  • Today we do a review and tasting of Rebecca Creek Whiskey.

    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    Never drank whiskey in my life, but I now know the difference between the different types of whiskey, the main regions where it's produced and the main characteristics that it entails, the rich history of whiskey and a lot more! I just fell in love with your channel. Love the reviews, the banter, the awesome community and the true passion you have for whiskey. Will definitely soon invest in my first bottles! Keep up the amazing work and may the whiskey vault never run dry!

      knob creek or bulleit are two solid bourbons. wild turkey 81 or 101 are two others. cant go wrong with JD either. or maybe crown royal as a first, it is super smooth and friendly.

    its not called a bourbon because it is a blended whiskey. says on the back 21% grain neutral spirit

    Recently turned 40, started drinking whisk(e)y (part of my midlife crisis). Found your channel to figure out what direction in whiskey to explore. I have watched most of your reviews over the past couple of weeks, and very have enjoyed them.
    YOU'RE NOT HELPING!!!! I want everything you gentleman review. Scotch, dourbon, rye, blends, Irish. The good, bad and ugly, you guys simply have fun drinking. I know that I will simultaneously love and regret my next whiskey purchase.
    So thanks for nothing and keep delivering the great video!!!!

    Watching November 20, 2019. I visited Rebecca Creek Distillery in September 2019 and will be sharing my visit and doing a review of the "Rebecca Creek Fine Texas Whiskey" in 2020 during Texas Whiskey Month. So, I am comparing notes. The distillery is a really cool place. They have great food vendors, they serve cocktails and have a stage for live music.

      He is not as short as I had expected. Rex has to be quite tall. Daniel is quite generous tho. I had a wonderful time joining in on the tasting. And the one thing that id like to not say so it does not make people think that they can just come and get it.

    So my first distillery tour in Wisconsin, it became apparent pretty early on that I knew more about whiskey than anyone else on the tour, including the guide. I just decided to sit back and enjoy the tasting, because if the rest of the crowd is asking questions like "Are you guys gonna start making scotch?", I'm just gonna look like a dick asking about their barrel char levels and how they decided on a flavor profile.
    The next one I went to, however, was fantastic, and our guide knew everything. I would say, just read the room, and if you think your question MIGHT get answered, go for it. If you KNOW it won't, just chill and take your own notes.

      Somewhat similar story in Michigan, but I was in a tiny tour, me and a few friends (who don't know much about whiskey and don't even like it -they only wanted to treat me to a tour) and one other guy and his wife who seemed to be in a similar situation.
      Everyone stayed pretty quiet throughout the whole tour until the guide (who was the head distiller who was maybe in his mid 20s?) thanked us for being the "simplest" and "easiest" group of tourists he's ever had which seemed kind of snobbish in its own right, so the other guy started with series of slightly snobbish questions and I joined in.
      The other guy asked about barrel charring and the distillation, which I feel asking about barrel charring is slightly snobbish because it has no bearing on the group, especially since that distillery doesn't age their whiskeys, and furthermore might have even less relevance since it's illegal to distill in Michigan anyway.
      I asked questions about water filtration systems (since our city has notoriously polluted rivers) and I saw a single quarter cask up ontop of a store room sitting in direct sunlight and questioned him about aging in the sunlight which he only said "Good eye!" and gave us a sample of the whisky. In the end, the guide seemed pretty happy we asked questions even though it felt like we were slightly provoked into it, and we even got some of their special aged batch.

    My resolve to NOT be a Pretentious Whiskey Snob was tested this weekend, when a new friend declared themselves a fan of whiskey. I asked what they liked, and the response was "Jameson [this was met with a nod of approval], Fireball, and Tennessee Honey [I really hope my face didn't betray me]". I replied with some version of "the best whiskey is the one you like drinking", and followed up with an offer to share some of my supply (starting with Weller). This is someone I'd like to hang out with more, so hopefully whiskey is one of many things we could enjoy together.

    I just went out to Rebecca Creek a couple of months ago and did a tasting. I walked out with a bottle of the Rebecca Creek Whiskey, but just a head-up: their "Texas Ranger" whiskey is VERY different. It's insanely sweet. I'm sure it'd be ok in the right cocktail, but I'd avoid drinking it straight unless you want to add a shot of insulin to your morning routine.

    • @FightStealDrink

    Live stream was awesome. I enjoyed a Glenfidich 15 with you. You all are making me realize bourbon deserves a second chance. My Bday is coming up in November and have a few friends coming for a scotch tasting. Someone suggested having some bourbon. If you had to pick one bourbon to fit into a scotch tasting, what would it be? (I've got all 5 regions covered with at least two bottles, and a Compass Box Hedonism, so its gotta be good).Oh, and Daniel, feel free to come by, so someone knows what the hell we are talking about!

    Now I can't confirm this, so I'd also like a Rebecca rep to clarify, but from what I've gathered it's a whiskey/vodka blend. I've never heard a ratio, but I've had more than a handful of people say it's a blend. So I'd take it with a grain of salt. Eventually I'll go on their distillery tour and found out.

    Hey guys, I'm attending a whiskey festival in Greece by the end of the month. The ticket price includes some masterclasses, workshop and also whiskey tastings (6 drinks). What are some whiskey's that are really good, but also quite unattainable in regards to their price? I mean if I'm going to mooch, I better mooch some whiskey's I can't try otherwise.

    • @tjay5837
      @tjay5837 7 років тому

      bmxriderforlife1234 have you tried some yourself? From a quick search I found the 20 year old to be considered the best. Would you agree ?

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому +1

      yes ive tried some the 15 year old i believe it is, not the 20 its one of the more entry level versions, its very nice, but also so stupidly hard to get that id say its better just to mooch it then pay second market prices.....though for actual retail prices theyre absolutely amazing.
      also i think the 23 year or 25 would probably be the best but the 25 is selling for 15k USD soooooo yeah fuck that with 15k i could get alot of whiskey. i will say this, apparently if you take two of the cheaper wl weller bourbons and mix them they are smoother and nicer then pappy van winkle though smoothness isnt the only characteristic to look for and pappy is anything but harsh.
      if you can get carribou crossing single barrel thats one of the best canadian whiskeys in the eyes of many people. theres also obviously too many scotchs to list but idk what kinda scotch you like and im more of a bourbon guy myself.
      but yeah if the chance for a pappy mooch comes up take it, the shits hard to get and stupidly inflated but its also really nice so no wonder why plus with the small batches and the theft of some of the whiskey its a little well known in the whiskey hobby so yeah everyone figured it must be amazing and started trying to get it liked it then it became impossible to get now its held up as a grail whiskey meaning people will try and sell them for stupid amounts of money and even fake them.
      id also say if the chance for gledfiddich 40 or 50 year old pops up take that lol its a 25k bottle, also some guy in my city stole one from a local liquor store(where i live the government owns the liquor stores) someone forget to lock the vintages case and he just walked up opened it casually took the bottle walked around and left after stashing it. however it should be noted in the states costco has their own brand of scotch thats 40 years old, the barrels apparently come from glenfiddich and are just barrels that dont have the exact perfect flavor profile, the whiskey is still amazing from what ive heard but its 700$ as opposed to multiple thousands. so there is that potential way of trying a whiskey made by glenfiddich thats that old. oh also their french made vodka is grey goose for half the price, they bought a grey goose factory and then just continued making it :P
      oh also if someone offers you to try a whiskey thats like super limited like only one bottling ever from the only barrel id go for it but it can be a double edged sword my buddy did it once and found a whiskey he absolutely loved but he couldnt ever get more of it. an example would be the toronto distillery co true single barrel whiskey its hickory casked, but yeah only one barrel made and they said they said they wouldnt do another due to the issues with charring the hickory cask. or like really old bottles that were made like say 25-100 years ago by distilleries that no longer exist. but yeah sorry for the rant short version too many to list but id say if pappy van winkle pops up go for it its nice stuff but not second hand market price nice. heres hoping they start making more of at least the entry level versions keep the 23 and 25 as the top end shit and let people go price jack those on the second hand market, but theres bottles that retail for like 50 that they are selling for 900-1k or more.....so yeah, at those prices id go get knob creeks entire selection along with bulleit some scotch elijah craig and buffalo trace and throw in a bottle of crown for some non whiskey drinkers and stock my bar. or go get a really really nice vintage bottle of something or a couple even.

    • @tjay5837
      @tjay5837 7 років тому

      bmxriderforlife1234 Well, you really got me interested in the Pappy Van winkle so that's one spot taken. I'm thinking of splitting my free drinks into one or two bourbons, one for each of the four regions of scotch and perhaps an Irish or Canadian one. One will be Pappy (thank you for that),one will definitely be a smokey Islay (smokey whiskies are some of my favourites / so far I'm leaning towards Bowmore 25) and the rest are up for grabs. I'll also consider the Glenfiddich as my choice of a Speyside, although it's lower price-range counterpart doesn't quite fit with my taste preferences.
      In any case, thanks bro 😉

    Hi guys. Thanks to putting me up to the world of whisky. I was looking for the perfect drink to pour on those cold winter nights sitting near a lit fireplace watching a movie with my girl. Thanks to you i found that the solution was waiting or me in my home bar the whole time. Said solution was Cardhu 15 years single Malt Scotch Whisky. Already tried the Glenfiddich 12 and fell in love with it. Could you please taste and review some Cardhu 12 or 15 for me please? If not for me do it for everyone out there looking to find a drink fit for the upcoming winter. Much love to you both.

    Just finished binge watching everything Whiskey Vault, you radically changed my view of whiskey.
    First exposure was 8 shots Jack Daniels, a light beer between each… it didn’t end well.
    Avoided Whiskey until
    Second Exposure: 3 shots Jameson (it was St. Patrick’s day) Several Irish car Bombs followed… it didn’t end well.
    My liquor cabinet hasn’t had a whiskey in it until I found your show, now McClelland’s Islay, Talisker 10, Bullet Rye, Makers Mark, Elijah Craig small batch, 4 roses single barrel… and it’s only been one month.
    Also, I’d like to state the obvious to the Mooch, remember your place. Daniel is the expert there to share his wealth of knowledge with us Whiskey soaked masses, Daniel is the cool one (even when he tells his dad jokes which we are all ashamed that we laugh at). The only reason they put you on the screen is your raw sex appeal. (And to occasionally to remind Daniel to talk about the Whiskey.)
    Keep up the good work you magnificent bastards, and May the Whiskey Vault never run dry!

I found it so funny to get a newsletter from you lads over in Austin, Texas, telling me a story of whisky which is located within walking distance from me!

    Hey guys...I need some advice. I got into whiskey about a year ago. I started off with common brands you can buy at every liquor store like a lagavulin 16, which is still one of my favourites. I don't know alot about whiskey...I'm still learning but I think I'm getting better. There is no dedicated whiskey store close to where I live so it makes things harder. I have to order whiskeys if I like to try new ones which is in some cases rather expensive and I'd like to taste a whiskey before I buy a bottle. I am asking for some advice on which whiskey I should try next. I'm not a huge fan of extremely peaty, smokey ones. For example, the 10 year aged Tallisker is too much for my liking. So far, the Lagavulin 16 is just about the max. amount of smoke I can take. I like it because the smoke doesn't stay for too long. I kinda like the sweeter ones with a hint of caramel, like the 12 year aged canadian club blend. I know that this one isn't an outstanding whiskey, but I like it. I also like a classic wild turkey 101. Thank you for any helpful response.

    Hey guys. I am a huge bourbon fan and just had Johnnie Walker Red (my first scotch) this past weekend and hated it. Is this a bad sign for scotch and me getting along?

    • @laurenspeterdevries5144
      @laurenspeterdevries5144 7 років тому +1

      Don't think so. The thing with scotch is that the flavor profile is really broad. This because of the different regions (speyside, low- and highlands, islands and islay) and different types (single malt, blended malt, blended scotch etc). Red label is a pretty cheap and blended whisky made for mixing with sodas and not for drinking neat.
      I would advice (as if that's worth anything ;p) to start with scotch trying a single malt like a glenfiddich, macallan, glenrothes, glengoyne or glenkinchie or other. After that you can try any of the island whiskies (except talisker) or aberlour for example. Then try some peated bowmore, bruichladdich or talisker and finally go to the ardbeg, laphroaig, lagavulin or coal ila if you keep liking the scotch. After that try everything else, empty your wallet and get a second mortgage .

    • @FightStealDrink
      @FightStealDrink 7 років тому

      not really. scotches can be veerrryyy different from one to another. more so than other whiskeys. there may very well be a perfect scotch for you - but there's nothing wrong with sticking to bourbon if thats your thing.

      It definitely blunts/ alters the palate, but it doesn't wipe out flavor entirely. So, in my experience it brings out the sweetness in a whisky. I enjoy cigars, but usually I pour a nice whisky, drink it alone, then light up a cigar with my refill of a more budget whisky
