      @@HouseImprovements Years ago, I wrote instructions for setting up and operating manufacturing equipment. One day, I got the idea to videotape the process and then created a comic book from the video. On some of these videos, I am tempted to make my own comic book so I will have these instructions actually out on my project.

    I've been doing construction full time for 18 yrs since I graduated when I was a junior. I wish I worked with this guy. I'm a master carpenter and multi skilled tradesman, every video I've seen by Shannon is spot on. You'll learn a lot the right way from this guy, he cuts no corners. Subtract 3/8" in the winter because it'll expand in the heat: subtract 1/4" in the summer because it'll shrink in the winter. 1/4" up and down for clearance is fine all year around, it moves mostly over the length of the piece, less over the height. Keep your nails to the top of the slots, leave your nails a nickel or a dime from the siding for movement, too much and the wind will push the vinyl into the nail and stamp the heads into the piece, visible through the face. Popping tabs up through the face are nicer than silicone if you ever have to pull a piece, also silicone only holds you at the bottom, not at the cut top of the piece at the accessory trim, whether at the sill below a window or the final row at the top, if you want you can also use undersill/accessory trim in the J-channel at the bottom if the bottom cut-off in an elevation difference if the cut-off will make the top row. Every manufacturer is different, some say 3/4" into the stud, some say 1 1/2" nails minimum, so with 1/2" sheathing they go into the stud 1." The. 2" if you're going over existing wood siding, add for thickness of any foam installed additionally over sheathing to length of nail. Also keep your nails up to the top of the slots

      +Altair Ibn-La Ahad Yes it is much cheaper to do it yourself if you can, but not all people can or have houses that are easy to do. In hiring any contractor you need to get at least 3 estimates from reliable contractors that have multiple references. It is also important to check on the contractor with your states builders board to see if he is licensed and if he has any claims against him/her.

    • @blake4701
      @blake4701 7 років тому +20

      Altair Ibn-La Ahad there are a lot more expenses to running a legitimate business than a simple wage. payroll taxes, equipment maintenance, licensing fees, WCB, Professional Associations, on going certifications regarding safety etc. Not to mention there can be warranty costs, and no pension/benefits of any kind for the contractor. Also, installing the siding is only half of it at best. proper installation of the envelope (homewrap, dripcaps, and flashing of all types). i have seen so many jobs with improper moisture management issues. there is a huge difference between do it yourself/handyman work and a professional job.

    I liked your video I didn’t see how you waterproofed the TYPAR vapor barrier/house-wrap to the weather-strip you sealed under the window? On the west coast if we don’t tape the house wrap to; the weather-strip that’s sealed under the window or to the window itself, the installation WILL LEAK. I like to install a plywood blade and my saw backwards which gives me a smooth cut and eliminates possible chipping

    I'm a brick mason by trade , and trying to get my place fixed up to be more easily maintained as I age. I have a simple 16' x 16' storage shed I am putting vinyl siding on and in my area, you can't hire the work out. For that reason, I really appreciate the how to videos on vinyl. You make it very easy and clear what and what not to do....Thanks!

    I completely agree with all other viewers comments. Being a BMW tech for 30+ years, I have a greater understanding and appreciation for "craftsman" work style, and just "throw up cheap untrained hacks"
    You may not realize it Shannon, as a lot of great tradesmen don;t, but your small attention to details speaks volumes as to their pride in your work. I wasn't able to fully grasp that concept until the last 5 years. Somewhere along the route, you become recognized and respected as that type of detailed, awesome results, and oddly enough, people start coming to you for help,questions. That aspect really sneaks up on you, until someone finally will comment on just how good your workmanship is. Basically, to summarize, you are among'st a very,very tiny % of the true craftsman. I live by the rule of no one ever being able to make any negative comment on my repairs,Thanks for the videos, all of them.
    Maybe I can return a favor 2 with advise you any car repairs you may have to get done

      Thanks Yuley1, I try to do the best job I can every time and on these videos but it seems there is always someone who has a complaint about what or how we have shown something on a video. I have learned to let that go, everyone has thier ways and in most cases there is more than one way to do every job. I do appreciate your positive comments though, thanks. My business partner has some auto websites and OBD code sites that could maybe use your expertise if you are interested. You can contact him if you like. www.house-improvements.com/forums/memberlist.php?mode=contactadmin

    Excellent teaching for me. I had asked a couple of siding companies for estimates on a small project at my house (adding siding onto a porch converted to a bathroom) and they said the job was too small for them to tackle. So, with no other options, I'm doing it myself and this video gives me great advice and instruction on how to do it. Thank you, man!

    Great video! I'm older, but since the materials are not heavy, I can tackle this job. At my rental property, the vinyl siding on entire west side of the house warped and buckled. I don't think it was from poor installation, but rather from a particular summer afternoon when the sun simply radiated too much heat on the west side of the house. Thank you for the great video.
