In the books they know how to tie off weaves. They don’t know how to invert and hid weaves. The show has changed it so they don’t know tying off weaves.

That’s a weird choice. It changes the magic system a lot. The Aes Sedai can’t do simple weaves that novices can do in the books.

      It actually is not strange.
The Breaking itself allows what can be remembered by the Aes Sedai, and what is forgotten based on what a tv show can display, vs a book.
A big bonus at the same time, can show that a Wise One chaneller can tie off weaves, to show that other channelers from other parts of the world remembered different things.@@christianrapper

The thing about getting Toh is it is often the person's decision if they have Toh and how much and how to meet it. Unless they are a child or don't know and have to be told or it is a well established thing. Avi decided that she had Toh because of it and that getting beaten was how reclaimed her Ji. The wise ones in the books had mentioned to her in other situations that she was being prideful and going to far

I agree on Moiraine/Siuan, in the books they are bound really tight by their ultimate commitment to finding and guiding the dragon. Somehow in the show they have made their partnership more explicitly a relationship than in the books, but they're less of a team which makes zero sense to me.

Speaking on show only, I think that they might be telling us that they're not likely to reunite soon as that was a big disagreement. I don't know how prominent Siuan is in the books but given how little she was used this season, it just might be the show tidying up future storylines beforehand.

What is Suian? After she said "We would've been so better off if you were a girl," my headcanon became that show!Suian's a darkfriend. If you don't find that link intuitive, flip the genders. Imagine you're a girl, doing everything you can to live up to a cursed destiny, and the most powerful man in the world walks up to you and tells you you're worthless because you don't have a dick.
Because that's what Suian did to Rand. Told him the circumstances of his birth are all that define him, that they damn him. And that? Is at best one of the cruelest things you could do to a person.

  • @ianohlander
    @ianohlander 9 місяців тому +6

It bothers me how the little changes they made make no sense and only create more complication and require extta screen time they sinply cannot afford to fix.
5 and 6 were the absolute best episodes of the season. But once the focus of the story shifted back to the made up plots/drama/character quests, the main plot of the EF5 loses all focus
In particular, notice how neither Rand or Mat exercise any personal agency in getting to Falme. It feels like being hit over the head and having the plot drag you to where you are needed.
One of the things, Nerdy, you really liked in the early books was how small little throw away scenes or lines led to an organic situation where everyone was where they needed to be. It wasnt artificial and the movement of the characters felt like it was their choice.
I think the scene sof Rand on his knees for half his appearances in the episode is emblematic of the EF5 characters as a whole.
They are simply dragged or yanked to where they need to be with very little volition or personal choice.
As to Lans scene with cat crosses the courtyard, while it was nice, it felt pandering and fan service. In the books, that line meant something. It was a culmination of Lans relationship and mentorship of Rand. It was earned because Lan had spent weeks working with him.
Here it is a pandering sop to fans who will recognize the quote and squee about it (i did too) and then realize that it literally is meaningless. Nothing of the scene made a difference to Lan or Rand. Rand didnt behave like Lan taught him. Siuan didnt chide Moiraine for letting Lan at him or speak of how scary he was, how she could feel the pattern swirl.
It was a line that ultimately meant nothing. There a few others in this season that do that. Lines that because they arent part of a larger story or arc seriously fall flat of ANY emotional meaning.
And honestly, i have to wonder, do show watchers feel Rand is in any way dangerous or scary? Going by just the show, he feels like a paper tiger.
The show seems to go out of its way to TELL us how we should feel about the Dragon, not show us.
Contrast Rand with Nynaeve or Egwene. They actually seem powerful for demonstrable reasons.
Bah!! I watch your reviews and see you dance around these points or acknowledge them and it all seems so obvious.
Rafe (like Biden, who needs to net someone else run- oops!! ;-) ) needs to get out of the way. He needs to stop undercutting the story he says he is attempting to tell. This hybrid of his isnt working.
Which is sad because SOME of his decisions- esp w regard to the villains- have absolutely enhanced the material.
The showrunner needs to focus on the story he said he would tell, not this thing he is trying to create. Bwcause he is ruining the story that is the heart of this.

@@NerdyNightly I feel like the whole thing would be less off putting ( inconsistent magic system aside ) if rand had any growth or arc at all. S1 was him whining about Egwene and then I guess his arc is accepting something he already accepted which is that he can’t change her mind? Why is CW drama that doesn’t matter at all his arc (or lack of) instead of IDK the fact he’s adopted like I feel like that would take precedence but rands completely forgotten his entire biggest emotional thing? Now S2 he’s fucking lanfear and hasn’t learnt shit about channeling from logaine or sword fighting or really any skill so siuan low-key has a point that morraine was no help. Which again ill accept but atleast make him threatening right? The whole narrative tension is that the dragon will break the world ( that’s the prologue of the show) yet it seems like everyone can shield him which ruins Dumai wells really. It’s not even a matter of skill trumps power when in other cases with other characters that’s not consistent at all. Rands a tough protagonist in general cause he is very prideful but he’s also very competent so it kinda balanced in that regard.
Long comment sorry. My point is I love the villains being OP in the show a lot ( which the books do poorly) being a threat to rand cause he is also OP. Like look at GOT s1-s2 with dany andrand mirrors a similar journey of a innocent to conqueror with destiny given power and extreme pride in book 1-3. But you can’t have something as cool as dany s3 without the strong writing of s1 and s2 and her journey/growth and her own strong will. How are we gonna get book 4 rand which is s3 rand when s1 and s2 have literally done nothing to show his personality/identity and his emotional growth of accepting he’s the dragon which literally could have been so interesting like expand on the book even but they set up nothing likes he’s supposed to wake up and know how to 1000 of things? I feel like the show has very very poor writing and I’m not being rude hopefully it’s just my opinion.

I believe it was Amys who talked about the Maidens being too proud in their actions to meet their ji, that they took it to extremes. I guess I just attributed the scene with Avienda and Bain and Chiad to that. I also thought they were setting up future plot lines with a lot of the political stuff. Like RJ, they are foreshadowing a lot of stuff that doesn't pay off for a long time. Also, I've been wondering just how many seasons they were able to get Sophie O for.

Damane and Healing - Clarus is spot-on.
The Seanchan see the Damane as filthy, even if the Sul'dam are in high esteem, and they would not want to be touched by magic by one of the Damane. If I’m trying to give the biggest benefit of the doubt that I can for Siuan, I’d say she shields him simply to show him how unprepared he is, to display how easily she could render him useless. She then points out to moiraine how he’s still just as unprepared as he was when she found him. It fits with what her pov is through the ep I guess.

First off while I often disagree with Nerdy on many points I'm sorry he is getting hate for expressing them. One should be able to listen to someone with differing views not lash out or get defensive. I've always thought that if someone is afraid to have their views challenged their beliefs must be on very shaky foundations if they can't withstand a bit of pressure.
With regard to Siuan's actions I personally don't agree with them but find them understandable. Its very easy to be morally pure and decent and fair when you have no responsibilities. Just as Moiraine has become hyper focused on protecting the dragon Siuan has spent the last 20 years climbing the political ladder in the White Tower and having to make compromises and keep her eyes on the big picture. She had a plan with Moiraine and following that plan led to the release of Ishamael. That is bound to knock her confidence. Then she gets the news that Moiraine has apparantly been stilled. Yes she is sympathetic to what has happened to her lover but you don't get to be top dog in any international organisation by not seeing the bigger picture. In the books Aes Sedai regards sisters who have been stilled as lesser. They are normal. For all her empathy for Moiraine and what she believes may have happened to her Siuan the pragmatist has to see this as Moiraine being removed from the board. She can't channel to either contain or try and protect Rand. That means its all on Siuan and she is tied to the Tower and aside from state visits can't go galavanting around whereever she wants. We know that the Dragon should be allowed to go free but Siuan is balancing the fate of the world. Does she take the chance like she did before with Moiraine or does she fall back on what she thinks is the safe if morally questionable path? I think Rand not being able to break the shield was the last straw as far as she was concerned and it cements the idea that he can't defend himself.
As for what she did with Moiraine at the end, both women have demonstrated how committed they are to what they see as their mission. Is it any surprise that Siuan is equally ruthless and as willing to put her personal feelings/love aside as Moiraine is with her sister? What she did was a terrible violation of Moiraine's trust but as someone equally willing to do what is necessary I would imagine Moiraine intellectually understands why she did what she did but emotionally the hurt will be hard to get over.
Lastly I think the reveal about how the Tower think the Dragon should be treated was meant to be a counterpoint to the Seanchan's views on female channellers. While it lacks the torture the White Tower's plan/law regarding Randbeing kept from the One Power, being made to channel as directed and used as a weapon sounds a lot like how the damane are treated. So far the show has not revealed much about why the Seanchan treat female channelers they way they do but I'd not be surprised if that comes up in season 3 if a certain book 4 plotline is followed. While not in any way trying to support how the damane are treated I think its meant so show what can happen when any group is prepared to do ANYTHING for what they see as the greater good.

I am so glad you haven't read The Expanse. I wish you could separate the two. All I know is that you can't stand this version, and frankly isn't a great show, but you a hung up, and it just isn't that fun to watch you get angry about it weakness.

I freaking LOVE their reactions! They are pulling apart inconsistencies in the show, not just complaining about how they changed things. And to be honest they like the show, just not the dumb bits.

I think that's unfair honestly. I thought the two previous episodes were quite good, changes and all. This episode isn't, not just as an adaptation but as an episode of tv leading into a finale. Having seen the finale I stand by that. This show is struggling all on its own but that made worse by the fact that there is a pretty beloved series that has a lot of the answers.

I did not deliver the point in a mindful manner, and for that I sincerely apologize. I almost never leave negative comments, I am not a troll. I like you blind reactions better than The Wheel of Time, because you are both deeply invested in it. It is unfair to not give that its due, but it heavily changes what a non book reader can expect. I continue to feed the algorithm gods, by LCS.

90% of the reason I watched this channel in the beginning (and a good reason why I click fast when a new vid drops) is cuz Nerdy is super hot :X So when he said what he said in the intro I was like, "whaaaaa". There's been a few times that I come in and it's just Clarus, like when she was opening some card packs, and I'm like, "Oh... ... ... I'll stay cuz she's cool" xD Don't judge my gay tastes :X

The thing about the Show is that when they decide to nail a character, they really nail a character. So if they've decided to play Siuan's personality differently, there is a good reason for this change.
Also, the episode title is Daes Dae'mar. But we didn't really see much of the Game of Houses being played in this episode.
Or did we? Something for you to think about.

Do they? They've made some fun villains but I wouldn't say they've nailed very much at all. I hope I'm wrong and season 3 brings some shape to this, but I can't find it here yet

      What have they nailed?

    • @nathanaelwong8878

They've nailed the personalities of Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne, Mat, Perrin, Rand, Lanfear and Ishamael (with his Moridin personality). Because of plot changes they don't end up doing the same stuff in the Books but all their actions are very much in-line with book personalities.
They've also nailed other minor characters. Uno's death is quite shocking but considering the situation they put him in plotwise his death was very much in-line with what would have happened if his book character was put in the same situation.

@nathanaelwong8878 no, I really can't agree with much, if any, of that. Certainly not Rand, Perrin, Nynaeve, Egwene, and probably not Lanfear.
