One thing that makes me grateful to have a 3DS and a collection of games for it is that it's an extremely difficult system to properly emulate. Between the screen layout, the touch screen controls, and of course the 3D effect it's just impossible to get a true 3DS experience on a computer or emulator handheld.
It's not for the 3DS but I have an emulator for DS games (DraStic) on my old android phone. If you're going to emulate DS games I think playing on a device where you can use a touch screen improves the experience. But some DS games are too gimmicky to be played on an emulator, mostly games that force you to use the microphone or rely heavily on the touch screen ( I can think of Spectrobes, and LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, maybe Nintendogs?).
@@CinnamonOwO Citra can emulate the games well enough I’m sure, but it can’t emulate the 3D effect or the general feel of playing a real 3DS, which is what the games were designed for in the first place. From what I can remember, we had NSMB2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and Smash 4. We didn’t get much big games for the 3DS, (only Smash 4 really) since we got big games for the Wii and Wii U instead, and my older brother spent money on upgrading the 3DS to the XL and New XL. With how quickly the Switch was selling and the hype it got when it first launched, it was kinda inevitable. To most people, having 2 portable devices (yes I know the Switch is a hybrid) to develop for didn't make sense. People didn't want to deal with Nintendo potentially splitting resources. It's a bit of a shame, considering the immense backlash for the 3DS still being produced around the Switch's launch is what caused the system to die so quickly.
The 3DS is my nostalgia console, and an amazing Pokemon machine from late teenhood to adulthood back when it was literally all I wanted to play. My top 10 most played games are dominated by 100+ hour games and 8 Pokemon games. My top 3 included Alpha Sapphire, Moon, and Ultra Moon in that order, all have 1000+ hours into them. I'm actually playing my 3DS right now, currently alternating between Mario Golf: World Tour and Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary.
The Nintendo 3DS is one of my favorite consoles of all time. It has so many incredible games that still make me feel happy to play today. Even today, I'm downloading and picking up games that I missed out on for the system, and they're creating new awesome memories for me. Just like the gamecube, it has one of the most impressive lineups of games on an often less-talked about system. Happy 10 Years to the Nintendo 3DS!
I remember travelling around Japan in 2013 with my 3DS and passed a chap on the subway who was also playing that street pass game. He was so excited to match with someone from the UK that he jumped up in excitement, shuffled up to me, proceeded to stab away at my avatar on his 3DS and said "It's you!!". Very unusual but such a perfect example of the little things that made the 3DS great!
I picked one up last year, a new 3ds. I just fell in love with the system, bought an animal crossing New 3ds XL and started collecting and playing the fantastic library of games this console have. My Switch have been picking up dust for a little while now...
I was 5 when the 3DS came out and I always wanted one. I might get one at some point soon since there's so many games that I really want to play that aren't available on Switch, like A Link Between Worlds, Metroid Samus Returns, Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario 3D Land.
23:00 Alex's kitty, a New 3DS XL, Animal Crossing memories.... literally everything that makes me happy in the world right there. This is my happy place.
I bought a 3ds at launch, and recently found out one of my family members has my og 3ds, and im going to be getting it back in my hands again this year
If you've ever got the time, I think a NintendoLife Podcast would be super awesome! Been really enjoying these discussion videos recently and they're very well suited to podcast potentially :) Of course the video format is also great, just throwing an idea out there!
Shin Megami Tensei IV will always be my favorite 3DS game. Such a beautiful game with thought-provoking themes that still leaves a memorable impression on me to this day.
I love the 3DS. It's 2021 and I just upgraded my old 3DS to a New 2DS XL and am enjoying it. Fire Emblem and Monster Hunter enough reasons alone for me to have the console but there are tons of other great games on it too like A Link Between Worlds, which is my favorite Zelda game.
It's crazy to look back and see how we all had very similar experiences with the 3DS. I also got mine when I was going to College. I absolutely loved carrying it in my backpack and getting multiple Street Passes throughout the day. Back then my time was split between going to class and my part time job but then being able to get together with my friends at the end of the night to play MH3U was great! The 3DS will always be in my top favorite consoles of all time. Thank you for making this nostalgia filled video and for sharing your experiences. Keep up the great work!
I can’t even explain all the nostalgia I have for this system. I can’t believe it’s all going away just like that. I will say that I remember how I got my first one. I found a 3ds somewhere back in 2013, no one claimed it and I cleaned it up. Mario and Luigi Dream Team was my first game and Omega Ruby had the most nostalgia for me. Rest in Greatness 3ds.😔
I never owned a Gameboy Advanced, DS, or 3DS when it was contemporary. I had a OG Gameboy back in the early 90s and those games were so jank, I think it kinda ruined handheld gaming for me until I bought a Switch. After I got that, it motivated me to go and pick up a 3DS. I tricked it out with mods and software galore which allowed me to go back and play countless games from all of Nintendos handhelds from the early 2000’s until 2018. I regret now not getting any of those systems as there were some bangers on those systems. And the weird thing with Nintendo is that they put unique experiences on their handhelds. Like, there is nowhere else to play Metroid Fusion than on their handhelds (well, until they released it on the Wii U but that almost doesn’t even count). Probably the only thing I’m grateful for during this pandemic is the fact it made me go into the deep well of video games. Thanks COVID!
I would love to talk about more of my experiences with the 3ds and my most played game, but my new 3dsXL died due to water damage about 2-3 years ago and I still haven't fully recovered. I felt like I lost a part of me, but that in and of itself should tell you how much my 3ds meant to me. It is my favorite console period and I am so happy that it existed.
I had a friend who worked at nintendo when the 3DS dropped. As an employee he got his system early. My wife contacted em, and told him she was going to buy one for me. He gave her his early system before he opened it, and I got it like 2 weeks early. 3DS is a great system man.
"We cut the price in half because it felt like the right thing to do" Damn, I wish that Nintendo was selling me a 10 year old wii game with spruced up visuals
I owned a 3DS ever since late 2011 (I was in 1st grade) I still have my original blue 3DS, I love that system to death and I am feeling old now that it’s been 10 years. The 3DS shaped my childhood and it’ll always be my favorite portable of all time.
I remember getting the 3DS on Christmas 2011, and got Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land with it. Still 2 of my favourite games ever. I love this system.
I really miss the simple graphics of the 3DS. Switch is amazing, but there's almost too much information density on the screen when you design games meant to be viewed at both small and large scale.
My 3ds has been getting so much love lately. My collection is really growing and I’m surprised at how expensive it is to collect for. Really regretting all of the digital downloads I made in the past.
Loved the video! Also shoutout to Zion for saying what was on my mind for the 25 min leadup- freaking MII PLAZA was a BANGER when the 3DS was released! I was at university, and just carrying my 3ds around to classes maxed out my visitors. I'm not afraid to admit I bought into some of the mini games, favs being the war one and gardening. Similarly, I will never forget just sitting at Gen Con and the flood of 3ds green/blue light pings of other nearby 3ds's. Good times
So many fond memories staring into these tiny screens. Majority of them being Monster Hunter (which populates the most of my Top 5 in Activity Log), but these experiences will always be held dear to me.
A few weeks ago I started playing every Zelda game back to back to kind of celebrate the 35th Anniversary AND i'm up to Majora's Mask which I'm playing on 3DS and next is the Oracle games and having picked up my New3DS after more than 2 years of it being in the drawer just made me so nostalgic for it, even though I first got one back in 2013. Great console, with an even greater library
I have some great memories of the 3DS here are a few: Putting over 600 hours into Pokemon Alpha Sapphire- I really got into the online secret base feature, I loved just connecting to the internet, getting 30 new secret bases to find, and battle their trainers, deleting almost everyone afterwards so I could get new secret bases the next time I connected to the internet. I also spent hours using Blissey Bases to train hundreds of Pokemon to Level 50, so I could try them out at the Battle Maison, and check them off my list of Pokemon trained to Level 50. Getting into the Fire Emblem Series with Awakening- I always had a little bit of a curiosity with the Fire Emblem Series thanks to Smash Bros. And because Awakening is so accessible, I decided to finally give it a try, and I fell in love with the series.

YASS!
The console that rose from the dead only for people to want it to die.
It seems like people wanted the switch to get all of the developer attention possible after it launched
Yeah I don't like how everyone wanted it to die and now they're asking for 3DS games on Switch.
@@TZMHBT People didn't want to have to use the 3DS for games that came out after the Switch.
@@internetguy7319 I'm aware, and it's completely reasonable considering how the Switch was a successor to both the console and handheld line.
I need this man to call me and tell me I'm fabulous everyday. That voice makes me melt.
This Nostalgic Console, Now I'm using Switch Everyday, Such a Memory!!! 😍😍😍
I picked one up last year, a new 3ds. I just fell in love with the system, bought an animal crossing New 3ds XL and started collecting and playing the fantastic library of games this console have. My Switch have been picking up dust for a little while now...
Could have listened to you guys talk about the 3DS and it’s fantastic library of games for another 2 hours. Thank you for this!
I love the long discussions between these three. Fun as hell
Great show - enjoyed listening to you guys chatting about the excellent 3DS. More of these please.
You guys ever consider releasing these as an audio podcast?
I was 5 when the 3DS came out and I always wanted one. I might get one at some point soon since there's so many games that I really want to play that aren't available on Switch, like A Link Between Worlds, Metroid Samus Returns, Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario 3D Land.
I was also 16 years old, there was no wi-fi in my house at the time lol. My God, how fast it went!
23:00 Alex's kitty, a New 3DS XL, Animal Crossing memories.... literally everything that makes me happy in the world right there. This is my happy place.
29:47 "its one of my smash holes." "... I BEG YOUR PARDON?"
U beat me to it xD
still own one, still love it, would buy again...
Literally playing my 3DS while listening to this video in the background. Trying to finish my Gen 1 Dex Before Pokemon Day.
I bought a 3ds at launch, and recently found out one of my family members has my og 3ds, and im going to be getting it back in my hands again this year
Also Pilotwings was my launch game aside from the AR games, that game is relaxing and fun
Get a 2ds and or 3ds. Mod it and enjoy the entire 3ds library.
Mario Kart 7 players rise up. 😭
Do you still use the online function for it?
I played as Miis of Waluigi and Diddy Kong online in that game.
*rises
I play 7 online all the time
Meee
Man I played this so much in Uni thinking I was too old for it. Good to hear others have awesome Uni memories from it as well!
The ambassador's program was my introduction to the Fire Emblem series. So I won in the end, I guess.
I just clicked this video not seeing how long it was. Thank you good people, it was a good listen.
picked up a New 2DS XL a year ago, still feels new to me dammit!
I got a 2ds back in 2019 and I love it, still playing some games from time to time
Lmao I didn't know what slow down was back on the SNES.
When games chugged, I just thought "That must be slow motion, like in movies".
I love these long-form videos like this! They're so cozy and great to have on as I'm working on something.
I can't express how much I love the 3DS cause I'm not good at writing, and certainly all these tears aren't helping either
I wish they'd bring Streetpass to the Switch!!!
Same!! I really miss getting streetpass tags whenever i go to malls or travel :')
Really love this style of vid. Great having you all come together
I still use my 3ds to this day. I enjoy it more than my switch
agreed.
That’s good bro I hacked my 3ds and played many hours but I play my switch mostly I still play my 3ds but I play so many games that I need to finish
I’m split. Currently playing Mario 3D World on my Switch, and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on my 3DS.
@@meatmansteve382 🤣😂 same I’m playing 3D world and bowsers inside story + bowser junior
@@hugoman21 I’ve finished 3d world and boosters fury and loved it, I still prefer 3d land tho
I was in 4th grade when it came out, now I'm in my 4th college semester...
The 3DS was/is amazing.
This hits very hard.
I had a friend who worked at nintendo when the 3DS dropped. As an employee he got his system early. My wife contacted em, and told him she was going to buy one for me. He gave her his early system before he opened it, and I got it like 2 weeks early. 3DS is a great system man.
"We cut the price in half because it felt like the right thing to do"
Damn, I wish that Nintendo was selling me a 10 year old wii game with spruced up visuals
This brought back so many memories. I was a huge 3DS player, and in the end I had three XLs. Thanks for the fun video!
I was planning on getting one last year but I got a PS Vita instead, maybe I'll get one this year !
nice what games did you get for your vita
I owned a 3DS ever since late 2011 (I was in 1st grade) I still have my original blue 3DS, I love that system to death and I am feeling old now that it’s been 10 years. The 3DS shaped my childhood and it’ll always be my favorite portable of all time.
Got back to my 3ds to play the Dragon Quest remakes. Glad I did because they're really good
Am loving these longer content, its like listening to a Nintendo Life podcast.
So you guys just gonna ignore the huge bomb Pokémon dropped today lol
they’re obviously working on a 40 minute discussion coming later
give them time
HA I WAS RIGHT
AYYYY-
nah i’m jk i don’t care but i was right
Really enjoyed this, I like the longer form nostalgia discussion
this dosent feel like its 10 years old
I remember getting the 3DS on Christmas 2011, and got Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land with it. Still 2 of my favourite games ever. I love this system.
I really miss the simple graphics of the 3DS. Switch is amazing, but there's almost too much information density on the screen when you design games meant to be viewed at both small and large scale.
Amen Zion I absolutely agree I totally miss the days of not knowing what frames were!
the DS/3DS are still way better than the SHwITch and have better battery power
ya know i’m gonna put this on in the background and continue my 100% journey in dkc returns 3D
it just feels right
I can't believe you didn't mention Kirby Planet Robobot. Considered one of the best modern Kirby games to date. D:
Had to replace my 3DS due to it getting broken, the first time I got a StreetPass I was so happy to have it again
Man I love this type of Nostalgic discussions, it is just a great thing to listen. Any podcasts out there from Nintendo life
My 3ds has been getting so much love lately. My collection is really growing and I’m surprised at how expensive it is to collect for. Really regretting all of the digital downloads I made in the past.
Why?
Loved the video! Also shoutout to Zion for saying what was on my mind for the 25 min leadup- freaking MII PLAZA was a BANGER when the 3DS was released!
I was at university, and just carrying my 3ds around to classes maxed out my visitors. I'm not afraid to admit I bought into some of the mini games, favs being the war one and gardening. Similarly, I will never forget just sitting at Gen Con and the flood of 3ds green/blue light pings of other nearby 3ds's. Good times
29:45 and Alex's reaction to that gives me life
So many fond memories staring into these tiny screens. Majority of them being Monster Hunter (which populates the most of my Top 5 in Activity Log), but these experiences will always be held dear to me.
I just buyed one last month. The 3ds is even with owning a switch a special place in my heart.
I got a 3ds in June 2011 for my birthday and remember the ambassador program I was so hyped to get the games.
Enjoying these podcast-style discussions and it's great to see their personalities and passion for games coming through.
I have some great memories of the 3DS here are a few:
Putting over 600 hours into Pokemon Alpha Sapphire- I really got into the online secret base feature, I loved just connecting to the internet, getting 30 new secret bases to find, and battle their trainers, deleting almost everyone afterwards so I could get new secret bases the next time I connected to the internet.
