I have the exact same Princeton with the Celestion Ten 30. I’m thinking of swapping it out for something different. Your tutorial is going to save me from any potential headaches. Thank you!
Watched the video and just swapped out the speaker in my 68 Custom Princeton. Went from the stock 10” Celestion Ten 30 to an Eminence GASC64-10. The improvement was crazy. Cleaned up all the mud in the low end. Almost thought I developed a little rattle but it was just a couple screws that needed an tad more tightening. Next rehearsal and a few good hours of leaning into this thing will really give me baseline. Thanks much!
@@craiglizt8074 yep. That’s the one. It took all that wired fizziness off of the top end as well. 2 long gigs and a few rehearsals in I’m finding I take more drive pedals off my board and am downsizing the pedalboard too. The amp and speaker combo is just a winner.
@@thenwyeti7270 right on man! The 10" Celestion Greenback is a winner in that same amp too. I own that same amp and swap between both speakers. It's just so good!
@@craiglizt8074 I’m trying to decide between these two right now. Can I ask - do you prefer one over the other and why? If you could provide any more detail I would love to hear about it. There are not many videos on the 68 CPR with different speakers in it so I’m going by what I read…thanks!
@@BaronVonNebula hi. If I had to choose one it'd be the Eminence. It is really good at everything I throw at it while still being able to sound more vintage as opposed to the 10" Greenback. Plus it is the superior speaker for cleans. The Greenback has more of an upfront breakup, which some may like. Neither are good for heavy metal, which isn't a surprise given the amp in question. Else, they'll both do hard rock, blues, and even some passable 80s metal (again, not bass-laden heavy metal.) The only advantages the Greenback has is it appears to be a tad better while playing very, very loud. Else, the Eminence is the better overall transducer. I hope this helps!
I can't believe that it came stock with that. Mine came with a Jensen Alnico. Celestion 10/30 is sort of cheaping out Fender. BTW...love the YJM @ 10:27.
You will Never get the Pristine Fender glassy-Clean-chime - without a Jensen. I love my 65 Blackface reissue. The sound is phenomenal. (also) remember: when increasing volume, reduce the bass on these amps. Nice Demo & Explanation. oNe LovE from NYC
I have the new 68 Vibro Champ Reverb and I had a buzzing with my stock Ten 30 as well. Like bass making it rattle type buzzing. I replaced the speaker and haven't heard it since.
Probably not the best for doing a video, but when I do a speaker swap like this I lay the amp face down. Then you are not struggling with trying to hold the speaker while lining up screws. Gravity holds it for you.
Hello! I'm using the same amplifier as you. It's a soft, sweet sound, but bass is a little annoying and sometimes stuffy. Can i solve booming problem by upgrading the Greenback speaker? Actually, I ordered the same speaker on the Internet and I'm waiting now.
Has anyone made this speaker mod and noticed a difference? I love my princeton 68 custom but the mids are just a tad bit murky, wonder if it's that ten 30?
Can you shed any light on how to change the speaker on a Fender Princeton 65 solid state amp with a 12" speaker? There isn't a removable 4 screw panel on the back bottom. Thanks
Is it this simple if putting in a 12” speaker? Or do i have to do something more when putting in 12” speaker. All this is totally new to me so thanks for the instructional and helpfull piece of content!
If you’re changing from a 10” to a 12” you will likely need to resize the hole in your cabinet for the speaker. That would be a much more involved process, but the electronics portion of this would be the same.
Gabriel, would it be better to use all 8 mounting holes and no adhesive? Some of the buzzing could be from the speaker being mounted with glue & 4 screws instead of 8.
The 4 existing screws have ferrules installed into the cabinet wall, which one could modify to have 8, but it really is overkill honestly. The glue I find to be unnecessary most of the time anyway, but its there so that if the screws vibrate out over time, the speaker doesn't fall.
Does changing the speaker really do that much to change the sound of an amp? I always thought the electronics like the tubes and whether it was solid state or not made the most difference. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Curious do you ever sell guitar pots? Iv been trying to get 500k pots but want something rated around 570-580. Idk if people out there actually sell pots with the true rating like that . I hope my only option isn’t buying a ton and seeing if I get lucky
We do sell them, and pots with those ratings do exist, but they are a special order. I would advise looking for electronics supply stores, or we could order them for you.
I have this exact amplifier with the exact speaker. I think it sounds fantastic...a big improvement to the stock speaker in my opinion. The Greenback is more well-rounded in my opinion and allows the amp to cover surf, vintage blues, to hard rock with the appropriate drive pedals. The stock speaker had a tendency to be too bass-heavy and lacked chime. If you're after a more vintage tone, I'd recommend the Eminence GA10-SC64. I swap between these two speakers from time to time. They do not disappoint! Either way you go, they are relatively inexpensive upgrades. Best of luck on the tone hunting!

Thanks so much for this. I am going to switch speakers in my Princeton and this was super helpful!
A very clear and instructive video, Gabriel. The Princeton, together with the new speaker, has a very clean and pure sound. Take care, Colin.

Very nice. We just swapped out the stock Jensen for a VT Jr. And are getting more chime which we need for surf.

Great video. Are the speaker connections not soldered on? They seem to be on my 65 PRRI

I can tell you that this mod made a world of difference in the tonal quality of this amp.
I replaced mine with a Warehouse G10c and it’s made a world of difference. It feels noticeably louder and the bass is definitely tighter.
I put an alinco gold 40watt in my princeton RI and it rocks.
What about a thin foam “gasket” around, between the speaker frame and the front baffle? Mine has a microphonic “buzz” as well.
I always remove the tubes before I change the speaker in a combo.

Yes, I would say it can make a significant difference!
definitely can make a big difference, I put an alinco gold in mine and was able to a/b it with another stock princeton. No doubt made a big change.

Put a Celestion in mine but it's still a little ice picky.
