My only issues with motion control was having to move the cursor to the edge of the screen to get the character to look.. Like in Twilight princess felt it worked perfectly. Destroy of humans not so much. An for that reason it made you have to sit directly in front of the tv. An a long playthrough is gonna involve more effort to play then just using your thumb to aim. Also developers I think had a hard time developing motion controls since it was a new concept.

The Wii was my _life._ Never before, or since, had a game console captured my heart and imagination. My 12-year-old self was obsessively anticipating the Wii's launch every day. So much so in fact, that me and my parents and friends even camped out in front of Kmart on the night before the console's grand American launch on the 19th of November, 2006! This was the first and only time I ever did that for a game system. And that was a memory I will never forget. My first three games on it were fantastic: Wii Sports, Excite Truck and Zelda: Twilight Princess. I played them every single day as part of my daily routine, and my library of games steadily grew from there, culminating in the release of my personal most hyped game of all time: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Wii represents a huge turning point in my life. Sentimental memories aside, it was fun, it was unique, innovative and whimsical, it was peak Nintendo. And it was beautiful. I feel like it's very underappreciated these days in hindsight. I understand motion controls are a huge pet peeve with a lot of people...but my experiences were, for the most part, flawless and enjoyable. Many games such as the aforementioned three launch titles, Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart Wii, World of Goo, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Xenoblade and Zelda: Skyward Sword remain some of my favorite games of all time. Thank you, Wii, for some of the happiest memories of my adolescence!

While many people think the Wii took Nintendo in the wrong direction until the Switch, it still had its fair share of true greats, Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, World of Goo, Xenoblade, look me in my face and tell me those are bad games, go on I dare you, not to mention the Virtual Console started the retro boom, still to this day one of Nintendos finer consoles.
Some could argue a casual audience led to a flood of shovelware, but the PS2 had that problem too (lots of people bought it for the DVD player first and foremost), so I don't think that's fair.

":While many people think the Wii took Nintendo in the wrong direction until the Switch" Many people think the opposite of this, the Wii generally gets more love for what it did than the switch. Tbh these days people like to think Nintendo became bad right around switch online.

The comparison with the PS2 is flat out wrong. The PS2 had a lot of shovelware, but unlike the Wii, it didn't become the main bulk of its catalogue. Not even close. If you compare launch dates during their respective primes, the Wii had around 5 genuinely good games a year, while the PS2 had like 15-20. There's just no comparison.

I was 38 when the Wii launched, and gaming on 360, PS2, Gamecube and GBA (SP). While I was interested in getting a Wii (to play Twilight Princess), I didnt get swept away by all the early hype and excitement around it, and decided to wait for the game library to deepen, and for a game that truly offered me a 'new-gen' experience, with lots of features. That game was Medal of Honor Heroes 2 ... a superb campaign, an on-rails light-gun arcade mode, 32-player online matches and fabulous integration of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk's features. I bought my Wii in 2008 with MoHH2, Twilight Princess, Rayman Raving Rabbids and of course Wii Sports bundled in ... it was a superb weekend of gaming on my new console, and the start of a great connection with a gaming platform that I still enjoy now. I have over 100 physical games and around 80 digital, and still pick-up the occasional pre-owned disk if I see a game for the right price.

My wii still gets alot of play time. Taught my eldest daughter how to play monster hunter on it with Tri's co op arena abd we're still having a blast with it (only playable with the wii remotes - the controller was usable with the game, but the mechanics were 100% suited for the remotes as underwater combat was way less clunky). I have alot of games that won't ever get ports either like Mad world, Crystal Bearers and the Conduit so It gets alot of use just because of that.
I'm old enough that I've lived with and mostly owned all the Nintendo consoles, my dad even owning two old game an watches.... I feel ancient and I'm not 36 yet 😅
Also the game your thinking of Alex is No more heroes 1& 2. Both games had Silvia call you on the phone via the wii remote speaker and hilariously with Rabbids go home they had an extra app where it reflected the inside of the remote on the tv screen, so as you shake it the rabbid gets violently thrown around and the remote speaker played the noises of the Rabbid so it was more believable that it was inside it! My youngest of my two kids absolutely loves it 🤣

Here’s an unknown fact about Skyward Sword for Wii: It doesn’t use the IR sensor. Like, at all.
I replayed the Wii version this summer while the hype for the HD remake was going. Then I started playing it while laying in my sofa, sideways away from the TV. I found it weird that it worked.
So I started experimenting. When you boot up the game, you have to use the sensor for the calibration screen, but that’s the ONLY time you need it. After that was done, I tried putting the sensor in a drawer, completely hidden from view, turning sideways from the TV… and it still worked fine. Just press down on the d-pad to calibrate the pointer, and that’s the centre.
So the game only uses gyro aiming. The only instances it uses the sensor bar is on the first calibration screen, which is weird why it would need to do that in the first place, when it completely ditches it afterwards.

I have had the Wii in a little less than half of my life, because I'm apparently a year or so older than Alex.
My brother and I finally convinced our family that we needed the Wii, but missed out on pre-order opportunities. I would call K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us, and game shops a few days a week until April when we finally were able to pick up our own Nintendo Wii! I used most of my residual cash reserves to scrap by and get Twilight Princess at Sam's Club, which was the first LoZ I played fully.
    So many great memories

I had Trauma Center 1 & 2 on the DS, and considered getting it on Wii. But it seemed like touchscreen was what the game was designed around, I wasn't sure how it would translate to the Wiimotes. I think it's a shame they didn't make a Trauma Center for the Wii U. That game would have been the perfect use of the game pad.

15:30: Pointing was not the big part of the Wii. It was flailing the Wiimote around. It wasn't gamers that made the system what it was, it was adults who were buying their first ever (and only) console for motion controls. They did not care about nor buy Resident Evil 4 or GoldenEye or Red Steel 2.
And it's a shame that the guy who bought a used Wii had trouble with it, because the pointer ALWAYS worked. Motion controls may not have always worked, but the pointer always worked. If the infrared bulbs were out or if you had direct sunlight (contains infrared light!), that could interfere. Also using non-OEM Wiimotes causes that. But a proper Wii setup just simply works for pointing.

A hidden gem for me is Rodea The Sky Soldier. Unfortunately it was only released in the West as part of a combo pack with the abysmal Wii U port which is why most won't have played it, but the Wii version, which is how Yuji Naka intended it to be played, is tons of fun and had a far superior control scheme and powerup system. Definitely worth picking it up on Wii U, and then just ignoring the Wii U disc and sticking to the Wii version instead.

I know it got a bad rep among 'hardcore' gamers but I never understood why. Tons of great games with lesser known ones like The Last Story, Klonoa, Sin & Punishment Star Successor, Zak & Wiki filling out the lineup with the mainstream stuff like the Zelda, Marios, Metroid, Punch-Out, etc. The Virtual Console and retro-style WiiWare games like Contra ReBirth were brilliant. Wii was in my top 5 favorite Nintendo systems behind SNES, Game Boy Advance, DS, Game Boy/Color. It's dropped out of the top 5 now as Switch is just behind SNES, imo, but still tons of great memories from the Wii era. I remember the day I got home from college for Thanksgiving vacation and heading over to Gamestop to get the system. The rest of that day was spent playing Twilight Princess. The hype was real and through 2010, the console had a very nice run. If 2011 and 2012 hadn't been so quiet, the Wii might be more fondly remembered.

I met the guy and we waited for the stand to be set up... and waited and waited. The person from the shopping center told us that the Nintendo rep was stuck in traffic. We sat there for hours. He finally arrived and set up the booth. We only got to try it for about 5 minutes before a big crowd formed to try the console. I just had a look and found my pics from the event I'd archived from 2006. Good times :)

It's just a personal opinion, but I think that the Wii was the best videogame ever. There was a game for everyone, it was the first (and in my opinion the only) time when everybody in the family, or ppl who just didn't liked videogames, would play and really have a good time.
At the time I had a ps3, and I remember going to a friend's house to play his Wii, where we would always call a bunch of friends (lots of them even weren't into games and stuff) and play a ton of games, sometimes with 4+ players playing simultaneously. And then I couldn't justify why I hadn't chosen the Wii for my home console. I mean, Ps3 had better graphics, but Wii was a lot funnier and interesting in every other way (even the graphics were not bad, as games were designed around it).
It was only some years later, lots of years later, that I bought a used Wii console to fill that void of not having played a Wii properly.
Today I have a Switch, which resembles again that thing of a "not so potent/graphics console caught between the crazy machines of ps4/ps5 and xboxes", and I am extremely happy with it. I think Nintendo consoles are the only ones that go beyond of being just a "CPU for gaming", they are a whole different thing.

5:55: What is this guy talking about? The Wii U could not play GC games simply because its drive could not read the smaller discs. Now that it's been modded, it plays them with perfect compatibility so long as you have the ISO on an SD card or USB drive. The Switch doesn't need a DVD drive to play old games anymore than the Wii U does. The difference (obviously) is that the Wii U was using a compatible descendant of the CPU/GPU combo that both the GC and Wii used, so it could those games natively. The Switch doesn't use a PPC processor and could only run those in emulation, like N64 games on Wii or Wii U. It has nothing to do with a physical drive.

I do wonder how it would’ve done if it was as powerful as the Xbox 360.
Probably not as well but it would likely still do well.

Looking at the Gamecube, I suspect that the Wii being made with the mindset of power over unique gameplay would have possibly ended Nintendo in the console wars. Their sales were going down and down from N64 to Gamecube.

So glad that Fragile Dreams got a special mention. I think my personal pick for my favourite hidden gem I owned though was probably The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. Being from the Ace Combat dev team, it's not exactly looked at terribly fondly compared to their other games, but it was a very bold experimental title that committed hard to its unique controls, the plot honestly was a perfect complement to the (highly underrated) Sky Crawlers film and it still had all the Ace Combat magic to its stages and worldbuilding. Also still love The Last Story. Don't have much else that really qualifies as particularly overlooked/hidden in my library since i was looking more at growing my DS and (oddly, I know) PS2 collections at that time. Well okay I also have Pandora's Tower but... well, that's seen ports and it's also not a favourite of mine. Speaking of I really wish Wii U had seen more Wii ports in retrospect...
I also got a lot out of the (tragically even more limited) range of titles available in the Wii Shop Channel over here in New Zealand. People throw shade on their ports of the DS Ace Attorney trilogy but honestly I consider the format it took, making the first game's bonus case a separate DLC item kind of made it the perfect way to play the games as a fan interested in experiencing them in release order. I never got any of the ReBirth games which I deeply regret, knowing what they brought to the table at the time, but I *did* try out a lot of other things like Cave Story, the select few Family series party games from Arc System Works (which weren't great but some were acceptable options for when i had friends over), Muscle March (one hell of a game there), chick chick BOOM (a very good enhanced port of a surprisingly good competitive 1v1 flash game), MotoHeroz (the now forgotten but then surprisingly great multiplayer-oriented Trials-like game), Bomberman Blast, FFCC: My Life as a King and others. And demos of plenty of others like the bit.Trip games.
Plus the exceptional Virtual Console lineup (even though reduced to only a bit over half that of the japanese one). The inclusions of titles even unreleased in PAL regions prior was huge and I got a lot out of it too. The various SNES JRPGs (putting aside the presense of Square, Ogre Battle is brilliant) and the all guaranteed excellent (albeit definitely overpriced in retrospect, Nintendo Points Cards weren't exactly cheap...) N64 lineup (I didn't get some until Wii U but still had a blast with the likes of Mario Party, Smash and Ogre Battle 64 back then) were already more than enough to complement absolutely everything else the console offered both in and out of its own games, but then going into overdrive with its Turbografx, Master System, Mega Drive, Commodore 64 and Neo Geo offerings (even if i tended to skew away from many of those systems' titles, generally just trying oddities like Gain Ground, RPGs like Ys Book I & 2 and Phantasy Star, Bomberman titles... and some SNK fighters too (though not many since I already had prior exposure to most series outside of wiiware anyway)). Sadly didn't dive into GameCube backwards compat since controllers and games simply weren't around in stores here by then and eventually just jumped to Wii U for housing my regular Wii fix. Either way though, Wii's VC was pretty OP.
Still disappointed at the wealth of titles that skipped Australasian markets or even exclusively New Zealand on the service such as FAST Racing League, Snowpack Park or Overturn, not to mention the Japan-exclusives like that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon trio or that one escape game from INTENSE in the Simple series... It wasn't as bad about that as their more handheld eShops at least.
Anyway yeah Wii had a lot going on all around it and I'm glad people remember.

I'm still mind blown when people say they had trouble with the pointer controls when it was literally the most accurate thing that the wii had to offer...most of the issues normally would come from calibration, the sensor bar being on the top or bottom of the screen, or you're too close or far away

Here in the US, every Tuesday was awesome for virtual console releases before changing to Thursdays. Pointer controls can get wonky with large windows or bright sunlight, but fixing that (heavy curtains) makes it practically flawless. Also, our newest cat did chewed up the sensor bar cable when she was a kitten 3 years ago. So many good memories! Thanks.

    Oof…right in the old age.
I remember putting my Wii on layaway in Summer 2007 only to promptly pay it off the very next week. I retired it in 2012 when Wii U came out but hooked it up last year when an internet outage forced my Xbox into a neutered state (all digital future, am I right?).
A soft mod for Mother 3 and various conquered GameCube and Wii games later, that little white box remains under my entertainment shelf to this day. It will probably be retired again someday, but it has absolutely served me well for 15 years and counting.

I got the DS and the Wii in a bowling alley on my birthday when I was turning 3, and we were obsessed with it. The DS and Wii were my first two Nintendo systems, the DS was my first true machine that I can take with me wherever I want, and the Wii was the system that truly introduced me to the magic and brilliance of Nintendo in general. And while it wasn’t an overpowered machine and wasn’t super focused on cool features and other BS, it was just all about simple fun, and that’s what Nintendo was and still is (kinda) all about.

my Wii hidden gem would have to be Kororinpa! I think it falls under the Marble Madness (Saga?) title in the US, it's simple, easy to learn, hard to master and all around just good fun, I 100%'d it multiple times as a kid and again recently as a 25 year old.

Dragon Quest Swords was one of my favorite games to play when I was younger. The scale I felt when I played it really made it feel immersive and the motion controls were done very well. Another one I have memories only from a friends house was Cocoto’s Fishing Master. We would take turns in between fish and just moving through each map was awesome. Another small one is Pokemon Rumble which I really enjoyed as an 8-10 year old. Idk if any of these hold up.

I haven't gamed in over 20 years. And then in July I bought myself a used Wii. In 2021. This console has reintroduced me to gaming, and I absolutely love it. I don't care that it's a 15-year-old console! I've already amassed 43 games. They are affordable and so much fun! My favorite game would be "House of the Dead Overkill"
