Another great video. I appreciate the fact that your videos are not only informative about the products you carry, but also about the techniques one can employ while using them. THIS is how to market products - no "hard sell", just demonstrating their usefulness. Thank you.
Videos I watched before on your channel used to sound like more of a sales pitch no matter how bad the product is, but this video was very educational! Make more like this.
Very instructive video. It's the best I have seen about this important subject for every dedicated photographer. So often however, these tools are neglected, leading to mediocre results in portrait photography. And it's not only for portrait that you need to soften your flashlight, but also for object and art photography. Opening the window is not always conducive to have a better effect, for when the sun is glaring inside your studio, you are not going to get good object photos.
Adorama and B&H are direct competitors, but both are reputable outfits with top-quality equipment, great prices, knowledgeable sales staff and fantastic educational videos. Their competition benefits EVERYONE.
Good video. I notice that the video is a few years old, but certainly in the era of digital cameras, but the Vivitar 285 is being used with a radio trigger. What are the current radio triggers which would allow the use of these older high-voltage flashes?
Excellent guide, and as mentioned Larry has that "Stay a while, and listen" voice! One question though, I've been looking at the Interfit EZ flo Kit as it's rather cheap, and doesn't require several flash units. Opinions from the pros? And will you be doing a video like this for continuous lighting setups?
Just a matter of semantics,,, Wouldn't this Apollo unit be considered a square umbrella rather than a softbox. Most softboxes I have experience with use the light directed "Toward": the subject and modified with an interior baffle and exterior diffuser rather than having the light bounced into the unit and reflected toward the subject. However, I can see how this might produce very nice soft light...
Here are a couple of starter kits that would be suitable for video use. This one is LED: B&H # BELED200K and this is Flourescent: B&H # WEHSLK Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS
I'm a bit confused. When a fixture supports 600 watts, is that 4 42 watt fluorescent bulbs that are equivalent to 150watts, or is that 4 150watt fluorescent bulbs? Thanks in advance :)
The right shape in a softbox would depend on how large you need the make the light source and what you're shooting. For example, someone shooting portraits would benefit from an octagonal softbox since you can get them quite large, up to 7 feet in most cases. A larger softbox would give you a softer light, granted that the light source has sufficient power. With regards to square or rectangular softboxes, they can also work for portraits, but are popular among those shooting products as it will help conform the light to the shape of the product.
There's no difference between lights you might use to shoot film and to shoot digital - all concepts are transferable, except ISO is "fixed" when you use film!
Interfit EZ-flo is for Fluorescent lights so I am not sure if you are looking for a similar set up for a flash. The Impact Quikbox is a great way to expand the capabilities of your on-camera, shoe-mount flash. The Quikbox lives up to its name by popping open and assembling in a couple of minutes. The PocketWizard Plus IVe 2-Transceiver Kit, B&H # WIPIVEK would be a suitable radio trigger to use with the Vivitar 285HV.

great insight to softboxes. can you do one about soft boxes for film lights?

"And there you have it... dinosaur DNA!"
Is there any difference in the shape of the box? like square, rectangle, Octo...

Thank you very much for the reply. By film I meant video, not film as opposed to digital. I'm sorry for that, it was lost in translation!
Thanks
