If they had actually taken the time to explain it I would have been much more OK with him returning.

(At the last minute saved by Lando and "the people"). Poe is definitely the worst character of this trilogy. Finn is a cool ex-Stormtrooper character, but also an enormous opportunity wasted.
Some movies are fine for turning off you brain. But not the biggest space opera of all time... I'm perfectly happy enjoying transformers, just watching nice tits and robot fights. I am not perfectly happy watching the entire original saga trampled into the dirt by the new trilogy.

Most major blockbuster franchises are made to make money. Disney's plan was to piggyback on the success of the originals with as little thinking and effort put into the new films as possible.

I mean that part didn’t bother me. But it honestly would have made sense for her to turn to the darks side after that since she always wanted to know about her family. Then Ben could come back to help her and discover her fall, avenge her and complete his rise.
I don't believe for a second that the plan all along was to bring back Palpatine. Rian Johnson blindsided everyone by killing off Snoke. Bringing back Palpatine was desperation. The thing to do would have been to bring back Snoke and have it revealed that he was actually Darth Plagueis. What's sad is these people are incapable of realizing that they have destroyed the entire franchise. Or sadder yet, they do realize it and don't care.
Daniel Reid It does make me wonder how Rian managed to 'blindside everyone' by killing Snoke. I mean, wasn't ANYONE watching what Rian was doing? Were all the people involved in making the movie suddenly surprised with Snoke's death only after the cinema release? Everyone aside from Rian must have been asleep on the job to let him put the whole trilogy into such an awkward and untenable position.
Well, that film made Anakin's entire story arc irrelevant and rendered Luke's struggles, sacrifice and entire life pretty much worthless, no balance was achieved, the jedi were wiped out and never re-established, the emperor survived Anakin's noble self-sacrifice and turn back to the light-side to save Luke and by the end of the series there wasn't one Skywalker left alive - yet they called the film rise of skywalker - more like fall of the house of skywalker. Well done guys, I think Jar Jar deserves an Oscar for that one.

But palpatine even said himself that plagueis couldnt save himself from dying. I dont know the actual way that force ability works so maybe it makes sense but as a guy who doesnt read the comics or the books for a better understanding, this doesnt give a very satisfying answer.

Any explanation is better than no explanation tho. It's not the actual fact that palpatine survived that bothers people quite so much, although it seriously undermines some of the older movies, but the fact that the film decided to just gloss over this HUGE twist with nothing but a single sentence. I can ignore some of the more trivial problems that can hurt some of the other movies themes, but I can't ignore the internal issues this causes. You cannot create a villain out of nowhere with no explanation and expect it to work. They should've just covered it more thoroughly. Maybe a flashback of him being saved right before the explosion on the second deathstar or literally anything. Any explanation is better than no explanation

Palpatine is literally only in this movie because Rian killed Snoke. That's why it can't work or make sense, canonical, theatrically, thematically or in any other sense. Also one of the reasons I'm boycotting.
Oh I'm sure it would have been another forgettable Jar Jar experience even if Snoke was still alive. I don't even remember what happened in TFA other than the stupid parts. Rather hard to forget Han Solo's stupid look on his face after being stabbed then his boy somehow being perfectly fine after being shot in the stomach. That's after Jar Jar hyped up Chewie's bowcaster into being a super gun that was sending stormtroopers flying so that tells you how much he pays attention to detail.

And as the video author said in previous video, it just shows how great this trilogy would be if JJ had the chance to make all three of them in a consistent way...
TROS actually WAS fixable, even with the disaster of TLJ. First they should have never had all those stupid MacGuffin searches. Then... They only needed to use Lucas' version of the finale, where Kylo & Rey kill Palps' physical body, and Anakin in his Force Ghost form destroys Palp's spirit forever. Problem is, JJ, KK & Iger are too incompetent to choose George's end of TROS. What a waste.

I hate how Palpatine turned into a bland super villain. I hate how they didn't explain how Palpatine came back. I hate how Ben wasn't a force ghost at the end with Leia and Luke. I hate how Rey considers herself a Skywalker. I hate how apparently every force user knows how to save dying or dead people, but Anakin the freaking chosen one couldn't save his wife. I did enjoy watching Rey struggle with the dark side, but that should have been seen in episode 7 and 8 already. I loved how the Haldo maneuver was explained to be basically pure luck 1 in a million chance it worked. A few other things i really enjoyed, but my favorite part is this train wreck is over, and Disney is hopefully done shitting on characters we love. Edit: didn't expect my comment to blow up like this, but im glad im not the only SW fan who feels this way. Im excited to see what Deborah Chow, Dave Filoni, and Jon Favreau can bring to the SW universe in the future.
It was never said any Force user could raise the dead. It was always a very rare ability, as explained in Legends. Anakin was only the Chosen One because of his destiny, it doesn't mean he's going to get all the Force Powers. Moreover, rare powers are often tied to specific people. Resurrection was never something Anakin would have had. You could argue Palpatine could have taught him how to use it but it's established he is a dick and merely used the possibility to manipulate Anakin to do what he wanted.

Barely any, the overall story is all over the place and they used palpatine as a villain because he was so well done in the prequels and then removed his actual way of doing things: manipulation not building a giant fleet.
Trilogy is total trash, nothing fixes it. Star Wars is forever tarnished by the Kennedy betrayal, the Abrams recycling, and the Johnson incompetent arrogance. Their failure is complete.
Hopefully the Reymake trilogy gets de-cannonized. Its just the original trilogy again but with Rey slapped into it, so there isn't anything of worth that we would lose if it was non-cannon. In a more just world this trilogy would have failed so spectacularly that they actually gave up the rights back to Lucas himself, and the EU is reinstated. Like it never happened.

When I first watched that preview clip, where Palpatine revealed that he was the voice in Ben’s head, I thought it was a sloppy way to patch the trilogy, but I was open to see how it’d pan out in practice. Now, I’m just baffled. The movie includes no explanations and a nonsensical plan. Also, side bar: the new Chewbacca (Jonas Suotamo) nailed his performance. When he grieves for Leia, you can really feel his anguish.

She didn't even know while they were filming the movie that contained that bit of information. She's said not knowing anything about her character made it tough to play the role. In other words, even Daisy Ridley thinks Rey is a bad character because she's a complete cipher we hardly know anything about.

I'm sorry guys but if JJ had any idea for Snoke's backstory, he would have told it in The Force Awakens. Yet he did, because he didn't have it. Snoke was just a new Emperor and that's it. Just like he didn't feel there was a need to explain why the republic was suddenly ruined just 30 years after the fall of Empire. I think everyone needs to start accepting the fact that JJ Abrams just isn't that good of a writer.

Not to defend Jar Jar Abrams, but it would have been foolish for him to reveal his long term plans for Snoke in the first movie. That's something that should have been revealed slowly over the entire trilogy. Dumping everything up front in the first film would have been a colossal mistake. But it's all academic anyway since Round Head Rian Johnson took a bantha-sized dump on whatever story elements Jar Jar might have set up. As far as I'm concerned, both directors are grossly incompetent storytellers and should be thrown down a deep, dark well for their abuse of the franchise.

I could see a future fanedit where someone could edit in that line from ROTS when Kylo meets Palpatine. Would work alot better and explain why he had to be completely disintegrated.

The EU is loaded with great stories and characters that could have been used to establish a three film arc that could easily be continued in further installments. There's no way they paid that much money for the franchise just to put out three movies.
Spoilers: Not enough people are talking about how this movie is literally dark empire. Seemingly through clones and essence transfer, sidious actually survived, ultimately making vader’s sacrifice meaningless, and now he’s trying to convert the main good guy to his side as a replacement for vader, comes close, but ends up failing as two force users with a close bond kill him for good after his speech with the message of being the embodiment of the darkside by turning his own powers that were previously destroying a large rebel fleet against him, making him kill himself. It’s literally the same thing
I wouldn't say Anikin's sacrifice was meaningless in both canon and legends because the fact that he saved his son and turned from the Dark side was the most important part of his story. His story main point was never about killing palp or balancing the force so much but showing that even the most evil people can be redeemed and forgiven. You have to view Anikin's story as a classic redemption story. But yeah Episode 9 is Dark empire just without Luke as the main character.
Palpatine wants Rey to strike him down, so that his spirit can take controll of her. Rey kills Palpatine. ... so why did he not finish his plan then? o0 It doesn't matter what Jar Jar tries to pull here and misdirect the viewer and try to make them forget. Rey kills Palpatine, so he should take control of her and win ... . Don't go and tell me it has to be with a light saber, because that would literally make no difference. And if he knew he was no longer able to have his spirit control a *weakend* Rey, when then did he not just stop shooting lightning? The whole finale makes not sense at all.
Is it like game of throne s8 ? Where for the characters in universe and a lot of the viewers, it's bran on the throne "yeah good guys won" But if you think about it, the good characters that won isn't really himself, he could be slowly or totally possesed (bran by the conciouness of the children of the forest/3eye raven, rey by palps) Which give another interpretation, where the bad guys could have won too, but it's as ambiguous as the ending of "the thing"

In the New Canon, Palpatine had a contingency plan to destroy the Empire in case he ever died. What exactly was the point of doing that if he planned on returning back from the dead?

At least when Hasbro came up with their version to create a massive backstory for the Transformers and compiled it into something called the Binder of Revelation, they clearly put a lot of time, effort and imagination into it. But then most of the writers for the various media of that time (e.g. Transformers Prime, Rescue Bots, the novels) just went, "Nah, screw that. Who wants to be tied down by some big continuity?"

IMO, stating that Palpatine's return was the plan from the beginning is so much worse than stating that you had no plan. That means that you had a plan and couldn't pull it off, regardless of budget. When Lucas owned the franchise, at least you had the creator of the story steering the ship. This was a part of him. Lucas made some judgement errors in movie making, but he's a great storyteller. Abrams is not a great storyteller IMO. Visually he makes good stuff but his projects have never, imo, told great stories. Lost was great in the beginning, but by the end I was thinking "WTF was that?" Johnson is probably better storyteller over all, but his attempt to make something interesting after Force Awakens was difficult, kind of like making a sandwich out of random leftovers in the fridge. Kennedy didn't seem to have a real grasp on the story she took control of. Here's my take on a more interesting final trilogy: Ep VII: Luke tries to rebuild Jedi order (take cues from story told in Last Jedi). He assembles Padawans for training, his nephew Ben being star student. However, Ben is aloof and unfocused (like his Uncle and Grandfather, who he becomes obsessed with). Ben's training is troubled. Ben is dead set on the image of Vader as his Grandfather, Luke tries to help him see Anakin (insert guidance from Obi Wan,Yoda, Anakin, Qui Gon force ghosts) exacerbated by the estranged relationship of his parents (Han is largely absent). Meanwhile, we get to see how the remnants of the Empire work to morph into the First Order (instead of "here's the Empire 2.0" we got in Force Awakens, this time with more red stuff and a Death Planet instead of Death Star.) Leia senses trouble with Ben, tries to council him to no avail. Then we find Rey (probably Leia finds her). Leia brings Rey to Luke for training (Leia can sense the force in Rey). She trains well, Ben becomes jealous and runs away. Han comes into the story after Luke/Leia ask for his help finding Ben. First Order grows. Ep VIII: Rey continues to train and get skilled (gets rid of her as a Mary Sue). This is probably where I'd introduce Finn. Ben runs into dark side influence (maybe Palpatine from beyond grave, but I'll never be ok with Palpatine being alive as it ruins the dramatic action of Return of the Jedi. I think a better route is to keep Snoke but have him created out of the dark side of force from Palapatine's, referred to as Sidious, and Plagueis' energy, or something). He seduces Ben and calls him Kylo Ren. Ben gets to fulfill his fantasy of being Vader. First Order grows more. Kylo Ren kills Padawans (or maybe converts some to the Knights of Ren) , Luke sacrifices himself to save Rey. Han goes to talk some sense to Ben, Ben kills him. Chewie goes ape on the knights. Rey and Leia are now the "new hope". Rey's linage is revealed (I still think somehow related to Obi Wan is my favorite). Ep IX: Ben lures Rey to Snoke (Snoke's orders). First Order occupies the Republic. Ben lives in Vader's old castle. There he is visited by Anakin Force Ghost, setting him straight about Vader. Ben goes back to Snoke to save Rey, kills Snoke but sacrifices himself. Leia, Finn, Rose, Poe heroically save the Republic from the First order (No Death Starish things please). Leia dies in the process (big sad funeral). Rey is visited by pantheon of force ghosts (or maybe just Luke) where the meaning of force balance is explained. There is no more Jedi, no more Sith. A more direct access to the will of the Force is given to Rey. She is charged with shepherding the galaxy toward that balance. Chewie and Lando fly the Falcon off into the sunset. Then the Ewoks throw a party!

The thing that stuck out to me the most about Palpatine was the fact he said he was "all the sith" cus you know the Sith are so well know for sharing their power.
To me it made more sense then what Rey said. And the reason is that ever since the rule of two has been established the Sith apprentice had to become more powerful than his/her master. So I saw what he said as I have the power of all the Sith before me cause each new Sith Lord was/had to be more powerful than the last.
It really doesn’t. Wait til you come around to thinking about snoke in the throne room and how that was palpatine the whole time. He didn’t have any idea who rey was in that moment but he had this whole master plan from the beginning about using her and Kylo.??
I love that you point out how all these questions are being left for good writers down the road to fix and explain. My question is why those writers werent in charge to begin with.
Everything is different from RotJ. In RotJ, Vader redeemed himself by killing Palp. He basically apologized to Luke and expressed his love for his son and daughter before death. But in TRoS, nothing Vader did matters because it turns out Vader didn't actually kill Palp because Palp is still alive. The entire Lucas storyline, Ep 1 thru 6, became inconsequential because it was about the rise, fall, and rise of Anakin Skywalker and how LOVE redeemed him. But since Palp lived, Vader's story doesn't matter at all. Total BS from Disney. In the end, instead of an actual Skywalker being the hero, it turns out the real hero is a Palpatine...all she did was change her name. In the end, a Palpatine wins, not a Skywalker. F*** Disney.
you know what if disney just set their trilogy in a distant future where all the old heroes died then as fans we would embrace these one off side story movies like solo rogue one kenobi and maybe even a palpatine movie because we know its the last time we would see these characters on screen alive and we would be hyped for them instead of groaning...they really should of thought about that if they wanted to do side story movies....like bro we just saw han die we don't need a movie on him..no ones in the mood for that
And now they don't care cause of the $$$. When they started/selected they were so hyped. Who wouldn't. Now that they are established in a big budget trilogy, they got paid and life moves on for them. But it is sad as a movie there is zero attachment to these characters.
This movie is basically the equivalent of if after Frodo throws the one ring in the fires of Mordor to destroy it, years later we learn that it actually got caught on a rock or something on the way down and was never actually destroyed and now someone completely unrelated the Baggins' has to come in and complete the original plot.
Completely failed for me. The thought of him surviving two major events. Like his body exploding and then a double whammy with the Death Star 2 blowing up, makes me sick.
Are we really supposed to believe that Palpatine was stupid enough to get killed by his own lightning? When last time getting hit by it, getting thrown down, and having a Death Star exploded on him didn't do the trick. Let's face it. It's more than likely that everything in this movie went just about exactly as he planned. Especially since it seems like these promising young Jedi always go down the wrong road sooner or later.

If he stopped the Lightning, he would’ve been chopped up by Rey. It makes sense. Also you could argue that he DID stop shooting the lightning and was just deflecting the lightning, that Rey deflected, back at Rey. This lead to the lightning bouncing back and forth between Sidious and the sabers until he died.
Max Max He did an interview in 2017 stating it again, that Anakin was the Chosen One. Being that SW Rebels people were losing their crap cause Dave Filoni created an episode where Obi Wan tells Maul that Luke is the Chosen One. And people were confused and concerned and Lucas clarified (also Filoni) that Anakin is the Chosen One, inspired by Luke. And that he did fulfill the prophecy. That was right before Ep 8 came out. So if he changed his mind, I can’t find that story.
If ROS was an apology letter from JJ to the fans, I accept. That said, taken together, the discombobulated Disney Trilogy is now just fan fiction to me. It was really mostly the story and the details that went wrong, they're a mess. But to think, had Lucas written the story, perhaps with Filoni or Favreau, and someone else of caliber like R Zemeckis or J Logan or even L Kasdan (under Lucas) written the screenplay, and someone else of caliber like JJ or P Jenkins directed... Where would we be? The formula of success for Star Wars starts with a story that is consistent with the Galaxy that George created. I never got there with these movies. (See Luke giving up hope, isolated from his friends, and throwing his dad's lightsaber in the ocean for an example)

@@InfernosReaper The only way you can enjoy the sequel trilogy is if you aren't invested enough in the previous SW films and turned your brain off to ignore the glaring plot holes throughout. A lot of the plot holes in TROS came about from JJ trying to undo TLJ so it's not just a continuity issue with the rest of the series either. The sequel trilogy just falls apart horribly on its own with its nonsensical plot and Mary Sue characters.
This whole movie played like the end of Harry Potter - everything was accomplished with magic, and the ending was a fireworks duel between the big baddie and the hero.

Like so many lore breaking ideas, the 'Holdo manoeuvre' could have been explained far more creatively had they really put their minds to it. For example, Holdo's ship had a secret untested feature, that was adapted from something the Empire had been developing... And for example, her navi-computer had locked on to the specific coordinates for the enemy ship's Ion engine fusion reactors, that had been hacked previously? Hence on hyperdrive reentry she caused a chain reaction that caused all that destruction? That was just made up in 5 seconds flat, and they've had a number of years to carefully consider this.

why try when you are guaranteed to make 950 million now a days with this title franchise worldwide no matter what as long as its got the budget and characters people care about and isn't a stand alone movie...like you can throw shit up on the screen and it makes 1.8 billion like force awakens did just because of hype and nostalgia....you don't make that kind of money from new people watching that were not fans before..they don't suddenly watch it cause they want to understand this world and watch 6 other films first.....that number comes from the fanboys and people rewatching the film like 5 times in theatres cause they love it so much...I ask after one viewing how anyone can enjoy these disney films..they bore me on first watch ...why spend 100 dollars to rewatch this 6 times?

They should have at least used the Legends explanation for Palpatine's return, that explanation being that he made multiple clones of himself prior to his death and transferred his essence in one of them. But then again, it would be unclear why he had to wait 31 years before returning...
The way I see it, Star Wars is 6 movies (1-6), Disney Star Wars is 5 movies (Their trilogy, Rogue One and Solo) I consider them two seperate series. Then it makes sense. One is legit, the other is fan fiction. Happy holidays !
Rogue One is not fan fiction though. It's a decent movie and it fits perfectly with the original trilogy in my opinion. It's portrayed as a prologue to New Hope after all.
This is the Palpatine saga. It is the redemption of the Palpatine lineage and disintegration of the Skywalker lineage. Palpatine lineage kills off the skywalker line and takes over their name. Wtf. Episodes 1-9 is now all about Palpatine. I’m not ok with that. I would be happy to watch a Palpatine saga where there is a redemption story, but not at the expense of the skywalkers.

How is it Palpatine doesn't know they are a "diad" when the force connection between Rey and Ben was said to be caused by Snoke connecting the two. When Snoke is supposed to be Plapatine's clone or puppet, that's yet another plot hole.
Yes the two go hand in hand, it should have had Anakin come back as force ghost and help in some way Rey in her battle against the emperor. The whole thing is a inconsistent mess.
They even had that sweet concept art of a creepy half-vader-half-anakin force ghost that would have been cool af to see done well. Here's a scenario: Rey and Kylo somehow manage to defeat Sidious through teamwork and their bond and only _just_ manage to kill him, but they're exhausted. Palpatine's big evil Sith force ghost comes out, showing how he managed to survive after the Death Star got blown up and the two have no chance against this. Then Rey and Kylo together summon the jedi ghosts led by the creepy anakin one and they together wipe out Sidious' spirit form. It's not a great ending, i admit, but then i made this up in 2 minutes and i wasn't paid $5M for it.
Fan fiction didn't get paid like this and made a way better job, not only that look at the prior 2012 games, those guys made such incredible games and didn't get money near this Ryan shit and JarJar turd.

(At the last minute saved by Lando and "the people"). Poe is definitely the worst character of this trilogy. Finn is a cool ex-Stormtrooper character, but also an enormous opportunity wasted.

I don't believe for a second that the plan all along was to bring back Palpatine. Rian Johnson blindsided everyone by killing off Snoke. Bringing back Palpatine was desperation. The thing to do would have been to bring back Snoke and have it revealed that he was actually Darth Plagueis. What's sad is these people are incapable of realizing that they have destroyed the entire franchise. Or sadder yet, they do realize it and don't care.

Well, that film made Anakin's entire story arc irrelevant and rendered Luke's struggles, sacrifice and entire life pretty much worthless, no balance was achieved, the jedi were wiped out and never re-established, the emperor survived Anakin's noble self-sacrifice and turn back to the light-side to save Luke and by the end of the series there wasn't one Skywalker left alive - yet they called the film rise of skywalker - more like fall of the house of skywalker. Well done guys, I think Jar Jar deserves an Oscar for that one.
More like the Rise of Palpatine. All in all, if Rey somehow did reform a Jedi Order it would be through a Palpatine by blood. Ironic that is...

Maybe they were just assuming fans would connect that monologue Palpatine gives to Anakin about Plagueis learning to cheat death was a satisfying enough answer to how he survived. I don't know. What I do know is that this trilogy has been a monumental disappointment.

I agree with Travis. Why would we need any explanation? Palpatine spent an entire movie convincing Anakin he could cheat death / bring people back to life.
Any explanation is better than no explanation tho. It's not the actual fact that palpatine survived that bothers people quite so much, although it seriously undermines some of the older movies, but the fact that the film decided to just gloss over this HUGE twist with nothing but a single sentence. I can ignore some of the more trivial problems that can hurt some of the other movies themes, but I can't ignore the internal issues this causes. You cannot create a villain out of nowhere with no explanation and expect it to work. They should've just covered it more thoroughly. Maybe a flashback of him being saved right before the explosion on the second deathstar or literally anything. Any explanation is better than no explanation
JJ Abrams is the Ultimate "One-Upper". He takes someones great idea and one-ups it. My star destroyer is bigger than yours, my Death Star is bigger than yours. Darth Vader is your father, oh yeah well Palpatine is my grandfather. Your the chosen one, oh no you're not, I am the chosen one. No original plots or anything to add to the saga. Its so sad, Disney had such a great opportunity and they have ruined Star Wars forever.

Oh I'm sure it would have been another forgettable Jar Jar experience even if Snoke was still alive. I don't even remember what happened in TFA other than the stupid parts. Rather hard to forget Han Solo's stupid look on his face after being stabbed then his boy somehow being perfectly fine after being shot in the stomach. That's after Jar Jar hyped up Chewie's bowcaster into being a super gun that was sending stormtroopers flying so that tells you how much he pays attention to detail.

I did enjoy watching Rey struggle with the dark side, but that should have been seen in episode 7 and 8 already.
I loved how the Haldo maneuver was explained to be basically pure luck 1 in a million chance it worked.
A few other things i really enjoyed, but my favorite part is this train wreck is over, and Disney is hopefully done shitting on characters we love.

It was never said any Force user could raise the dead. It was always a very rare ability, as explained in Legends. Anakin was only the Chosen One because of his destiny, it doesn't mean he's going to get all the Force Powers. Moreover, rare powers are often tied to specific people. Resurrection was never something Anakin would have had. You could argue Palpatine could have taught him how to use it but it's established he is a dick and merely used the possibility to manipulate Anakin to do what he wanted.

Barely any, the overall story is all over the place and they used palpatine as a villain because he was so well done in the prequels and then removed his actual way of doing things: manipulation not building a giant fleet.

Hopefully the Reymake trilogy gets de-cannonized. Its just the original trilogy again but with Rey slapped into it, so there isn't anything of worth that we would lose if it was non-cannon. In a more just world this trilogy would have failed so spectacularly that they actually gave up the rights back to Lucas himself, and the EU is reinstated. Like it never happened.

When I first watched that preview clip, where Palpatine revealed that he was the voice in Ben’s head, I thought it was a sloppy way to patch the trilogy, but I was open to see how it’d pan out in practice. Now, I’m just baffled. The movie includes no explanations and a nonsensical plan.
Also, side bar: the new Chewbacca (Jonas Suotamo) nailed his performance. When he grieves for Leia, you can really feel his anguish.

I find it curious that everyone keeps saying Rian Johnson ruined JJ's vision for Snoke. I'm sorry guys but if JJ had any idea for Snoke's backstory, he would have told it in The Force Awakens. Yet he did, because he didn't have it. Snoke was just a new Emperor and that's it. Just like he didn't feel there was a need to explain why the republic was suddenly ruined just 30 years after the fall of Empire.
I think everyone needs to start accepting the fact that JJ Abrams just isn't that good of a writer.

Not to defend Jar Jar Abrams, but it would have been foolish for him to reveal his long term plans for Snoke in the first movie. That's something that should have been revealed slowly over the entire trilogy. Dumping everything up front in the first film would have been a colossal mistake. But it's all academic anyway since Round Head Rian Johnson took a bantha-sized dump on whatever story elements Jar Jar might have set up. As far as I'm concerned, both directors are grossly incompetent storytellers and should be thrown down a deep, dark well for their abuse of the franchise.

The EU is loaded with great stories and characters that could have been used to establish a three film arc that could easily be continued in further installments. Not enough people are talking about how this movie is literally dark empire. Seemingly through clones and essence transfer, sidious actually survived, ultimately making vader’s sacrifice meaningless, and now he’s trying to convert the main good guy to his side as a replacement for vader, comes close, but ends up failing as two force users with a close bond kill him for good after his speech with the message of being the embodiment of the darkside by turning his own powers that were previously destroying a large rebel fleet against him, making him kill himself. It’s literally the same thing
I wouldn't say Anikin's sacrifice was meaningless in both canon and legends because the fact that he saved his son and turned from the Dark side was the most important part of his story. His story main point was never about killing palp or balancing the force so much but showing that even the most evil people can be redeemed and forgiven. You have to view Anikin's story as a classic redemption story. But yeah Episode 9 is Dark empire just without Luke as the main character.

But if you think about it, the good characters that won isn't really himself, he could be slowly or totally possesed (bran by the conciouness of the children of the forest/3eye raven, rey by palps)
Which give another interpretation, where the bad guys could have won too, but it's as ambiguous as the ending of "the thing"

@@manuxx3543 I honestly dont think so. GRR Martin has said the ending is bittersweet and used Lord ofthe Rings as an example of what he means by bittersweet. Having a bad guy be in charge at the end would not be bittersweet. Having no one win could be though.
In the New Canon, Palpatine had a contingency plan to destroy the Empire in case he ever died. What exactly was the point of doing that if he planned on returning back from the dead?
@Greg Elchert I know, right? At least when Hasbro came up with their version to create a massive backstory for the Transformers and compiled it into something called the Binder of Revelation, they clearly put a lot of time, effort and imagination into it.
But then most of the writers for the various media of that time (e.g. Transformers Prime, Rescue Bots, the novels) just went, "Nah, screw that. Who wants to be tied down by some big continuity?"

When Snoke was torturing Rey, Palpatine's theme did play. Doubt that is relevant, but, just pointing it out.
Makes sense. He is a discount Palpatine. They couldn’t have gone with someone like Thrawn or something. Nope. They had to simply rehash what better people have already made
Yeah, and Palpatine is nowhere to be mentioned in the 7th and 8th episodes, and Snoke should have his own theme and have the motive to destroy the Galaxy as an antithesis of Palpatine ruling it.
IMO, stating that Palpatine's return was the plan from the beginning is so much worse than stating that you had no plan. That means that you had a plan and couldn't pull it off, regardless of budget. When Lucas owned the franchise, at least you had the creator of the story steering the ship. This was a part of him. Lucas made some judgement errors in movie making, but he's a great storyteller. Abrams is not a great storyteller IMO. Visually he makes good stuff but his projects have never, imo, told great stories.
Lost was great in the beginning, but by the end I was thinking "WTF was that?"
Johnson is probably better storyteller over all, but his attempt to make something interesting after Force Awakens was difficult, kind of like making a sandwich out of random leftovers in the fridge.
Kennedy didn't seem to have a real grasp on the story she took control of.
Here's my take on a more interesting final trilogy:
Ep VII: Luke tries to rebuild Jedi order (take cues from story told in Last Jedi). He assembles Padawans for training, his nephew Ben being star student. However, Ben is aloof and unfocused (like his Uncle and Grandfather, who he becomes obsessed with). Ben's training is troubled. Ben is dead set on the image of Vader as his Grandfather, Luke tries to help him see Anakin (insert guidance from Obi Wan,Yoda, Anakin, Qui Gon force ghosts) exacerbated by the estranged relationship of his parents (Han is largely absent). Meanwhile, we get to see how the remnants of the Empire work to morph into the First Order (instead of "here's the Empire 2.0" we got in Force Awakens, this time with more red stuff and a Death Planet instead of Death Star.) Leia senses trouble with Ben, tries to council him to no avail. Then we find Rey (probably Leia finds her). Leia brings Rey to Luke for training (Leia can sense the force in Rey). She trains well, Ben becomes jealous and runs away. Han comes into the story after Luke/Leia ask for his help finding Ben. First Order grows.
Ep VIII: Rey continues to train and get skilled (gets rid of her as a Mary Sue). This is probably where I'd introduce Finn. Ben runs into dark side influence (maybe Palpatine from beyond grave, but I'll never be ok with Palpatine being alive as it ruins the dramatic action of Return of the Jedi. I think a better route is to keep Snoke but have him created out of the dark side of force from Palapatine's, referred to as Sidious, and Plagueis' energy, or something). He seduces Ben and calls him Kylo Ren. Ben gets to fulfill his fantasy of being Vader. First Order grows more. Kylo Ren kills Padawans (or maybe converts some to the Knights of Ren) , Luke sacrifices himself to save Rey. Han goes to talk some sense to Ben, Ben kills him. Chewie goes ape on the knights. Rey and Leia are now the "new hope". Rey's linage is revealed (I still think somehow related to Obi Wan is my favorite).
Ep IX: Ben lures Rey to Snoke (Snoke's orders). First Order occupies the Republic. Ben lives in Vader's old castle. There he is visited by Anakin Force Ghost, setting him straight about Vader. Ben goes back to Snoke to save Rey, kills Snoke but sacrifices himself. Leia, Finn, Rose, Poe heroically save the Republic from the First order (No Death Starish things please). Leia dies in the process (big sad funeral). Rey is visited by pantheon of force ghosts (or maybe just Luke) where the meaning of force balance is explained. There is no more Jedi, no more Sith. A more direct access to the will of the Force is given to Rey. She is charged with shepherding the galaxy toward that balance. Chewie and Lando fly the Falcon off into the sunset.
Then the Ewoks throw a party!

The thing that stuck out to me the most about Palpatine was the fact he said he was "all the sith" cus you know the Sith are so well know for sharing their power.
To me it made more sense then what Rey said. And the reason is that ever since the rule of two has been established the Sith apprentice had to become more powerful than his/her master. So I saw what he said as I have the power of all the Sith before me cause each new Sith Lord was/had to be more powerful than the last.

This entire trilogy was completely pointless. Nothing is different now from how things were at the end of Return of the Jedi.
Everything is different from RotJ. In RotJ, Vader redeemed himself by killing Palp. He basically apologized to Luke and expressed his love for his son and daughter before death. But in TRoS, nothing Vader did matters because it turns out Vader didn't actually kill Palp because Palp is still alive. The entire Lucas storyline, Ep 1 thru 6, became inconsequential because it was about the rise, fall, and rise of Anakin Skywalker and how LOVE redeemed him. But since Palp lived, Vader's story doesn't matter at all. Total BS from Disney. In the end, instead of an actual Skywalker being the hero, it turns out the real hero is a Palpatine...all she did was change her name. In the end, a Palpatine wins, not a Skywalker. F*** Disney.

The sad thing is that we treated these sequal trilogy characters with far more respect than their creators ever did.
And now they don't care cause of the $$$. When they started/selected they were so hyped. Who wouldn't. Now that they are established in a big budget trilogy, they got paid and life moves on for them. But it is sad as a movie there is zero attachment to these characters.

This movie is basically the equivalent of if after Frodo throws the one ring in the fires of Mordor to destroy it, years later we learn that it actually got caught on a rock or something on the way down and was never actually destroyed and now someone completely unrelated the Baggins' has to come in and complete the original plot.
Completely failed for me. The thought of him surviving two major events. Like his body exploding and then a double whammy with the Death Star 2 blowing up, makes me sick.

When last time getting hit by it, getting thrown down, and having a Death Star exploded on him didn't do the trick. Let's face it. If he stopped the Lightning, he would’ve been chopped up by Rey. It makes sense.
Also you could argue that he DID stop shooting the lightning and was just deflecting the lightning, that Rey deflected, back at Rey. This lead to the lightning bouncing back and forth between Sidious and the sabers until he died.
Lucas has also stated in a recent interview that Sidious is 100% DEAD!!!!!
That was from 2013 and he has a history of changing his mind.

He did an interview in 2017 stating it again, that Anakin was the Chosen One. Being that SW Rebels people were losing their crap cause Dave Filoni created an episode where Obi Wan tells Maul that Luke is the Chosen One.
And people were confused and concerned and Lucas clarified (also Filoni) that Anakin is the Chosen One, inspired by Luke.
And that he did fulfill the prophecy. That was right before Ep 8 came out.
So if he changed his mind, I can’t find that story.
He did plan when he was doing his outlines of his ST back in the 80’s that Palpatine was to come back just not really in the flesh.
Maybe that's why he wasn't at the premier... he didn't want to see him alive again.
All in all, this movie can't even fill its own plot holes, let alone keeping the consistency of the whole saga.

If ROS was an apology letter from JJ to the fans, I accept. That said, taken together, the discombobulated Disney Trilogy is now just fan fiction to me. It was really mostly the story and the details that went wrong, they're a mess.
But to think, had Lucas written the story, perhaps with Filoni or Favreau, and someone else of caliber like R Zemeckis or J Logan or even L Kasdan (under Lucas) written the screenplay, and someone else of caliber like JJ or P Jenkins directed... Where would we be?
The formula of success for Star Wars starts with a story that is consistent with the Galaxy that George created. I never got there with these movies. (See Luke giving up hope, isolated from his friends, and throwing his dad's lightsaber in the ocean for an example)

A lot of the plot holes in TROS came about from JJ trying to undo TLJ so it's not just a continuity issue with the rest of the series either. The sequel trilogy just falls apart horribly on its own with its nonsensical plot and Mary Sue characters.

Like so many lore breaking ideas, the 'Holdo manoeuvre' could have been explained far more creatively had they really put their minds to it. For example, Holdo's ship had a secret untested feature, that was adapted from something the Empire had been developing...
And for example, her navi-computer had locked on to the specific coordinates for the enemy ship's Ion engine fusion reactors, that had been hacked previously? Hence on hyperdrive reentry she caused a chain reaction that caused all that destruction? That was just made up in 5 seconds flat, and they've had a number of years to carefully consider this.

why try when you are guaranteed to make 950 million now a days with this title franchise worldwide no matter what as long as its got the budget and characters people care about and isn't a stand alone movie...like you can throw shit up on the screen and it makes 1.8 billion like force awakens did just because of hype and nostalgia....you don't make that kind of money from new people watching that were not fans before..they don't suddenly watch it cause they want to understand this world and watch 6 other films first.....that number comes from the fanboys and people rewatching the film like 5 times in theatres cause they love it so much...I ask after one viewing how anyone can enjoy these disney films..they bore me on first watch ...why spend 100 dollars to rewatch this 6 times?

They should have at least used the Legends explanation for Palpatine's return, that explanation being that he made multiple clones of himself prior to his death and transferred his essence in one of them. But then again, it would be unclear why he had to wait 31 years before returning...

The way I see it, Star Wars is 6 movies (1-6), Disney Star Wars is 5 movies (Their trilogy, Rogue One and Solo) I consider them two seperate series. Then it makes sense. One is legit, the other is fan fiction. Happy holidays !

To me, Rogue One fits in pretty well with the Original Trilogy.
Rogue One is not fan fiction though. It's a decent movie and it fits perfectly with the original trilogy in my opinion. It's portrayed as a prologue to New Hope after all.
This is the Palpatine saga. It is the redemption of the Palpatine lineage and disintegration of the Skywalker lineage. Palpatine lineage kills off the skywalker line and takes over their name. Wtf. Episodes 1-9 is now all about Palpatine. I’m not ok with that. I would be happy to watch a Palpatine saga where there is a redemption story, but not at the expense of the skywalkers.
Episode 1-6 is Skywalker's saga, not Palpatine's.

How is it Palpatine doesn't know they are a "diad" when the force connection between Rey and Ben was said to be caused by Snoke connecting the two. When Snoke is supposed to be Plapatine's clone or puppet, that's yet another plot hole.
There are less holes there were dug in the movie “Holes” than there are plot holes in one of these stupid movies.
There's more hole than plot. Why does Palpatine want anyone's body when he can clone people? Just clone Rey and be done with it.
The ending needed Anakin emerging from the force to take down Palpatine again.
Yes the two go hand in hand, it should have had Anakin come back as force ghost and help in some way Rey in her battle against the emperor. The whole thing is a inconsistent mess.
They even had that sweet concept art of a creepy half-vader-half-anakin force ghost that would have been cool af to see done well. Here's a scenario:
Rey and Kylo somehow manage to defeat Sidious through teamwork and their bond and only _just_ manage to kill him, but they're exhausted. Palpatine's big evil Sith force ghost comes out, showing how he managed to survive after the Death Star got blown up and the two have no chance against this. Then Rey and Kylo together summon the jedi ghosts led by the creepy anakin one and they together wipe out Sidious' spirit form.
It's not a great ending, i admit, but then i made this up in 2 minutes and i wasn't paid $5M for it.
They could have made a really cool scene with a fight on the Astral plane
but they went with this crap instead
