Hi, as a french person who was in the US this summer, I had a similar experience. I collect Zelda merch and in Europe we have so little of it and it's super expensive, in the states I found amazing and silly stuff! It was fun hearing the excitement in your voice because that's how I felt when I found a child's book Molblin's magic spear and my family was looking at me weird so I had to tone it down :D

Cex and Cash Convertors are basically the same concept too. They're "second hand" shops. Charity shops rely 100% on donations where as second shops rely on trade ins. The age of dedicated gaming shops is long gone in the UK sadly. Was amazing back in the day and there are still a few dotted about but the culture has moved online mostly.

Zion! Let me give you one hell of a tip when it comes to PAL GameCube games. Most PAL GameCube game do have a PAL 60Hz option on them, it's just that to enable this you need to press and hold the B button as the game boots up, just as you do if you wanted to launch games in progress scan mode on NTSC models. It'll show a menu to select 50hz, 60hz, or perform a test to see if your TV can do it. You'll need to do this on a CRT so that you can at least see the scan, it'll wrap around and around, but once you fix it, you should be able to get the 60hz mode to run. The catch being is that it's PAL 60hz and no NTSC 60hz, so there might be colour problems and more incompatibility issues. It's just that if you don't do the B button thing, you'll be stuck with 50hz. The only other thing I could suggest is buying a TV from a military base, they typically has TVs that will work on multiple signal types because they expect that soldiers might be stationed abroad in a country where TVs might work differently. So if you know a friend or a family member in the army or navy, they might be able to order a TV that supports NTSC and PAL out of the box.

    • @diegog1853
      @diegog1853 Рік тому +2

@@raptros But he owns the physical game... he can just create an ISO of his physical game from his disc and play the game on dolphin completely legally, no piracy at all.
      Emulation is not piracy.
And besides... your argument is kind of backwards, people WILL pirate certain games as long as they are not available, if square would like to avoid people pirating their games as much as possible, the best thing they can do is sell their games, not selling them doesn't solve anything, just makes the problem worse. People want to buy old games, retrogaming is a huge market, new ports constantly comming out. For most consumers piracy is the last option, it is just a lot harder to do, as easy as it might seem to some, setting up an emulator with a comfortable controller set up, finding the roms, etc is hard for most people. Something they are willing to do only if they really really want to play the game or if they are already acquainted with tech and emulation. I don't blame emulation for the awful practices of a lot of companies regarding their legacy content. They want to create artificial scarcity and emulation at worst is a small fight against that. Not to mention a huge fight for preservation.

10:45 Actually, while a vast majority of DS games are region free and can be played on any DS or 3DS system regardless of the region, games that utilize the DSi's hardware in some way (ie: camera or WPA/WPA2 internet connections) are semi-region locked and can only be played either on the correct region's DSi/3DS systems or an original DS/DS Lite from any region. It's a very small number games that do this (the only games I'm aware that are this way are DSi exclusive games and the Gen 5 DS Pokemon games), but it's something to keep in mind if you find one of those games.
That said, yeah. The prices for older games here in the US is absolutely ridiculous, so I'm pretty surprised to see such cheap prices in other regions for some games even with conversion being considered.

But if you buy across the mainland of Europe, you need to watch out for regional versions with no English whatsoever! As a Belgian from the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, I bought Black & White back in the day from a bargain bin in the Dutch speaking part, but the game on the disc turned out to be in French … It was luckily a PC game and they released the English language as a patch, but you will be out of luck with other games and especially with console games.

Seeing this really made me think how used games sales are different everywhere around Europe. I live in Finland myself, and I have noticed that many of the games that are super expensive in US or UK, can be found relatively cheap here. For example, I read that Dragon Quest IX can be over hundred dollars or punds, but here I was able to find one for 40€. And there was not even a huge demand for it.
Or course, there is less demand for these games and therefore way less supply as well, but trying to find out of print games from DS/Wii -generation onwards can fun and sometimes surprising. Older games tend to be more rare and have carts only as preservation of cardborad boxes and paper booklets weren't exactly a priority for people before retro gaming became cool.

I'm in the UK but used to travel to Greece a lot for holidays as a kid. I remember when Pokemon Silver came out my brother and I both bought a copy each at the airport and basically spent the whole holiday glued to our Gameboys. Another trip I bought the Pocket Pikachu at a neat game shop in a Greek town. Good memories.

So i was in the UK in May and I went ham at CEX. Every town/city i went to if there was a CEX i’ll have gone there at least once to check out the DVDs and 3DS games. I even bought a red DS lite to play DS and gameboy games since i never had one as a kid. The best part was in London where when the CEX employees found out i’m from overseas they all asked if i’ve had a chance to ride the Elizabeth Line since it just opened when i was there.

I live in the UK so I never ever got to play Mario Super Sluggers despite really looking forward to it. Couple years ago I visited my friends in Canada and spent the week tracking it down. It was so worth it!
Also a Canadian store had a PAL PS2 which he let me have for cheap and upon bringing it home, turns out it was region chipped and could now play all my imported PS2 games. It's like a treasure hunt!

That's interesting i'm in the PAL region, and back in the day i bought the Zoids Vs. games, arguably the games i spent the most time on specially Vs. III, even more than smash melee, they were Japanese imports, so i used a free loader disk, it was a standalone free loader without the action replay part and the game ran without a hitch.
My guess is that this was because for a while our TVs were stuck in 50hz and later they started selling TVs that supported both settings and at the time the cube came out TVs that supported both 50hz and 60hz setting became the main thing, i suppose in the US TVs only supported 60hz through out, so that is makes quite the hurdle if you import from the PAL region to the US.
That leads me to a small curiosity though, the Genesis is not region locked however it will change the settings of the game automatically depending on the region, my Genesis copy of Sonic 2 runs as if it was a pal game, what would happen if you booted a pal version of Sonic the hedgehog 1 on a US Genesis?

I live in Sweden and most physical stores for video games are out of business here. Occasionally I'll stumble on one, but even so prices are ridiculous. There are a couple that always show up on our version of comic con, but it's not even fun to browse their selection because of the prices. But I did go to the UK back in 2019. I went to MCM Comic Con in Birmingham and walking past the video game stalls there were an absolute delight. I got complete in box copies of Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Platinum, GBA version of Link to the past and Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist of the Roses for PS2 (but no manual for that one) for a total of 115 GBP. That wouldn't even pay for Platinum alone in Sweden. Looking at Swedish "eBay" right now (3 years later, but prices haven't gone up that much as far as I know), I'd have to pay the equivalent of over 300 GBP for those same games, not including shipping. Also went to a CEX in London where I stayed. Didn't buy any games there, but did buy a Complete in box Playstation Vita for 85 GBP. Best I could find in Sweden for a boxed one is 200+ GBP and a loose one sells for around 130-150.

Yep CashConverter is a chain of pawn shops, you do find independent ones still.
Charity shops, even though look like a thrift I'd say more what you'd call goodwill because goes to a charity. However you do find independent secondhand stores, which then be like a thrift shop.

I live in the UK but stopped going into game stores over the last several years and buy either direct from Nintendo online or Amazon so I've lost all my knowledge of the second hand market..it'd be useful.
Sidenote, Keith Chegwin hosted numerous primetime family shows over the 90s..
That said I'm still baffled that game exists..

I used to manage a CEX store quite some years back now and believe me, the poor reputation comes mostly from bad practices & ownership from the franchisee stores (of which there is more than corporate stores). Most of the corporate run stores are generally fine! A lot of people scoff at the high prices for hard to get items such as PS5's and new iPhones, but they pay just as much to purchase those products from the public in the first place just to be able to advertise the fact they have the latest and greatest products available and generally make less net profit on those than they would on items more widely available (you could sell the Steam Deck to CeX for more than the RRP cost, in cash!), but it drives foot traffic.
You can also find some crazy steals. I bought a set of Moment Camera Lenses for roughly £30 each, whilst the RRP costs generally sit between $100-200. Some collector Blu-Rays, Steelbooks and Boxsets sell for way less than they do online, it's luck of the draw as to whether their online corporate teams are knowledgable enough about more unique products or aware of industry changes that affect prices.

CEX has a bad rep here because your experience can vary wildly with what you purchase; it's not uncommon to get games that are missing inserts/manuals or mismatched platinum discs in black label cases. For example, I bought SMT Digital Devil Saga 1+2 and realized later on that 2 was the collector's edition but missing the additional inserts.
Best deal I got from there was God Hand (no manual) for £33 before the price shot up, but the case was filthy

I live in Europe. Denmark in fact, like Felix. And last I bought a game on a trip I think was Enslaved Collector's Edition on Xbox. I rarely by games if visit say France, Spain or Germany, unless it is a title I have really been looking for for ages, because I'm a purist and these countries translate the backside of the box to their own language instead of English (and sometimes the game itself is not even in English), and I can't have that in my collection of English games. Besides, if I REALLY want something... most times I can get it off eBay.
