I have searched the Internet for ages trying to find a tutorial on the canon speed light. I have had it for years and never really sat down and used it, as I was happier with no flash! Now I have watched this I feel very comfortable in the flash gun! Thank you for this video!
Gosh this was helpful! I have found myself in a situation where I need to use a speedlite tomorrow (I almost exclusively shoot video, meaning continuous lighting) for a photoshoot and I am starting from zero. I purchased my first today, had a quick play around with it to try and understand the absolute basics, and have then watched a few videos to try and expand my knowledge and capabilities. This video is exactly what I was looking for! Such great information presented at a reasonable pace that doesn’t drag and doesn’t rush, which enough attention to definitions to make sure your audience is with you every step of the way. Just did my first night-time event photoshoot with 2 speedlights and an RF controller I had bought that same day. It was scary, because I'd hardly ever used flash before, but I got my lighting all figured out (added gels, synced lights, set brightness, fixed umbrellas) behind the venue before I started and the photos turned out SO GOOD.
Your story inspires me. Your photos turned out SO GOOD because you took a lot of time figuring out how to do your shoot to get what you wanted from it. Congratulations by the way! And that is the secret sauce that I hope that you'll continue to use so that the rest of your images turn out to be SO GOOD...planning. Before long, lighting, technique and your skills will improve and you'll be tempted to go light on the plan. Take the advice of an old man with over 60 years behind the camera...keep planning. Use maps, travel guides and the Photographers Ephemeris when you travel, plan with your model when you do environmental portraits, consult with the city planning department when doing city scapes and when you can, walk every scene before you pull your camera out of the bag. Your enthusiasm caught me off guard. I hope it lasts as long as mine.
Just what I needed! . I've recently bought a Fujifilm camera and a Godox V350 Speedlight. The manual that comes with it doesn't explain the basics, and all the videos I could find on that flash didn't give the explanations I needed. Thank you Mark for this very informative video!

I've been looking all over for someone to actually talk about the speed lights. I just got a Godox TTL 685, and have been slightly overwhelmed. Thanks so much for a beginner, basic introduction. I'll look for your next flash course.
And it was completely wrong. It doesn't make things "clearer", it only determines when the flash fires, which you may want before or after the ambient light exposure. It's purely for artistic differences. He never even explained what the "curtain" is. It's the fact that there is a front and back edge of two curtains that run across the exposure box. The flash usually fires when the first opening curtain opens completely. The second curtain flash happens just before the second curtain begins to close across the box.
Just came across this video. It is just what I was looking for. Been an enthusiast photographer for 3-4 years now and didn't understand the zoom and 2nd curtain sync features until I watched this video. Awesome job in explaining. Thanks.

Lighting is the most complex part of photography. Its far from "everything" you need to know. But it is a good introduction to flash basics. Just as the title states.

Lighting is the most complex part of photography. Its far from "everything" you need to know. But it is a good introduction to flash basics. Just as the title states.

I agree. Im in australia and it really annoys me when you people say that. By the way, we really don't say " Gday mate" Thats for Croccodile Dundee " people. We also dont throw shrimps on the barbie either. Matter of fact we dont have shrimp here. They are prawns and they dont suit a barbie at all.
It's almost a necessity as well a 2 minute declaration of love for the sponsor.

Shrimp is singular and plural. No such word as "shrimps". It's like "sheep". Singular and plural. Also, "Australia" is spelled with a capital "A". Even we "Yanks" in Texas know that much.
A junior high school education would teach you the basics of English grammar. Yes, we speak English in Texas.
Or saying 'You guys' in every sentence!
