Another fun point, the second input on a Princeton has a -6dB cut on it. So if you plug into that channel, you can push the circuitry a bit harder to get a higher sustain w/o the higher volume.
you are hearing tolerance in the pots (knobs) they can be off as much as +/-20% so dial them in to sound 'close' then you'll hear the actual differences.

The fact that one's in the corner means you're getting a different response from sound reflections cancelling; it would also change based on how far away from the wall they are. With my production hat on I would say that when recorded that the black would be amazing for leads and statement guitars, as it really cuts through - whereas the blonde would be great for rhythm as it has such a great and exciting fizz about it, and a nice balanced tone. BTW thanks for taking the time out to make such great content, I have no doubt that you inspire guitarists and musicians both young and old.

Now I own a Fender Princeton Reverb Blackface RI and I am loving it.
the new US Princess model on the Helix has become my go-to amp sim on my HX Stomp, but holy moly, nothing compares to hearing those two in stereo, beautiful stuff
It’s interesting how many different variations of the Princeton Limited Editions there are. Some even have 12” speakers instead of 10”. I have a burgundy red one with a 12” Jensen, and they also made a blue one a couple years ago with a 12” Celestion Alnico Blue.
Differences in tone could be due to the position of the amps - the Black one is located in a corner where two walls meet, and the other is against a flat wall. Advice regarding Monitor placement talks about proximity to walls, corners and flat walls reflect sound differently. Perhaps that is contributing to the difference in tones of the Amps. You could try switching the positions and see if there is a significant difference. Thanks
Main difference you are hearing is between the alnico and ceramic speakers (very different flavours - both nice in their own way). Alnico generally considered a bit more smooth and compressed, ceramic tighter and punchier.
Somehow, I'm just catching this video. Good one. I've got that same '65 Blonde Ltd. Ed. Great pedal platform amp! Sometimes I'll also run it in stereo w/ my AC15. A heavenly, sparkly combo to say the least. FWIW, honestly, the difference you are hearing in speakers, I think, is possibly your placement of the one in the corner there. ??? Edit: Yeah, I'm a little late to the party with that suggestion, I just noticed.
Different speakers change tone a lot. This can usually be matched with mic placement and mic distance. Standard Princeton , with standard speaker features on a lot of great recordings., upgrading is for those with more dollars than cents (sense)
I have two Pignose G40vs for my stereo set-up. I thought I was crazy for making it happen. But now after realizing you did it too. I'm certain it's crazy.. 😎
I just picked up one today for $225cad from a pawn shop. It needed a good cleaning, but came out nicely. The grill mesh is a bit beat up from having shit all over it in the pawn shop, but if I can find new mesh I'll replace it. Sounds fantastic, and has the footswitch too.

@@JarredJ that's awesome! The deals are out there. It doesn't hurt that they made solid state version that look nearly identical. I'm sure that's what the shop thought they had.
Your video just blew out my preconception of what I'd expect an Alnico vs Ceramic speaker to sound like. In my mind the P10R should sound better than the C10R. The black amp with the C10R seams to capture all the low wattage black face goodness. One other point to bring up would be how well the speakers are broke in compared to each other. I'd also check the Bias of the 6V6's to make sure they're biased the same. Great demonstration.
Might be in this case, because when I replaced the celestion ceramic speaker in my Mesa Electradyne with a Alnico Jensen it wounded amazingly better with the the Jensen alnico blackbird.
I just got the 65 reissue reverb amp with the burgundy tolex... I have it paired with a fender bass breaker 14 watt in stereo. It’s very awesome. Will take getting used to but damn good clarity. Almost too much LOL
My PRRI had the Jensen Alnico and it sounded so bad I thought the amp was broken. I could put the treble on 1 and roll the tone back on my tele more then half way and it was still harsh and brittle. I played it at volume for several live gigs hoping the speaker would break in. It still sounded horrible to me. I decided to try a Weber that everyone recommended before selling the amp...man that speaker is beautiful. Now I play my Princeton more than any other amp I own. I’ve played it at small clubs and big venues ( w adequate PA) and it’s always the perfect amp choice. I usually run it between 7/8 on volume and ride the volume knob on my guitar. But that Alnico speaker in mine...just horrible. Thin fizzy super scooped broke up in a very unpleasant way at lower volumes....
Hi , thanks for doing this. You are having way to much fun. I recently purchased a second Princeton Reverb ( Sweetwater Model) which came wirh an Eminence Canibis 12. I actually got it because it has an awesome tweed covering. Anyway, I replaced the Eminence witha Jensen C12Q. Easier for the amp to push, plus the Jensen weighs 2 pounds less. Anyway, I have a trio and we do vintage Cream, Stones & etc. I was thinking the 12 would add a bit more mid to our sound, and maybe it does, but on leads where I need to cut thru, it just doesn't have the crisp sustain that the Jensen C10Q has. I've gigged about 30 hours on it & the speaker should be broken in, but if I play those 2 amps side by side up against the band its obvious that I need more volume w/ the 12" to get the sound I want. I had that happen with 2 other amps in the past too. I used a Blues Jr. ( 12") against a Fender Pro Junior ( 10") and the pro could cut through anything, where the junior kind of got lost a bit. I'm going to baffle the tweed Princeton and go back to the 10.
Thank you for your observation about the 10 inch versus a 12 inch… I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a 12 inch Princeton to complement my custom 64 hand wired 10 inch Princeton. I love the way the 10 inch speaker sounds, so naturally one might be inclined to think that if 10 inch sounds good than 12 inch Has to sound even better. I think your experimentation has dispelled this myth… Has your position changed since you originally posted this? Thanks
No .I have pretty much cleared out all my 12" stuff. I guess 12s are OK if you're really loud, but I think those days are past. I guess a 12 might be OK for guys who do the real clean Tele stuff (Ventures & etc) but that not my forte.
@@markomaticd4106 Thanks for solidifying… Yeah couldn’t agree more. I’m in the same boat you are I think. 10 inch is plenty for my needs at this stage in my life… The 64 hand wired with the Jensen speaker sounds magical every time I pick up my guitar. Gonna leave well enough alone

I have a Morgan PR12 and a Princeton ‘68. Looking for a switcher for Amp A, Amp B and both amps in stereo. Can you help me out? Don’t nog which switcher i need. Greetings from Holland!
I'd imagine 95% of the tonal difference is the speaker, but there's also at LEAST a 5% tolerance allowance in each of the pots, caps, resistors, etc. Eight on one amp will NEVER be EXACTLY like eight on another amp (at least not analog amps, anyway) even with the same speaker/cab. A more fair comparison to find the tonal differences might've been to take your OG Princeton at your favorite settings and try to dial the new one in as closely as possible to it without looking at the numbers. Regardless, AFAIK, in a stereo setup you want the amps to sound different to kind of fill each other in. Otherwise you just add volume rather than complementary "3D" tones.
It's possible that the black amp - being in the corner of the room could have a darker sound that the blond (not being in a three wall corner. This effect could be minimized in the recording because of the close miced recording. Maybe.
I'm looking at the Sweetwater exclusive Fender '65 Princeton Reverb 1x12" 15-watt, Lacquered Tweed model. It has the 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker. Now I'm wondering what Reverb tank it has. I like it drippy! If you do another test with two amps together, it would be interesting to put one on a slight delay.

Whoa. I had the song in mind by the partial title.. Also.. Whoa. I have amps I can't lift one handed. My 212 combo I've never been able to dime it. It's painful at half gain half level channel 3. 120w RMS. IDKY my Peavey Bandit 112 is so heavy it's a practice amp in comparison Run the louder one with a bit more reverb on the amp just enough to blur the image. It will wrap around the quieter one. It's how I manage my imbalance
Ryan you're having way too much fun so now I'm going to start having way too much fun I'm going to start with the big surfy bear then get the Jazzmaster because of the upgraded tremolo is fantastic I have a Tweed 65 circuit black face with a 12-inch cannabis Rex Princeton reverb let the fun begin
Great video!! You should defenitely do the 12" mod on the blode Princeton and explore different extension cabs with 12 " speakers for the Princeton. A video where you play different guitars through the same settings would be interesting! Strat, les paul, something p-90 through a Princeton and see how big difference the output of the guitar makes:)
I really dig where your heart and ears are at but a tele, start, lp combo would tell most players where their preference is and that would please most players.
@@60CycleHumcast Oh no!!! Hahaha!! I jump around on your videos so not surprised I missed that. I liked the color and the shape of it. I'm mainly a Tele guy but this year since the world is upside down I bought a Stratocaster and a Samick Strat (Malibu) which I modified. I think I hit upon a great combination of F/S/S in the form of a Filtertron/SD Little 59/SD Quarter Pounder. I simplified the controls so it's a Master Volume, coil split (Little 59) and Master Tone with the Greasebucket mod. It also has a standard 5 way switch. Truth be told that configuration works out very well, they play very nicely with each other. Its a very aggressive sounding guitar because the pots are 250s. I also put in a brass block on the trem (GFS would recommend) and made a huge difference before I moded the pickups. I bought that guitar for $75 out the door from a record shop in January. The other Strat is a Squire neck (Korean one piece maple) and an unknown body. I put in all Seymour Duncan pickups (Twang Banger/Reverse Alnico ll/Two-Five neck) and that came out very Stratish even though I thought it would be different. Anyways this year was for oddballs and I definitely liked that Pure Salem guitar, definitely odd and very cool.
The alnico P10r is about $120 give or take...the c10r is about half that. You could easily sell the p10r, get a c10r to get both amps sounding similar, and have extra $$ left over for more gear!
I am going to go out on a limb and call it like I see it....... It's that old Legendarily-Blistering, Goin'-Down-in-Flames... "BLONDE" thing. Ya know? Remember that song? "The Blonde Can't Help It" No? 😉
just got a princeton myself. 65 prr. does yours also makes noise after 5? very happy with the ampbut was not expecting noise. Its my first valve amp howver so i dont even know if thats normal.
It does. I put in new to me Eminence speakers in my beat to shit Yamaha G100-ll and it really warms the amp up from the cheapo Johnsons. The amp was in a flood and the speakers were replaced with a cheap set of 12 inchers. The amp was a cheap buy years ago and sounded fine. Basically it was Yamaha's take on a Fender Twin except solid state. It had a warmth to it before but now it is getting close to tube warmth. Nice round mids and lows without being too boomy. Might as well be a different amp. I wouldn't mind getting one in original condition with the original speakers to hear a difference.
@@gringogreen4719 Cool. I put a Jensen Mod speaker in 2 practice amps, with using the same ohm of course, and they are excellent sounding! Pretty sure they are ceramic magnets. They were lifeless before and really jumped to life after the speakers broke in ✌

I’ve always wanted to mix the two 10” in the Valco.
Whoa. I had the song in mind by the partial title..
Also.. Whoa. I have amps I can't lift one handed. My 212 combo I've never been able to dime it. It's painful at half gain half level channel 3. 120w RMS. IDKY my Peavey Bandit 112 is so heavy it's a practice amp in comparison
Run the louder one with a bit more reverb on the amp just enough to blur the image. It will wrap around the quieter one. It's how I manage my imbalance
Hey! Great vids! What microphones are you using here? Looks like cascade fathead ribbons?
Yep
Ryan you're having way too much fun so now I'm going to start having way too much fun I'm going to start with the big surfy bear then get the Jazzmaster because of the upgraded tremolo is fantastic I have a Tweed 65 circuit black face with a 12-inch cannabis Rex Princeton reverb let the fun begin
They both sound good just different. Maybe video idea of comparing them with same speaker
In theory they should be the same circuit and the speaker & reverb pan should be the only real difference.
@@60CycleHumcast I was afraid f that, d'oh!
Those Jensen speakers sound awful with OD but have the best cleans. I had to get a 12" Princeton FSR to get the best of both worlds
That stereo was awesome
10 months later... which one is your favorite?
he sold both and plays a Bogner
Great video!! You should defenitely do the 12" mod on the blode Princeton and explore different extension cabs with 12 " speakers for the Princeton. A video where you play different guitars through the same settings would be interesting! Strat, les paul, something p-90 through a Princeton and see how big difference the output of the guitar makes:)
I really dig where your heart and ears are at but a tele, start, lp combo would tell most players where their preference is and that would please most players.
I definitely needed to say 'most' and 'players' more.
Ryan! Nice video! I think you need to get a third Princton so you can make the Tri Force Sound!!!😳😄😄😄
Curious what you traded for the new Princeton.
Pedals + cash
@@60CycleHumcast
Cool. Thought you traded the Pure Salem guitar. Thats a cool one!😎👍✨
@@gringogreen4719 I sold that awhile back
@@60CycleHumcast
Oh no!!!
Blonde sounds a little mellower.
The alnico P10r is about $120 give or take...the c10r is about half that. You could easily sell the p10r, get a c10r to get both amps sounding similar, and have extra $$ left over for more gear!
天才!
both at once is the sound. yeah, modeled vs those video for sure.
Are you truly running right and left or are you just running mono into each one?
Definitely sound better together.
They’re both great!!!
I am going to go out on a limb and call it like I see it.......
It's that old Legendarily-Blistering, Goin'-Down-in-Flames... "BLONDE" thing.
Ya know?
Remember that song?
"The Blonde Can't Help It"
No?
😉
Ryan, what are you using for a switcher?
The Black has more presence and oomph for lack of a better word
just got a princeton myself. 65 prr. does yours also makes noise after 5? very happy with the ampbut was not expecting noise. Its my first valve amp howver so i dont even know if thats normal.
past 5 you should start to get tube distortion and static like noises will be more noticeable .
Love that vid title. Have yourself a like.
Are they loud enough to gig tn a 50's 60's rock band?
Probably not without mics on them if you want clean tone.
@@60CycleHumcast ok, thanks
Ryan, what have I told you about the Fuzz!! Lay off the fuzz! Try them both with a tube screamer style pedal. :)
Same amp...one with a ceramic magnet speaker...one with an AlNiCo...nice contrast.
Stereo wet/dry setup...yummy!
I'm curious to know if swapping the speakers would change the tone of the amps any...
It definitely will. Now to get Ryan to swap them for an upcoming video comparison 😆
Pfft, Ryan's a big boy, he makes his own decisions. I'm just throwing out ideas without suggesting money be spent on things (like speakers).
They were lifeless before and really jumped to life after the speakers broke in ✌
@@davidkastin4240
Yup! Pretty sure my Jensens are not quite broken in yet but definitely better than the stock speaker right out the gate.
Yeah two! Pot tolerances and broken in speaker might account for the diff? *shrug*
Buy another C10 and P10 speaker then you can try matching the two either way.
Try them both through the same extension cab - do they sound the same?
Oh, you just said it. I tend to comment as I'm watching.:)
Stereo tube amps is love. Stereo tube amps is life.
Its not ogre...
One sounds like blonde tolex.
Surf Ryan is best Ryan
What are you using for your AB switch ?
EHX switchblade
The Fender reverb unit should be standing on the blonde Princeton!! :)
I love alnico speakers!
The speakers alone could account for any and all tonal discrepancies, IMO.
I think you now need, a 90's Princeton chorus stereo...And I know someone that has one..lol
You know two people now, because I have one of those units. It kicks ass.
The 10 inch speaker is more efficient
