There is one in Level 1 also. There is in every map as I inspected it with DoomBuilder. I might have ben lucky to find on or two of them and not realized they were 30 secs. Then I made it a mission to save spam in the beginning of a map, rush randomly to find it, if failed reload. Else in half of maps I idcliped and cheated.

That's antithetical to exploration IMO. If exploration is supposed to be a big part of DOOM (and in my opinion, it is), then that's essentially punishing people for not exploring the right way. Which isn't exploring, it's following an intended path.

I didn't take anyone seriously. Blasted through Sigil II on UV, and it was pretty tough, but managable. I prefer it to the original.
Then I pistol-started UV, it was harder, but I knew more of the secrets, found more of those fireblu secrets, and there's strong weapons scattered across the episode.
THEN, I turned on fast monsters on UV, and I got absolutely demolished. Whittled down by the first few Zombiemen, and then finished by the Cacodemons IN THE FIRST MAP.

Despite peoples' opinions on both Sigils, I think the fact John Romero remains so dedicated to his baby after 30 years is a really huge and important sign of just how important Doom is as a whole. I recall someone once said that John Romero is one of Doom's biggest fans because he got to be part of and shape a game which was pretty much exactly everything he had wanted it to be.
Romero was never a very humble guy, but when you get to realize a dream project, and then everyone else says _"That's fucking COOL!"_ and don't just heap you with money, they keep loving it even when it's old and dated, 30 years and counting now, you DESERVE to be real proud of that.

The gimmicks of the fireblu and 30 second secrets were a bit weird to me at first, but they really grew on me after a couple of levels. It felt so arcade-like and so retro, going for that 100% completion by completing gimmicky "side quests", it took me back 15 years to a better time.

The Civvie Doom video we wanted and needed.
Just to add a few things: I take that Civvie played this continuously and that's fine. The moment you tackle UV with pistol starts and/or single segmenting, it's a whole new ball game. Romero really pushes the boundaries here in terms of resource starvation, to the point where the secrets become essential. There's a lot of frustration for UV maxers particularly due to the 30 second timed secret in every level, and this wad is one of the most blind unfriendly wads I've played. Once you practice and learn the layout and the setups, however, you start to appreciate Romero's precise sadism.

I also played on Hurt Me Plenty. (I learned my lesson about the random extra "for-the-lulz" Cyberdemons the last time around. XD) I dug the hellish visuals that incorporated a few new textures and successfully made the techbase & nukage sections feel like they belonged alongside the normal red & black abyssal caves, and I enjoyed the James Paddock soundtrack that always matched the mood and atmosphere of the levels. But it can't feel as novel or as surprising as it did the first time around. I quite liked the mixture of oppressive resource pinches and cruel little traps & puzzles - Sigil 2 does more of the same quite elegantly - but no matter how many things I like about the execution, it's still running up against diminishing returns.
I still have to give props for how Romero used his platform to point out all the _other_ free mapsets that were released this year & position himself as just one creator among the hundreds of artists that make cool things in their spare time just for the joy of creation, and the joy of play.

About the damaging floors (7:23); as there are those ubiquitous elevation differences between the sectors, you could evade the damage entirely by standing beyond the "edge" of the sector. Meaning that most of your hitbox is hovering above the lower floor, your feet not touching it, so the damage won't ever be applied.
I'm not sure if not spending enough time in the sector for the damage to register is a factor, so I can't comment on that.

    • @sofija1996
      @sofija1996 День тому +1

IIRC damaging sectors also work off of a timer and deal damage every X tics, so if you can move past them quick enough, you don't take damage. You can even use the pistol swaying animation to time it - it takes the same number of tics for the ironsights to sway from one "peak" to another while moving continuously as it takes for the floor to damage you.

The thing about UV is that Romero kind of balanced the levels around the idea that you'll pistol start them. So if you play the whole episode in sequence, the first map is tough as hell, but by around the halfway point it's only maybe a little harder than average.

The problem isn't that there's too many BFGs to find, but they are too easy to find in my opinion. They felt like giveaways, especially the one in E6M3.

what i love with SIGIL 1&2 here is how Romero keeps a consistent game design approach. shooting wall eyes to progress, shooting fireblue for secret rooms, having the slipgate be the level end.
of course, plenty of fan wads would have these mechanics. however, it would always be randomly implemented for a one off map gimmick. making it a cheap trick to confuse the player.
while in Sigil, since the game design language is taught in the early levels you can always can keep an eyeball out for them. its a fun exploration reward.
hell, even the idea here with a cyberdemon on every level in UV is a really funny way to up the difficulty. honestly, i prefer that over the respawning teleport gimmick of nightmare.
doom 1 definitely has too many limitations to justify making another episode for it, but again i just appreciate what Romero did here. and im very excited to see how he tackles Doom 2 next. i assume he will do a more doom64 approach, with a more sadistic difficulty spin...... which id be hype for.

Playing this on UV for my first run through and it’s great. The levels look gorgeous and Romero truly demonstrates how to make challenging maps that don’t deviate into dull SSG slaughter slogs. Use the bfg and plasma often for clusters of monsters and master the cyberdemon bfg 2-tap. Also the limited monster roster from Doom I isn’t a hinderance IMHO but to each their own.

I watched this video prior to playing Sigil 2. He was right about most things. One of them is that it is truly tough on Ultra-Violence - especially on the first few levels. There was one thing that I had to check for myself which Civvie got me curious about the final Spider Mastermind... he didn't have a conclusive analysis on the 3 BFG shots it took him to take down the SpiderMM since it was clear he was too far away from it to one-shot it. I got into the final boss room, stood right up against the SM like I do with all appearances of the Spider Demon when it's possible to get up right-close to it, and one-shot it with the BFG no-issue... unless you count the fact that doing so resulted in me dying from incoming rockets afterwards. I had to tackle the boss several times due to multiple threats in the room, but I can confirm that the Spider Mastermind can still be one-shot with the BFG. If you aren't standing right up against it when you fire the BFG then it won't assert all the damage from the BFG blast and the tracers combined to deliver maximum damage.

So I rolled through this last night for the first time immediately after doing Sigil 1 in the same sitting (as I hadn't played through it since release). Hooooo booooy, Sigil 2 on UV was something else all right. I probably should have started on a lower difficulty, but I figured, hey, I play lots of slaughter wads. I'll be fine. And I was, but damn was it tedious. I think there's a Cyber or two on basically every map and wow does it take a while (if you don't want to die). The ammo and health starvation was real and that later level wth the elevator shaft you have to ride a thousand times to get into the side rooms was peak tedium. By the end of it I just wanted it to be over, it was sucking all my energy out of me, haha. I'll probably go back and try it again, but man.. to anyone reading, UV is rough on this, even if you're not pistol starting and playing continually. Secrets are basically mandatory too.

I think it's something more personal, I simply loved Sigil 2, maybe the episode isn't that good anyway, but that's what I think.
I love that he has improved several details that he hadn't done so well in the Original Sigil Episode, such as: Richer layouts, the opportunity to make the Player make better use of their space, not exaggerating with the Damaging Floors constantly preventing the passage of the player.
More different and innovative concepts, use of classic themes like Techbase and I really consider the positioning of enemies superior in some ways.
However, I agree that there are weird flaws here, the exaggeration of the Cyberdemons makes the maps break a little, forcing you to be aware of secrets most of the time, otherwise you fall behind in terms of ammunition.
