Indeed. The only thing I think is weird is that Zeon and John seem to do a lot of videos together and sort of separate videos on their own, but we don't really see Alex do very many extra videos or videos with just one of the others unless they're all three doing something together, which is really weird because he was there before either of them so you think he'd be doing videos like this all the time with one or the other
Smash introduced me to Dragon Quest just because of the rumors back before Hero was revealed. That's the kind of grab this series has. I'll always be grateful to Sakurai and his team for introducing me and so many others to great franchises. I wish more Smash players had this sort of mindset but whaddya gonna do
Tbh, I wouldnt have bothered to try out Persona if it wasnt for Joker or FF7 if it wasnt for Cloud. Same goes for Shulk and Xenoblade or Bayonetta.. So smash definitely introduced me to a lot of great series
That's pretty exactly what got me into Kingdom Hearts. I saw the hype behind Sora potentially being in Smash back when Joker came out, so I decided to see what the series was all about. Now it's one of my favorite games and I'm really excited that Sora is in Smash now.
Like you, I start playing games I didn't know anything about thanks to Smash, in my case Smash 4. Thanks to that, I discovered some of my favorite games of all time and when I want to start a new saga, I usually look at the Smash roster. Smash is a very important game for all the industry.
@@garfreeek Counting that I only played Mario and Zelda games and now I played almost every saga that has a character in smash... A lot. Even I start playing RPG thanks to Smash (Pokemon, Xenoblade, Dragon Quest...) Cause I was scared of them before.
You know what's funny? My journey of discovery was quite similar to yours - the only videogame characters I had any familiarity with when I first got Smash was Mario, DK, and Pikachu, so Smash helped expand my library and experience drastically.
What a great way to tour a videogame collection! I listened to the whole video and a whole hour went by. I collect Zelda only because most collections get too broad, but the way you talked about the games made me see the appeal for larger collections :)
I remember missing out on the game awards during Joker’s reveal, and waking up the next day, hearing about his reveal and going: “… Who?” Years later, and I now have 3, 4, and 5, and I’ve been loving all of them. Smash has such a magical influence that can introduce someone to so many new things that could end up being life long favourites. Even now with Sora, I had played a bit of kingdom hearts three a few years ago, but with his reveal, I’ve ordered the Kingdom Hearts All-in-One bundle, so I can experience everything I’ve missed out on.
Shadows of Valentia was my second fire emblem game with three houses being my first. I have to say the story and gameplay for Valentia was pretty enticing and the dungeon crawler sections were pretty interesting. I got pretty far in the game but I stopped playing for some reason. Watching this motivated me to replay it and finish
SUper Mario Land! :D That was the first Mario game I owned, such a different experience compared to the NES games, I loved it. It's just a shame that they never went back to the those crazy enemy designs and Tatanga would return in Land 2 as a world boss rather than the end boss. Not to mention the Shmup stages too! ;D
Jon you really knocked it out of the park with this video. Not only is your collection amazing, but the video’s idea is as well! Side note: your burglary story has gotten me worried about my own collection lol
It's amazing how similar your start to gaming is to me Jon, I also only played handhelds up to the Wii. I haven't tried to collect older stuff but I am looking forward to finally playing N64 online.
Okay, seriously though. Donkey Kong Junglebeat is possible one of the most underrated Nintendo games ever made. It was the first Donkey Kong game I ever beat and it was a blast from start to finish. A true hidden gem.
The 1st Fire Emblem we got here in the USA back on the GBA is where i met Roy for the 1st time though as a child, the game had Eliwood his father, his friend called Hector and Lynn my favorite of the Fire Emblem MC.
I verily enjoyed watching this video. I too really got into Nintendo history with Melee. I had an NES, Gameboy, & SNES but didn't have many games for it. My friends/neighbors didn't either and there wasn't a reputable place to rent games, ergo, I didn't play many games. Skipped N64 (my interests were more on baseball, WCW/WWF, comicbooks, etc), but I bought a GBA in early 2002 and a few months later a GameCube. Melee wasn't my first GameCube game; I think it was my 3rd, 4th, or 5th, but the opening trailer blew my mind. Top it off with unlockable trophies with synapses of each characters game/lore and I was hooked into Nintendo. So while I'm not too keen on spirits, I do love that Smash is a celebration of videogames and the fact that since Brawl to Ultimate there have been 3rd party characters joining the roster fills my inner fandom.
I remember back when i was too poor to play Smash Bros 64, I'd just play a marathon of the respective characters' games. It's how I discovered Earthbound too.
The main thing that I've gotten from Smash (I can't remember which one it was, but if I had to guess I'd say Brawl) was my love for the Metroid games. I played smash at a friend's house and was like "Oh look! Cool space suit person!" and ever since then Samus has been my main. I also discovered Zelda, Star Fox, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Mega Man, and loads more because of smash
i know if it wasnt for smash, i would never have heard of persona, xenoblade, metroid, fire emblem, or kid icarus, and im really grateful for that, because i frickin love all of those games
Fun Fact for Sheik she was gonna be in Twilight Princess early on in development but it decided to scrap her. A design for her in Twilight Princess is in Hyrule Historia
Smash on 64 was my introduction to Samus Aran and Captain Falcon and when the Gamecube came out and their respective games were released i just had to try them out. Of course when SMB Meele came out and i was introduce to Marth and Roy and then Fire Emblem was announced for the GBA a few months later. But yeah i can thank some off my fandoms to Smash, especially the Metroid series. Who knows when i would have touch a Metroid game had i not the curiousity that Smash Bros gave me about the space bounty hunter Samus Aran.
Smash is so important, it opens up the nearly the whole history of gaming for me. But i think some additions could be made, master chief, conker, to name a few.
Seeing a Brit with mostly non PAL megaman really brought me back to my childhood buying all of them from foreign countries (this was before Legacy collections)
you should start a podcast. Hearing members of the NL crew showing up on Arlocast and also getting these longer videos of you talking makes me want to hear you guys in podcast form talking about all this stuff together
The same can be said for me about Dragon Quest. Happy Console Gamer speaks so highly of Dragon Quest and Ys so I’ve given them both a go in recent years. DQ 11 and Ys VIII are now two of my favorite games and I am doing my best to collect all the games from both series!
If it weren't for smash, I never would have gotten into the Zelda series. I also am thinking of picking up kingdom hearts for the first time because of soras reveal!
Smash pretty much introduced to me Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and i couldnt be any more happier, its such a great game. Im hoping to get the first Xenoblade game for the Switch soon 💖👏👏
Aside from the collecting cartridges bit, I was I guess reawakened into Nintendo a few years ago just by looking at Smash Bros characters and deciding to figure out where the hell these people were from. I played tons of Nintendo games as a kid but they were basically all Mario banjo, only one Donkey Kong game, and Castlevania. Other than that my parents never bought me any of the other Nintendo franchise games when I was a kid because they thought I wouldn't like them. And I'm so retroactively mad at them because now some of my favorite game branches of all-time are Metroid and Zelda and I love them just so much and it's so weird because we played Castlevania Symphony of the Night all the time but she never thought that I would like Metroid so I never got to try it even though it's extremely similar and now I love Metroid more than anyting
The smash bros zelda actually has a lot more design elements that line up with promotional art for link to the past than link between worlds, but i think nintendo wanted to list the more recent game since it was still on store shelves
My favorite franchises: Mega Man Super Mario Banjo-Kazooie Kirby Xenoblade Fatal Fury/KoF Dragon Quest Donkey Kong Country Wario Land/Ware Metroid The Legend of Zelda EarthBound/Mother
we're kindred spirits, Jon...while I was always a bit of a Nintendo geek, it was Melee that got me insanely into Nintendo history and studying their IPs & worlds...in fact, Roy is still to this day the ONLY fighter I had no idea who they were prior to Smash ( I knew Marth as well as the Fire Emblem franchise in general thanks to the anime OVA from the 90's...which dubbed his name as Mars... ). and my favorite F-Zero is also X.
I’m not sure if anyone commented this yet, but after Piranha Plant’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fire Piranha Plant was added to Mario Tennis Aces as a playable character. So, I’d give Mario Tennis Aces to Piranha Plant in that case.
@@PradoxGamerAu Yeah, that would make sense, but Jon mentioned at 50:25 that, "...I don't think Piranha Plant has ever been playable. Of course, Petey Piranha Piranha Plant has, but just the Piranha Plant? I don't think so." So, he's referring to just a plain Piranha Plant, and not Petey Piranha Plant, which he acknowledged. His Final Smash does incorporate Petey Piranha Plant, though, so I guess you could make a case that Petey Piranha Plant could semi-represent Piranha Plant too.
Hey john i got a physical fan-translate cartridge of mother 1+2 for the gba I have no interest keeping it but if you want i can give it to your collection.
45:39 Take it from me, play Revelation. Fates is a weird case, because they basically divided it into 3 games. Birthright is for beginners, to dip their toes in, Conquest is for veterans, who want an extra challenge, and Revelation is more in line with the rest of the series and has a better story I'm not sure why Nintendo hid the best version of their game behind DLC. I guess they wanted you to play the other two first, because it recontextualizes what happens in those games, but if you're only going to play one, it should be Revelation
