This video is so helpful! I have my first studio shoot today and I’ll be using a soft box. I was worried until I watched this and took notes. Thankyou!!!!!
What a great content, once again ! Always efficient teaching skills, this is why we like it and why it makes such a difference. I love how you (English speaking people) turned "finesse" into a verb, when it is absolutely not originaly... so funny.
The best and fullest concise and highly pedagogic explanation I have ever seen about most important feathering lignt concept and technique in photography. I now at last feel much more at ease, enough to start experimenting in a so much wider range of possibilities.
WTH! years trying to learn this concept.. and this video answered every question i ever had in less than 10 min. i feel like pulling out all my "toys" and start practicing this concept Thanks a lot guys!!
This is one of your best videos. You have given us so much food for thought. I have not seen anyone advocate or demonstrate so clearly this approach to feathering light. Bravo!
Thanks. I was not sure that i would learn anything from this video, before i watched it. When i had feathered, i had always just feathered side to side, i had not thought of feathering up!
Can't wait to start applying this variation of feathering. I've learned a lot thru your videos. thank you JP for the work you put on this. Much appreciated.
Holy crap! This is like the gospel! I've moved my softbox around, trying to eliminate a hot spot, or emulate the soft look of a scrim, but this demonstration shows the number of looks you can achieve with this technique! I'm trying this the next time i shoot. Thanks!
Very grateful, Thank you. In a totally practical way; you both demonstrated feathering and how white reflectors can be swivelled to achieve different results. again big thanks :)
An incredible piece of advice, it really makes a difference to turn the softbox that way, thank you so much and keep the good work. Greetings from Bolivia
AWESOME! I actually stumbled on to some of these affects in my last home based studio shoot. Thank you, now I have the correct term and more instruction o explain what I accidentally fell into.
I am using softboxes for some short video project (it was easier on the budget at this stage) and you are giving me some great tips. Thank you! I never knew the area of coverage was the same or about feathering. This opens up a lot pf possibilities!
Up and away.....Thanks J.P very informative. I shoot mostly with strobes - so no modelling light but I am usually tethered so I can bang away till I get the result.
Hi, this is an eye opening video. First time I see this, and really like it. As usual, you brought it across very simple and easy to understand also for a beginner. Thank you very much. Have a great weekend.
Awesome video tutorial. I've been using flash for years, have always heard about feathering, but never saw it explained so well. I can hardly wait to start using this technique. Thank you so very much!
Well, you've got a new fan. Love your succinct explanation, terrific information. I've often feathered light, but only from a horizontal plane. You mean I can actually move the light vertically too?! :-) Brilliant! Can't wait to see your other videos.
Excellent information on how to use a softbox. Another point is that a modeling light is almost a necessity, so trying to use speed lights makes it difficult to adjust your softbox properly.
Helpful tips on feathering the light to only light what you want illuminated. But just be careful to avoid saying feathered light is "softer". It's contrast can be lower if there are objects nearby to reflect main light into the shadows, and therefore it can be misinterpreted as softer light. But a feathered light appears smaller to the subject, so it's light is actually a tiny bit harder, not softer. Otherwise, a fun video!
Fantastic video! I mainly do concert photography/videography. A lot of my portraits are done backstage/onstage with available stage lights. I'm looking to expand more into controlled lighting situations, I'm really impressed with the concise lesson on using softboxes outdoors. I'll purchase a couple of them and take the world by storm! Than k you very much on posting this tutorial. I'll certainly use the tips explained here. Good day and GOD bless!
great yet simple techniques. learnt a very important lesson. thanks for posting. have been trying to control lighting inside my really tight 10 x 10 office, to shoot myself for my youtube videos, for the past couple of weeks & not getting the desired results, yet. Hope I can use this technique.
I liked this video. Using the continuous light source and inset close-up to see what was going on real-time was really helpful. I do have a suggestion..you should make your popup overlay things links. example: the softbox 101 that was mentioned. No link. You could also put the links in the description.
I miss your tutorials. It's always interesting to see how others work.
Loved this video. I have been feathering the light a lot lately and I gained so much control of my lighting to get more attention to my subject.
This video is so helpful! I have my first studio shoot today and I’ll be using a soft box. I was worried until I watched this and took notes. Thankyou!!!!!

Tim Sheets That was the idea with the pop ups, but I must have forgotten to add the links in after uploading. Doing it now. Thanks for the reminder.
