For creases and wrinkles, use a large softbox, or if you have only a small softbox, bring it closer to the face. Then add a white reflector to the opposite side (or another softbox instead of the reflector). Harsh lighting is okay for faces with perfect skin, and soft lighting for imperfect skin. .
What really differentiates this from the other videos is that you used a continuous light-source instead of a strobe, and you focused just on the lighting rather than taking each photograph. That makes it easy for us to visualize how the lighting changes as you move the reflector around, and see the changes in real-time. Very well-done!

I love this video because this is the first time I felt like a student (enjoying) watching a teach, since middle school, 15 yes ago! The model is gorgeous she looks like Victoria Beckham!
Sir, You're amazing, thank you. Just what i needed, instead of other people trying to turn it into a montage, you made it educational. Definitely subscribing!
I have to say, I really appreciate this video. There’s so many videos on UA-cam, on all different aspects of photography and they can often be muddled and overwhelming. This was clear and informative and simple. I learnt a lot. Cheers 👍
Great video - well scripted - the model is highly professional as well as attractive - she just sits there patiently as the center of attention without distracting from the lecture and training bits - a well crafted tutorial with good technique explained and demonstrated. Thanks. JT
Your the only one on youtube who gets this right especially when it comes to short and broad lighting, all others light the shadow side and call the pattern short light with the same light, thanks
I learn so much from watching your videos, I've been looking for solutions in forums for the last few months, but your videos help me a lot more. I owe you my subscription! Thanks
I liked your style, not heavy on the editing it really made you more real and relatable. Some might say you were too dark but since the focus isn't on you it makes sense. Easy and clear explanations. I took notes thank you!
I love photography. I took a class in college and I learned more in this video than I did there. Thank you. I subscribed and will go through all of your videos.
Great lesson on basic portrait lighting. All too often people try to explain basic lighting by using more lights than a rock concert and confusing and scaring the newbie. Get the single light poses down and see how to change from one to the other and you have a solid base upon which you can build up the complexity.
light is a difficult concept for me to grasp. and ive had these techniques explained to me before but watching this is the first time i really understand. amazing video. you are like the bob ross of grip. very comprehensive and you make anyone feel like they can do it after watching this. thank you very much
Notice what he is using here? Dollar per dollar any fool can learn this in 20 minutes.Give this guy a $20 LED ring light and Canon T1i the result would be he would not be able to even take 1 single shot. These "Pro's" rely too much on their full frame $5000 cameras and $2000 strobes, not enough using their brains. Any of this information can be learned in a matter of hours, but good luck getting the equipment required to actually use this information properly. All these techniques were made and designed around an expensive setup, never really meant consumer equipment.
JP, hands down, this is the best video summarizing lighting and techniques!!! Your ability to explain as well as visually deliver these lighting concepts with great ease makes this enjoyable and most importantly easy to understand. FINALLY, I GET IT. THANK YOU!!!
Great video!! Each step explained and demonstrated in a lively and engaging manner! I'm starting out in Portrait Photography and your tutorial was recommended by Ann Aveyard, Master Craftsman in photography of The Guild of Photographers (UK) Seeing each set up demonstrated in the harsh light, with the photobox removed, was so effective! Very professional model, with the human touch!! Have subscribed.

Watching this video with a Rembrandt: a life in 180 paintings in my hand. Always want to learn the lighting & composition side of knowledge from great classic paintings & their creators. So thrilled when Rembrandt pop up on your video. Maybe a new series video idea: what could learn of lighting & composition from great classic paintings.
You're a cool dude JP, thanks for this. You might want to cover controlling the light in these different setups. Gridding, flagging, spills etc. Every setup has it's own challenges regarding to light positions, studio space and the types of background (luma and hue). Back in the time when I was starting with photography, this stuff gave me headaches. A complete tut on this topic could be pretty useful to the community. Cheers
i’m sure I will repeat a lot of what was commented on but here goes…. Very very well done video. You captured the different lighting styles with a simple steady light and by either moving the reflector or your subjects face/body, you clearly demonstrated the differences you can get in lighting scenarios. By far this has been the clearest (no pun intended) video on the different lighting styles in photography/portraiture.
Rembrant's favourite light was a skylight and he positioned his sitters underneath. Surprised you didn't mention Vermeer whose studio had a large north facing window.
Agree with MANY comments...this is, hands down, the most (fluidly) precise, informative, and easily digestible portrait lighting tutorial--and you keep things hopping. Viewers site various reasons why this presentation is spot-on, but what I witness is someone who actually knows LIGHTING (the physics of LIGHT; lighting terminology) either from experience, perhaps a formal education in photography, or both? My guess is both. Regardless, it's obvious you know what you're talking about and hence, can explain these patterns in an engaging and simple tutorial. Appreciate!
Well done. I don't use lighting out of ignorance. But this video really got me rethinking. Learned a bunch. Excellent ideas, but more than that, excellent teaching style. Many thanks.
I don't know who are those jerks who put dislike to this video - this one is one of the best tutorials on portrait lighting, very clear, straightforward and extremely understandable. Thanks!!!

I know these set ups. But on one website, they were explaining about broad and short lighting. Now short lighting is where the shadow is on the side of the face closest to the camera lens. It can be Loop or Rembrant and is used to make the face look smaller. Broad lighting is just the opeside. The shadow is placed on the side of the face farther from the camera lens, and is used to make the face look larger.
It is a very useful video. I googled a lot and even went through a lot of UA-cam video but this one was really useful. Got the whole concept 👌 thank you.
Dude! Thank you sooo much! I have a skylight behind my desktop and we are having zoom meetings for work. The skylight is 4x8' and the monitors are attached to the wall... so none of that is movable and I look like smeone in the witness protection program. I have been trying to figure out how to position a small ring light to stop that and so my 60 year old neck doesn't turkey out, I am not blinded AND can actually see my computer screen... Butterfly light!!! I watched your vid & placed it much more over my head & back toward me than I would ever have considered and it looks fabulous. It looks fab no matter where I look or how I turn; no matter if I am looking up or down, left or right. Bless you! I work with 20 & 30 somethings in a VC firm and I am trying not to remind them I could be their mother or grandmother! LOL You totally did this and I thank you!!!!
Very helpful. Thank you! Might you have a tutorial on lighting darker skin tones? Trying to understand if there is much change in lighting for brown/black skin tones.

Thank you so much for this. How would these 5 vary with an older subject. Where you have to account for skin creases and wrinkles. Thank you.
What lighting setup (product names) were you using on this shoot?
For creases and wrinkles, use a large softbox, or if you have only a small softbox, bring it closer to the face. Then add a white reflector to the opposite side (or another softbox instead of the reflector). Harsh lighting is okay for faces with perfect skin, and soft lighting for imperfect skin. .

hey jacqueline, thanks for checking out our channel. we had a lot of fun on this one.
Great video - explained in ten minutes what others have been unable to do in 10 hours!
Glad that you found it worthwhile!
That was the best lighting tutorial ever!❤❤❤ thanks a lot for making the knowledge so fun and great. You have such a vibe that makes me try even though Im scared of the results. That was like a masterclass! I will be watching all your content. Regards from Norway 😍😍😍
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you found it so valuable!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you for the simple explanation and most helpful for a newbie.. You are a great teacher.
You're very welcome! I appreciate your feedback!
The loop light with fill card was my favorite with her wow
Glad you liked it and hope your learned some good stuff!

That's great to hear, Stephen. Thanks for checking out our video! Take a look at our other laws of light videos: bit.ly/2HeQkfC
So happy it was so helpful. And there are a lot of great things about age and wisdom! Glad you were able to make yourself look great!
Excellent video on lighting. I liked the Rembrandt look.
I agree. It is a nice way to light.
This was so Amazing class and you explain it so easy and understandable thank you so much .
Very helpful. Thank you! Might you have a tutorial on lighting darker skin tones? Trying to understand if there is much change in lighting for brown/black skin tones.
These 5 lighting positions are universal to the human face.
Thank you so much! This helped with my photography class so much. I just didn’t understand it in my textbook. I love how real you are in your videos, too! Thanks!
Glad it helped! Good luck with your class!
