit it, we have to get all the juice possible out of it".
3. The standard game design model Square Enix employs is to establish the plot, characters, and art of the game first. Battle systems, field maps, and cutscenes are created next.
The 3rd point is especially important, since I believe this is the main reason why most Square Enix games can range from mediocre (Final Fantasy 7, fight me) to bad (The Bouncer, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep) to horrid (Driving Emotion Type-S).
Driving Emotion Type-S is especially notable, since this is AFAIK the only Square game which never had any way to be capitalized on its graphics, story, and characters, since it's literally just a shitty clone of Gran Turismo and one of the worst games of all time. It shows just how awful Square can be in creating a gameplay oriented game.

decided to say a few positive things about this game.
-the colors are all really pretty. like when emma cole was walking through the door through the rift thing and the pink light was behind her?? beautiful. most of the later levels?? amazing. the entire final boss fight?? absolutely gorgeous. good lighting makes me very happy and i had a good time looking at it.
-the circus level looked cool and i liked the clown aesthetic.
-lance’s goth design is very cool i like him a lot. i am kind of tempted to draw fanart of him. the hair is fun idk
-the final boss fight looked cool. once again the lighting, his attacks, the part where the fake lances disappeared and looked all pixelated, i thought it was all pretty tight
-lance transforming into his second form was so cool?? like the purple fog and the spooky dragon head, all great

There should've been bottom half of costumes, and top halfs.
War the bottom half of a costume and gain it's jump ability, and top half gives the offensive ability, and you can mix and match
